Deserves a wide release
claudecat8 January 2019
I don't understand why this film hasn't had a wider release--it hardly has any reviews here, and doesn't seem to be available on DVD or streaming. I saw it at a film festival, and it was the stand-out picture of the series. From a brief description--maid and employer find themselves attracted to each other--I assumed the story would be full of clichés, but the movie breaks them all, and never went where I was expecting. The acting is completely believable, and I was fascinated by the brief but illuminating glimpses of the social system in India, and the relationships between the employer class and the servant class. I would recommend this film to anyone who appreciates thoughtful, insightful stories.

8.5 / One of those films that gives your tears of joy.
adityakripalani22 August 2018
At each point in the film, you feel society as a transparent, near invisible force between the two characters. THe way spatial distance has been used, dealt with, mirroring society's classification of people, is gorgeous. The performances of both Tillotama Shome and vivek Gomber are fab. Great casting here. From the moment the real collision happens and a spatial barrier of sorts is severed is where the mettle of the writer and so also the film is tested. And it's actually from this moment that the film soars way beyond what one had expected. It coolly and deftly averts every cliche and possible corniness that a story like this could have moved into and instead surprises you with such a rise that few films are able to. Gorgeous debut. Tough to believe it's her first film. Tillotama and Vivek stayed with me as their characters way after the film was over. Congratulations Rohena.

"Life is never over, Sir"
Peter_Young30 April 2021
Sir is one of the most beautiful and breathtaking films I've seen off late. It is a quiet, optimistic and profound account of the relationship between Aashwin, a recently separated young and welathy man from Mumbai, and Ratna, his live-in housemaid. The film is mostly set within Aashwin's luxurious apartment, and their personal stories are kept most of the time pretty much in the background, as we follow their bond. We soon learn of the problems both of them are facing. He has recently called off his marriage with his adulterous girlfriend whom he never loved, his brother has died, and he gives up a better future in New York to help with the family business. She comes from a very primitive village down south, supports her family financially and pays for her sister's education; she was once married in her teens and widowed after several months. This job is a dream job for her as it pays well and provides her with housing and a kind boss who always treats her well and never throws tantrums the kind of which some of her other maid friends have to bear with their employers. Aashwin, despite being terribly immersed in his current state, never takes it out on Ratna. She, on her end, leads an independent life and dreams of becoming a designer.

It's an interesting paradox (and maybe it's not a paradox at all) to see how Aashwin, supposedly the more privileged among the two, who has money and social status and a host of friends and relatives around him and always supporting him, finds more difficulty in struggling with his daily realities and can't find satisfaction (at least during the course of the film, which is a specific point in time, to be fair). Ratna, on the other hand, whose existence is much more challenging--a hard-working woman who has lost her husband and has nothing going for her really except for her simple, modest dreams--is totally optimistic, never gives up and always holds hope for a better day. If that is not enough, she fends for her family and for her younger sister's education, and has so much carried on her slim shoulders, and yet dreams of becoming a designer and improving her life. The concept of happiness as a state of exploring, fighting for something and walking towards a goal rather than merely achieving it, gets perfect meaning through her character. Ratna even manages to encourage and instill faith in Aashwin, briefly sharing with him her life story and teaching him the simplest lesson it has taught her, "life is never over", in one of the film's best scenes.

This is just the beginning of a change. The relationship between Aashwin and Ratna is beautifully portrayed and even more beautifully developed. It is real, believable and never feels artificial. Rohena Gera, the film's writer and director, does a great job on both accounts. The script is very carefully written, and the direction more than does justice to it. In the initial stages, their interactions are random and very matter of fact with not a single hint at a possible romantic spark, but there's a gradual growth of affection and affinity, which culminates in romantic and sexual tension, though not in the sleazy way. Much is said about Ratna, but Aashwin is a greatly endearing character. He is presented as a true gentleman throughout the story, who doesn't employ the perverted ways of people of his social strata. For him, Ratna is as equal as one of his distinguished guests on a night party, he treats her with utmost kindness and respect, and his worldly understanding that nothing makes one human better than another other than their personality and moral stand, is impressive.

Incredibly realistic, subtle and engaging, Sir addresses themes of social class, race, urban loneliness, and the fragility of human relationships. It offers a strong commentary on the distorted moral values of the so-called elite, and even more critically so on the regressive, condescending and prejudiced worldview among some educated members of the upper class, often masked under the guise of nothing but preachy nonsense. "You can't date your maid", says one of the characters in the film, and he's a good guy, so is it really his fault? Well, the film is less critical of the characters, it's critical of the social norms that dictate what is reckoned as good, bad, or just totally unacceptable. And our heroine herself does not believe she could ever have any sort of relationship with her employer. She is too afraid of what it might evoke and how her surroundings would react. The audience will find it very easy to connect with both Aaswin and Ratna's stories. More than anything, it's amazing how a film situated within this restricted setting for the most part, manages to be constantly fascinating and do so much with so little.

