There are some tough pills to swallow (pun intended) but you will be rewarded if you stick it out.

After the success of Vince & Kath & James comes Love You To The Stars And Back starring Julia Barretto and Joshua Garcia. The pair proved to be a success the second time around in this Antoinette Jadaone vehicle, about a girl that feels so out of place she'd rather be abducted by aliens, who along the way meets a boy who'd rather join her than go back to his family because he feels like a burden to them. Will they leave everything behind and start anew or stay and realize that all they need is already right in front of them?

You cannot be faulted if initially you compared this to A Walk to Remember or The Fault in our Stars, about starstruck lovers trying to defy the odds as Caloy played by Garcia has only 12 months to live due to being diagnosed with leukemia. Although the movie has its weak spots (wondering if it's due to LYTTSAB being moved up earlier due to complications with their supposed to be second movie Unexpectedly Yours,) you will find that you can hold a conversation about this movie on its own and that's a sign of good writing.

In my initial review for Barretto on Vince & Kath & James, you can't deny she is beautiful but needs to improve her acting. She did okay here, but the way she talks is distracting and affects the impact of the delivery of her lines. For Garcia, I mentioned V&K&J was his breakout movie but he cemented here that he is his own actor, shed away some of the John Lloyd school of acting and we can't fault him that he overshadowed Barretto. I mean the guy owned almost every scene that he was in. With their partnership combusting earlier than expected, here's hoping we see more great things from him in the future.

One of Joshlia's Best!

LYSB is one of Joshlia's Best because of it's cinematography. Joshua Garcia steals the show because he makes audience cry for his performance and Julia Barretto acted well as Mika. If you like Vince, Kath & James, you will surely love this movie.

Julia and Josh blew my mind away with their acting skills!
annmchiramel3 February 2023
Stumbled upon this movie on Netflix by chance and I couldn't be more grateful.

The movie made me laugh and then cry in a lot of places.

It was an emotional roller-coaster and it touches us in the right spots.

The story even though might be a tried and tested storyline, Julia and Joshs' acting brought the movie to a whole new level.

This movie will remain different from the other's of the same story line only because of them.

I am an Indian and my level of respect for Filipino actors have gone 100× higher because of them.

Treasure them because they are gonna change the face of the Philippines TV/film industry.

One of a kind

The movie was great and superb acting by the lead stars esp. To Joshua Garcia this movie has so many lessons about life. Well written movie Not your typical romance comedy instead the drama makes it look Interesting and you feel all the emotions they portray every time they Talk with each other or to their families. This drama teaches us Everything about life whether to accept it or not. Reality it is. I Must say they set the bar high for teens or millennials movie. Aside From that you need tissue here. Well done

Totally blown away by Joshua and Julia's acting prowess! They knocked this one out of the park. Unbelievable! This isn't your typical Star Cinema movie, that much I can say. This is the creation of the writer and master storyteller Antoinette Jadaone. I cant stress enough how good it is! This one's for the books! I love it!!!

Amazing movie!!!

One of the best film I've ever watched. The emotion is real plus all the characters are perfect. I recommend it to everybody. You will like the story because it's happening in real life, just take a journey of your life to make it happen. This movie will make you laugh and cry. The most important lesson here is to love, love without limitation. That's it.

A Masterpiece!

