Svaha: The Sixth finger review
JoeytheBrit28 June 2020
A Korean pastor who specialises in investigating crooked or corrupt religious movements stumbles upon a series of murders that seem to be connected to ancient mythology. A complicated horror mystery with a strong sense of foreboding that makes for a confusing watch at times, but which comes good in the end.

Complex and Interesting
gjcannon-7314927 June 2019
First of all, I really liked the cinematography, lighting, all the things we take for granted in a well-made film that are so obviously missing in a poor film. One shot was like a Dutch Old Master painting, you may spot it. The plot is rather complicated in following the work of an academic debunker of cults and the charlatans who mean to profit, or worse, through manipulation of followers. There is a weird mix of Buddhist and Christian influences in Korean culture which might puzzle viewers in the West like me, but it is worth paying attention and sticking with the story.

Messy
Foutainoflife11 June 2019
This is would be much better if it weren't so messy. The plot is interesting, camera work is good, actors were decent and the effects were ok. For me, there are problems.

There are times where I almost felt that I was watching four different stories. Story one is about a girl and her twin sister, who is a demon or evil. Story two is about a cop who is working a murder case. Story three is about a group of boys who were sent to juvie for various reasons and came out on a mission. And, story four is about a pastor who investigates cults.

It isn't unusual to have several storylines that are interlaced and this one is but it has been done in an odd way. There are characters who are introduced but we see very little of them throughout the film. It is also a bit convoluted when it came to giving a clear understanding about all that was going on but I will be fair in saying that I was watching the film with subtitles and some things may have been lost in translation.

This is marketed as a horror film but it felt like a thriller to me. I watch a lot of horror though and I may be somewhat desensitized. Nothing about it every really rose to a level of horror. Creepy. Maybe. Not horror though.

It isn't a terrible movie. It was hard to follow.

Svaha: The Sixth Finger

A thought-provoking and refreshing religious movie that is able to stand on its own simply based on its concept. The film features a cast of interesting, albeit slightly underused characters. However, I feel the film's downfall is that it tried too much around what is a rather simple lore. Some scenes felt unnecessary but the final plot twist worked very well.

Overall, a good movie
Biskuitt19 May 2019
Pastor Park is infamous for his debunking attitude towards religious stigma, cult belief, its bad practices and how it exploits the mind of general people of a society. It ultimately led him to a cult religious group called Deer Mount which happened to be related to lot of murders of young children who were born in 1999.

This film had "The Wailing (2016)" vibe from the beginning for some reason. Story focuses on specific people only. It had a huge potential to work and build some other characters. Only problem of this film is it lacks a good continuation of some characters that they introduced in the movie, completely drops them later as if they don't exist. I wanted to see police and Pastor Park working together.

Jae-hyun Jang is still young and a toddler among other veteran directors. Writers were inexperienced also. What I liked is, I saw they are hard working people; writers, directors..everyone. It shows that they tried their best to make it happen. It's not too long that there will be some good and great masterpiece from them after right amount of experience they achieve.

I have 0 complain about the actors. All did their parts professionally. This is what I like about Korean Film industry, the actors are super veteran when it comes to acting and you won't find anything to complain.

Ending was satisfying. Final 20 minutes of the film is really does the magic, it literally revived the whole film. I really like some of the symbolic messages they conveyed via Dogs, Elephant and Bird; is pure gold attached to Babylonian mythology. Kudos to director and writers for portraying it in such mysterious way.

Cinematography was average. Too many cuts and angle changes in some of the shots. In films like such as this one, it is best to keep a shot as long as possible since sudden cuts and angle change can and will kill some important momentum and it did for this movie.

Overall, really liked the film. I will give it 7. Don't know why it is so low in rating but definitely not a low six film.

You have to focus but it's worth it
This was a pretty great movie on multiple fronts. The story was intriguing and thought provoking, the picture and shot quality were quite beautiful and it had some really great acting with some fun spooky elements.

Now if you're going into this looking for pure horror, you're not gonna get it. This ends up rounding out at much more of a mystery/thriller with some horror elements.

When watching a foreign film, it is inevitable that some things are going to be lost in translation, so just know that any critiques made... I am cognizant of that. Now, with that being said, I feel as though the storyline got a little convoluted and confusing particularly in the second half. I think a lot of that has to do with lots of names being thrown around that are hard to keep track of as an English speaker and the subtitles moving particularly fast, faster than most other foreign films that I have watched. I watch a good bit of them and I found myself having to rewind quite a bit to catch everything.

