Long, complexly scripted story that is well worth watching
RockyMtnVideo28 December 2017
I almost bailed on this, due to impressions from the first episode. Some of that has been alluded to by at least one other reviewer. One set of characters (no spoilers here) are a squad of police detectives who are somewhat inept, but in the first episode, that is a bit overdone, coming off a bit too much like "slapstick comedy, gone very, very wrong". It just seemed a bit too childish. But, based upon the IMDB reviews, and score, I went ahead and watched the next episode, which led to me quickly being addicted (and the Episode 1 silliness did not recur). There are just a continuous set of "hooks" (revelations) that keep you wondering what is going to happen next, and those are all part of a larger story that is woven together, revelation by revelation.

Although there are a handful of core characters, this is one of those stories where you have to pay close attention, as the underlying story is a much larger canvas than is obvious up front, and as more details are revealed, and events from different timeframes are woven into the story, there are a lot of "things" to keep track of (both people and events). Certainly, it works better, IMHO, to be able to watch the series in a shorter timeframe (e.g. Binge-watching it in chunks), just because it has so much going on.

It is the fact that most of the ongoing revelations are not so much "adding pieces to the puzzle", as they are "turning the puzzle on its head", that makes it so interesting. Those regular "twists" are also not unrealistic, i.e. (IMHO) they aren't just ridiculous, unlikely plot devices. There are often flashbacks that show events as they happen, to further weave those ever-growing plot elements into the larger story. Again, some of those flashbacks involve the same characters, at different ages, so you need to pay attention in order to tie everything together. (Much as with another really great series, "Dark", you can't be sitting on the couch, texting on your phone, while you attempt to watch this, or you will quickly find yourself lost.)

Anyway, I'm obviously providing no real details about the story, to avoid any spoilers, but suffice it to say that I believe that anyone how watches the first few episodes, will either find themselves as hooked as I was, OR, they will simply decide that it's not a story that interests them at all. Just don't bail out instantly, after the first episode. Its initial tone is simply not representative of the larger story being told. It's a long journey (some of the episodes are long), but well worth the trip.

Loved everything but the last episode
stephenesc-4312622 August 2018
Warning: Spoilers
I had never watched any type of Korean television before this show, so I had no real frame of reference for expectations, and I was thoroughly impressed. It basically had everything in it-cheesy romance, sincere romance, goofy action sequences, impressively realistic action sequences, slapstick comedy, heartache, spiritual plains, historical fiction, and more-and none of it felt forced or out of place.

I wanted to give the show 10/10 but the last episode literally undoes all the good deeds the male protagonist did throughout the series. Then it wraps up like it would be possible for the main characters to meet up afterwards. It wouldn't. It left me feeling disappointed after enjoying it as much as I did.

Awesome show but ending is disappointing

Warning: Spoilers
Okay. This is one my my favorites for sure. The first episode was tough to stay interested in but if you keep watching, you might just get hooked. I was hooked for sure. The characters were hilarious. I felt like each scene was getting better and better....until around the middle of the show (went downhill). 1st...the plots just too much and too complicated (not that I can't keep up). There's so much to piece together, and you can't unless you keep watching but that's the thing...it leaves you confused about a lot. 2nd...there's too much going back and forth, from past to present. 3rd...the show was supposed to be about ha ram and her eyes but the story shifted to the life of Joon. I feel like there wasn't enough of Ha ram in the show. Whenever they would show her, it would be something tragic happening to her or others putting her down. Not enough good moments. I liked the idea of her and the grim but I feel like they had so much more potential then how the story continued...which left me mad. Would have been more interesting if it was just about that grim reaper falling in love with her (no Joon in the picture). 4th...to much detective work, and action in general 5th...the ending made me very mad and ruined pretty much everything 6th....the idea could have work out better if she discovered that that's been Joon all along or if there was no Joon, she would come to love the reaper cus he's like the only one that gets her...idk could have been so much cooler

overall, loved it, recommend it. It made me laugh a lot. I love the characters. Just that endinggg ughhhh cmonnnn. WHy?????????????????

one more thing...a few things didn't make sense. Like her not seeing the shadow in him??

