Poor man's Arachnophobia
Kamurai2515 June 2020
Almost decent watch, don't want to watch this again, and can only recommend for a Bad Movie Night.

They got some decent actors (even the kids), they had some acceptable production value, but I was still surprised to see this was a 2019 movie, it looks closer to 2010.

The real shame is that once it starts to horror movie, it actually does a good job. There are clearly things from Jaws and Alien, maybe even The Thing, sprinkled in this, so at least the people involved are legitimate horror people. All the establishing story, and the B-plot involving everyone outside the 2 houses is just a waste. None of it pays off.

I get that they were trying to do what Arachnophobia did, but that had a point to it.

We came here to see a spider hunt people, just give us that.

More like a family drama than a creature feature
Willzu66626 September 2019
This was more like a dark family drama with a subplot involving a big ancient spider.

An Ambitous, Both Hit & Miss Creature Feature
TwistedContent30 August 2019
"Itsy Bitsy" is a creature feature & a mother/children relationship drama all in one, and, well, there's both ups and downs in it. Now, I don't have arachnophobia, and while the movie didn't make itchy much, it sure did creep out my little sister. Controversial opinion, but it's quite a true stereotype - women and children being afraid of spiders.

I always start with the things I liked, so here goes: Practical FX! Yes, there's no cgi, you're in for a treat if you like gooey & squishy old-shcool horror effects. Performances are, in my opinon, the next best thing - besides Bruce Davison I didn't know any of the actors & had to check 'em out here on IMDb during the watch, because, honestly, they were pretty good at what they were doing. I surprised myself by concluding that my favorite parts of "Itsy Bitsy" were actually the conflicts between the mother and the son or simply the spider-less parts of the story. Not all of them, but some.

The dissapointments are as follows: It's a much less spider-oriented movie than You probably think, I'd say it's 50/50 that and a relationship drama. Secondly, I thought the intro of the story was pretty wonky & could've been anything else, really. Thirdly, the pacing can get slow at times, eventually making those 90 minutes feel pretty stretched out. Also, while the practical FX are awesome and all, it doesn't get much crazier with the passing runtime, my expectations for the climax were bigger & I suppose Yours might be too.

"Bloody Disgusting" stated that "Itsy Bitsy" keeps Arachnophobia alive and well & while it may be so, the summary of it is a pretty average horror flick that shows great effort, but comes out as equal parts awesome and whacky. My rating: 5/10.

Decent movie, but could have been so much more.
pipo-3 September 2019
I felt it was very drawn out, we get it the mother has a addiction, and has flashbacks - they overly repeated this and really it had nothing to do with the plot, the mother seemed to really neglect these kids, I felt the spider was the least of their worries.

anyways I was hoping there would of been a special way to defeat the spider (like get help from the tribe or the artifact), but blah it focused more on the drama and trauma rather then the spider which was well done but only a short part of the movie.

it should have been called 'just a itsy bitsy addiction

Itsy Bitsy Boring!!
80sHorror27 September 2019
Story starts not bad, idea is ok, but this was such a pain to watch, that is hard to imagine. Slow paced horror story mixed with wannabe drama and a bit of soap love story. There are few scary ideas (seen before) runing throuhg the whole film, its just boring. Story becames a mess, and characters are really not likable, none of them. Super predictable twists. Waste of time.

Not the best, but not the best
jcslawyer6 June 2020
Yes, the title was meant to say that. This movie is hokey, cheesy, unoriginal and kinda dumb. But, I was entertained and watched the entire film...and didn't get bored. That says something right?

The story is almost storybook ripoff of Arachnophobia but without the comedic element. And there's really only one spider, I think, except babies and disgusting egg sacks. Instead, they introduce a spider who's supposed to be an ancient deity. Again kinda dumb. With all this power and its ability to survive for millennia, it's pretty cool this one lady gives it a run for its money.

Acting is not anything to write home about and the dialogue was stupid. I wish I felt the makers didn't take making this so seriously. But I'm pretty sure they did.

That being said, if you're good with a mindless film you don't care to think about afterwards (except that the mom from Pet Sematary was in it), then give it a shot.