Without much further ado, I should pronounce right away the great magic of this film other than the terrific writing, and it is the extraordinary Tillotama Shome. Her Ratna is a true portrait of strength, power and resillience. Shome's gestures, dialogue delivery and overall presence in the role of a rustic housemaid is amazingly believable and always rings true. In Shome's interpretation, Ratna may lack some of the western sophistication that most people in her new setting seem to have, but her inner world is so much richer and not for a single moment does she lose her sense of dignity. The other half of this beautiful story is Vivek Gomber, around whose character the film is based (Sir is the form of address Ratna uses with him). He is not as good as Shome, and his English delivery is poor, but he is still quite competent as the kind and radiant Aashwin, often doing enough with his presence and successfully registering the growth in his character, his process of healing and gradual enamourment with Ratna. These two really make this film the gem that it is. Sir is an inspiring, profound, and deeply involving piece of storytelling. It is a moving human story which I'm sure many would relate to and hopefully learn from.

JFF Review: Sir (8 Stars)
nairtejas27 September 2019
Sir takes its time to unravel and when it does it is hard to not fall in love with it. Not with the characters per se or the actors who play them so magically you want to rush up to them and give a hug, but with the delightful, delicate way director Rohena Gera carves her feature film directorial debut about the invisible relationship between a maid (Tilotama Shome) hailing from a remote Maharashtra village and her employer (Vivek Gomber) who lives and works in the upper-class South Bombay. The subtlety of what unfolds in front of you is the charming factor of Sir, a film that aspires to restructure that relationship, especially the one that is often seen from an exploitative eye. With a swooning romantic layer that is effervescent in almost all scenes - majority of which are between the two lead - there are pleasure bulbs throughout the film like a tree with ripe fruits ready for you to pluck and enjoy albeit from a distance. I can only imagine the depth of writing that must have gone behind the making as there is hardly any scene that looks out of flow or essence with Gera pushing the story lightly letting her characters live and her viewers take it all in like the way you would slow-eat a piece of cake you love so much, giving it time. But the characters are not stereotypical here, especially the one played by Shome, who here has a dream and has been characterized as an idiosyncratic person, something that I feel is a true depiction of a character in a film that talks about class. What, perhaps more than the writing, works here are the performances. It is easy to say I don't see anyone else playing the role of the maid than Shome who has been pleasing ever since her Monsoon Wedding (2001) days but for Sir I mean it or someone who is more quaint and decent and soft-talker-like than Gomber, both of whom grace the screen, turn a wand, and spew magic. Even Geetanjali Kulkarni shines as the film refuses to budge in its attempt to convince your eye glands to fire a tear, a tear that's only the product of delight, pleasure, happiness, and hope all flowing like cool breeze on your face. Goosebumps are expected. The ambiguity is more than a fad here. To borrow a line from a fellow film lover at the film's premiere at Cinepolis, Mumbai, Sir the film sneaks up on you. TN.

(Watched and reviewed at its India premiere at the 10th Jagran Film Festival (JFF) in Mumbai.)

A slow-paced realitstic portrayel of attraction & understanding.
whackcar12 March 2020
The trailer will give you the wrong idea. The movie isn't emotional & intense as it implies. Instead it's a slow-paced drama that shows the slowly developing attraction between a maid & her lord. If you're the impatient type, then the pacing might bore you. The relationship develops very slowly & calmly. It is realistic & heartwarming though. By the end, you'll be satisfied viewing it.

Perfection Dipiction of "Loog Kia Kahengay" (What People Will Say)
Hussain-AL-Naseer6 July 2020
It is always good and relaxing to go back to the subtle, slow & calm movies when you are a reviewer and constantly indulge into fast paced Action, Thrillers, Adventures, Fantasies etc. Movies like Sir are not being made solely for commercial gains but the idea is to depict realities in a beautifully articulated art form. Sir is simple and calm with runtime of 1hour 39mins no loudness or high tension scenes which is indeed the USP of the movie. Film showcases how strong a woman can be despite of everything going against her, breaking the stereotypes of being a weaker gender Women's are actually the opposites they are always ready to challenge the circumstances, fighting against the odds and ready to sacrifice whole a lot just for the sake of society, acting mature. On the other hand, film has also showed that what Men's actually want from a women and that is just being cared, someone who understand them and being there for them in their downs all the other things like beauty, status etc. are the secondary things. Both the leads Tillotama Shome & Vivek Gomber were in the charatcers throughout, they were natural neither less nor extra they just nailed it beautifully. Both the story & narration by Rohena Gera are simple yet engaging. Don't go for this movie if you like fast paced, commercial films because you wont gonna find anything in this and you might get bored .