I think there were definitely moments throughout where the story dragged a little bit and could have benefited from a bit of a shorter run time but overall I think this was most certainly successful. It feels quite tragic and induces a bit of existential dread, but it is a captivating, eerie tale that is worth it. Would recommend.

I need context

The story and writing are actually pretty interesting, but disappointing climax. If only they took more of a horror approach than detective twisty twist theme, the movie might feel less forced.

Highly recommended, for some.
michaeljohnharding24 March 2020
The bad reviews are because it's complicated. Not a typical film. Unless you're looking for simple escapism, you will enjoy this one. Theological and existential. Loads of great scenes and set pieces.

Side to Korean culture I hadn't seen in movies. Buddhist monk with a Nespresso machine, youth offender prisons, quarries etc.

The plot has a lot of "in scene" detective work and characters working out what's going on, kind of like The Wire, but in this case the detective work involves complex Buddhist iconography and monastic structure. Some who prefer simple guts and kinetic story might struggle. Hence the bad reviews - most films are way more simple, the people who are unhappy are comparing it to those expectations.

For fans of the Wailing, cult obsessives, people with spiritual beliefs. I'm personally atheist but the depth of spiritual enquiry in this film really touched me. "How can there be a God in a world like this?"

Decent but at last forgettable
aronharde15 April 2024
In 2019's "Svaha: The Sixth Finger" we are introduced to Pastor Park who is hired to look into a suspicious cult thinking that their foundation is built on evil. I really enjoy South Korean horror and I think they always have unique ideas and this movie is no exception. It is mysterious and interesting and there is lots of things packed into the two hours run time. However I think that this movie could have been 20-30 minutes shorter and with all the things implemented in the movie none of them are really elaborated or have any impact. The movie is really slow paced which I don't mind if the payoff is good enough and in this case I would say that it's a decent pay off that is worth the wait. The movie is nothing groundbreaking and we follow Pastor Park unraveling the story and what's behind all of it. I enjoyed the watch but I think that this movie wasn't too memorable and therefore just an enjoyable cult flick some with some nice ideas. [5,7/10]

Unfortunately rather boring
mister_bateman21 August 2019
I wanted to like it but ended up just being bored. The atmosphere of the movie starts out great, it creates a really dark and mysterious canvas. But unfortunately it doesn't manage to build any suspense and the story ends up being rather uninteresting.

Great Korean Folk Horror
Pairic4 June 2020
Svaha: The Sixth Finger: South Korea, the Reverend Park investigates fringe Cults, he is paid by Christian and Buddhist organisations to take a closer look at their whackier offshoots. We see him being attacked by nasty nuns from the Agape Convent. He is presently investigating the Deer Hill Buddhist movement, superficially they appear to be a small, alms giving sect. Park sends a spy into them and discovers that they follow an obscure and esoteric form of Buddhism, they worship Generals who are actually Heavenly Kings. They also hold sacred a Buddhist text which is the equivalent of the Christian Book of Revelation and believe 81 Evil Ones will be born, basically Anti-Buddhas, The Cult are determined that these abominations must be killed. We have already witnessed a strange birth where one twin has bitten another in the womb, both survive but the biter seems to be demonic and is kept in a shed, her cries disturb animals, black goats bleated madly at her birth. Murders are uncovered and it looks as if Cult members are carrying out the prophecies. But there is much more at play in this multi-layered tale of Possession, Syncretic Buddhism, Cults and the quest for immortality. A killer sees the eyeless corpses of his child victims, another dreams of demonic creatures crawling towards him. Gory murders are committed. Snakes emerge from the demonic twins' hut and bite the curious, a claw-like hand emerges from beneath the door, flocks of birds strike the main home. Writer/Director Jang Jae-hyun delivers a worthy addition to the Korean Folk Horror Film Canon. 8/10. On Netflix.

Unnessasarily Tragic.
Nemesis4226 May 2020
Warning: Spoilers
For me it was ultimately unsatisfying. Why didn't the pure spirit deal will the evil spirit 'before' all of those innocent victims were slaughtered? Seems pointless and illogical. Though there might be some religious or cultural factors that influenced this story to play out like this, such that it became so overwhelmingly tragic. Otherwise it's solid film craft, well done to all involved.

Terrible in two cultures and several religions. Meh.
ranwulfs2 August 2022
An incoherent mish-mash of various eastern & western religions and their esoteric off-shoots and assorted occult nonsense, puréed and poured over some kind of murder mystery with a narrative structure so poorly pasted together it collapses under its own weight . A total waste of time and effort. I watched this with my Korean neighbor who rolled her eyes through the entire movie, so it isn't that I couldn't "appreciate the culture," it's just crap. Save yourself several hours of saying "wtf," and give this weird, pointless story a wide berth. You're welcome.