Warning: Spoilers
It's been awhile! Geez. I dunno where to start! I am so fudging excited to tell the world how happy I am with LOVE YOU TO THE STARS AND BACK movie of my JoshLia! Sheeesh. I am not being biased here. Yes, I am a certified Kapamilya but it doesn't mean that I am only saying these things because of loyalty. From the title to soundtracks to supporting cast to leads to their acting and of course the place! 100% is not enough. Joshua! My Josh... You are incredible! You made me laugh then cry! I cried a lot like super! You will definitely win an award for Best Actor soon. I can see a great future for you! You're such a great actor and you're still new in the industry! Keep it up! I will always support and love you. Been doing that since PBB days! Julia! Honestly, just been your fan recently in Vince Kath and James movie but it doesn't matter because I love you now. You are a beautiful soul and yes your acting skills too is awesome. You and Josh will definitely be one of the best love teams in history! I'll wait for the time when you already have a drama. Both of you are giving us pure happiness! So natural. The movie is not your usual romantic comedy movie! I know from the start it will have a lot of good reviews because it's Joshlia! The place itself. I so love the mountain, the scenery. You are promoting Batangas! I wanna go there! The supporting cast. All of them are amazing esp EA! Chuckles. The soundtracks! "Torete" and "Pangarap" are my favorites too! The story line! I love it! It's not just about love between a guy and a girl who met for the first time and fall in love. It's also about the loss of someone. The moving on stage where you need to accept that everything has changed but it doesn't mean that you need to give up. The worst thing that could happen between the son and the father and you can do nothing but to cry and forget about it. Family love! Your mother and siblings will always be there no matter what! The faith in God that no matter how painful it is you need to believe in Him coz He knows that you're in good hands. This movie made me travel. Roller-coaster for mixed emotions! Daebak! Suspense Drama Romantic Comedy. You will laugh (as in!) cry (super mega duper!!!) will make you kilig (to the bone marrow i swear!!!) I am not kidding! People in the Philippines and outside of the Philippines --- you better watch this movie! This is not your ordinary movie. It feels surreal! That bridge part is one of my favorite scenes in the movie... it's been a long time since I cried like that. The scriptwriter, directors and crews, supporting casts even extras, Goldie and of course the leads. My heart was stolen by this movie. JoshLia, please make more movies and dramas together. I'll be waiting! I am so proud my loves! Fighting! Two-thumbs UP Joshua and Julia... Caloy and Mika... A MUST WATCH MOVIE!!! A masterpiece! Phenomenal! Believe me! 😍😚 😙😘❤❤❤👏 👏👏👆💘💓

Formulaic plot
Sirfaro118 May 2021
Caloy ( Joshua Garcia) and Mika ( Julia Baretto) met by chance while Mika is escaping from her family problem. Caloy is battling a cancer and is set to meet his dad and the two embarked on a joyride together.

Perhaps inspired by "Fault in Our Stars", the pair continues to show chemistry in the screen, but alas, the story is predictable and no way that this is a 10, but neither is it a 1.

All the cringy ingredients are here, boy meet girl , the conflict and the make up, plus the "talk with the parent" scene. Still enjoyable to watch especially for fans. Vince, Kath and James maybe a better alternative.

Filipino cinema at its finest...
paul_haakonsen24 August 2022
I hadn't heard about the 2017 Filipino movie "Love You to the Stars and Back" before now in 2022, as I happened to stumble upon it by random chance. And seeing the cover, I thought it was just another run-of-the-mill romantic comedy that The Philippine cinema tends to spew out by the dozens. However, as I hadn't already seen the movie, of course I opted to give it a chance.

Writer and director Antoinette Jadaone really surprised me with this movie. Sure, the movie starts out like any other generic romantic comedy, but then the storyline starts to develop and this movie went from being just mediocre to downright amazing in a short time. I was so amazed with the storyline concocted and brought to the screen by Antoinette Jadaone, it is such a display of creative talent and a knack for writing something truly heartfelt and emotional.

Now, I am not overly familiar with the Filipino cinema, but have seen a handful or two of movies therefrom, but I have to admit that "Love You to the Stars and Back" is without a doubt the best and most outstanding of movies I have seen come from the Filipino cinema. I am so happy that I opted to sit down and watch "Love You to the Stars and Back", because it really is a heartfelt story and such a memorable movie.

Needless to say that I am not familiar with the cast ensemble in the movie, given my limited familiarity with the Filipino cinema, but leading actor Joshua Garcia and leading actress Julia Barretto put on such powerhouse performances that it has to be experienced. I was really impressed with their performances on the screen, both together and individually. They really took the well-written script from Antoinette Jadaone and made it their movie.

"Love You to the Stars and Back" is a movie that you simply have to watch. This is such a beautiful movie that it is more than well-worth taking the time and effort to watch. This movie is the type of movie that will get under the skin and stick with you for a long, long time - and I mean that in a positive way, of course.

