Not the Worst, But It is a Bland Experience
rcadavidson28 October 2017
Warning: Spoilers
I have to admit that I didn't even expect this to be good, and it sure didn't disappoint in that regard. It's mostly bland at best.

First of all, the animation is below average. Sometimes, it's good enough, but there are times where it didn't look good at all, like the last part of the movie. Have you ever seen those California Raisins commercials? Well, when you finally see Micheal Jackson for the first time, not a single body part or his bat form, the animation will more than likely remind you of that. In fact, that's what most of the dancing at the end looks like. It would have been fine if it was animated with clay, but this is a computer animated special. It also doesn't help that some models looking like plastic dolls, like the main characters for example. Some of it might have something to do with the lighting, but it does show how cheap this show is.

Another issue I have is the story. It's your typical "follow your heart" story, but the pacing is a bit fast. Seriously, as soon as a character is introduced, they're gone until the final scene. For example, the main characters' father and boss. Vincent wanted to be a DJ, but his father wants him to take over his grocery business, while Victoria wanted to dance at some party until her boss gives her the job of taking care of her dog for the night. While that much is known, you don't really see those two characters again until the final seconds of the movie. You also have no reason to find these characters interesting. While some of them do have motives, such as Hay Man wanting to bring music back from the authoritarian Calamity, they certainly don't bring any note-worthy personality. In fact, the two main characters are basically walking pieces of wood. Some of this could be blamed on pacing, since a majority don't have that much screen time, but these characters could've been fleshed out a bit more. Overall, the story wasn't great in the slightest, and it was just so bland.

It's pretty hard to recommend this movie. While it's not a bad movie, it's just bland to the point that you wish it was. It's fast pacing doesn't help matters either, as it just made the movie sorta hard to follow. I recommend not watching this movie seriously. About the only things about this special that was decent was the voice acting and music, but with experienced actors such as Jim Parsons (which means I could never unthink about Sheldon dancing Michael Jackson-style) and mostly Michael Jackson music (except for Someone's Watching Me), is that really a surprise? If you do watch it, just don't expect anything spectacular.

Difficult to follow special with little engaging things
Aleta_Nook27 October 2017
Warning: Spoilers
The title, to me, seems pretty misleading. They're calling this "Michael Jackson's Halloween Special". While they do have a lot of references to Michael Jackson throughout this, Michael Jackson is not the main character. It's kind of like how the title, "The Legend of Zelda" confused people even me because the protagonist in the franchise is not Zelda but rather Link. Therefore, they could've called this "The Michael Jackson Clues Halloween Special" or "The Case of Michael Jackson Halloween Special".

The story was unclear, it didn't seem to tell me exactly what the kids' quest was. Was it a quest for them to grow? Was it a quest for them to find a way to break the spell? It just seems all over the place.

The characters are pretty annoying and contrived. The two protagonists' names both start with a V and I don't like it when main characters or a bunch of characters have names that start with the same first letter because then I get the characters mixed up.

All of the jokes fall flat and didn't get anything but a little chuckle from me.

The only redeeming quality about this sub-par cartoon is probably the little bit of action somewhere in the last 10 minutes of it.

If Michael Jackson was still alive, he'd probably be pretty disappointed in this. I don't care if it's for kids. I don't even think kids over the age of 9 would be interested in it anyway. It's too silly for older kids. Younger kids might get a kick out of it.

