Skip it. I wanted to like it, but it missed the mark completely.
Nixdylan21 January 2018
I heard about this movie because I am a big fan of killer doll movies. Even if they are bad, if they are fun and have great set pieces or kills or even just memorable characters I can find enjoyment in them.

This was DOA however. The characters were flat, boring and annoying. And I'm fine with character development but it takes so long to get to the first kill that when it happens it is so underwhelming and random that I didn't even care.

You don't care about any of the characters or what the main character is going through. For a second early on I thought it might get interesting but the pacing and build is just so odd that even that falls flat.

I really truly wanted to like this. I'm a huge fan of low budget horror flicks but this tried to take itself way to seriously (its a movie about a killer elf doll...) and because of that it was boring and I'd say it wasn't even really worth spending the 2 dollars I did at the Redbox. Nothing really memorable here and there are so many better movies of this subject matter in the horror genre, you're better off checking those out or just re watching them. Maybe next time.

Not QUITE the worst film I've ever seen.
karlsaville24 November 2017
Not QUITE the worst film I've ever seen - after all, it IS in colour. But it's pretty close. It's certainly the lowest IMDb score I've given.

Firstly everyone in the film appears to have some significant physical disability or disfigurement. The lead actress is suffering from some kind of lip bloat, so her face resembles an over-inflated deep sea fish. The lead actor experiences frequent epileptic episodes which the camera rather cruelly continues filming. Either that or he's under the mistaken impression that this constitutes method acting. One of the characters who is 13 feet tall seems not to possess articulated limbs. Or a neck. Or a spine. I assume he is rotated into position by a hidden platform operated by dwarfs.

The elf of the title is a small doll approximately the size of a man's fist, who wields a miniature knife the length of a sewing needle. Using this fearsome instrument he somehow manages to dispatch most of the cast in the movie. Possibly because they are handicapped by the weight of their lips or their inability to articulate their limbs.

I'm not sure. I fast-forwarded most of the film and then abandoned it. But don't take my word for it - knock yourself out. Advisedly during the opening credits.

Who edited this mess?
Adogg29 July 2018
I don't normally write reviews especially negative ones but this film was just frustrating to watch. Solely on how poorly the sound editing/mixing was done. The film editor, believed it was Khu, needs a better set of headphones.

I watched it on Amazon so maybe they received a poor version of the movie but I highly doubt it. I even try adjusting my audio settings but that didn't change anything.

The sound mixing isn't the film only issue. There is the poor pacing, bad acting, and a lazy script. I only gave it a 2/10 due to the fact that some of the cinematography was decent.

The Elf, if you can find them.
Gunnar_R_Ingibjargarson9 February 2019
A young man who inherit an old toy shop starts to feel he's not alone. Calling this a B-movie, would be an insult to B- movies. This is a ultra trash.

Good Concept, Bad Execution
Reviews_of_the_Dead23 February 2019
This film was another that I decided to check out during my Christmas horror film round up in December. I had heard some unfavorable reviews of the film, but I can be a glutton for punishment, so I was curious to check it out. The official synopsis for this film is Nick (Gabriel Miller) is haunted by night terrors stemming from a tragic murder he saw when he was young. After inheriting an old toy shop, he discovers a cursed elf doll sealed inside an ancient chest with a naughty list of his family's names on it. He soon discovers what happened all those years ago.

I do have to say, that I feel if I would have read the synopsis before seeing the film, some of my issues would have been resolved. The film kicks off with an older man as he is sewing the mouth shut of a boy. Something then comes in and takes a list off his desks.

We then jumped to a couple inside a toyshop. Nick is there with his fiancée Victoria (Natassia Halabi). During my viewing of the film, I was confused as to why they were there. The film didn't do a very good job at establishing that. The film does get a bit creepy though as Nick goes into the back and finds a box. He reads an inscription on the side of it and opens it to find an elf doll. I found the doll looked fine, but I hated the knife that was in its hand. It does make a little bit of sense during the reveal why this knife is there, but it feels out of place. In the front of the store, Victoria is freaked out by a man outside and talks to her friend on the phone. We get the idea there is some apprehension between the couple.

It then establishes what that is. Nick spent some time in a mental hospital and still has night terror like dreams. He was there when his parents were murdered and he refuses to talk about it. It also explains why he hates Christmas. Victoria doesn't know why and he refuses to talk about it. When they get home, the elf doll has followed them there and this angers Victoria, thinking that Nick was the one who put it there.

Things take quite the turn when Nick goes to shower and has an episode. He is freaked and wants to leave. When he comes downstairs, Victoria's family is there. They don't seem to really like Nick and it seems to come from they know the truth about his past. Things take an even darker turn as the elf that was released starts to pick them off, one by one.

