Two neighboring Norwegian villages are bitter rivals for generations, under hostile petty Viking chiefs styled 'kings'. In one, limping orphan Halfdan, adopted by the cripple blacksmith, has a hard time growing up, bullied by stronger, brutish knaves, his keen brain being disregard as unmanly. In the border woodland he meets and befriends Meia, 'princess' of the rival village and an indomitable tomcat rebuked as not ladylike, Hostility prevents the villages from prospering for lack of collaboration, while every problem is blindly blamed on the 'enemy'. The maverick kids conspire with the women to join the forces, but old feuds die hard as the pride 'rulers' and their men stubbornly vilify their opponents, yet Halfdan outsmarts them all.
