- Southern attorney Angie Lawrence searches of the rightful owner of a journal recovered from an antebellum home she inherited. The journal is full of mystery and history that just may lead her to the future she has always dreamed of.
- Southern lawyers Andrew McGrath and Angie Lawrence have been seeking the keys to their past and their future most of their lives. Unbeknownst to either of them each has the piece to the puzzle the other is seeking. Through the words of a young girl written in a journal well over a 150 years ago, found by accident, both Angie and Andrew begin the journey of unraveling their history. The last thing they expected to discover was mystery and murder along the way. Neither of them were expecting the brutality they would encounter or the love that grew from it. They quickly realize they must overcome the past if they have any hope for a future together.—Author Deborah Robillard
- The Crickets Dance chapter was not in the first draft of Deborah's book. It came later when she wanted to give Angie and Andrew a moment to fall in love and to show the cabin Ruben built in modern times which is a reflection of his heritage. The Crickets represent music that all people can relate to and is not limited to any ethnic background, but rather a sound easily recognized by everyone and comes from the natural symphony God created. As the characters fall in love on neutral ground without the judgement or scrutiny of others they see futures neither of them had ever envisioned or considered. The Dance gives them a moment in time where black and white don't exist among the developing feelings they have for one another. Deborah's intent in writing this book was to take the politics out of love and show what it truly means to see others with your heart and not simply your eyes, eliminating preconceived notions people have about one another. It is also a tribute to her class mates from Peach County High School who fought to have the first mixed prom in her small Georgia community in 1990, as prior the celebration and opportunity to say goodbye to lifelong friends had been held separately.
Once Angie realizes Andrew is the key to her future and Andrew realizes Angie holds the keys to his past the love and admiration that grows between them has nothing to do with the color of their skin, but the openness of their hearts to accept one another on a deeper level than the one reflected in the mirror. She hopes this concept comes through in the film adaptation of her story.