As I've kind of alluded to, I knew some of this from watching the film, but the synopsis I read to start this review filled in some of the blanks. For me as person who pays most attention to the story, this was problematic for me. I was lost early on and I think there are just major plot-holes in the story.

The film kind of explains how the old man is tied into all of this, but it also doesn't make sense. I like the idea that this doll is a conduit for evil and that it is coming to punish those who are bad. My problem here though is that it kills anyone in its path without abandoned. I think if you are going to use this concept, we need to have why they are being punished. I can think of a reason for some of the characters, as it was legit shown to us, but there are others that I think the film was just padding the body count.

I was also confused as to where this film is taking place. I saw at the end it was filmed in New Mexico. That isn't the most ideal setting for a Christmas film. We do hear that there is a horrible snowstorm coming, which is also fine. The characters are wearing heavy winter coats, but Victoria's outfit under it doesn't fit the weather. When the snow starts, the amount that they are getting it, yet none of it sticks. There is a snowman outside, but no snow around it. I think the film just didn't execute this well enough to explain where we are and how this blizzard isn't doing what it probably should be.

There are also some pacing issues with the film. Despite its low running time and the amount of kills we actually get, I found myself bored. I think a lot of this is actually because the film doesn't do well at establishing the characters to the point that we care about their fate. The film just moves so rapidly that we never get the points we need when things start to turn. There is a solid twist that happens later in the film, but it doesn't add too much. I will still give them credit for it and how it forces things to play out.

Acting for the film also had some issues. Halabi is quite attractive. I think her acting is okay in the film. I don't want to take too much away from her, as it legitimately could be just poorly written. She does at least have an interesting character arch. Miller was fine as well. I did believe he was someone who has experienced some horrible mental trauma as a child and never got over it. I do think my issues with him could also be with the writing. The rest of the cast was subpar. I didn't really care about them and they really didn't add a whole lot either.

Effects for the film were actually hit or miss for me. To start with the positive, I did think that the blood used in the film that was practical was fine. I thought some of the aftermath of attacks were as well. There was actually even a bit of good CGI. I think the elf coming to life with CGI when shown from a distance was fine. It was when it got closer is when I started to have problems. The snow and the blood spurts in the film were also done with computers and it turned me off.

Something else I have to give credit to the film is the one song that was used in the film. I really noticed it when we are seeing the elf toy when they first get back and it is used at the end as well. It has an eerie tubular bell type feel and I dug it. The rest of the score didn't stand out, but I have nothing negative to say about it either.

Now with that said, this film was unfortunately not good. It is kind of a shame, because the concept isn't horrible. Killer toy films are good and I think that Christmas horror films are a subgenre that does have some opportunities. It just seems like the film was plagued with underdevelopment of the story and characters. The two leads I thought had potential, but overall the acting was subpar. The effects in the film were also hit or miss. I did think that they kills themselves weren't bad and the theme for the elf was pretty good as well. This film isn't good and I really can't recommend this one to anyone unfortunately

The reviews are correct and actually nicer then they need to be. This movie is terrible. Whoever funded it made a terrible mistake. Please pick a charity next time. The worst acting, no apparent story line and an absent director. Pour a drink and enjoy.

Acting? Or extremely delayed reacting?
zuitsuit22 December 2020
There isn't much to be said that hasn't already been said about this movie, but I am 25 minutes into this movie I need to say something about the pacing of this script. Are they being fed their lines through an ear piece? From behind the camera? There are times when a character speaks and there is dead silence for several seconds. Sometimes they ask questions and the audience is just sitting here, waiting for the other character to answer. Who edited this film? The long delays in the acting and reacting on a set are supposed to be used for editing purposes. Is this an unnecessary attempt at suspense or tension? The audience is already confused and tense from the lack of context and narration. We don't need frustratingly long pauses in between anything that is supposed to be happening. It's a Christmas horror film! Give us a fun story and something to enjoy for an hour and a half. The audience is not looking for a bad attempt at a psychological thriller with a toy elf.

Forget about the elf and go somewhere else...
paul_haakonsen9 June 2018
Wow! This movie was terrible!

I managed to endure 35 minutes of it, before I gave up out of sheer and utter boredom. Nothing, and I do mean literally nothing, had happened in the 35 minutes.

The storyline was flat and pointless.

The characters were one-dimensional cardboard cut outs that had no personalities and were portrayed by actors whom seemed not to buy into the movie themselves.

There were also continuity errors as well; one scene where the guy found the elf doll it was snowing behind him then as the camera angle changed the snow was gone but it magically returned as the camera angle changed again. And also when the couple was having a conversation about the elf doll in their home, the woman's shirt was alternating between being pulled up or down as the camera angle changed.

