A head spinning Twist and witty humor reminds us why we love the series
Harun_Karali2 December 2017
Warning: Spoilers
As Season Premieres go, this might have been the best in the series. With Coulson waking up in space and having dozens of questions, but he has no idea he's not even asking the right ones, I love it when there's a twist in a series(especially if it involves time travel). And the looks on there faces is a reflection of the viewers expressions. Fitz being left behind is another reason for them to panic. Knowing Fitz he'll invent time travel before he let's go of Jemma. His story is also an aspect we could explore, how he could potentially find his way back to his friends and Jemma. What separates this from most science fiction isn't just the story, it's the characters. You care what happens to them and that goes to show you, how far good story telling and character development can go. I might be alone in this, but I like the fact that there bringing back the Framework story line, it was the strongest story in the series. It might be a way for Fitz to communicate with the gang(if they can sync the time periods). This is a grossly underrated series if you ask me. Not gonna pretend that it had a great start but season four was on par with the best TV I've seen in years and by the looks of it, this season will be even better.

Fantastic start of the season
namob-436732 December 2017
THIS, this is how create amazing TV. Agents of Shield have been improving every season and by the looks of things the show will take yet another step. I very seldom hand out 10s, only done so for 5 times before from what I remember, but this deserve it!

To me AoS is the best superhero show ever made. There are a couple of DC animated shows that have almost been on this level but for regular TV I can only remember a few episodes of Smallville and the first two season of Arrow that has even come close to the fantastic show that is Agents of Shield.

This episode is almost confusing. I kept saying "what!?" and "What the hella is going on!?" all the time, but in a very, very good way. The episode feels like a great x-files or a Twilight Zone episode, with some Alien thrown in there. The cast is amazing and the sort of clunky feel from the acting/script that existed during the first season, and occasionally later, is now completely gone, the directing great and everything just scream high quality and intelligence.

If you want amazing TV entertainment this is the show for you. AoS is the best Sci-fi since Fringe, best group of characters since Firefly, and the best darn superhero show ever made.

Re-watch thoughts
noorea16 April 2019
This is in my opnion the best season premiere to date, it has a unique tone and atmosphere that I really loved, and it takes the show once again in new and exciting directions, it has some stunning visual effects, which was shocking since the budget for the show was slashed this season, later episodes show the budget cuts limited filming locations, so there is a bit of stifling feeling throughout the season, however they built the story around the agents being stuck in that one place so it worked for me but I understand if it didn't work for others. There is also a ton of humor in the episode which balances really well with the tense and dire situation the agents find themselves in. I also really loved the twist and the way they seeded the clues for it through the episode, I only picked up on them because I've seen it before, this show is subtle and well crafted to a fault!

best season introduction ever
alisontheestallion23 April 2022
Warning: Spoilers
4th time rewatching aos and i just noticed that the specific song choice for enoch's intro (/ the season 5 intro) was this must be the place by talking heads. Taking a closer look at the lyrics,

I feel numb, born with a weak heart .. The less we say about it, the better and then And you love me 'til my heart stops Love me 'til I'm dead

(this is kinda a reach but) i realised that it quite literally hints to coulson's failing heart we learn about mid season.

Also the vibe im getting from this is breaking bad - which introduces us the antagonist / bad person (like walter white) or so we assume .

Even robin's drawings as we know hint to the entire plot of season 5 in literally a couple of seconds.

I am yet to find even more clues but i imagine i will next time i rewatch this fantastic series . Most shows hesitate to add weird clips that at first make no sense, but the writing of agents of shield uses our confusion to build suspense as we then are introduced to the one thing the team, and we witness, outer space and time travel.

And with the adaptability of the concept of outer space and time travel, since it is rarely explored within the beginning episodes as the agents have an instinct and focus on survival - not science - for the first time in the series, we are left with many possibilities. "Is AIDA and her robots still alive? Where is Fitz?" and with the quite bold introduction of enoch, we also question his role to play in the foreseeable future, which we are left in the cold for four episodes until episode 5 where he reveals his true purpose. But since the stigma of robots is strong not only within the team but now the audience after seeing the torture caused by aida we doubt the morality of robots as we're not sure they even have one. Although we're not entirely sure with enoch's sacrifice (as it is literally his purpose to stop extinction and not of his own freewill) we are not as grateful for his sacrifice than we are in season 7 as we fully reflect on the 20 episodes of screen time the character has. And in both instances, the one thing he tried to prevent, which was ultimate death, happened to him. He would always die for his friends (or rather humanity) no matter the circumstance. This antagonist to protagonist contrast, although i dont like it when villains randomly turn heroes, is always interesting for me to watch as i continue to rewatch agents of shield. He was never introduced as a hero or villain. Enoch is simply enoch.

