Better Than Justice League...
scythertitus11 December 2019
And there is barely any Justice League in it. Honestly if they had left the resurrection of Superman for its own movie it would have worked a lot better. Here the opposite is true, combining both the death and return into one long movie works a lot better.

I honestly can't imagine the Death part working on its own, barely anything happens before the end besides drama that we have already seen the conclusion to a hundred times, and the second part on its own would surely be far too convoluted. So we'll done to DC for making this narrative into one part. It just makes sense.

Overall this arc is a complete film, although they probably could have shaved down some of the conversations, especially with Lois Lane, who seems to be there to pad out both separate movies, but most of her stuff doesn't need to be here when combined. Good story, drags a bit.

Unfortunately, it does not live up to its prequel
kmchahine18 March 2019
Warning: Spoilers
This review was written on Jan. 12, 2019. *****

"The Death of Superman" that aired several months ago was a masterpiece to its genre. The threat of Doomsday in that storyline and his destructive character and actions made the movie a truly realistic way of ending the Man of steel. The chemistry between Clark and Lois in that film along with the dilemmas and pain depicted were truly well felt by any spectator which rendered the entire script a perfection. With its after-credits hinting to the reign of the supermen, no doubt anyone was to be excited as the "Death of Superman" set the bar high up for a sequel.

After watching "Reign of the Supermen" minutes ago, I am disappointed. I really wanted to like this movie, but the feelings of having the story run too quickly and too suddenly with minimal character development make the movie not as grandiose as its prequel.

The DCAU is a beautiful universe that hitherto has been well depicted and maintained. My issues with this movie is that it annuls the tragedy of the previous movie in too much of a fast pace that it becomes unrealistic and too unsatisfying.

***spoilers ahead***

To make my concerns more concrete, I will list them here:

The way the movie started was nicely done. The tragedy that had befallen Lois and the Kent family was there and you experience it with them. Nonetheless, less than two minutes later, all of this is gone and you're left to feel that the tragedy is long forgotten - though the story revolves around it.

The Justice League were easily taken out of the picture in a completely simple way. Too simple in fact. Such a move made their entire "power" simply ridiculous. Darkseid can simply do this move again and again, next time Superman included.

The new empowered humans were also ridiculous, very generic and unappealing. Mind control as such must be a piece of cake to any person in the future and a quick endgame. An alternative could have probably been thought of.

Lois was very empowered. In fact, more than she could be as a human. Her wits were satisfying, but it felt like the limitations of her humanity were ignored for the sake of generating action sequences, especially in the end scenes.

Finally, Lex's intentions remain unknown. This is not necessary a bad move as Lex is one of the most fascinating persons. The sequel might reveal some insights into his plans.

Now the way I picture this universe as I have imagined it after the "Death of Superman", is that it should follow the Injustice storyline. If they play it right and slow and evolve Clark's relationship with Lois, that storyline is inevitable and something that no doubt will be worth the watch. They have to work on the Batman/Superman bromance first though.

*****end of spoilers*****

In summary, although I did not hate this movie, I was actually hoping for a more rigid storyline. It seemed rushed with significantly less boldness and feelings than its prequel, "the Death of Superman". In short, superman's death seemed more grandiose than his resurrection.

Far better than expected

Not the best DC animated movie but it's entertaining that's for sure. Great action and good enough story line. However the use of the justice League was woeful and there wasn't much character depth. But at least for once Lois Lane is actually interesting!

Just like The Death of Superman, one for the middle pack of DC animated movies
diego_slx3 February 2019
Same as with Death of Superman this isn't one to remember. They are not bad like Batman and Harley Quinn, but they are a step back from the quality DC has us used to. I would not recommend this movie or it's predecessor to anyone that isn't a fanboy and I will probably not remember them after a while.

After a great "Death of Superman"... this is disappointing
HassantakeR23 January 2019
I am a huge DC fan but I prefer to watch Young Justice over this. It is boring and we know everything that is going to happen. Darkseid is not scary AT ALL. They destroyed his character. The writing is lazy...

Do yourself a favour and watch Young Justice instead.

Feels incomplete

Warning: Spoilers
Movie feels very incomplete, The justice league is hardly in it, Superboy seemed to have daddy issues and gets very old. Superman comes back to life and feels very non surprising. Love it but has problems.

Dumb sequel to the Death of Superman.
allkillahnofillah9 March 2019
I came with high expectations from the Death of Superman, feeling an extra bit of disappointment.

