Rape is such an ugly word
nogodnomasters4 August 2019
Warning: Spoilers
Henry Lewis Blake (Benedict Samuel) picks up women for his less attractive roommate (Robin Goldsworthy). He picks up a Sarah (Ella Scott Lynch) who has mental issues and an imaginary alter-ego who eggs her on to be more daring. The evening did not go as planned for either one as it develops into a dark comedy where two people who distrust each other are forced to come together to cover up their misdeeds.

It was a short film that was well done, although it lacked the one or two over-the-top scenes to carry the film to cult status. It does have a "Lynch" in it.

Guide: F-word. sex. nudity (Ella Scott Lynch).

Builds up your hopes...then dashes them
grantss19 March 2020
Two housemates, Lewis and Kenneth, befriend a young woman, Sarah. Their motives are selfish and malevolent but seemingly-fragile Sarah might just have a surprise or two in store for them.

I had low expectations before watching this but was impressed initially and with the plot development. Some interesting, unexpected turns of events, gritty violence, a tight plot and dark atmosphere made for reasonably compelling watching.

Unfortunately, however, writer-director David Barker could not sustain the quality throughout (despite the short running time) and things fizzle out towards the end. A great pity as it promised so much at one stage. Ultimately it is quite disappointing.

I thought it would be worse.

Why they call it Pimped I have no clue, they could have called it anything else it wouldn't matter. Seeing the low ratings it got here I wasn't expecting too much of it. The beginning is a bit slow and you wonder what it's all about but the second part makes up for it so to me it's worth a watch. Don't expect award winning acting but it's certainly not bad either, far from that. To me it's worth a six star rating as a seven star rating is a good movie, not exceptional but that I would watch again. A six star rating is good but only for one viewing. Pimped is easy entertainment, nothing too difficult.

Get Pimped!
WalkdenEntertainment8 March 2019
Sarah (Ella Scott Lynch) is a young woman who is clearly dealing with personal issues and fighting with her own demons. While battling with her thoughts, she decides to get dressed and head out to her local bar where she meets a young handsome man, Lewis (Benedict Samuel). The two have a few drinks and get along nicely but little does Sarah know there is a bigger threat planned for her evening and her new lover may not be what he appears. Sarah is now trapped, with terrible consequences which she must face throughout the long night.

It should be noted that Pimped is an Australian film which has been delivered by director David Barker. This is also David's first directorial feature film.

Pimped is a film that relies on a small, strong cast and also a small location. To the director's credit, I personally enjoyed the overall look and style of this film (particularly the film's use of lighting), all of which I found to be incredibly creative and fun on screen. The film is mostly set within a home that looks old and also feels completely uncomfortable which naturally helps with creating suspense. Our Australian cast members (who honestly I was was a little unfamiliar with) also delivered great performances (in particular the actress Ella Scott Lynch) and I left the film feeling impressed with how suspenseful the film's tone actually is.

As one might expect, our film does contain twists and there are some turns. However, I feel the viewer's understanding of these twists or major plot points will in fact vary from viewer to viewer as some things are never clearly explained. I personally felt that I understood certain elements but sadly there are moments where I feel it would be very easy for an audience member to possibly think the wrong way. One could see a twist or plot point as something less or something more than what it was actually intended to be. It's a huge disappointment, considering all other factors are done well- kind of a glass is half empty or full situation. What you see and take away from the film could differ to what our director has intended (just my opinion).

As for the film's duration, Pimped is a rather quick film and I generally enjoyed the film's pacing, but sadly I did feel a slow burn at the start and once again right near the end of the film (more so towards the film's final ending prior to the credits). Once the film gets going, there is a fun experience that can be had, but it's mostly found within the centre of the film.