A sweet story between a village girl and a city boy
andreeutza_yooo29 August 2019
Warning: Spoilers
This movie shows the rift between rich/poor and people from the village/city. As the two protagonists grow closer, the rift stands between them and complicates things for them. The girl is portraying the traditional girl who comes to the city and dreams about living an independent life and having a career. While the man is caught between the expectancy of his parents and feelings that he did not experienced before. The movie is a bit repetitive as it shows a lot of the routine of the maid and I can say that the emotion comes in the second half of the movie. I really liked the fact that the movie is called "Sir" which is a noun meant to keep people at distance and things as objective as possible. But even with this appellative, things do not remain impersonal. This story may as well be the story of every village girl and every city man. And so I must believe that this was the exact reason of the movie, to illustrate the prejudices that in the country of India are still so important. I think that this movie shows this prejudices in a very censored version may I say, but not any less grave. No matter the downsides, the movie still shows a very sweet and innocent love between the two of them. I really enjoyed the fact that after they both made the step in the right direction of their hopes and dreams, they reconnected. Though the end was a very subtle one, just hinting at their reconciliation, I believe that it was a very suitable ending.

#SIRTheFilm is a beautiful love story between two people who r like chalk n cheese. Boy is rich, US returned n sophisticated. Girl is poor n works as his live-in maid. She understands him completely n serves him unflinchingly. When they do fall in love, they realize its not going to be easy. How dare an affluent guy date his maid? Performances r excellent. Direction is competent. The short running time is a plus point. Do watch it. Rating 3.5/5.

"If you really like her....just let her be"
planktonrules24 August 2021
"Sir" is a film unlike any other Indian film I have seen. While not all Indian films feature singing and dancing, not having it is unusual. But what's really different is that the story involves ordinary people...people who don't look like Bollywood stars. And, the story is interesting because it's rather mundane compared to most of the Indian films we get in the USA....and I mean this as a compliment.

The story is a very leisurely paced tale about a maid who works for a man in Mumbai. She is a widow and is an excellent maid, but Ratna (Tillotama Shome) is plain and from a lower socioeconomic group than the man she works for, Ash (Vivek Gomber). Ash has recently gone through a painful breakup with his fiancee, as she cheated on him and over time it becomes apparent to Ash that the only woman he truly trusts is Ratna...and over time he comes to love her. But such a relationship cannot be in India....and would be tough anywhere. And, more importantly, Ratna cannot allow this as she knows the predicament it would place them both in...and her feelings simply aren't a deciding factor.

This film is a nice bit of insight into real people and real problems in India. While I love more traditional Indian films, I enjoyed this because unlike the usual Bollywood offering, this one seems to have a bit more depth and was about real people...which I really appreciate. Well made and interesting....and available streaming through Netflix here in the States.

A Must See just because mainstream romance oriented bollywood industry trying an unconventional Love-Story.
SAMTHEBESTEST3 November 2020
SIR (2018) : Brief Review -

A Must See just because mainstream romance oriented bollywood industry trying an unconventional Love-Story. Trying to count out realistic love stories made in bollywood industry and i remembered rare 2 or 3 films in the decade. Romance is one of the most popular genre in Bollywood and it has given many huge hits and popular iconic films but in today's era when almost every story seems like seen and done already, someone had to try unconventional methods. Here comes Rohena Gera's Must See attempt SIR if you have hunger to watch quality stuff trying to do something new and interesting. Sir is about a sophisticated young man falling in love with his House Maid after rejecting a High class Society girls. Now see why Sir is not typical mainstream Romance of Bollywood, point number 1 is the main two characters are realistic and very humble just like we see any common man and any common maid. Point number 2 is Characterization is detailed, reasonable, not exaggerated and not at all fictionally dramatic. 3rd point is the Maid here is ambitious and the Man is NRI yet both of them take care of their relationship for the sake of so called society people. The way Rohen Gera presented this film is amazing as it never lose interest, neither looks boring nor looks away from reality. When art of filmmaking meets an interesting storytelling then even dumb genre like Romance can come out as a quality product, here's your proof. Acting of Tillotama Shome and Vivek Gomber is natural but nothing on top level. Sir is blessed by quality writing and class direction but there are couple of things which were missing. The characters falling in love all of sudden without any long term reasons or attractions is not completely acceptable and even the climax would have made more sense if the last call was made from the receiver's side. Overall, Sir is a much needed break from boring romanticism and it also finds enough art in the same genre.

RATING - 7.5/10*

Very engaging romantic story set in Mumbai, India where the class/caste system is very real and a definite obstacle to love. The storyline is subtle and sweet, no clichés and some real education for us westerners about how people live in modern India.