Master Craft Writing
jasonguthrie-2424616 December 2017
I genuinely don't think I have seen a better show. Finished watching it last night and I am still reeling from the depth of the show. The detail they went into, how much they inter weaved the plot was nothing short of masterful.

The more I think about the show the more I realised just how well they did everything. For example most of the characters are introduced negatively, there is always something about them to give you reason to either hate or look down on them slightly. Such as the main character starting out by always being sick and feeling pathetic but with every one of them they make them feel human. They grow on you to change into what feels like people you can understand and its done so insanely well.

Its probably the only show where before I was probably half way through I was already thinking of re-watching it to figure out all the details and clues they left for us along the way.

You actually have to watch the whole season to understand the big picture!
faithkjafs8 February 2018
It's ridiculous to read reviews of people who only watched 10 minutes of the pilot episode. It's like judging a book after just reading the first page. I thought this was Chinese TV to start with, turns out its south Korean. VERY NICE. Important to get all the details or else you will lose track of whats really happening.

Enjoy!

Definitely worth your time!

Complex storyline, interesting character development, good mixture of dark and light-hearted moments. It definitely gets better with each episode. Everyone who likes unusual and mysterious characters, amazing plot twists and fantasy, crime or mystery shows should give this show a try.

Superb Story Line! Highly recommend! Some Spoilers
pebbl327 December 2017
Warning: Spoilers
Black was made available on Netflix and my love for kdrama and thrillers prompted me to give this series a try. I have seen many series that are similar but Black had me blown away. The first episode reeled me in and before I knew it, I had finished this series in less than a week. The suspense, the action, the romance, and the acting was superb. I applaud the writers, producers, and actors for doing an excellent job with this series. I have never felt so many emotions. I'm in desperate need of a season 2 now that it ended. I'm not sure how that will be developed but it would be great to see the actors act again. SSH and Go Ara tugged at my heart. The chemistry was out of this world. It made me hurt for them. What an ill-fated love. I really do wish that the ending wasnt rushed. As a romanticist, I really wanted Black and Haram to be together. How can they deny us of that when the relationship was building up? It was disappointing to have to see that she had forgotten everything and passes away as an old woman. This ending was bittersweet.

Maybe, there would be a season 2 to explain more in depth of how Joon became a grim reaper again when he has ceased to exist. And why he is still in the body of Moo Gang. It doesn't feel right. Maybe there shouldn't have been ending. Maybe the ending we saw is just Joon's dream of what haram's life would be like if he never existed but it didn't go as planned. When he had requested that he never existed, it was too late. Haram had jumped and her soul was already collected and he meets her in the underworld but she doesn't remember who he is and from there the series explores the underworld, the life of grim reapers and him trying to bring back her memories. Ahhhhh, I'm too invested. This series has gotten me worked up. I do hope that there is a season 2 with the same characters. Doesn't have to be a sequel, a spin off would be great too. Just keep the same actors! Black wouldn't be Black without the characters. It gave life to the story.

I apologize for such a long review but I have to express how excellent this series was. I'm glad that I found this show. It may be confusing at first and the ending may not suffice with many, but overall the show is undeniably one of the best kdramas I have ever watched. I highly recommend watching it before judging based on reviews. Everyone has their own opinion of this show but I can guarantee that this show will live up to your expectations. I never write reviews about any shows that I have watched before but this show needed a review to showcase how exceptionally well done it was. PLEASE HAVE A SEASON 2!

Loved this story!!!!
unicornmom-128 March 2018
I started watching this series on Netflix when I had a bout of the flu and was bed bound and running out of things to watch. Someone from a horror group I belong to recommended it. I first thought it was Japanese but realized the words I was reading in the subtitles were not matching the limited Japanese I knew. After a bit I realized It was a Korean show. If you don't mind subtitles I highly recommend this show and I really hope it continues. It has it all but, mostly is a crime drama, with action, fantasy, and romance, so really right up there on my genre list. I am sad that there are only a couple episodes left for me to watch and I may not get any more of this show. The acting is great aside from some of the kinda cheesy moments. The writing is superb. I love the story and I want more. I sure hope we get a season 2. I would definitely watch it!!!!

