Yungblud has released a new in-your-face, retro-themed video for his single “Happier,” which features Bring Me The Horizon’s Oli Sykes.
Filmed in Tokyo, the music video showcases the two artists yelling at the top of their lungs to karaoke lyrics, playing arcade machines, and rocking out on a crowded dance floor.
“Happier” is a chaotic, yet cathartic release compared to the artist’s “Hated,” which takes a darker turn. “Hated” looks at the lasting trauma Yungblud experienced following alleged sexual abuse as a child. In the music video, a...

Elliott Smith’s pre-solo band, Heatmiser, is back with another previously unreleased single from their forthcoming rarities compilation, The Music of Heatmiser (due on October 6th). Entitled “Bottle Rocket,” the song was recorded in 1992 and is a transportive artifact from the band’s early days. Stream it below.
Originally included on a demo cassette that the band was using to promote themselves during their 1992 tour, “Bottle Rocket” is not only a time-capsule of sorts, but also conveys Heatmiser’s lively energy and undeniable musical chemistry. Beginning with an appropriate amount of grungy, rock riffage, the song’s arrangement opens up to a melodic chorus with a descending chord progression and call-and-response vocals. Over top, lyrics from the band’s Neil Gust carry a feeling of yearning, albeit, a bit esoterically.
As Gust has explained recently, though, those esoteric lyrics had a very specific and personal meaning. Several years prior to writing “Bottle Rocket,...

Get ready to delve into The Music of Heatmiser. The Portland band best known as Elliott Smith’s pre-solo career springboard has announced a new rarities compilation arriving October 6th via Third Man Records, and a demo version of the track “Lowlife” is out now.
Heatmiser initially distributed The Music of Heatmiser — then a 6-song cassette — at local record stores and shows to promote the band before they released their 1993 debut LP, Dead Air. According to co-founding singer-guitarist Neil Gust, this longer package — featuring 23 additional demos, live tracks, rare versions, and previously unreleased songs — came together thanks to drummer Tony Lash.
“Tony found a bunch of forgotten recordings and started mixing them and sending them to me,” Gust said in a statement. “We were struck by the freewheeling energy of the band; you could hear how much fun we were having. In 1992 we could barely afford the studio so it...

Yungblud‘s greatest battles are both internal and external on his latest single “Lowlife.” Internally, both literally and figuratively, he can’t get out of the bed, out of the house, or out of his own head. Externally, he can’t get his name out of everyone else’s mouth. Finding himself lower than rock bottom, the British musician settles in there instead of crying to claw his way out.

Dark Nature begins with a much different, and more realistic horror than what follows. Joy is busy in the kitchen making dinner when Derek gets home. It’s obvious he’s not happy and from the way both Joy and the dog react we know that is a very bad thing. She barely escapes, the dog isn’t so lucky.
Six months later Joy is still trying to get past this trauma and her friend Carmen thinks she has the solution. She convinces her to join her, Tara (Helen Belay; Abracadavers), Shaina and some others on a camping trip/therapy session with the somewhat controversial Dr. Dunnely, “You guys talk about her like you’re in a cult”.

Third Window Films is quite different to many distributors in the fact that it’s not just incredibly niche, but also run totally ‘in-house’. I started Third Window in 2005, so it’s been 15 years now, and the goal of the label was to release many minor Asian films which probably wouldn’t have gotten released otherwise. As a massive fan of Asian cinema, I wanted to really focus on titles which had never been released before in the West, instead of working like a normal distributor would do in focusing mainly on easily ‘sellable’ and well-known titles. In order to do this, Third Window has been run incredibly tight, with no office, no real staff and keeping as much in house (literally run out of my home) as possible. This means handling as much of the process: from buying rights, making materials, subtitling, filming and editing extras,...

Overcoming adversity and learning to stand on your own two feet is far from an original story in cinema and clichés perhaps become a little unavoidable. Genta Matsugami takes on the narrative from a feminist perspective for his debut feature, as a young woman seeks to take control of her life in a world of endlessly feeble men.

The opening credits look like some sort of foot fetish porn. And that’s exactly what they are. Soon-to-be-eighteen Cocoa (Aya Kitai) has been working with her older brother’s former comedy partner Kazuo (Hiroki Ino) in shooting videos. Largely involving crushing or playing with things with her feet, the shoots themselves are fairly harmless, but once packaged and passed-on to Kazuo’s yakuza contacts, they are sold as fetish porn to willing customers.

“Don’t Judge a Book by Its Cover” is a proverb whose simple existence proves the fact impressionable souls will do so without fail. This monthly column focuses on the film industry’s willingness to capitalize on this truth, releasing one-sheets to serve as not representations of what audiences are to expect, but as propaganda to fill seats. Oftentimes they fail miserably.