So many character not fleshed out.

Justice League are just prop in this film, might just take them out entirely.

Superman out of character
Reckat15 January 2019
Warning: Spoilers
The movie was nice overall, good follow up on the Death of Superman. Lots of good reviews for the voice acting, the directing and the plot, and I share those opinions. But really grinds my gear is the absolute out of character acting Superman at the end. He KILLED Cyborg-Superman. Yes, he says he's not "programmed" that way, but he was fully aware of what ramming the crystal into Cyborg-Supermans head will do. That's like a muderer with a gun saying "I didn't kill the man, the gun did!" Superman ALWAYS finds another way instead of killing. Except for Man of Steel, which was shunned by Supes fans exactly because of killing Zod. So WTF???

Best DC Animated Film Yet

I was really impressed by this. I really enjoyed it. Why can't they get the people who storyboard these films to story board the live action movies?

Had a potential but...
sacred-24-19600816 January 2019
I've been waiting for this since The Death of Superman, but this is not that l excited about. It has so many pointless jokes which kill the serious story. l mean every scene except fighting has a joke tagged along. There were moments that l thought l was watching Marvel movie. There are too much humor in it! And the movie wasn't even delivered good boss fight, the final boss had a poor unrealistic motivation. But it is still enjoyable to watch.

Perfect Companion Piece to Death
stevendbeard14 January 2019
Warning: Spoilers
I saw "Reign of the Supermen", starring the voices of Jerry O'Connell-Scary Movie 5, Piranha 3D; Rebecca Romijn-The Librarians_tv, The Punisher_2004; Cress Williams-Black Lightning_tv, Code Black_tv and Rainn Wilson-The Meg, My Super Ex_Girlfriend. This is an animated sequel to 'The Death of Superman' from 2018 and Reign will be released in stores on January 29th 2019. There was a double feature in theaters-Reign & Death-promoting the video launch, so I saw both of them together. Just to refresh your memory, Jerry/Clark Kent/Superman was killed fighting Doomsday in the previous movie-Doomsday died too-and then Superman's body went missing. About 6 months later, Rebecca/Lois Lane is still grieving when 4 individuals show up claiming to be Superman. Cress/John Henry Irons/Steel is one of the 4. Rainn/Lex Luthor is still running his schemes in the background, trying to convince people that he is a hero, instead of that alien from Krypton that everyone worships. Which one of the 4-if any of them-is the real Man of Steel? What is their connections and secrets? If you have read the original comics, then you know. There are some pretty good fight scenes-as there were in the previous Death-and a few surprises, too. It's a perfect companion piece to the 'Death of Superman' so if you enjoyed Death, then you should like Reign as well. It's rated "PG-13" for action violence and bloody images and has a running time of 1 hour & 27 minutes. I enjoyed it and would buy it on Blu-Ray.

Interesting Take on the Story
holeeray16 January 2019
I was a huge fan of the original storyline when it was printed in comics and was wondering how they were going to fit all the storylines into a 1.5 hour movie. They did a decent job of streamlining everything by changing around some key elements. Part of me wishes they had stuck to the original story, but part of me is glad they did something different to keep it fresh. The story is still fairly engaging and there were a couple twists I wasn't expecting. The voice acting is pretty good (besides John Henry's voice should have had a bit more bass to it imo since in the comics they described him as having more of a James Earl Jones type of voice) and the animation is above average, with spots of low effort in certain scenes.

Overall, I'd recommend it to anyone who's a fan of the DC universe.

A let down after the superior first movie
spmact24 January 2019
I enjoyed Death of Superman. It was well done, the villain was something to be feared (unlike this one), there was weight to what happened and it even had emotional moments.

This movie was a mess. Too many elements being thrown in, motivations that don't make sense, plot twists/reveals that don't make sense, plot holes regarding the existence of the replacement Supermen (if they're around why do we need the original? Just make more of them), too many instances where the good guys should have lost, and basically treats the audience like it's dumb. I could go on but I won't.

It wasn't terrible, but not good either. Do yourself a favour and watch Doomsday instead. That one was done better and wasn't half baked. This one felt like they ran out of creativity after the first and were forced to keep the story going, so they came up with a bunch of ideas that weren't well thought out.