6 Stars because it wasn't that bad, and I'm being somewhat generous here!
huggibear28 October 2017
Hmmm...what to think? Made for TV is all I can say! I didn't want to give this cartoon 5 stars because I had some enjoyment out of it. But it was a mediocre Halloween cartoon. The animation is phenomenal and some of the dancing is pretty darn good considering it mimics Michael Jackson's dances and what he was known for. I did enjoy that part. And of course the music was nicely incorporated with a decent mix of MJ songs with one of Rockwell's songs called 'Somebody's Watching Me'. However, I don't remember seeing the moon walk done on this cartoon, but their legs were so skinny and I could have missed it. Everyone knows the moon walk, right? That was a certain memory of Michael Jackson in my opinion and for some reason, I either missed it or it wasn't all that pronounced. They did do a lot of spinning though....and Michael Jackson in a cartoon made his debut appearance. Neat, MJ!! Dancing in his spirit. Well, for what it's worth, it wasn't all that bad. The story line was a bit corny and halloween-ish, but I gave it some credit because it's all with the spirit of Halloween and what can you expect but a piece of fantasy. I truly got into the 'dog's' character though and thought that was a cool cartoon dog.

entertaining for kids, no point for adults
nicolasgaraycochea29 October 2017
If this was a tribute to Michael Jackson, then it failed. Sure it had his music and it had him in it, but the writing was terrible and the integration of the music was forced. It didn't seem to have much of a moral to the story other than to dance. This is an entertaining movie for kids from about 4 to 6 possibly, any older and they might catch on that this show was pointless and sad. So much for honoring the King of Pop.

Cheap, Lousy, Predictable and Boring, and that's just the first 10 minutes.
azevrec27 October 2017
I don't think Michael Jackson would've approved this. Actually, I'm pretty sure MJ would've been offended by it.

Cheap animation, an extremely generic story with shoe-in characters and a terrible use of Michael Jackson music and references end up presenting one of the worst animated TV specials of all time. Stay away from it.

So disappointing
andheresumrsrobinson26 November 2017
I am a Huge MJ fan and this upset me so much I almost cried and that's sad because I am 36 years old and wanted to cry like a baby. The movie didn't feature enough o his music and plus the main Halloween song that Michael was known for was not even featured. Also I like Jim Parsons but his voice actually had no business voicing the part that it did. Overall I was very disappointed this film did MJ no justice but I only gave it 2 stars because my son liked it.

I don't get it.

Warning: Spoilers
I was puzzled when I first saw the trailer for this special. What does Michael Jackson have to do with Halloween, outside of the "Thriller" video, which was actually about horror movies rather than about the holiday?

The characters looked cute, so I thought I would give it a try. What I saw was 42 minutes of something that played out like a movie based on a video game. The two protagonists, Vincent and Victoria, make their way through a series of challenging areas... a pumpkin patch, a haunted house, a cliff, for example. They encounter strange anthropomorphic characters along the way, some are helpful, some are villains. All this time they are fleeing from an evil magical woman named Conformity, who, like her name suggests, hates individuality and freedom of expression. She is a manifestation of the main characters' real-life job experiences; they both work for unappreciative employers who view them as mere cogs in a machine.

What about Michael Jackson? Many hints are dropped throughout the special: a concealed figure with a gloved hand, a chimpanzee chauffeur named "Bubbles" (remember M.J.'s pet chimp?), a Michael Jackson- shaped icon that leads Vincent and Victoria to the next level in their journey. This leads up to an actual encounter with Michael that lasts maybe a couple of minutes.

I'm still trying to figure out the rationale behind creating a Halloween special which revolves around a celebrity who died in 2009. Does he return from the dead every October 31? Has he become a zombie, a reference to the "Thriller" music video? So many unanswerable questions.

I didn't hate this special. There was a vague "don't give up on your dreams" message to it, which has been overdone. But I think the concept would have had more potential as a video game, with its villains and challenging levels. I highly doubt I would view this a second time, if it is ever rebroadcast.

Love MJ, but not this!
hollywoodhomer22 November 2018
I love Michael Jackson and I love Halloween, but this was... 😖😖 I know some bad Halloween movies can have enough fun campiness to be watchable, but this wasn't.

I can't believe MJ's estate thought this is what fans want
Instead of listening to the fans they really want were like yeah let's make some bizarre Halloween movie with a lame plot and bunch of Michael Jackson references and music throughout. I honestly don't know what happened in this movie... I don't understand.

