Did not expect that

Supergirl is the show that I've honestly had more trouble with out of all the CW shows. Its lack of good villains, over-drama from characters, etc etc. So in the middle of season 2 I stopped watching it and only do with the ones that spark my attention. This was one of them. I decided to watch this expecting more drama and stupid plot, but it wasn't like that. In fact, I loved it. I guess it doesn't give much to the season's plot, but it went a long way to make me care more for both of them and it succeeded. Part of the job was of course done by the wonderful young actors, that can not only play the part really well but look just the same! I mean, that young kara in some shots WAS her! I was honestly taken aback by the uncanny resemblance, better than most movies. The character development was really good, I felt for Kenny and the police being the bad guy came as a nice surprise. Even tough of course it's full of high-school clichés I don't mind if it works well, and it did. Overall, I think the show supergirl is at its best in chapters like this: not villains with muahaha plans, forced political views, etc. It's when it focuses on her well done characters, specially the implications of a nice girl like Kara having these powers. This chapter made me care more and understand her turn on humanity and I can say it's the first episode of the season I loved.

Superb young actresses
dominionlimo-7561630 April 2020
Kudos to the casting department for finding two young actresses who could be clones of the actresses portraying the older Alex and Kara. Not only do these two young talents closely physically resemble their older counterparts; the younger ones clearly spent time studying the expressions and mannerisms of the elders the better to mimic them. One can hope they will return in future flashbacks.

As I've said for 3 seasons, Supergirl has never quite been able to nail the difficult task of building a story line from the beginning of the season to the end. It's much more of procedural show than it is as a serialized show. I mean this mostly in terms of how they progress each season's big bad, because let's face it, there's never truly been a big bad to any season this show has produced thus far. With that said, tonight's episode of Supergirl falls right in line with a show that doesn't have an exact direction, but it wasn't a bad episode by any stretch of the imagination. I think my main thought running through the entire hour though was "what is honestly the point?".

The episode strictly dealt with Alex and Kara's younger selves as they were still at an age of being constantly at odds with one another and deal with high school drama on a regular basis. The plot involved a predator, drugs, and a murder mystery. Where the heck did that come from? Well, it's not something I would have asked for (ever) from this show, but it wasn't as bad as it sounds. The two young actresses they got to play young Alex and young Kara not only look the part, but had solid enough chemistry to hold their own for an episode.

Again, the whole murder mystery and other various criminal activity wasn't necessary and didn't really provide a lot thematically, but this was all about showing the bond between Kara and Alex in a different light. So in that way, it succeeded. Actually come to think of it, this episode felt like something straight out of Riverdale, or any other CW-teen show. And that's pretty much it in terms of plot and things to comment on. It was a serviceable episode (as I love to say oh so often), but nothing I would ever watch again.

Young Kara and Alex - Amazing
mikeha-34 March 2019
A bit of late review because I'm just catching up on Netflix. The actresses who played younger versions of Kara and Alex were simply amazing. They had the intonations and mannerisms of the older versions of themselves down pat. Really stellar performances, especially when Kenny and Kara share a moment together under the stars. Great bookend story and terrific writing using every little object and device to their full potential!

Wonderful new backstory

Warning: Spoilers
Perfect portrayal of the younger Kara and Alex. Very good cast and wonderful to learn more about the relation between Kara and Alex. It is wonderful to see that Supergirl took the time for a good backstory and not rushing through. It is definitely one of my favorite episodes, alongside Myriad and Alex.

best of season 3 so far!
xthicix19 November 2017
The best episode of season 3 so far! The younger kara and alex did a amazing job. I was amazed by them. Such a great chemistry they had together. Kara and Alex remains the heart and soul of the series. I think this could easily became a spin off show. I only wished we had more Kara and Akex in the present day, but other than that, perfect episode!

One of my faves

Very nice, welcome little departure from the usual storylines. Realistic portrayal of the volatile nature of young teen siblings, no Leave-it-to-Beaver idealism here. Actresses who portrayed young Alex and Kara could not have been better cast. Very touching overall.

Supergirl or Smallville?
lassegalsgaard-4528425 January 2018
Warning: Spoilers
So, it's worth to note that before we had "Supergirl" we had "Smallville." A show that also focused on one of the last surviving children of Krypton, and which turned out to be a fairly enjoyable show. And this week on "Supergirl", the writers decided to take a break from the overarching story and give a little space to further develop the relationship between Kara and Alex. They do that by showing a major event from their past that changed their perspective on everything; including each other. I always enjoy these episodes, especially on shows like "Supergirl" and "Legends of Tomorrow." And this is definitely one of the season's best episodes, standing out among a lot of episodes that have been disappointing to say the least. I think the break was exactly what the show needed, and I think they did a great job of showing us how our favorite leading ladies became loving and caring sisters to each other.