Overall Pimped delivers some stunning visuals and sets up a great world, particularly through the sets that we see for a good portion of the film. Our actors deliver good performances, but the sadly the film's major plot points or twists are told without any real confirmation and understanding revealed to he audience. Selected moments, particularly in the opening and closing of this film, can also feel like a slow burn. Nevertheless, for a directional debut by David Barker this is a proud achievement and I personally look forward to David's next upcoming film.

who's pimpin who????
ops-525356 February 2019
How different and challenging life can be, for women and for men , in sickness and in health. this is a psychological horror thriller, that starts off very slow burning, so you sit there flipping coins, shall i leave it or not.... because it is in the second half it really takes off to become mental and quite nasty. there are psychopathia, quite a few actually, but can you guess who???

it is a film with few location, quite spartanic equipted apartments and houses, the story must have been written on a paper napkin, and the sound product is a mess. there are a few murders, and they come fast an abrupt prescice and very bloody. there are also a very strong alter ego, that really plays an important part in the plot. so when the pimp gets pimped by the pimp who is then the pimp.

its a bit slow, but it is watchable and fine for those who likes it a bit burlesque, a small recommendation from the grumpy old man

One of the dullest and least eventful films I've seen
jimbo-53-18651114 December 2019
Two housemates decide to lure a woman into their home as part of a sick 'sex trap' game. The tables quickly turn on the lads though when they select Sarah Montrose (Ella Scott Lynch) a mentally unstable lady who takes exception to the lads sick game with murderous consequences...

With its insufferable, wretched and pompous dialogue through to its threadbare character studying and analysis of those with mental health issues Pimped becomes the sort of film you end up enduring more than anything else. Practically nothing happens for the first half of the film so if you do insist on watching it, but have things to do as well then utilise that time in the first half of the film as I guarantee you will miss nothing. Even when it does gain some momentum in the second half it's still pretty unremarkable and lacking in any kind of suspense; character deaths are particularly poorly orchestrated with laughably bad acting (honestly you have to see it to believe it).

With Sarah having mental health issues Pimped really could have been an excellent film had it delved a bit more in to Sarah's emotional psyche, but it never really does this in a particularly interesting or informative way. Compared to a film like Fight Club which used a similar idea this is laughable by comparison, but it does show that a film revolving its ideas around mental health can work when given the right treatment.

Looking at him on IMDB, Director David Barker is clearly inexperienced in this respective role and given what he's done with this film he should perhaps start looking at an alternative career as I cannot imagine him being the next Steven Spielberg or Martin Scorsese. The actors don't help the picture much and some of the acting is so bad that it's actually funny (as I said the death scenes are a personal favourite for sheer ineptness).

Pimped is a wretched film and even though it's only around 80 minutes in length for me that was still 80 minutes too long.

In your head
kosmasp17 August 2022
And some other places of your body of course. But puns and innuendos aside, this has a female character in the front seat that is quite twisted (another pun I know). That being said, the movie is low budget and you have to suspend your disbelief as much as possible.

I understand if you have issues with the shortcomings and fallings of the movie. Not everything gels perfectly ... but these rough edges are also what make the movie enticing and interesting to a degree. No real person to root for - but we do not always need that. Just be aware that you should leave your moral compass on the side ... and just accept the movie for what it is.

Not very well written
becky-9234630 December 2019
Warning: Spoilers
Some of the cinematography and lighting was interesting and attractive to look at, the acting was fairly decent but realistically that's all I can say good about it. Sarah's psychopathy and delusions are never really explained, they just exist and we are never given a reason as to why she is like this. The movie is too short for us to get interested in the characters and it was predictable. The ending was anticlimactic and overall it was quite forgettable

A bon-bon spiked with ground glass
AnnieKinnane25 March 2019
"A stylish subversive treat, a bon-bon spiked with ground glass..." - FilmInk "Utterly, creepily convincing" - The Australian "Slick ripper...thriller" - Jim Schembri 3AW

This film is not for everyone. It's a highly stylised genre piece, which asks the audience to think more ... to consider what if? Who can you really trust, who do you really know? Fans of "You" will enjoy the psycho thriller aspect, fans of "Gotham" will enjoy seeing Benedict Samuel (Mad Hatter) wrecking havoc. Read the critic reviews - they get the themes and discuss in an intriguing manner.

