Watched the Pilot and Series 1 and thoroughly enjoyed both. Very amusing and watchable. Disappointed to find no Series 2 was made .

I think this is a really great comedy.

I'm going to score this a nine, that may seem high, but I think it's a score that's appropriate. On the debit side, it's a little slow to spring to life, and I don't just mean the three years from pilot to main series, but everything is a bit slow and clunky early on. As it develops though, it just gets better and better, and by the end, I am desperate for more.
The final two episodes are a total triumph, funny, moving, and had me hooked.
The acting is terrific, early on I'd say Rebecca Front steals, later on though it's Siobhan Finneran who impressed me the most. I think Marilyn was my fav character, was she supposed to be a chav? I thought she always looked amazing.
Lots of semi naked men throughout, which is quite funny, but it's not preachy, it's just good old fashioned comedy with a heart. It really does play on the class wars, you see the collision of two families, one from a poorer background, one middle class.
You will see Cathy's journey, pushed along by Cat, the pair begin to see something in one another.
Let's have series two please. 9/10.

Slow burner that end high!

The pilot for this show was promising but lacked something and I wont lie the first 3 episodes kinda don't do the whole show justice. By the end you will be in tears of laughter with the very British comedy.
The characters develop and grow throughout the series and by the last you really care about them. The lovechild character played by Lauren Socha is so lovable by the end. In fact you want to give her a big cuddle.
This show excels in being a female driven comedy, without telling you every 5 seconds. Not one spice girl-esq cliche is dropped. The show Is a hoot.
That being said it might not be for some. There is no great story arc and there is a subtle amount of real world drama. Things never explode into the fantastical. Instead it sticks unnervingly close to real life. To some that might seem boring. For me I warmed up to the show and now consider it one of the best the BBC has done, alongside Him & Her, Gavin & Stacy and Uncle.
I refuse to give any spoilers, but the main cast are what make this. If you give it a chance you will see how lovely this show is. I am not a fan of Holly Walsh's comedy or other work, but for me she has hit gold with this. Caroline Quentin as the mad aunt is perfection rarely seen in casting.
Thank you to all involved. I doubt this will get a second series as Lauren Socha is a figure of attack during 2020... I wonder how history will look at the current time and it's inability to forgive. She is a white wale for their Ahab. I really hope it does and people see what a good actress she actually is. She was one of the reason to watch Misfits. And she is the breakout star in this.

I don't usually write reviews for things like this but i loved this show so much i thought i had to. Lauren Socha is great at comedy i watched her in misfits and thought she was great then so had to watch this when i saw her name and she didn't let me down. It's witty daft comedy that makes you smile. The acting was great and i enjoyed the plot from start to finish. I have watched these around 6 times. It's my go to series if iv'e had a rubbish day. I also liked the soundtrack to the series. Give it a watch!
Great mix of comedy and drama

Uneven but Characterful

I was definitely attracted to this almost entirely by the stellar pairing of Ellie White and Rebecca Front - two of the greatest British comedy talents of their respective generations finally working together is glorious on its own. The Other One is a tale of infidelity, family, awkwardly internalising your feelings and crossing perceived class boundaries in a fairly strong British TV tradition.
It's a rather broad and not particularly consistent show as it both lacks the serious venom of something like Nighty Night but also the warm characterisation of something like King Gary - sitting somewhere awkwardly between the two. The characters are either too shallow or too bitter to be truly likable - but it was kept watchable by some solid casting, some surprising musical choices and two rather brilliantly misdirected series finale twists.

As a TV show this is very well written. Character growth/arks are handled very well.
Strong female leads and the premise of the TV show feels very realistic and relatable.
However having watched the entire series, the fact a convicted racist was cast does leave a bitter taste - therefore reduced rating to a 7.
But if you are the kind of person where racism does not bother you (what we refer to as a subtle racist) then you will enjoy this show a hell of a lot.
Either way give this a try :)Great show - just a shame about the convicted racist casted

Brilliant and deceiving

At first I wasn't sure I would enjoy this sitcom, but I was so wrong. I'm so disappointed to discover there's only one season and I can't find any info on a second season.
PLEASE continue. This show is not only brilliant and deceptive in that it takes one into various funny and very plausible situations, there are always positive and endearing messages left behind. It's cute, funny and refreshing. It reminds me of the show Mom. That show was quirky and down to earth too. Just fun!
WHERE'S SEASON 2,3,4?!
PLEASE!
Re-igniting comedic farce
bgsmall8 March 2023
I started watching this on iPlayer on the strength of having Lauren Socha and Siobhan Finneran as members of the primary cast.
The ruse is that Cathy Walcott's (Ellie White) father is being thrown a surprise birthday party. As the assembled party goers lie in wait, Mr Walcott enters the room only to suffer a massive heart attack which instantly kills him. Herein begins the story. It becomes apparent that Mr Walcott has a mistress (Siobhan Finneran) and moreover another daughter - Cat (Lauren Socha)
Very glad I watched this. Great comedic cast with aforementioned as well as Rebbeca Front as 'Colin's' wife. Holly Walsh's writing is bang on the money. Do hope series 3 will be commissioned!

Not one likable character

A few actors that I've enjoyed in other shows, but not here. There are two factions of characters - caustic, annoying & selfish on one side and hapless, spineless & pathetic on the other. It's a cringe-fest that offers no actual entertainment. I couldn't finish it. And don't tell me that if I'd stuck with it I'd like the end. There's simply too much good tv out there to waste my time enduring the insufferable in order to get to a nice finish.
So funny!

This series was so much fun to watch, my sister and I watched it in one sitting. I don't want to give anything away. This show is a true gem. The actors are all top natch. I hope there is a season 2...it would be a real shame if it ends with one.
Fantastic comedy and drama

This is such a good show the writing and acting are brilliant and how it all unfolds is just great. I've binged watched the series and you get comedy, drama, emotion and the scenes are just superb. It might be very British but it is very good.
Good fun

Shall persist but....

I wanted to like this series after a promising start of sorts with the pilot but on to part 2 one or two of the characters have become irritating likely you can guess which, simply overpowering the plot such as it is. Comedy, even of the ilk of FT, skirt the precipice of cringeworthiness and this is an example of going over that line. Ellie White replays her role in The Windsors (a consistently excellent series) while her oppo the ghastly Kat and her mother (I am usually a fan of Finneran) are like rogue elephants whenever they are let loose.
Finally, quite what the people responsible for the casting had on their mind for one character in particular baffles me given uptight Aunty Beeb.
If subtlety is your game forget this erratic, ought-to-be-better "comedy" - it aint Friday Night Dinner for sure!
You Must Watch this Gem!

I have never been moved to write a review for a television show, but I had to sign the praises for The Other One. This is a classic odd-couple set-up, but it is so much more. Drop dead funny -- incredible acting and writing. Each character, although hapless in his or her own individual way, has so much heart. So even as you are laughing at them, you are loving them. The evolution of the plot, the development of each character and their relationships -- each cleverly devised. My biggest complaint is that Season 2 only has 5 episodes. How dare they? There had better be a proper Season 3. All hail the Catherine Walcotts (and Callum)!
Great series, great characters