Minor weaknesses in the story telling department, but as a whole a fairly entertaining and touching watch
Horst_In_Translation2 January 2019
Warning: Spoilers
"Sir" is a new 2018 movie (well can I still say "new" if it is 2019?) from India and France that is mostly in the English language. It runs for almost 100 minutes and there is focus on a fairly rich Indian man and the woman who is the employee at his house in terms of cooking etc. Unless you are into Indian movies, you probably won't have heard too much about the actors in here, but maybe even then not so much either because this film is really not a Bollywood movie at all. I am a bit surprised to see how long lead actress Shome has been in the industry already and in how many films she has played despite her still relatively young age. Same for her male counterpart Gomber who may not have been as prolific, but has also worked as an actor for many years already. These two are at the center of it all, her even more than him and at least one of them is in every scene from beginning to end.

This is absolutely not a cheesy feel-good romance movie or anything like that, there is some great depth in here. Usually in these, they get together at the very end or very early and fight through struggles to stay together. This one is different as they barely get together at all, even if the attraction is visible quickly, especially from his side. I liked the moments during which we see how they get closer: One would be when she asks a friend what a certain word means. Another one would be when she serves him dinner and early on he barely pays any attention to her except asking her to shut the door while later on he makes space for her to put the things on the table and would have liked her most certainly to stay and eat with him.

But while the film is always about the two being close, it is just as much as it is about them about those near him especially and how they act towards the woman, so we know they would never accept her really. I am not only talking about the mother, she acts reasonably, but also about friends that don't treat her right, as if she was some inferior human being. Of course, one scene that comes to mind is where she spills the drink over the woman's dress. Or, even more telling, the scene in which he asks her in the presence of her peers if he should wait for her, which for once shows us the other way around, namely that not only she won't fit into his world, but also that he won't fit into hers with the reaction of the other guy and also what it means to her. There were many smart and well-written scenes with lots of attention to detail.

There were maybe two inclusions only that I did not like that much. Early on, there is a scene in which she has severe doubts about her talent and prospects in the clothing/fashion industry and there she talks to him in a way that did not feel realistic given everything she said to him before that scene and how she said it. I am speaking about the scene when she says something along the lines of how her background will hurt her chances. The second scene I am referring to is his meltdown near the end which felt a bit out of place looking at how restrained he was before that all the time. But the more I think about it, the more I actually like it because it also shows how, even if he is a good and tolerant person, the upper-class people always see the lower-class people in a slightly derogatory way and so does he. He is far from perfect. These are minor criticisms. The good is certainly more frequent than the weak during these over 1.5 hours.

I also liked the ending. It feels realistic and lets you think how this is still a problem today, but yeah, India is a totally different country in terms of society and values compared to what we know in the western world. And finally, a huge thumbs-up to writer and director Rohena Gera who shows some nice talent here for this being only her second full feature film and first non-documentary. I think we can expect some really nice works in the future from that filmmaker. And also from lead actress Tillotama Shome, who was amazing and made it impossible to not fall in love with her character. Visually, she reminded me a bit of an Indian Miley Cyrus and I mean that as a big compliment. So yeah, go see this film. I recommend checking it out.

Simple tale of emotional Master with strong Maid!
ssridharindia13 July 2019
"You are strong", Sir (Master) says. The Maid asks her driver "What is strong?". That says all about this movie.

She is an embodiment of aspiration - determination - self respect and confidence (not only the character traits but is also responsible for making me sit in the chair for 90 minutes). He is a rich kid but emotionally broke down.

When your heart is weak and your feelings are low, anyone who brings solace during that period will be make you go after them. This feeling takes a step up when your are also fed with amazing food served in aristocratic style. The story takes this space and unfolds the incidents between them.

Technically the movie meets expectations in all quarters and final closing word is absorbing.

If you like this movie : Please watch "The Lunchbox" (Hindi) and Azhagi (Tamil) with sub titles.

Bold and Beautiful
dheevardp15 January 2021
To make a film on a taboo subject is in itself bold. Generally house helps are portrayed as 'ramu kaka' or 'kanta bai' or a devious conspiring individual but nothing beyond that (unless the hero or heroine is masquerading as one) Here is a film which breaks all the barriers and gives them an identity and treats them as humans having ambition.

Brilliant performances by everyone, no unnecessary drama or a subplot makes this movie watchable. The only constraint is the length. Should it have been 15 to 20 mins shorter it would be a more tighter movie.

Dull Story, Fake Morality
FiatFilm11 January 2021
One dimensional characters who can do no wrong (sounds like a fairy tale, doesn't it) even if they are not being watched, even if 'no one would know'. The protagonist knows how the end would turn out to be despite being vulnerable. She professes fake morality that defies reality and logic. It appears that the writer/director was redeeming herself in this story.

This is a drab tale of boring people.