A horror for arachnophobes
JakubBednar30 August 2019
If you're not afraid of spiders, this movie will probably not be scary at all to you. I'm an avid fan of horrors and have become desensitized over the years but always looking for something different and always looking for gore. For me this movie really could have been made as a short. There is nothing horror about the first hour of this movie. I was settling on 4 stars until I saw the last 20 minutes and it made up for the bore the first hour gave me.

I was on the spider's side until he killed the cat. I wasn't on Team Spider after that.
fedor810 December 2019
Warning: Spoilers
I am a big fan of horror-movie silliness. One such example is how the horror events are initiated here. An African guy arrives uninvited to the house of the widower of a woman that helped the African during his childhood. It's basically the black guy saying something like "I owe your wife a lot, and so to repay my debt to her, I bring you this gift - a huge spider that will start killing people off randomly and make your life miserable". Not in these exact words, of course, but that's basically what he came for.

It makes little sense, especially his smashing of his "gift", which resulted in his own demise - indicating that he didn't know what the hell he was bringing. And yet, we were previously led to believe that he did know.

But yeah, ignore logic. The main thing is that the writer got an excuse to unleash the spider! Sure, he could have done this in a much more intelligent, more convincing way, but I guess logic (and especially writing) isn't his strong suit.

There is more bizarre nonsense later on too. For example the bizarre sheriff, played with B-movie zeal by the highly untalented nepotist Denise Crosby, prying into whassername's private affairs, just because whassername was freaked out by a kid screaming at the window. Well, it's either that or because the local sheriff is bored and likes to pick up the latest gossip. I didn't realize a sheriff's job description included being a psychologist to random strangers, even if the cop in question happens to be a woman.

Not that I immediately realized that Crosby was a female sheriff.

In fact, every time Sheriff Crosby appears, her character just gets weirder and dumber. One of her assistant cops is cast as a weird-looking slacker type from a Linklater indie flick. The whole film is like this: off. Tilted to the side. To the side of unnecessary silliness.

Rather silly is the nurse's reaction when she shoves her kids out of the spider-infested room: instead of following them outside, she STAYS inside, as some sort of pointless moment of self-sacrifice - as if having herself killed right in front of them will somehow be beneficial to her kids. She had plenty of time to leave the room, hence her decision was a laughably over-dramatic plot-device decision from the awful writers.

Speaking of dramatic, there is way too much family drama here, especially for a horror film. A MONSTER flick with characterization! Yeah, we sure needed that. We are constantly bored with her flashbacks and her pill addiction. I mean, it's not even a proper addiction like heroin or crack!

The spiders start wrecking havoc only ONE HOUR into the movie. So yes, you've been warned. By the time they finally go on the attack against humans, you will be so utterly bored you won't give a hoot. Or you might even be rooting for them.

Then again... the cat. Unforgivable. Spiders are definitely the bad guys here.

When asked how she bumped her head, the girl says: "I was looking for kitty-cat in the sticky snow with the dolls." Of course, if she had simply said "I was trying to find the missing cat in the huge-ass spider web that's covered the entire attic as well as all my dolls" then the plot would have gone forward, moving somewhere. Alas, kids get used as padding, as goofy plot-devices to stretch out a thin plot about a large spider invading a house. Because nobody ever believes them. And because they speak Nonsensese at the most inopportune moments. Well, I did say the writing was pitiful.

Why are the three of them allowed to remain in the house after the owner is found killed by something that might indicate a biological threat? No explanation there either.

Boring and in many occasions it's insufferable to watch.
Martinito_081834 October 2019
This is probably the most insufferable movie that i saw this year. I didn't had any expectations before watching it and i didn't even heard about the movie from anyone and after seeing it: it's not surprising that no one mentions it at all.

The story is very average and there are some moments that are very dumb and predictable; horribly written characters that it's hard to relate to; weak cinematography that doesn't have any appealing, great or memorable camera work; dialogue that was OK at best; the music was average and forgettable; the practical effects look OK, but they are not amazing or fantastic, so that it can make the movie watchable or worth watching; the sound is alright, but it does have some stock sound effects, which were distracting in some moments; very weak acting from the adult actors, but unfortunately it also includes horrible child acting, especially the little girl, who is impossible to take very seriously when she is on screen and gives the worst performance in the entire movie.

I was trying to find something positive that i can say or give to the movie, but it was impossible. It's a movie that i'll probably never going to watch ever again. So do yourself a favor and just skip it.