This was an enjoyable episode and mostly because of the intriguing flashback story. It dealt with some very serious subject matter, without scaling back on the seriousness of it all. The murder of a child is something that the writers could easily have been too afraid of doing, but the fact that they actually did, made me commend the writers. They have gotten some balls and have stepped up their game. I don't know if they will continue having this level of writing throughout their upcoming episodes, but one can always hope. Especially considering that this show is the one with the weakest and most inconsistent writing team.

The new young actresses who plays the younger versions of Kara and Alex were really good. Much better than the former actresses they had playing the parts, and the showrunners actually went out and got someone who looks like the younger versions of Melissa Benoist and Chyler Leigh. It can be hard to do that, and even harder to hope that they are good performers, but I think they found a good blend of both. They had some emotional moments in the episode that I think they pulled off beautifully. I do believe that the school setting helped them seem more at home, since these young actresses seems like they still attend school.

I liked the murder mystery element of this episode, as it also set the stage for Alex's future profession. It gave some real grit to the episode which is something that "Supergirl" generally lacks, because they focus most of their time on being fun and goofy. I appreciated that they shed the goofy aspects away in this episode, and focused on some more gritty stuff. Now that I think about it, this season has actually done a good job of hiding that fun element away, but they have done it through emotional turmoil for the characters, which haven't worked for me so far, and I don't expect that to change in the near future.

Now, I do believe that this episode is a bit inconsistent. In the first season, we got an episode that showed Kara and Alex as children, where they had fun together and liked each other. However, that episode is cast aside to make room for this more intriguing storyline. It's like they retconned the original development between them to make something new, which I understand as this story is better, but I don't like that the showrunners are inconsistent with their material. Also, J'onn shows up in the episode, but in disguise as Kara's mother ... who's in disguise as an FBI agent. As far as I remember, J'onn doesn't know what Kara's mother look like, so it wouldn't make sense that he would be able to turn into her. Now, that might be explained later, but for me, that was a bit weird.

And I wished we had gotten a little more development with the characters in the present day. We only have two scenes featuring Benoist and Leigh, but I think we could have had at least one more to develop them a little bit. It's mostly Alex being angry at Kara for no apparent reason, which felt very forced and a cheap trick to open the door for the flashbacks.

13 Reasons Why Life Is Strange
Oneirosophos7 March 2018
Warning: Spoilers
This is an attempt of the series to give us a backstory/origin of Kara's relationship with her sister, in a bit Smallville-ish way.

Alex broke up with Margarita and Kara takes her to ol'mama's house and they remember that each relationship is equally unstable. And thus, we dive into a murder case (OMG THEY KILLED KENNY) of a typical high school made in USA. That was the first time that Alex turned a good eye on her sister and really liked her.

And that's all. The only really good thing of this episode is the fact that breaks up the melancholy/depression of each and every episode in this dark season. But besides that, it's the most meaningless episode, after many serious themes debated in the previous ones.

So, consider it a chicky filler.

Izabela Vidovic, wow!
RavenGlamDVDCollector3 October 2019
Warning: Spoilers
A SUPERGIRL episode with Melissa mostly absent? I'd not have given much for its chances of amounting to anything. This ain"t my favorite show and I criticize its leftist leanings front, right and center. But... Hearty congratulations to the casting department for coming up wiyh Izabela Vidovic. One of the few things the showrunners did right. The youngster did a fantastic job and she seems uncannily to ACTUALLY be the real Melissa Benoist in younger form.

But!

Predictable!

You know why?

That Sheriff Collins seemed like a top-notch kind of guy. Since he was a White dude, I realized instantly that couldn't fit in with the scheme of things. In this anti-American pro-Communist show, no White Male is any good (okay, one exception, that wynn guy, you will notice that I refrain from using a capital letter) it is only Black Males that are noble, so... you do the math.

(Oh, Old McCarthy could have caught a handful of live ones if this was the Old Days...)

Some other loose notes:

1) Chyler Leigh is down this season. It has nothing to do with the plotline. Of course Alex is going through trauma, but Chyler's down. So at those last scenes with her, couldn't we have kept the younger version? :) ----okay, a bit of kidding here. I like old Chyler. Unfortunately NOT ANOTHER TEENAGE MOVIE was a long time ago...

2) I don't like David Harewood. Creepy. Always creepy. I'm glad he can't fly. Hell, we'd have needed umbrellas... that ostrich dude up there... (okay, not in this episode)

3) I don't like Jeremy Johnson, glad he wasn't in this episode.

4) Helen Slater, what a beautiful person. Utmost respect.

5) Melissa, what a stupendously gorgeous girl. Three seasons in, she still looks like most cheerleaders can only dream of...
