Billed as a comedy, it really is not very funny. The quirkiness of the characters is somewhat interesting and the drama is not bad, but the movie is not compelling enough to recommend.

He suffered a childhood trauma and has created a number of alternate personas to live with his grief. All his friends love him and he seems to be the best at his game in everything. But he won't let anyone else in so when she begins to notice him she tries to get him to open up to her. He brings her into his world but he doesn't want to open up to her which eventually pushes her away.
She realises from her friends she chose incorrectly so she tries again.....

As much as I pushed to watch till the end, hoping for an interesting twist.. nothing! The story could unravel differently but it's just weird how the events went and how the characters are forcefully interfering .. and the end is soooooooo predictable and empty.
Not a little love story

The Right One starts off as a quirky little movie. I usually turn 'quirky' off. They are usually such broad humor, not really fun at all and just very irritating. So yes, this movie is quirky but in the best possible way.
It is a very serious movie about the deep psychic pain of a young abuse boy who blames himself for the death of his sister. Sounds depressing right? But nope, it is lighthearted,,at times laugh out loud funny.
I am so jaded by most movies. This is refreshingly deep and well acted. Each character is well crafted and interesting.
Watch it. You won't be sorry.

faking it

Sara (Cleopatra Coleman) is a feminist writer turned trashy romance novelist. Her best friend and agent Kelly (Iliza Shlesinger) is desperate for a new book but Sara is struggling with writer's block. She encounters Godfrey (Nick Thune) randomly in two different places with him portraying two completely different characters. He's a chameleon and a highly successful salesman. He keeps changing his personality and one never knows the real Godfrey. Sara is intrigued.
This movie depends on the audience to empathize with Sara. One needs to see Godfrey as fascinating. Sara's a writer and I can see this as an intriguing exercise. I'm not a writer or an actor. I don't find him fascinating. Right from the start, I saw Godfrey as faking his performance. It takes a long time before he shows his true face. He keeps me at a distance as the audience. I'm just not as invested as Sara for her quest. It also taints the meet-cute. I do like Coleman but this rom-com is not getting me.

Disturbing film about dizzy woman chasing a guy with a mental illness
uberdonkey631 December 2021
Warning: Spoilers
I get that this film is supposed to be in some way sweet, about a caring woman who wants to help a charming guy with a sad past. I liked her acting, though everyone else was mediocre.
In reality, this is about a dizzy and quite stupid woman, working for another woman who is also quite stupid but is supposed to come across as powerful but is simply crass. The dizzy woman falls for the 'mystery' of a man who shows no interest in her, and has a seriously threatening brother. This unusual man runs around doing different jobs, but is clearly self interested and mentally unstable. She pursues him not despite that, but because of it.
Having been in a relationship with someone with a mental disorder, I found what was supposed to be romantic as actually quite disturbing. Despite his lack of interest and his brother's threats, she continues to pursue the guy, who eventually has a break down because he read her diary (as she's using the experience to write a book). I fully expected her to be stabbed to death by the psychotic man. And whilst her friend said he is not schizophrenic because he has no hallucinations, the film clearly shows that he does (scene of abusove parents and young girl).
Of course she brings him out of his stupor, and it ends on a happy note. Possibly the psychosis driven murder will be in the second film.
Trust me, as someone that has tried to help a partner like this, this is not romantic, it is actually very dangerous. People with deep psychosis need professional assistance. Not sure what the writer was thinking and all I can imagine is that she is a bit like the main character: quite dizzy and falls for guys that have mental health issues and probably a risk to her health.
Anyway, production value was good, main actress was actually ok. Guy, brother and boss were annoying. A bit shallow, a bit (unintentionally) disturbing. If you're in a prison cell for murdering your wife over an argument about which bagels taste the nicest, this would probably be a nice feel good movie for you to watch. Otherwise, not great.

Must be the most god-awful movie streaming right now
tomwar-312 June 2023
This must be the worst written and performed movie in many decades. How could the actors in it not know they are in a very bad movie unless they are really bad actors. Ridiculous plot, complete lack of humor, pacing, any semblance of intelligence. I watched for Coleman's incredible lips and fast forwarded thru a lot of this pathetic film. Since the review is still too short and I have nothing positive to say, I will continue to type until I reach the required number of characters , and I still need 100 and if I knew this had to be so long, I wouldn't have started. I can't believe people get funded to make such trash.
It was in there! Just not quite there.

Great story idea. All of the makings of something fun, loving, learning and romantic.
The chemistry seemed a little flat. Not exactly there in my opinion. And from time to time I felt irritated by the sound of one's voice and stupid liners from the delivery of one's script in the movie. Did the purposely do that? Or was it the delivery from one's acting skills?. I don't know how and what to make of it.
The underlying subject is not easy. And to deal with such matters takes skills and understanding in addressing likely trauma.
More exposure from other parties would have likely added more drama and given more picture and emotional expression to this "wanna be better" flick.
Enjoy.

Enjoyed watching it, kind of reminded me of Reign Over Me as far as the main character acting oddly based on a loss of a loved one. But the actors were believable although the main drama was a little unlikely to happen in real life. Who would leave their phone on the table unlocked for anyone to look at?
Don't we all pretend?

Sara is pretty bland as character. At times she was annoying and whiny, and always on her high horse judging people and what they choose. The actress is gorgeous, but the writers didn't write a good character.
Godfrey on the other hand was interesting to explore. He was one man orchestra literally. Being many people at the same time and showing different faces to different people. Perhaps those characters were all personas that other people saw in him and he simply played along with their perception. He was also hiding a deep emotional trauma from his childhood, and probably putting all the personas as layers to hide his wounded inner child. The one nobody cared about. The neglected kid that had nobody to turn to and could not even please his foster parents as an adult bringing them money all the time. This made him turn to hiding his pain and need for love behind characters who were lovable, easy to get along with and not that deep. Sara as annoying as she was, was the first one to peel the layers to find the real person, the real Godfrey. He was afraid to reveal what made him become the way he is, as he still blamed himself for his sister's death and felt this is why he doesn't deserve love. His pain was slowly consuming him, even with all pretense.
I wish the movie wasn't just passing as rom-com and actually explored the unhealed trauma and redemption topics more.

Great example of a misleading rating

This is a strangely beautiful and funny movie to watch, don't let the rating put you off watching it. (not perfect, but it is most definitely great)
I watched this movie without reading critiques, reviews or ratings on it and it blew me away. I'm so used to relying on IMDB ratings to choose what I watch that I trust them blindly, but they can be very misleading. I realize now that watching a movie without external influence (bias) makes the experience purer and more enjoyable.
This movie is rather good. Unusual plot and characters put in a rather familiar environment, picturesque settings, tear jerkers and a lot of fun. Upon reflection I appreciate this movie in the same way I appreciated "The Life of Pi" - an exacerbated or altered story which makes it fun to watch and harsh to reflect upon.
This is a story about the human need for company, be it family, a friend or a lover we all need someone to pull us out of that dark place we go to sometimes. For him the trauma and escapism, for her depression, for me nihilism.

Great quirky take on the age old love story. Lots of humour mixed with a look at some serious psychological scarring. The acting's great witch goes hand in hand with great directing, good scripting, good cinematography, all in all a very enjoyable and enlightening watch. I would highly recommend.
No chemistry!
tina_mk15 October 2021
I could not feel any chemistry between the two main characters, so much so that every conversation they have, seems so unnatural and forced. I gave this movie a 5, just because of the topic of mental issue, but other than that, I wouldn't watch it again.