Reign of the Lesser Supermen
koltonbrett6 January 2022
With Superman gone, four new Supermen show up to take his place. The most intriguing aspect of this movie is the mystery behind the Supermen. Who are they and where did they come from? Each one has a different origin story. It's hard to imagine the follow up to The Death of Supermen being as good as that movie. And this one was indeed not as good, though still a really solid entry in this New 52 line of DC animated movies. The emotional impact of Superman's return did not pack the same punch as his death. It didn't get quite as much build up. Superboy is a fun addition to this DC universe. I give 7.5, right between good and great.

It's... okay.
Java_Joe23 May 2019
I remember the whole "Death of Superman" thing back in the 90's. They introduced four new possible Supermen under four different titles like "The Man of Steel" and "The Last Son of Krypton". All of which continue to this day in one form or another but none of them call themselves Superman anymore. So it's a given that DC would put out a video of this although I would have expected it to come shortly after the actual cartoon they made of the whole affair years ago.

Of course, like anything, this takes liberties with the story. For example Superboy was made by Lex Luthor instead of Cadmus and seems to be able to fly, something he couldn't do in the comics. But I get it. It's an adaptation and not meant to be the same story.

This movie involves the other members of the Justice League who obviously play a larger role in the whole thing. And on the whole it's okay. It's not a great story. It feels a little disjointed at times trying to cram all of the Supermen to one degree or another. The animation is good as is the voice acting. But in the end it just feels a little hollow. It's missing heart or something that makes us want to cheer for these characters.

Not the worst thing that DC has put out but it's definitely not their best work.

Good continuation of the current animated continuity but...
pparker12345678915 January 2019
The story from the comics and the novelation of the Reign of the Supermen was far superior. I had some problems with some of the elements. I was a little disappointed. I would wait until this is available on one of the streaming services you already subscribe and not pay the extra 19.99 I don't think it is worth it.

A solid 7/10 with good reason
Odintodd11 February 2019
Warning: Spoilers
Warner Bros. Continues to pump out the animated movies so fast, they have are releasing them, including 'Reign of the Supermen', with poor graphics/animation, and poor story line.

Spoiler alert

Lois Lane takes on the primary role in this movie, and her relationships with other characters promotes poor story arc, and the dialogue is the product of bad writing, or, writers.

Some scenes are drawn in a way that resembles anime, and delivers on my previous statement that the movie is of poor quality animation.

Don't get the hate but it's nothing great
crazelord24 February 2022
Except for the latter half of the previous film which was fantastic and the best part of this story, I general this is a much better written and engaging film. The death of superman was very mediocre until the fights with Doomsday (which were amazing), but this is engaging and intriguing all the way through.

With some great action scenes as well showing the immense power these new supermen have. I do wish there was more time to flesh out the story as events and characters are thrown at you in rapid fire succession.

But while the original comics did spend time building the story, this isn't a convoluted mess of editorial gimmicks like that. It continues the story and gives a lot of autonomy to the axillary characters of the superman lore.

The reason it's just a 6 is that it's nothing special. A bit later and I don't remember much from it.

Warning: Spoilers
First of all I havent read the comics. It was so fast moving that it didnt make any suspense. I didnt like watching lois lane being protagonist. No justice league at all. You have luthor being the funny guy? really?? Whats up with the other heroes being wasted, a line or two for the JL members?? I was wating so badly for the upcoming animated movies and at the end I was let down. The good things are that the movie had nice fighting scenes and a lot of action. The animations were good too. I really wish that they should take their time and make better things. There is no need to be following the trends and memes of the internet just to make it more approachable, accually DO NOT DO IT. It makes the movie boring, I didnt want to see a comedy or JL memebers being left at the side. And for gods sake stop making 7/10 movies for superman. Try making something special for the other characters, make suspense and take the time to get a nice story to base the movie on.

Better than the live version
davidm-0885023 September 2020
Warning: Spoilers
The first half is better than the second death of Superman is much truer to it's source material than reign of the Supermen is. Spends too much time on Clark and Lois's relationship. I get it trying to establish their characters for casual fans but fans who know and love the source material will be slightly disappointed. Huge props to Rain Wilson who is perfect as Lex Luthor. Which is a huge departure from the source. Luthor is part of the story but it's Luthor Jr. Doomsday looks like he's supposed unlike the live action where he looks like a cave troll lord of the rings ripoff and there are logic errors. Reign of the Supermen is a huge departure from the source material namely Darkseid is the main antagonist which yes Henshaw does eventually run into him in the books but not in reign of the Supermen the visor Superman is vastly different each of these could have easily been 2 - 2 1/2 hours each but alas that's not what DC did here. Overall though enjoyable and yes much better than both Batman vs. Superman and Justice League