“Lowlife” is not the movie you’d expect from a comedy collective making its first feature: While mordantly humorous, this tale of several lives fatefully intertwining in the dank underbelly of Los Angeles plays its violent, over-the-top events in pokerfaced fashion. Though the backtracking, overlapping episodic structure is reminiscent of “Pulp Fiction,” there’s none of the garrulous snark or fanboy winking Tarantino wannabes customarily indulge in. Instead, this team-written effort by L.A.-based crew Tomm Fondle (of which director Ryan Prows is a member) nicely calibrates a twisty course between straight crime melodrama and black comedy, one that has cult-following potential among adventurous genre fans.

The trailer for Lowlife looks absolutely crazy as it goes into what can go wrong during a caper involving an organ harvesting operation. The film just looks like all kinds of wrong as a woman actually seems to give permission to a man that looks as shady as can be to take one of her daughter’s kidneys. There’s also a man with a swastika tattooed on his face, all over his face in fact, that doesn’t make a lot of sense. Obviously it will if one watches the movie but from the outset it just looks crazy. The film almost

An insane trailer for a new film has been released for a movie called Lowlife. This thing looks like a wild and wacky dark horror action comedy. It certainly looks entertaining!
The sordid lives of small-time criminals collide when an organ harvesting caper goes very, very wrong. A Mexican wrestler with rage issues, a felon with a regrettable face tattoo, and an ex-junkie in search of a kidney collide in this wild, blood splattered adrenaline rush.
The movie obviously isn't going to be for everyone, but if you're a little on the demented side, you'll probably like what you will see in this trailer.
The movie comes from director Ryan Prows and it stars Nicki Micheaux, Ricardo Adam Zarate, Jon Oswald, Shaye Ogbonna, Santana Dempsey, and Mark Burnham. Lowlife in select theaters + on VOD starting April 6th this spring.

"Father, show me the way as a spirit of justice." IFC Midnight has launched an official trailer for a wacky horror/action comedy titled Lowlife, which first premiered at both the Fantasia Film Festival & FrightFest last year. From director Ryan Prows, this is about the sordid lives of an addict, an ex-con, and a luchador that collide when an organ harvesting caper goes very, very wrong. Starring Nicki Micheaux, Ricardo Adam Zarate, Jon Oswald, Shaye Ogbonna, Santana Dempsey, and Mark Burnham. This looks all kinds of weird and wacky and absurd and crazy, and perhaps fun? I don't even know. Just watch the trailer. Here's the first official trailer (+ poster) for Ryan Prows' Lowlife, direct from IFC's YouTube: The sordid lives of small-time criminals collide when an organ harvesting caper goes very, very wrong. There are a few adjectives that can be used to describe Ryan Prows' feature film debut Lowlife (review) but perhaps the most apt is nuts. The movie features a luchador playing muscle to a crazed doctor who is running a black-market organ ring, there are two hired killers (one of which has a swastika tattooed on his face), there's a pregnant woman and then a motel owner who is trying to save her husband.
All of these stories come together in Prows' movie which is a hilarious dark comedy with unexpected emotion and more than enough violence to make Robert Rodriguez chuckle with glee.

Director Ryan Prows introduced the screening of his feature film debut Lowlife with an unnecessary apology about how the movie should be buried deep in the midnight program of the festival and though it is, Viff also screens most of its late night selections with a second screening for those who don't dig the midnight movie scene though in this instance, I'm not sure the daylight crowd really appreciated the madness of Prows' movie.

In his second FrightFest 2017 interview of the day, host Stuart Wright talks to director Ryan Prows about his film Lowlife, which has its European premiere at Frightfest on Monday August 28th.
When a simple organ-harvesting caper goes awry, a twist of fate unites three of society’s forgotten and ignored: El Monstruo, a disgraced Mexican Wrestler working as hired muscle for the local crime boss; Crystal, a recovering addict desperate enough to arrange a black market kidney transplant to save her husband’s life; and Randy, a two-strike convict fresh out of prison, cursed with a full-face swastika tattoo and a best friend forcing him into a hare-brained kidnapping scheme. As their sordid, small-time lives collide, they must fight tooth and nail to save a pregnant woman from certain and gruesome death.
The Horror Channel Frightfest takes place August 24th – 28th 2017 at both the Empire Cinema and Prince Charles Cinema in London’s Leicester Square.

Horror Channel FrightFest takes place in London this weekend. Here's our pick of films to look out for...
Summer’s almost over and what better way to welcome in the spooky season than by hiding from the heat in a darkened room, with five days of wall-to-wall horror? Yep, it’s August Bank Holiday and that means the 18th annual London Horror Channel FrightFest is upon us. For some, this is a familiar pilgrimage. Veterans will be used to bloodshot eyes, numbness in the spine, a lack of nutrition and an acute anxiousness every time there’s a loud noise. For others, it may be their first visit and these are things to look forward to. Either way, FrightFest promises probably the biggest, purest, uncut dose of horror you can endure without going insane, complete with special guests, world premieres, live events and at least a couple of parties.

