Definitely fit for cinema release
ron-newbold9 September 2018
Set and filmed entirely in Adelaide and its surrounds, this film offers many moments of recognition for anyone who lives in or has lived in South Australia. Not a particularly memorable film but not cringingly awful either. Direction and acting are competent enough and there is a human story here that is told with a certain wry humour but with few LOL moments. (A fake boomerang that turns out to be anything but is one, and Henry's girlfriend Sophie is a hoot.) Can' t agree with the newspaper critic who thought the film should only have lasted 50-60 minutes and that it was padded with unnecessary scenes. The bowling alley scene, for example, was part of things going ever more pear-shaped for a financially stressed Ronnie, and the Q and A scene brought out what a poseur and phoney Henry was.

Good shots of Australian scenery
rory-6283811 March 2024
I saw this when screened on TV, so it didn't cost me anything to view it. Low budget. Independent style film (when you think about Top Gun: Maverick, $170 million USD, 1000 people involved, one article states 2820 side jobs) with some nice shots of Australian scenery, the actors are decent at their craft (keeping in mind they aren't there for the viewers they attract with the dollar signs on the cheques pasted on their heads {HOLLYWOOD]). It was an interesting story although not utilised as well as it could be. I didn't feel like it was a waste of my time, enjoyed it, but, I am Australian and perhaps some nuances of it would be lost on those that aren't say British, Australian, New Zealand, perhaps Canada and South African. I also write that in acknowledging that it's nice to see an Australian movie, not enough are made, and it's a refreshing alternative to the cultural invasion of big budget, low effort, low intelligent tripe that we get from Hollywood/USA in every format - cinema, television, music, literature.

Absolutely not funny
Jon-hark-brown-113830 August 2018
I dont understand how this film is fit for cinema release? It is the most unfunny comedy I have seen recently. Not to mention zero chemistry with the cast, appalling cinematography and no sound design at all. Basically everything you would want to go to the cinema for. why oh why?!

Not too bad
pub-215 January 2021
For a low budget film, kudos to all involved with this film. If you're an Aussie film fan it's a must watch, if you think a good film is a Hollywood block buster give it a miss. Much talent accompanied with some good Aussie humour.

Simply awful

What a waste of everyone's time. This film is so bad, it defies description.

The acting is bad, bad, bad, especially from Henry's girlfriend Sophie. Have you ever heard a French person speaking English as a second language?

No trace of a French accent at all.

Henry just looked too old to be a hot movie star.

The part about Veronica's boyfriend writing a book where a spider falls in love with a woman was so ridiculous and then Henry suggests changing the spider's role to a man and that is somehow "interesting". Henry who hadn't even read the book, decides to make it into a movie. Seriously?

The obligatory kangaroo shows up of course, plus a boomerang just in case you didn't realise it's an Australian film and then to top if all off, a kangaroo "aggresses" one of the characters.

If you value your time, don't waste it on this piece of garbage which was nothing but a waste of colour film.

Not funny, poor story, poor acting. Pure junk tv. Booring beyond belief. Watched as far as could handle the high school level production.

A warm, charming, fun experience
adelehann6 September 2018
I chuckled all the way through this film and enjoyed spending time with the characters. It looks great and it's a buzz seeing the South Australian locations looking so fresh. I think this will appeal to women more than men and I wonder if some of the negative reviews were by men as the film skewers male foibles and vanities rather nicely. On reflection I'd say it's a sort of comedy of manners for suburban Australia.

Love this film!
english_rose-15 September 2018
I was pleasantly surprised by this film. After reading such poor reviews, I didn't expect much, but found it to be rather good. The awkwardness between the players I judged to be the natural state of two couples pushed together, who don't know each other. Not to mention the natural trepidation on Ronnie's part, of being forced to be nice to someone who broke her heart. Izzard maybe could have made a little bit more of an effort - you're not that good looking Eddie. You really need to try and act a bit too! Go and see this and make up your own mind. The Southern Australian backdrop makes a pleasant change from the usual locations used in movies, and the plot line is unusually refreshing. I found myself having no idea how it would all turn out, but the ending was lovely.

Really Enjoyed it.

I really enjoy this movie. I've alway thought Emily Taheny is great - ever since I saw her performance in "It's A Date" playing Ronny Ching's love interest. I am so happy finally see her in a film as a leading lady. Go Emily Then!!!

Smart indie comedy
mljlondon29 December 2018
Seems this film has been overlooked. It's not a traditional romcom, its much smarter than that. Emily Taheny is a conflicted woman who falls into the trap of thinking that a new partner,in this case an ex from years ago, is the solution to all had problems. It ain't. Sly, witty, funny and moving this is an atypical Australian comedy. Surprising and worth seeing.

Great Aussie made film

I saw this as part of the oz film festival in London. What a lovely film. Well made, great direction, good script and acting was spot on. Made me homesick for Adelaide.

Loved it
imurf6 June 2019
I can see why the cinema elite don't like this movie, it's a bit too 'down to earth' for their tastes. And they probably realise it's poking fun at them. We loved it. It's different, funny, honest, set in Adelaide. The best line is from the mechanic, his opinion of what's wrong with Jeff's car.

A fun romp around Adelaide.... with Eddie Izzard!!!!
thejdrage9 October 2022
A fun romp around Adelaide.... with Eddie Izzard!!!! In men's clothes, no less.

This is a fun film about people with problems and how they handle them - incorrectly. And how they handle relationships badly. You know, just like us!

I don't understand the slam reviews. This is a film worth watching for the lightness of it all.

Plus - who can say no to an Eddie Izzard movie? And a hint of Tina Bursill, too, who plays a brilliant mom.

There is a lot of travelling around the Australian countryside and in Adelaide itself that is beautiful.

Is it perfect ? Nope. Is it worth a watch? Absolutely. Just sit back and enjoy all the flaws - and compare them to your own.