That was a fun little movie...
Wikkid_Gamez31 August 2019
Was it a masterpiece? No.... But it was a fun movie with good acting and good creature effects. Fun little addition for this coming Halloween, one I won't mind my kids watching when they want something scary. They love scary movies but finding age appropriate ones that are not full of ridiculous amounts of nudity or sexual content isn't easy. This one was clean and had a decent enough story to be entertaining. I don't see how it has anything at all to do with the nursery rhyme as it claims however, but that aside it was worth a watch. I will give a very simple summary without giving anything away for those that are curious about the basic story line but want to watch it for themselves. It is a basic creature feature and follows that formula.

After the intro that shows the origin of where the spider came from the movie jumps to a family that is moving across country for a job. The mother is a nurse, and long story short on their end she is looking for a new start with her children from a tragic past (yes its typical I know) the man that hired her is an older, retired archeologist with a house full of antiquity. Most of it appears to be from places like Africa and Brazil. Mostly tribal looking. Things happen, the story plays out in a predictable way yet still managed to hold my attention.

There are a few very familiar faces that I like. The sheriff (Rachel Creed in the original movie version of Pet Cemetary and Lt. Yar in Star Trek: The Next Generation among other things), one of her deputy's (Stranger Things and the tv show A Series Of Unfortunate Events) and the archeologist (Kingdom Hospital, The Excorcist, tv series and countless other things) and the kids in this movie are adorable and likeable.

Overall, if you are the type of person to nitpick every single detail looking for flaws then skip this one, but if you are like me and can just have fun with a movie and enjoy it as long as the acting is decent and do not mind that its not an "original" idea or some masterpiece then give it a shot. It would make a fun movie for a movie night with friends or family, or as background for upcoming Halloween parties, or for those that love creature features, or hate spiders and like to be creeped out lol.

Meh!
LoremIpsum3211 September 2019
Ok, the big spider creature looked nasty, hence it did it's part as the antagonist, but the characters and the people who played them... annoying beyond comprehension and completely unbearable (well, Bruce Davison was doing alright, not that it mattered much).

Also the pace was way too slow, except for the finale nothing was going, and even there the "action/horror" sucked.

Do yourself a favor: Watch "Arachnophobia" instead, if you're in the mood for something entertaining with spiders and actually good actors, just don't bother with this mess.

I have questions
maritz-stephanie16 April 2020
Warning: Spoilers
1. Where's the father?

2. Why is he not looking after the children as it seems that the mother is incapable of doing so?

3. Why does the mother eat her drug pills like candy and just not swallow them?

4. Why does a 10 year old (I'm assuming that's his age) have to look after his younger sibling?

5. Why do the children not have adult supervision?

6. Why don't the children go to school?

7. How can that big a&& spider move around so quickly and nobody notices it?

8. Why is all the responsibility of all chores including taking care of his sister fall on the young boy?

9. Why don't they ever eat?

10. Why did the police lady not taken the children away from that awful pathetic mother?

Ok some of these questions are silly but still. This movie kinda sucked. The intro was kinda ok that's why I gave the movie a three.

clumsy and basically flawfilled
ops-5253530 August 2019
From start to end, it seems like a horror project made on accord, note especially the difference in daylight in consecutive scenes. a director that cant wait for the correct time to shoot scenes is not independent or good enough. well nough about that...

its a horror film pointed at the arachnophobic ones of us, which i am, but i werent scared or frightened, but some dignification shall be given to them who made the thing.

the acting are slow and at times very amateuristic, and its very badly plotted together all in all. the children shall have a badge for furnishing the new house in a blitz like speed, even though i think the social services would be gobsmacked by the neglect of the children in the start.

i must admit that im on the grumpy road of being a grumpy old man, but this was not a horror movie to remember, not for me that is, but maybe for you.

Creature feature with (a bit of) bite.
paulclaassen28 September 2019
The title suggests a kid's story, but 'Itsy Bitsy' is definitely not for kids, as it is bound to give them nightmares.

There really hasn't been a good spider movie since 'Arachnophobia' way back in 1990 and I guess - for now - this will have to suffice as the next best spider movie. You can see the director and crew tried really hard and you have to commend them for that.