S5 is quite dark & dystopian
cmcwallace-5186325 July 2022
I found this season to be particularly draining to watch. It's dark, dystopian, heavy laden and claustrophobic. Yet always well written with bounds of originality and creativity.

What did you do Marvel?!!!! Warning: Spoilers
I love this show, well I did, up to the end of Season 4 the story arcs, the characters, the twists and turns all first rate, then we get this rubbish. What were you thinking Marvel? Seriously, you took a fantastic show and got cocky with it, sending them to space and fill the season with new characters no one cares about and also changing the well loved characters. Mac especially, why is he all of a sudden so agitated? Never like that before and quite annoying to watch. What is it with characters losing their hands all the time? Just rubbish, you've really annoyed me so far with season 5, I might skip to season 6 as this isn't worth my time, even in lockdown. 3 out of 10, it sucks.

Orientation Part 1
bobcobb3012 December 2017
Warning: Spoilers
I was a little unsure of how this season was going to play out at the beginning, but once we got back to this cast of characters and adjusted to this new world I got on board. Outer space makes for a lot more fun than ghosts, robots or time travel.

Some of the comedy worked, some didn't, but we'll see where things go from here.

Star Trek Territory
willz18710 January 2018
Not into this season. Reminds me of something out of Star Trek. Dorky and depressing. And the lighting is way too dark. I want superhero stuff, not sci-fi realm fantasy grossness. This show is the most up and down show I've ever seen. I'd rather watch another season of Inhumans than keep watching this time-travel, dystopian, awfulness.

I think this episode SPOILED INFINITY WAR and confirmed some rumors about the film
JohnnySlayer1 December 2017
Warning: Spoilers
Yeah, you heard me, I think this episode confirmed what happens after Infinity War and I think it confirms that Tony/Iron Man will travel back in time to save the Avengers in Avengers 4. In the beginning of this episode Coulson and his team wake up in a space station and they discover that it's ran by the Kree. As everyone finds their way back together, they must find a way to leave Kree and get back to earth to Fitz. Anyway after everyone is back together they discovered a wannabe Star-lord. His acting was very cringe- worthy BTW. they figure out that Earth was destroyed by a Cosmic Event a long time ago. (my bet is INFINITY WAR ). Now if it's true, everything will go back to NORMAL after Avengers 4.

Mack's 'reactions' are distractingly painful
sophiejensen-1306314 November 2023
Don't get me wrong, most of the episode is actually pretty cool, especially the scenes with Deke and May but there is something distractingly wrong going on here.

When Mack knocks Virgil unconscious he sarcastically apologizes that he 'saw a dirty-looking dude, standing over you with a creepy looking weapon, I reacted'. If Virgil had a weapon, in wasn't aimed at Coulson. Virgil was dirty but you could tell in 2/10's of a second that he was friendly. And obviously if he had been in any danger Coulson could have taken the guy out no problem so why does Mack say the guy was 'standing over him' at all? These are assumptions, not reactions. You tend to react to things that are actually in front of your face, things that are actually there no matter how you feel about them. Mack doesn't' react, he doesn't' take the time to read a situation, or people. He just goes with whatever he thinks is going on, and follows his own assumptions, how HE feels about people.

Coulson is his normal, patient, dry-witted humor self. Yo-Yo and Simmons play off each-other beautifully. But seriously you could have called this episode 'harbinger' and been closer to the point. As in a Harbinger of bad things to come rather than people getting oriented to thier knew surroundings. Mack's erroneous, sanctimonious attitude will not only put distance between himself and those members of the team he is closest too, it drowns out what virtues, heart and even internal conflict the other characters bring to the table/show. His attitude of 'we won't become like them; we won't lose our humanity' with no sympathy or understanding of the fact that having as much humanity as these people have after living like this for so long is impressive. The only character who professes their Christian faith, other than Yo-Yo, not only doesn't live up to it has judgment on the quickest speed-dial. It's...disturbing actually.

This episode was the beginning of the End.