Didn't want it to end
jasonpauljones-6469018 June 2023
It's not often I wish a movie wouldn't end but that's exactly how I felt at the rather abrupt conclusion to Pimped. Which is funny because the opening 20 minutes didn't pull me in at all, but then out of the blue this movie revs up and keeps motoring on pleasingly and Ella Scott Lynch is the main reason for this, her character Sarah displaying all the hallmarks of being a mentally disturbed, dangerous young lady. The execution in this is amazingly effective and I wanted to see more but it ends after 75 minutes which was disappointing because we don't know how things pan out for Sarah.

It's a rape revenge type of thriller that spins off in an unexpected direction and had me wondering what would happen next. Clever movie making, excellent direction and some funny bits mixed in, makes for a titillating viewing experience that I really didn't want to end. That and the first 20 knocks it back so I'll settle for a respectable rating of 6 stars.

We're Supposed To
bemyfriend-4018417 March 2021
Fair writing. Grisly, with some mild humor. Lots of muscles on the heroine; who is the typical 21st century "strong" female etc. I suppose we should believe that rapists deserve death. At least we're supposed to.

Mediocre thriller
olcayozfirat2 March 2022
Warning: Spoilers
2018 Australian made mediocre thriller.

A schizophrenic woman and a man who would kill for wealth meet at a bar. The man is actually pimping a rich man. He seduces the woman himself and offers it to the man. After that, things don't go as planned.

Cheap acting, simple script. Everything is clear from the beginning. There is a love scene.

--- spoilers ---

Kenneth's parents can't ask, what are you doing in this house?

Delicious Slow Burn with Several Unpredictable Payoffs
halcyoneight21 May 2019
Personally I love a psychological horror flick that doesn't give the game away right at the outset. Pimped managed to create loads of intrigue earlier on and had enough twists to keep me guessing throughout. Beautifully shot and very well cast. Loved it. Definitely worth seeing this film.

Using cinematography, design and sound to create an immersive, visceral experience.
goldensamurai21 March 2019
Worth seeing; this film features a talented first time director and a great cast.

My only criticism would be that I wished it was longer!

Great Psychological Thriller
streeted-5097216 March 2019
Pimped is tightly scripted thriller, surprising me with it's themes. I wasn't expecting a genre film that dealt with issues of identity, while also building to a climatic end based around the abuse of a woman. Ella Scott Lynch is remarkable in her roles, so too Benedict Samuel. I saw this in the cinema in Sydney and it has stayed with me since. Beautifully shot with a soundtrack that was intense and minimal at the same time. This really moved me on a number of levels.

Laugh out loud and then you gasp!
mannemoore17 May 2019
Is is a fantastic movie, where one minute you gasp in shock and wonder what will happen next. Then you laugh out loud because of the subtle and dark humour well distributed throughout. The movie will play on your mind for days, and you will be asking yourself many questions and ponder about who is the psychopath. Just brilliant!

Terrific film was unexpected but very enjoyable
mfoxartist23 September 2023
A lot of the negative reviews here just completely miss the mark; they're either unable to interpret what is happening in this film or just incapable of recognizing a solid movie. Pimped isn't flawless but it's a solid film that delivers an intriguing plot, two nicely twisted main characters, and fairly realistic circumstances.

Why it's called Pimped I'll never know. It has nothing to do with pimping or prostitution. Others have summed up the storyline pretty well and you can see it's a dramatic thriller about a woman getting revenge for a rape...and much more.

I will agree that it doesn't have the truly fantastic scenes that put you on the edge of your seat, but as a low-wattage drama it has plenty of interesting turns, peaks and valleys. The acting, direction and production values were all top notch. And unlike some others--even some who still liked the movie--I really liked the ending!