Compelling
Leofwine_draca2 June 2019
Warning: Spoilers
I'm not a huge fan of religion in the movies; it usually results in something dry and unwieldy, more polemic than entertainment. However, SVAHA: THE SIXTH FINGER is something else besides. Coming across in essence as a Korean version of THE OMEN, this is compelling viewing indeed: thought-provoking, engrossing, and highly literate with it. The story in an essence is about a fraud-busting private sleuth who finds himself investigating a world-ending prophecy, hunting for an apparently dead Buddhist priest and others caught up in a life-or-death struggle against the forces of evil.

This is a gorgeous-looking movie, once more made with excellent cinematography, editing, you name it. The cast don't put a foot wrong while the detective story layers in plenty of context, subtext and exposition in a way which is never less than engaging. There are twists and turns throughout, decent character development, and only the occasional reliance on CGI spook scares. It's the kind of mature storytelling that the Koreans do so expertly.

So boring it will make you fall asleep...
paul_haakonsen4 June 2019
Of course I had to watch "Svaha: The Sixth Finger" when I found it on Netflix, given the fact that it is a South Korean movie. Plus, the synopsis for the movie made it sound rather interesting.

However, the truth was far from this fact. Because "Svaha: The Sixth Finger" was most definitely not interesting. It was unfathomably slow paced and tedious. In fact, the pacing of the movie dragged down the overall enjoyment to the point where it was becoming a pain in the you-know-what to sit there and witness on the screen. And the fact that the character gallery was essentially as interesting as wet cardboard didn't really help to improve either.

I have no idea what director Jae-hyun Jang was trying to accomplish with this movie, because it was pure torture to sit through. I ended up turning off this stinking heap of a movie halfway through, out of sheer and complete boredom, and having absolutely no interest in any of the characters whatsoever.

Not even with the likes of Jung-jae Lee in the movie, was it possible to salvage this movie that sank faster than even Titanic.

It should be said that the production value to the movie was good. And that at least counts for something. But weighed against a so slowed pace that it felt like the movie was going in reverse, pointless characters and a frightfully lack of proper storyline, then good production only serves so little.

I have no interest of returning to finish this boring movie, because there seriously was nothing worth of any kind for me here. It was sheer and pure boredom in its purest form.

Thought provoking masterpiece; philosophically engaging and metaphysically cogent, 'Svaha' is an indelible piece of powerful cinema.
asphyxion_25 March 2020
6.2??!! Such a low rating for what is undoubtedly the most important and reinvigorating horror-genre offering since 'The 6th Sense.' I know 10/10 reviews are easy to ignore for the glaring bias they wear on their sleeves and their usual (in)capacity for analysis/critique on the film at hand. But I can't help that this almost-entirely unknown Korean occult thriller is possibly the best 'horror' movie I've ever watched.

The film is expertly layered. While seemingly disparate and disjointed at first, the eventual coalescing of narratives towards the end creates an unforgettable mind-blowing plot climax that, in not so subtle ways, turns the morality and metaphysical meandering expressed by the characters completely around in the last thirty minutes of this two hour slowburning masterpiece.

'Svaha' is the kind of intellectually stimulating mystery that comes around and gets its due recognition once in a generation. What starts out as a supremely grim and foreboding horror story slowly unravels it's threads after doing a deftful job of conjuring what is probably one of, if not THE, most tantalizing and discomforting clouds of atmospheric dread mounted on the big screen since William Friedkin blessed us with The Exorcist. What starts out as a clearly defined set of Good and Evil characters--and their likewise motivations--slowly morphs into an engaging visual essay on viewing morality through the lens of balance instead of human emotion or tradition scripture; these traditional Judeo-Christian/Postmodern(seemingly contradictory, I know) concepts of right and wrong get run through the Boddhisatva ringer as the wool is pulled from our eyes and the scales fall. What we are ultimately left with is one of the most memorable conclusions to a plot arc I've ever seen on film.

Unfortunately, not all viewers feel the way about The Sixth Finger that I do. I'm utterly amazed at the low scores that nagged about the plot's 'ultimate incoherence' or 'lack of real direction.' These negative comments couldn't be further from reality than they already are. The story wraps up in an arresting, lyrical fashion that almost gives the viewer a sense of genuine epiphany on the nature of eschatology, not to mention a heartfelt concern for the characters openly seeking salvation after realizing the true nature of their 'faith based acts' and how it upended the lives and fates of all involved.