The underbelly of Los Angeles and following characters who are constantly struggling to survive by barely scraping by can feel pretty stale for fans of crime films. The 90’s explored every nook and cranny of this courtesy of Quentin Tarantino’s Pulp Fiction and the films that tried to benefit off its success. On paper, you’d think that in 2017, a film like Lowlife where it follows characters who have some connection would be celebrating its 20th anniversary. Yet, Lowlife is a new film and it is one of my favorite independent films of the year.
I will admit that having a luchador as a character in your film will always grab my curiosity, you still need to have a good film to hold my interest. A luchador named El Monstruo (played brilliantly by Ricardo Adam Zarate), who is not as big as his father or his brothers and therefore...

Great films often come out of nowhere. Such as the case with Lowlife, a thrilling crime caper directed by Ryan Prows. After its world premiere at Fantasia 2017, the director and his team have a very bright future ahead of them indeed. I spoke with him about making an indie film, what it feels like to be called the "next Tarantino," his cast, and more. Check out the trailer after the interview. ScreenAnarchy: You have a cast of veritable unknowns, which is a huge part of what makes Lowlife work. Mark Burnham, in particular, is terrifying. Tell us about why you cast who you did. Ryan Prows: I’d seen Mark in Wrong Cops, and loved his performance and presence in that film. I think...

Spoor
The Fantasia film festival saw its 21st edition come to a close last night after nearly 100,000 visitors had attended its screenings and events. In its closing awards ceremony, Agnieszka Holland's subversive drama Spoor took the Cheval Noir for Best Film. Thailand's Nattawut Poonpiriya was named Best Director for Bad Genius and Marianna Palka took Best Screenplay for Bitch.
The Best Actor award went to Song Kang-ho as a down on his luck man who rises to the occasion in A Taxi Driver, while Violetta Schurwlow won Best Actress for Cold Hell. There was a special mention for Ryan Prows' film Lowlife, which was praised for its energy and anarchic spirit.

"Veteran writer and director Agnieszka Holland's late season masterwork is not only a sumptuously photographed and compellingly crafted forensic thriller but a genuinely radical work of cinema, interrogating timely themes of gender, animal rights and.

The bloody, bizarro highlight of this year's Fantasia Film Festival, Ryan Prows' Lowlife lives up to its name and then some, spilling eccentric mayhem across several blocks of working-class Los Angeles and, among other unlikely things, eliciting sympathy for a man with a swastika tattoo covering his entire face. A captivating feature debut despite some missteps, it flashes back to a time when every other filmmaking newcomer wanted to be Quentin Tarantino; surprisingly, it does not provoke the weary eye-rolling that greeted so many of those films. Boutique distribs should pay attention as it begins its festival-circuit run.

An ex-junkie, ex-convict, and luchador enter a fish taco shack … the punch line is a three-pronged adventure through Compton while engulfed by the shadow of a lunatic pimp moonlighting as a black market organ wholesaler. Director Ryan Prows and the rest of his quintet of writers (Tim Cairo, Jake Gibson, Shaye Ogbonna, and Maxwell Michael Towson) bring together a menagerie of monsters, fiends, thugs, and criminals all searching for an escape in their violently heart-warming film Lowlife. Full of heinous acts justified by a universal goal to save the ones they love, every eccentrically drawn character earns our sympathy despite the blood spilled by their hands. With their worlds colliding just as each appears ready to implode, a common enemy unites the hope within to reclaim their honor.

Ryan Prows’ Lowlife is a true-to-form sonofabitch. From frame one, the film smacks of Tarantino hoodishness – but sustainability is key. A larger story is divided into chapters, as Prows navigates this messy grey zone where “decent” people merely hope to survive. Lives collide, all connected by a single taco-slinging underworld boss. There’s vibrant character work and a surprising fluidity in jagged narration, but one segment remains the ugly ducking of this cartoonish Barrio calamity. That’s the only thing bogging down Prows’ big-picture vision, and even at that, remaining cinematics do all the talking.
The fun of Lowlife is experiencing scenes as they come at you, so I’ll be brief and spoiler-free. Necessary information is that Teddy “Bear” Haynes (Mark Burnham) is an asshole you don’t want to mess with. El Monstruo (Ricardo Adam Zarate) swears allegiance to his “Jefe,” but finds himself betrayed but pregnant wife...

Mix the insane violence and weaving vignettes of “Pulp Fiction” with the seedy underbelly of “Breaking Bad,” and you have Ryan Prows’ directorial debut, “Lowlife,” a messy but ultimately interesting look a a group of downtrodden individuals who get mixed up in an organ harvesting scheme.
“Lowlife” is broken into four interweaving vignettes that move back and forth through time, slowly revealing different sides to each character, coloring in the story, and tangling them up even tighter into a web of blackmail, deception, kidnapping, and revenge. And the film’s title can certainly be applied to every character in their own right, as each vignette reveals more about their character and the mess they all have found themselves in.
The film opens with an Ice agent pulling off a sketchy, solo raid of a cheap motel at night. Crystal (Nicki Micheaux), the motel owner, tries to step in and save...