It was almost the best
zabrina_faalua11 September 2018
The ending absolutely ruined the whole drama for me, it was 17 episodes of building up to reveal and expose, amazing action intensity and all, then episode 18 an utter disappointment...

Push Through Episode 1
fake_moviestar22 March 2020
So I almost gave up on this show half-way through episode one. It just felt a bit cheesy and the humor fell flat for me. I didn't particularly care or was interested in the main characters, and I almost decided not to watch this. Then I came on IMDB and saw another reviewer say to push past the first episode - that its pacing and cheesy humor would improve by just the second episode. So I decided to do just that - thank you other reviewer, because this ended up being a powerful, amazing story that I watched until the early morning hours for three days straight. The plot was amazing and took twists and turns I never saw coming. So please, if you are thinking of dropping this show because of the first episode, do push through to episode 2. It really is worth the time!

Meet Joe Black but didn't.
lesprovocateurx14 May 2020
Warning: Spoilers
It has the makings of a good Meet Joe Black, but the ending could have been better. It tried to put too many stories at the same time forced a love story. In the end, there was none.

Good concept, sloppily made
Glue2Screen5 June 2021
I really wanted to like this series. After reading all the reviews, I went in with home. It had all the elements I love, fantasy, super power abilities, mystery, crime solving and comedy. However, this series sadly did not meet my expectations.

As another reviewer said, there are a lot of plot holes, scattered storylines, over exaggerated scenarios and odd character decisions that ruined the overall appeal of the series. I love a good solid story but this entire show felt like a string of scenes not tied together and many forced scenes just to create a comedic moment. Every ep has scenes that could be completely cut out as it's mainly just filler.

The story of the main female protagonist is what kept me watching as the story is very intriguing but everything else felt disconnected and unexplained,

Overall, great premise with potential that needed to be tightened up.

Plot holes kinda wrecked this for me. But I still enjoyed it for what it had to offer.
harvestopals23 February 2018
Warning: Spoilers
Why didn't Ha-Ram didn't see Moo-Gang's shadow inside him when she first went to see him in the hospital? He wasn't wearing black.

Also, if Ha-Ram's dad was a grim reaper in a dead body, why did she see a shadow only at that one point (when he was wearing black, btw)? She should have seen it all the time. And why didn't she see the shadow inside him? And if it was a grim reaper who had discovered him (the shadow), wouldn't they have just snagged his rule-breaking butt and left? And, how did the murderer "kill" Ha-Ram's dad anyway? Moo-Gang just shook it off when he was slayed horrifically by a meat hook by the SAME GUY.

SIGH.

The acting was stellar, the chemistry was good, but when you have problems like that in the consistency of a plot, it makes it really hard for the audience to suspend their disbelief and just enjoy the story of an ill-fated love between a grim reaper and a girl who basically is, of all the Charlie Browns I know, the Charlie Browniest. The first half was funny and sad and reeled me in, the second half I spent confused, frustrated, and dreading the wrap up. They brought the audience into a micro view of a great story, then pulled so far back, none of the characters that we grew to know and enjoy were even in the final moments.

I don't know, in the end the drama affected me; it touched my heart and forced me to contemplate uncomfortable thoughts about life, and death, choices, and consequences. But it tripped over itself when it could have soared.

Also, who has CCTV video aimed at the side of a cliff by the ocean? That is some phenomenal security footage there, man.

Charming, almost hilarious, and dramatic
giannalara16 January 2018
Has something of everything, absurdly full of love more than drama, it's a good performance in a subreal story, obviously not for an Oscar, but to keep us in suspense. Enjoy, just if you are a romantic!

