The 9th Chinese Visual Festival (Cvf) will be held in London 2nd – 9th May at BFI Southbank and King’s College London. This year’s Festival builds on the success of previous editions, bringing the very best in the cinema of the Chinese language speaking world to UK audiences in a programme of unprecedented variety crammed into one unmissable week.
This year, Cvf welcomes legendary director Stanley Kwan, known for some of the most acclaimed and beloved Hong Kong films of all time. Following the UK Premiere Opening Gala BFI Southbank screening of his latest film First Night Nerves, and rare screenings of the classic films Rouge and Women, Stanley Kwan will be taking part in an on-stage conversation at King’s College London. The conversation will cover Kwan’s career, from his early years at Tvb through to being recognised as one of the most important and acclaimed Hong Kong filmmakers of modern times.

Chicago – One of the most successful ongoing film festivals is Chicago’s Asian Pop-Up Cinema (Apuc). Facilitated by founder and veteran film programmer Sophia Wong Bocchio, the fest anticipates Season Eight with another amazing line-up of films from Japan, Mongolia, Singapore, Cambodia, Hong Kong, Taiwan, China, Indonesia and South Korea.
The format for the Spring 2019 Apuc is going through a change … instead of spreading films out to once a week, there will be multiple films each week, equalling a shorter calendar season. Many of the weeks will focus on one country, and as always there will be opportunities to meet the filmmakers and participate in post screening discussions (Patrick McDonald of HollywoodChicago.com is on board to host Q&As March 27th and 28th). And besides the Chicago screenings taking place at AMC River East 21, the Heritage Museum of Asian Art, the Alliance Francaise de Chicago, the Joffrey Ballet studio...

In this day and age anyone can become an internet star, and indeed go on to produce outputs of good quality without the need for a production team behind them. Lu Qingyi is a man who has unwittingly followed such a path. Having had a mixture of jobs, from labourer to artist, on returning to his hometown of Dushan in Guizhou, he kept a diary which his father subsequently posted online. Prompting interest in the life of his family, the photographer in Lu started to film his parents as they prepared for New Year; a new tradition which continued over the subsequent years.
Starting in 2013, we are introduced to the family members, with the focus on the parents going about their daily lives and preparations, always with a song in their heart. The second spring, however, brings great sadness as his older sister is taken ill with cancer, resulting in a period of mourning.