While Svaha is billed as a horror film, I liken it more to an Occult Mystery/Thriller since the horror elements rapidly disipate after the first half hour of run time. The religious and philosophy deep dives substitute ominous string music as the film goes from horror, to forensics, to religious occult mystery in the blink of an eye.

To describe Svaha is to spoil it; it has to be experienced without preconceptions or subjective thoughts. But bottom line: it HAS to be experienced. Genre fans looking for that long-sought-after intellectual psycho-horror should look no further than Svaha. And brush up on the tenants of the major and minor schools of Buddhism while you're at it. It will markedly improve your ability to string together the ideas explored in Svaha, making them much easier to digest if you're a layman to the whole "religious beliefs" thing.

I hope Svaha reaches a wider audience and moves away from being an unknown cult horror classic. It deserves to be seen and taken seriously in its thematic endeavors. It's one of the most emotionally invested scripts I've seen in a Korean movie and IMO puts The Wailing's hamfisted attempt at creating an ambiguous ending to near-total shame. This is a horror movie with serious questions and even more serious answers, and we lowly viewers will undoubtedly get those answers eventually when the film finally peaks at its apex.

5/5 -- 10/10 -- A+ This is what a religious horror centered around faith-disillusionment and Buddhist ideals would look if Terrence Mellnick directed a philosophical horror film' (Thin Red Line has its utterly horrifying moments, like seeing the young landmine victims in the bush for the first time). Must watch for all horror buffs and Korean Cinema gurus!! Take a break from the gore-gasboard slashers and give your brain some exercise instead 👍

Not all Korean films are good !
honeybloggs-696489 November 2021
I love Korean horror films . They have an 'edge' that Hollywood doesn't . . But this film was extremely disappointing. It has everything dumped into it , humour, sadness ,and a feeble attempt at horror . This film has FOUR different stories! . You see one story and set of characters , then suddenly you see completely different characters in a different location and a different story . . Then it switches again to yet another story and set of characters! I thought that perhaps I'd accidentally clicked on to an entirely different film ! . There are directors who have managed to tell different stories in a film successfully . But this director has failed miserably .

The acting is appalling too ! Thie film is just one big pile of steaming horse manure . It's as though some person , with limited imagination has , jotted down all these random ideas and dumped them altogether to make a film .A ten year old could have done a much better job.

I love Korean films, follow the ones which have high ratings, watch many more than once. Maybe I should try watching this one again. But this was a garbled mess, and hard, if not impossible to follow.

You need to have some knowledge about Buddhism to understand the movie, words like samsara, dharma, nirvana, lamaism, etc. Overall the movie is interesting and has a good mysterious atmosphere. Something refeshing for the genre, but this was maybe because im from west. If you are from East maybe you will be already familiarized. I give 7/10 but im biased so i gave it 8.

Svaha: The 6th Finger Personal Movie Critic
umhsai11 May 2020
For those movie-watchers who admire mystery, occult and exorcism movies, this movie is definitely a great recommendation. It is directed by Jang Jae-Hyun, who is awarded as the Best New Director from his also blockbuster movie, The Priests. The story line is a whole mind-bugging narrative. The way the scenes unfold is clear and interesting. The tone is set right. Thanks to the convincing cinematography and the talented acting of the casts and convincing direction of Jang Jae-Hyun himself. The director did great in choosing how the story is told. The beginning of the movie left me with lots of questions and the ending gave me the right answers to them. The pacing of each scene is satisfying because it is neither too fast nor too slow. It is just the right amount. The cinematography added flavor to the overall taste of the movie. The coloring and lighting really helped in making the movie more engaging to watch. The set felt alive. The setting really contributed to the enthralling sensation. The pacing is clearly organized. It was full of mystery at the beginning of the movie and I love how each scene is tied together to form a worthwhile ending. I am a big fan of this genre and I am greatly satisfied with this movie. I always admire how Koreans are creative with their stories and how skillful they are to putting the actions alive in a movie. I will not hesitate to recommend this movie to my friends.

I know it's just a movie .But it's not relevant to spiritual side of Buddhism . To the contrary, it tries to portray darker image of some aspects of Buddhism . At times , it felt like it was produced by groups of people with strong belief systems and cognitive dissonance .

I found this movie quite boring. After only 50 minutes had passed, it felt like at least 2 hours had passed. But my biggest issue with this film, is how people can be all pious, yet still not raise an eyebrow of rows of dogs in small cages.