My rating of "Love You to the Stars and Back" lands on a well-deserved eight out of ten stars.

could've been a good movie
gwynethnicolettepena11 January 2018
Various peculiar movies have been long acceptable, whether it be about zombies, monsters, or even aliens and it was a challenge to make a compelling and convincing film out of such unnatural themes. Philippine cinema has only made a few that is the why I was quite intrigued and excited when Star Cinema made a film as odd as this. I thought it was bold and progressive at the same time as it doesn't follow a normal routine Filipino movies do. However, the movie disappointed me. For a few reasons, one - the questionable character of Mika and her mother. The film did not show a strong basis to justify their beliefs to supernatural beings. In turn, I did not saw depth to their personalities. They failed to hook me with their eccentricity. Two - the delivery. I cringed the whole time to the upbeat conversation between Caloy and Mika. They look uncontained and importunate together. Perhaps they did it for charm but to me it seems unrealistic to find acquaintances continuously and playfully arguing over the shallowest things. I thought it would be more fitting if instead of disagreeing with one another, they would use the time to explain themselves and discuss their bizarre theories, hence, revealing more about their characters. (I was referring to the carabao-eating-humans part) It's wasteful for me.

Love You To The Stars And Back is basically A Walk To Remember on a road trip.
khayrirrw31 August 2017
Antoinette Jadaone's Love You To The Stars and Back film's cancer-centric plot is derivative of The Fault In Our Stars. Such was even made apparent by the similarity of the two film's titles.

The sub-par acting of Julia Barretto is only spared thanks to the superb acting effort of Joshua Garcia who serves as the saving grace of this yet-another-cancer-drama-romance-story that was saturated with cheesiness and mushiness aimed to appease its teen audiences who serve as its main demographic.

For older movie-goers, however, the film offers nothing new and gets easily tiring by the second hour of the movie.

For better or for worse, fans of cancer-drama-romance movies can go see this maindie film for throwback's sake. Love You To The Stars And Back is basically 'A Walk To Remember' on a road trip.

Watch and see for yourself.

Love is more powerful than anything

Warning: Spoilers
Love You to the Stars and Back is a 2017 Filipino romantic movie written and directed by Antoinette Jadaone. Starring Julia Barretto and Joshua Garcia,

The girl(Julia Baretto) named Mika and the boy(Joshua Garcia)named Caloy

The movie started to a chant "Ashira grevinda mama ajaarum" chanting by two women, Mika and her mother They always do this chant because they believe in aliens that when a person died the alien get them...

Feeling out place in her own home, an eccentric and socially awkward girl, Mika (Julia Barretto), decides to go on a road trip with a very strange goal - to look for aliens.

In her trip, Mika accidentally bumps into a simple and good-humored boy, Caloy (Joshua Garcia), whom she chooses to give a free ride to until he reaches his destination to his father because Caloy wanted to know his father.

There are a lot of things happened to this to character. Mika is surprised to know that Caloy has cancer. But despite his condition, he has learned to accept his fate and remained positive and joyful.

The two embark on a roadtrip filled with adventures and misadventures, not knowing that it will lead them to experiencing their most memorable romance at such a young age. They unexpectedly teach each other an important lesson on love and life - one that takes most people a lifetime to learn

The time comes that Caloy's illness become more severe so Mika decided to brought him to the hospital but, Caloy don't want to go to the hospital because he believes that it is the end of his life. At the end of the story the cancer had been cured and the relationship of the two becomes more deeper and they always get back to Mt. Milagros to search for aliens.

I really salute the maker of this movie and the two artists as well because the movie was so beautiful and they bring the whole audience in joy and in tears.

I dont love this and back
raymonddigital21 September 2018
I'm a fan of the writer/director Antoinette Jadaone but this for me is the worst movie in her portfolio. Acting for me is okay nothing special, good enough maybe but the acting of the male lead seems dry at times and over acted at some scenes. Well I can be patient with those shortcomings but what loses my patience is the cringeworthy dialogue and story. This was one those movies I was really really ready to walk out but I was with someone so I had to endure.

i couldn't finish this movie, acting was just too much
thedianalozano22 February 2023
Warning: Spoilers
Raymonddigital, agree ako jan. Love her as a director but this movie is just what the heck, why are there so many scenes where they're going mental? It's too much. This movie needs editing. Maybe Antoinette was like, yeah here's a movie about love but the guy is sick and has cancer, but the the actors failed to make me watch the whole movie, it was hard to finish, the 2 main characters were arguing for straight up 10 minutes. It maybe triggered my trauma back in my childhood. Now I'm here on IMDB, I had to create an account to write a review this movie, in the middle of the night! Like yeah this movie is bad...