The script is a bit weak and the film can be used as a handbook for cliches. The acting wasn't the most convincing, but I thought Elizabeth Roberts wasn't bad as a mother suffering from post traumatic stress after the death of her youngest child. She actually got better as the movie progressed and her role became more demanding. The little girl (played by Chloe Perrin) was unfortunately not good at all.

If you allow yourself not to be too critical - and look beyond all the cliches and flaws - you will find this an enjoyable enough watch. Some of the creature effects were very good. The film is a bit slow moving with not much happening apart from family conflict, and is maybe more of a drama with horror elements than a horror film.

Decent
rob-745821 September 2019
I'm not a horror fan. If I were I'd probably give this movie a seven. Good special effects. I was especially satisfied with the acting of the children. As with many such movies there are implausibles that go against known science but are necessary for the movie to work. I won't mention what they are as to not give anything away. Not as good as "Arachnophobia" but worth a view.

Not a lot happens until the end. I liked the buildup with Jesse and Walter but I was disappointed to see that end so soon. The mother and daughter are so unlikable. Jesse (who is played by Arman Darbo) should've been the main focus who had to deal with these awful characters the whole time.

Also, the ending was confusing and nothing prior to it was even explained.

ITSY BITSY - A decent creature feature with GREAT practical spider FX!
JJett1313132 September 2019
I watched this movie last night and it was pretty decent/good! i wish more had been explored with the Spider Goddess connection to the actual spider though and maybe focus a tad less on the family/loss/grief side of things. the spider FX were very good and (i'm pretty sure) practical for the most part (there may be some CGI at the end). the acting from the mom and the actor who plays her son is notably good.

overall it's a pretty good, serious spider horror/drama movie.

oh and that poster for the film is terrible and has nothing to do with the actual movie (other than a spider).

"She Lives In The Darkness Between The Stars!"...
azathothpwiggins27 April 2020
ITSY BITSY begins with a tribal ritual, where a black, earthen jar / container is stolen by desperate men. The scene shifts to a mother (Elizabeth Roberts) and her two kids relocating to her new job in a new town. She will be providing in-home care for an elderly collector of tribal artifacts (Bruce Davison- WILLARD), who just happens to have received said container.

As more is learned about the sacred pottery, it becomes clear that something terrible is brewing. When it is broken, the horror is unleashed.

Two things can be said up front: #1- Arachnophobes will utterly hate this movie! #2- Monster / practical effects fans will absolutely love it!

The complaints about the "family drama" aspect of the movie are unfounded. Any such drama is just a necessary part of the overall story, unless we only want a pointless series of jump scares. The movie also has its own mythology, explaining the significance of the creature. A solid monster movie with some creepy moments.

Denise Crosby co-stars as Sheriff Jane Dunne...

A golden opportunity missed here.
CabbageCustard26 September 2019
Warning: Spoilers
The makers of this putative horror movie have missed a wonderful opportunity. This could have been a wonderful horror movie parody - all the elements are there. Instead, they play it for the scares and not the laughs. Pity.

You have to hand it to them though. There is hardly a horror movie cliché they miss in the 95 minutes this thing runs. Actually, I take that back. They do miss one important element: they fail completely to make this scary.

This movie doesn't waste any time getting into the action. The title sequences are barely over before we're racing through the jungle, having just killed a bunch of villagers and stolen a sacred icon belonging to the spider goddess Karma-Sutra or Tia Maria (or something like that. You get the idea.) We just know that something is going to happen to the sacred object and the spider goddess Kahlua (or something like that, but with a hyphen) is going to be pissed. And she is, and her vengeance is the basis of the plot. Just as this movie wastes no time in getting moving, it hardly takes any time at all before you realise this has all the makings of a real turkey. You are correct. This movie misses no attempt in trying to scare the audience and when it's not doing that, this movies tries to gross us out with scenes of decaying flesh and spiders laying gooey, slimy egg sacs. Another cliché this movie does miss is having a nubile late-teenage girl dressed in a negligee, descending the stairs into a dark, basement looking for a possible burglar and armed only with a torch and her mobile phone. The movie makes up for this oversight by having a 8 or 9 year old girl climb up a wooden ladder into a dark attic in the middle of the night looking for a missing doll. I'm sure that sort of thing is a common occurrence in families with 8 or 9 year old girls. Anyway...

