Best Movie I've Seen In A Long Time
arseniy6 July 2019
Exquisite attention to detail. Damn near immaculate really. Every frame, every detail - seeming to've been very thoroughly and effectively thought-out. Yet all this, without anything that struck me as over-pushing or over-selling. Deeply impressive; not just for a movie lover or a comedy lover in general, but also for someone who is not entirely unfamiliar with the specific subject matter at hand.

late Soviet Union
Kirpianuscus6 April 2021
A decent portrait of Soviet life in the middle of 80 s. A stand - up commedian, political, familial, professional pressures and its violent reaction front to a general party. Basic virtues - Alexey Agranovich effort to create fair portrait of Boris Arkadiev and the precise traits of diyng world of Soviet Union. The basic sin - it is a film only for the viewers knowing entire history of the Soviet Union / East - Central Europe behind the colapse of Comunist regimes. The source of my rating - it is an eternal story , about Russia and not only.

Trivial

A dull film about nothing much. Even Prazdnik and The Death of Stalin were more on point.

USSR equals vodka and space!

Warning: Spoilers
Maybe this film is too fresh yet? Maybe it hasn't reached the right audience? Anyway, I was surprised to see its rather poor rating. Apart from the filming and the acting- which are specific to any good Russian film- The Humorist is an exquisite piece of flashback into communist Russia; well, towards its apparent dissolution at least. Living in an ex-communist country myself I could fully appreciate how well was rendered the more or less subtle involvement of the secret service in every aspect of people's lives, the permanent fear of saying too much, of acting too boldly or not enough. For me the climax was the perplexing decision of the government to satisfy the last wishes of the dying cosmonauts, i.e. to bring for them their favourite artists way down to Baikonur, considering they were going to be blown to smithereens way up in the sky. But then , as with all good dictatorships, none of the tragedy transpired in the news; on the contrary, like all space missions, this one was fully successful as well! As for the seemingly luxurious dwelling of the general, just like the generous apartment which the hero's family was enjoying in a communist Moscow where housing was a terrible issue, one has to have lived such times in order to understand what it cost to benefit from such favours. As for the sauna scene- an ex-church? funny- it leads one to considering Roman assasination plots. Oh, so familiar. All in all, an excellent slice of communist life and also very convincing through the last scene. Yes, our protagonist did make the pact and he survived long after the 80's, enjoying tremendous success with his Artur Ilich monkey.

Let's laugh?!
vertexedportal4 March 2019
After watching the Dude's interview with Idowym (Director/writer) many things fell into place.

And the atmosphere Of Soviet Jurmala 1984 and posters (Space Odyssey 2001) in the room of the son of the protagonist, and the allusion to Rome in the bath/sauna of the one who died of a heart attack when joked about his wife. and about the story/joke like "damn sawing the wing of the plane" in retroshare with the beach in the beginning of the film.

  • Would you sign for your daughter, please?!»
  • "Well, you, for one, sign»

"Vodka and Space, Vodka and Space" - this is the national idea of Russia/RSFSR, which comes pop comedian Boris arkadjevs (Boriss Arkadjevs). But in my recent dialogue with.. .

-sergio_leone: "the Horror. I hate beer. Generally all that is less than 40 degrees this swill... In my humble opinion.»

-powerboatthev: "I'm the opposite of Apple Jack - not really. there are more appetizers»

-sergio_leone: "Vodyaru I'm also not particularly. But there's brandy, whiskey, ouzo, Grappa, Metaxa, cognac, moonshine after all... Vodka is evil. Deadlock branch. It tastes like brake fluid... In short chemistry a crappy... It would be better if Mendeleev invented ether, and did not invent vodka.»

  • zadralov: "He never invented it. Your KO.»

-sergio_leone: "and to hell with her... Vodka is evil from her blurred mind is. But normal European alcohol (especially 12-year-old Metaxa and Grappa) relaxes and gives a feeling of lightness and positive perception»

It's just something!
vladislavsvetlichny11 March 2024
Warning: Spoilers
His is probably the best film about comedians in Russia, and the reference to ComedyClub is absolutely bomb. The film can be watched purely for the scene in 2018 and Face's rap in the credits; it's not hard to guess what the monkey's middle name is now. And the film is also relevant, since it was not allowed to pay for itself, being removed from distribution in most cinemas, as Medinsky liked to do, for whom Putin even came up with a special position. And the surroundings are a closed space, but not a single element of modernity and a lot of details! It is not for nothing that, in addition to Russia, the former republic and the country of the social bloc worked on the film: Latvia and the Czech Republic. The poster is simply something, it conveys the essence of the film without words. But true films, even about another era, are not welcome in Russian distribution. How frightening and relevant the poster of this film looked on the facade of the Evropeisky shopping mall near the Kyiv metro station when I was in my first year of college.