A very well thought out story arc
chris-j-chuba12 October 2020
This is an 18 episode story arc. The use of flashbacks fills in the pieces of this very complex storyline. Sometimes the director / writer shows a different character's perspective in the same episode or goes back several episodes. I have never seen anything this comprehensive. He even bridges episode 1 and 17 perfectly. Even if you end up disliking the story, you WILL understand why character X did Y. I was disappointed in the finale as well. The series peaked in the second to last episode which was absolutely magnificent. But that served to highlight the flaws in the finale. The finale was not terrible but did not live up to the standards of the previous episodes. It's as if the writer tried too hard to make that the peak and should have just let that episode ebb even more. It has the following elements ... 1. Very unique writing and editing. 2. More than a few great characters (give the police squad a chance). 3. Really despicable bad guys that you want to see pay for their crimes. On a related note, the violence is not graphic but very disturbing. 4. An interesting mythology parceled out with great timing. 5. A very beautiful Korean doctor to help neutralize the distaste of reading subtitles (actually more than a few beautiful Korean women).

OK but must really suspend disbelief to watch...
galaxychick23 July 2018
Warning: Spoilers
9-10 for acting/music -4 for holes/conveniences/inconsistencies

Entertaining. Well played. I laughed and cried watching this series, but...One must suspend one's disbelief really high to keep watching. Not just because it's a fantasy/supernatural thriller, but because of plot holes, inconsistencies, and conveniences that leaves one's head scratching. And the ending is the biggest head scratcher of all. It made me wonder what was the whole point

*Spoilers below**

Major plot holes/conveniences 1. Why didn't she see the shadow inside her dad the previous 444? 2. Why didn't she see the shadow inside Leo (revealed to be have been taken over since the beginning by 444's grim reaper fugitive partner)? 3. At first, I thought that not seeing the shadow inside Moo-Gang was a plot convenience. But when it was reveled that 444/Joon was inside the body of his brother which had part of his original body, his heart (hence why he couldn't get out of the body) could perhaps explain why no shadow was visible.

Plot inconsistencies 444 allegedly erased from existence coming back to pick up her soul after she lived a long alternate life, and then she suddenly remembers him? That's contradicting their own plot. This connection supposedly NEVER happened. No suspension of disbelief can give that ending any sense.

These flaws aside, still enjoyed most of it.

Great show, shame about the ending
willicatgirl11 March 2020
Warning: Spoilers
This is my 5th KDrama & the best so far. The plot is detailed & not always predictable, the main actor is amazing, the scene where he finally spends time with his real mother had me in tears. However the ending is terrible, without giving too much away they should have ended it where the camera pans over the photos & achievements of Ha-Ram's life. Instead they added afterwards an incredibly cheesy tacky ending that was no way in keeping with the rest of the show. It really looked like someone had forced the makers to add it onto the end against their better judgement. Shame.

Sad, heartbreaking but very interesting
hanalisss5 June 2021
This drama is very good but way too long and with way too many unnecessary turns. At times I was watching and thinking when is this going to end?!? The drama though , is very well executed and it has zero clichés, not your typical k drama at all. If it was shorter and if it was wrapped up quicker and in a more direct way it would have been perfect!

Although very sad and with a bittersweet ending, I think is worth the watch.

tlykkenielsen12 May 2018
I have only watched the first two episodes, but already now this seems like the most interesting show since Twin Peaks - The return. A mezmerising mixture of slapstick comedy, horror, fantasy, love story and thriller noir. This is what TV is supposed to be.

Good Enough
PennyReviews12 February 2018
Black makes use of many genres. Fantasy, with the popular for 2017 grim repear theme, crime, another 2017 popular theme for the k drama, romance, dark, mystery and comedy. The story itself is interesting and the atmosphere is good enough to create that dark twisted feeling. However, there were some things that just didn't work for me. First, the humour was so so and kind of odd in this story. Secondly, the ending. Actually, this one ruined the whole series for me. It was kind of cheesy and not well made at all. So, 6 out of 10.

skyescape-564-6833028 November 2020
Warning: Spoilers
The ending is so funny I have no words! I didn't see any logic at the very end, even for the fantasy genre. Where did the bracelet come from when the main male character ceased to exist in space and time, ie it never existed ... And how does he reappear at the very end when he has already disappeared ?? The person who wrote the script must have been on some drugs