The acting in this is adequate, not that the actors are given much to do. I don't know what Bruce Davison is doing here. He's a good actor and he deserves better. Maybe he thought it was going to be a comedy too?? Denise Crosby doesn't seem to have had a decent role since she left the starship Enterprise. I have never come across Elizabeth Roberts, who plays the mother, before. Based on her acting here I hope she has a proper job to fall back on. Again though, maybe the problem is with the script. The two young actors who play the children do a good job, despite the drivel they're given to work with, and I wish them well for their future acting gigs.

Based on my review you might think I didn't enjoy this. You are correct. This was a long 95 minutes. If you are looking for a good scare or even just a good movie, and you're partial to a bit of arachnophobia there are much better movies than this to fulfill your appetite.

Great Spider Movie! I predict it will become a spider classic.
kwcman9 April 2020
Great movie all around! Excellent writing, directing, acting and special effects!

It begins peacefully enough with a twinge of sadness for the mother, her children and her charge, an elderly man who is smart, but needs care. Very shortly in the film, the spider appears and is stealthy and scary. It is big enough to cause extreme anxiety, but not so big that it looks hokey. In other words, it looks real even though it has a mystical origin, and... It is more than capable of inflicting harm. There are enough suspenseful moments to keep you on the edge of your seat and never really lets up. Make sure to watch it until the end of the credits,

Denise Crosby gives a believable and likeable performance as the County Sheriff. She is strong and compassionate to the aggrieved family and acts as any good cop should do in a monster movie..

If you grew up with monster movies as I did, I think you will be glad to see this one. It is a scary treat, well worth the watching.

Creepy crawlies...
paul_haakonsen4 September 2019
I wasn't really expecting much from "Itsy Bitsy" given the fact that a lot of movies with monstrous spiders in them tend to be quite questionable, either in special effects or just the overall plot.

However, I still sat down to watch the 2019 movie "Itsy Bitsy", despite of its somewhat cheesy title. After all, it is a creature feature and I do enjoy such horror movies. And luckily so, because "Itsy Bitsy" from writers Jason Alvino, Bryan Dick and Micah Gallo actually turned out to be rather enjoyable.

The storyline told here in "Itsy Bitsy" was a bit over simplified. I mean, an ancient urn is broken and a carnivorous spider is awoken in the process. Sure, it sounds like an interesting tale, but look at it realistically, then it was just actually a stupid storyline. But still, for a creature feature of this kind, you don't need realism - you need a solid creature and an entertaining movie.

Turns out that "Itsy Bitsy" actually had that and was that, so this was actually an entertaining and enjoyable movie.

And the spider in the movie was just phenomenal. It really looked realistic, and it was such a joy to watch it scuttle about in the movie and do its business. And for a creature feature, then having believable and realistic special effects and/or CGI is everything. They had that here, so thumbs up to the special effects team.

It was nice to see Bruce Davison in a movie such as this, and he really performed well in his role. I wasn't particularly familiar with Elizabeth Roberts, but she performed quite well also, and she had a very interesting character to work with in the movie. And if you are a true horror fan, then you will be pleased to see that Denise Crosby is also in the movie.

I can warmly recommend that you take the time to sit down and watch "Itsy Bitsy" if you enjoy creature features that have that old school classic feel to it in terms of horror movies. I am rating "Itsy Bitsy" seven out of ten stars.

Basic creature feature
markusibbetson9 May 2020
Warning: Spoilers
Itsy Bitsy it far from the worst horror film I've ever seen, but it's also far from the best.

The biggest problem this film has is that it focuses too much on the family drama, which should have been a subplot - there's too many of the mother's flashbacks to a car accident that claimed her son's life. She has a pill popping problem and it's not clear it this was the cause of the accident or vise versa.

The creature part of this feature is a spider goddess or avatar of a spider goddess that is out for revenge (though it's unclear what the family has done to deserve it).

Despite being a large spider goddess, it doesn't seem to have any special powers (aside from being able to conviently disappear when necessary).

The film could have focused a lot more on the spider goddess and the mythology and the tribe that worships her, but that's all sadly lacking. Also for a spider goddess, it dies in an awfully normal and easy way.

The fact that the giant spider is done with practical effects is actually one of the good points, meaning we're not treated to a terribly rendered cgi spider.

Sadly I don't think this film will ever become a classic creature feature.