Very Good show and I love the end
as-1925328 October 2017
I watched the show and was impressed with how the music was integrated into the video. It was clear the plot was about conformity and how doing what you believe is alright in order to change things. The animation was very good. The animated dancing pumpkin's performance of MJ's dangerous song was excellent. Some of the scenes reminded me of the plot in Captain EO. The animated Michael performing Thriller was super. At the end, the message from Michael was Believe In Yourself.

All I know is that they don't really care about MJ
Horst_In_Translation5 November 2017
Warning: Spoilers
"Michael Jackson's Halloween" is an animated short film from this year, very new, very fresh and as the title tells us this was shown on Halloween for the first time. It is a small screen production that runs a bit over 40 minutes, but still stays in short film territory by IMDb standards. There were quite a few writers and directors working on this one, especially given the runtime, but the outcome may confirm the theory of too many cooks spoiling the broth. The makers aren't too famous here, but the voice cast has some decent names, several very experienced and decorated small screen actors like Baranski, Parsons, Garrett, Cumming, Liu and Eads, only to mention a few. But they should be ashamed a bit to appear in here as this entire project looks to me like a cheap attempt to cash in with Michael Jackson's popularity still years after his death. Animation is tolerable, the story is very mediocre and forgettable. The best thing are the songs by MJ they were allowed to use, but honestly these do not resemble any kind of creativity from the writers or directors here. Overall, not an honorable project in my opinion. I would especially not recommend it to MJ's big fans as they are be the ones who will be most disappointed here. A definite thumbs-down from me. Don't watch.

Who Approved This??/
penelopegriffin-5975521 October 2018
Very low quality. MJ would have never approved this production. Muted colors, bad animation. The cast roster is the best thing about it.

Loved it from beginning to end
varyagilyarevskaya3 November 2017
Warning: Spoilers
We watched MJ's Halloween twice and we loved it! It's fun, it's lovely, it's a pleasure to watch and listen. As a teacher with 20 years of experience in teaching teenagers, I can say that it's not easy to get them interested. But my students enjoyed the cartoon from beginning to end. As Michael Jackson himself once said, "Kids...are a very demanding audience. You can't fool them". The characters are charming and appealing to kids. Even the evil ones are not that evil. The actors, who voiced the characters, did a great job. The cartoon has a positive and clear message. If you don't have a goal in life, don't follow the music in your heart, you become a mindless zombie, a walking dead and it's easy to manipulate you. In the dancing finale, MJ's music unites people of all races and ages. Don't underestimate his influence on children and teenagers. And it will always be this way because there will never be another Michael Jackson.

fun, well-produced, hits all the marks
OneAnjel10 November 2021
I'm giving 10 stars not only because I know MJ himself would absolutely adore this film but because it has a lot of unfair low stars from people who expected to see something more grown-up and less Disney-ish, I think. I worked with MJ's inner circle in the 90s and I know Halloween was his favorite holiday and that he watched a lot of cartoons in general. He would have loved the messages in this film, which totally reflected his values. MJ fans will notice the film pretty much has all his famous moves, many of his album covers or themes, and utilizes many characterizations from Ghost and Thriller. Not surprisingly, one of the executive producers is John Branca who is not only an attorney managing the Jackson's estate but who worked with Michael for many years. Branca has stated Michael always wanted to do just such a production but it was not realized before he passed. This special was created and produced by Optimum Productions, owned by Jackson's estate. It's a close as you'll get to something actually sanctioned by Michael himself.

Entertaining Halloween Animated Special
kerry_hennigan25 September 2019
I was excited by the previews of this show, and for the most part it lived up to my expectations, with lots of MJ music, and a story line with a bit of a moral to it. The MJ references were cute, and while I get tired of seeing Michael depicted in his Thriller era guise, there were lots of other references to his later, more mature and (to me) exciting eras. This is a fun show for the kids, and entertaining for fans, so long as they are not expecting something like Thriller of Ghosts in animated form.