For a horror movie then "The Elf" offered little, if anything at all, which would make it appealing to anyone. I didn't find anything worthwhile in the movie. And despite only having suffered through 35 minutes, then I can in all honesty say that I am not returning to finish it ever.

Stay well clear of this movie!

Rented, viewed, & never returned (purchased, not stolen) from Redbox
ashannon-3865119 December 2020
This movie, man. It's a Christmas freakin' classic. I would say that the plot is terrible, but for that to be true there would need to be a cohesive plot. This is more like the actors and crew were all allowed to write one sentence involving the topics "Christmas" "horror" and "elf doll". Once they were written, they were thrown into a fish bowl. Then they were drawn at random, glued onto pieces of paper with a purple gluestick (where most of the budget went), and used as loose suggestions for scenes improvised in various random locations.

My husband and I have developed a questionnaire to help you decide if this movie is right for you as you celebrate the Christmas season:

1) Do you often wish that people would talk at 1/10th of the normal speed and pause for at least 20 seconds longer than necessary between sentences while alternating volumes randomly? 2) Do you feel like most movies spoon-feed you context and vital information? Do you prefer to guess important details such as relationships between characters, names, what time of day or season it is, how someone ended up in a location, etc? 3) Do you enjoy suspending belief in basic physics and anatomy to really get into a good slasher film? 4) Do you get tired of accurate continuity between camera shots/scenes/basic plot points?

If you answered yes to any of these, it's worth a view. If you answered yes to all 4, then congratulations my friend... you have finally found your movie soul mate. Put on your favorite Christmas pjs and settle in for the most ecstasy-filled hour and a half of your life.

Here are our lingering questions (no spoilers): 1) Where is this magical land with on-demand snow? 2) Who does the house belong to? 3) Where did the sister go? Actually, this same question could be asked about any number of characters... 4) Why didn't anyone tell her that her zipper was down?

Bottom line: this movie is one-of-a-kind. Hallmark, Lifetime, Disney... all of them have made some great Christmas movies. But the content found in The Elf cannot be found anywhere else. Highly recommend.

So bad
kid-446246 January 2019
This movie is so bad. I don't know if I would even call it a "B" movie... Maybe somewhere in the middle of the alphabet. I think they spent most of the budget on promoting the movie and posters. Avoid... just avoid.

Should have been a porn...
meddlecore15 December 2018
Pretty much everything about this film is terrible.

The cinematography is beyond amateur, and the camera operator should have been fired (or shot!) for sucking ass.

Their pans are jerky as hell; with glitchy adjustments; and overexposures galore.

The story- which is completely void of any potential whatsoever- has no narrative structure; is poorly developed and riddled with plot holes.

While the acting is awful across the entire board.

And don't even get me started on the audio (why the hell would you have people whisper or face away from the camera and speak if your mics can't pick it up?!)...ugh.

For shame.

Even the elf sucks.

And there is no gore whatsoever (did that one girl puke out of her neck...what the hell?!).

How it was not shot as a porn is beyond me.

It should have been a porn.

That wouldn't have saved it, but it would have made it, at least, mildly interesting.

There's nothing scary about it. There's nothing funny about it. It's just plain bad (and not in a good way).

1.5 out of 10 (with all points going to the super hot lead actress).

All naughty, no nice
TheLittleSongbird25 August 2018
Was drawn into seeing 'The Elf', with a cool poster/cover, a promising trailer, an intriguing premise and as someone with a general appreciation for the genre it fits under. That it was low-budget, which from frequent personal experience is rarely a good sign due to that there are so many poor ones out there (though there are decent to good ones as well), made me though apprehensive.

It is sadly however yet another film seen recently, hence some reiteration because the exact same strengths and flaws present in those films are here, that to me was incredibly disappointing considering its potential which it doesn't do anywhere near enough with. 'The Elf' is really quite abominable, with so many huge flaws and doesn't do anywhere near enough with its potential, which was quite a good deal. There is nothing good here in 'The Elf', just amateur hour all round.

Going on to the negatives, the story does feel over-stretched and some of it comes over as vague and under-explained in the last third where the film especially became duller, more predictable, more senseless and less unsettled and never gaining momentum. All the characters are too sketchy and with cardboard thin and colourless personalities and with nowhere near enough to make one want to endear to them. Their annoying and illogical decision making and behaviours frustrates. The chemistry is bland and unfocused.

The sound quality is obvious and utilised cheaply (being too loud in the build ups and people's reactions) and all of the acting is lacking severely on the whole, that's actually an understatement as the worst of it is horrendous. There is no sense of horror or engagement with the awful predicament they're in, and no connecting with the character, it just reeks of indifference which makes the viewer not care less too.

Dialogue can be stilted and rambling while the pace and film drags on forever, apparent from the very start, never recovering that interest is lost fast. The ending has no build-up and just ends ridiculously. Found too many of the supposedly shocking moments not surprising or scary and the atmosphere dreary, due to the excessive obviousness, a lot of dumb and vague moments and explanations and the lack of tension and suspense. Thrills are none, thanks to stodginess and excessive over-familiarity, and found myself never invested in the drama, which tended to be indifferently acted, interminably paced and statically directed.

A lot of 'The Elf' has really dull and going nowhere plot elements and often nonsensical and confusing character motivations, while too many of the things to make you shocked are far from creative or unsettling. It all feels rather mean-spirited.

Nothing freaky or interesting, no development and too derivative, while everything is unimaginative and are more odd than scary, completely failing to show any sense of dread. There is nothing interesting or illuminating with what the film was trying to do and the drama is overwrought. Some badly sagging momentum too and a lot of weirdness. The direction is leaden, got the sense their heart was not in it, and the music is ill-fitting. 'The Elf' is very amateurish visually, making one feel nauseous and actually did feel a headache coming on. Especially the editing, some of the worst ever with more continuity errors than one can count.

Altogether, irredeemably terrible. 1/10 Bethany Cox

Shocking and not in a good way
stevereed-7590328 November 2017
A waste of 90 mins of my life. To say the acting is bad is generous. I can't think of what to write it's so bad apart from avoid this film unless you like torture which is what this film is. It's supposed to be a horror but I spent more time laughing. Do people actually make money from films like this ?? Surely not.

Literally the worst movie I've ever seen
colormeunimpressed11 December 2019
I love horror films and especially love Christmas themed horror, but man, was this movie bad. And no, I don't mean so bad it was good. I mean bad. This is quite literally the worst movie I have ever seen. I honestly don't believe there was an actual script. I think they were just told to wing it. There were moments of talking over each other, awkward pauses and random conversations that had nothing to do with the story. The music track was louder than the dialogue and the acting was just plain terrible. I think some dude just paid his friends to star in it.The elf, which didn't even look like an elf, just looked like a doll, was held up by someone behind a black sheet. I know this because at one point, I believe I saw their hand. That hand gave a better performance than everyone in this movie. Honestly, I wouldn't just skip this movie. I'd run far, far away from it.

Bad for your elf...
wigankongshow18 December 2020
Boring, badly written, terrible direction, bad acting.

I've watched some crap in my life but this has to be one of the worst.

Wouldn't let the director direct traffic let alone a film - a lot of the shots are oddly framed and cut heads off when talking, blurry too....

Avoid

False comments!
amcnamara-3998919 December 2018
Fantastic thriller with excellent cast. The cast really exhibited qualities similar to that of Hollywood movies. I'm unsure if I watched the same movie with the what the others are commenting but this thriller/horror is a 10/10 in my book.

Firstly, the acting is exceptional.. has the academy caught wind of these actors!? I plan on following this director Justin Price for a very long time. I'm still shocked by this movie. No longer keeping my elf on the shelf!

Bad bad bad...the film makers belong on the Naughty List!
grekotexan25 November 2018
There is honestly nothing good about this movie except the storyline had potential until this crew of film production school dropouts got their bumbling hands on it. Bad acting, bad directing, bad editing, awful props and effects, absolutely no thought in set design and no story development to speak of, this amateurish film is a waste of time.

The Elf.......Not worth watching.
missfellini27 December 2018
This movie was very cheap!

We watched it for about 30 minutes before we gave up. The story line was one sided .

The characters were one-dimensional with no personalities. It was like singing in the same tone. For Horror fans i have to say the 30 minutes watching, was nothing worthwhile.

Quite something
benjarrowsmith-6679827 December 2018
This movie was so awful I created an IMDb account just so that I could write a review on it.

As well as the excruciatingly bad plot and lazy script writing - I was unable to understand half of what the actors and actresses were saying. The music seemed to overpower the mumbling dialogue to the point where I couldn't even follow what was happening throughout the film.

I have no idea what all that nonsense about being able to remove a name from the list was about and after trying to find a plot explanation on wikipedia - and ultimately discovering that the movie in not even worthy of an entry on the website - I'm still not really sure how the movie was even resolved.

Truly a very strange movie indeed, I found myself laughing more than being frightened. Would recommend as a comedy.

Rating
rjc3258630 November 2019
There is no way this movie actually legitimately received an average rating of 5.7. There obviously had to be some kind of rating fraud, presumably by someone involved with this act of terrorism disguised as a movie. The rest of the reviews pretty much cover the reasons. Even if part of you likes discovering bad horror films, as I do, this one goes a bit too far in its poor quality.
