One-time watch
Kalidoscope5 January 2019
Story is good..characters played by old actors are fun to watch. There have been quite a few movies trying to capture the old Delhi charm, this movie had done decent job capturing the flavour of old delhi. Main lead is a singer in music band but the songs in movie aren't great. The actor playing the hero hasn't impressed. The actress has acted well. It's a one time watch.

This actress was not good for this script
faisalfaves3 December 2018
This actress Amyra was not good for this script, she has no face feelings, she looks as dull as ditchwater. Rishi Kapoor acted well, The main Actor's acting was average. Just one time watch but skip most of the no-meaning scenes.

A Decent Watcg
saurbhsnha9 June 2021
Characters are well-defined. A twist to the usual story of a boy who doesn't like his middle-class upbringing and fails to appreciate those he is surrounded by. Don't go with huge expectation and you will enjoy yourself. It is not a cheap entertainment, a good investment for our time.

The beauty of a good cinema is the journey and evolution of characters throughout the film, in this film I liked the character arc of not only the protagonist but also of the actress' character. She is good, ofcourse beautiful.

Social media gazettes Old Delhi culture old friends little cheat is ok
dr_hgj-4823124 July 2019
As my title suggests everything is included in the movie a family entertainer and though music songs did not become as popular as anticipated but a sincere descent movie family entertainer which is full of family characters who are modern up dated but won't leave the traditions type. Son is keeping a way to the widowed Rishi Kapoor and is trying to win him back. New type of understanding villain is found in Mr. Khurana played by Ayushyaman's Brother ! Extremely predictable circumstances but as wonderfully smoothed by family atmosphere that one let goes whatever minor is to be overlooked. You will love it more if like the traditional values. A life long bachelor as could not commit to a friends sister ... note that he was Muslim and the girl was a Hindu but for whole life behaved so withheld ed that forget the society but friend also never doubted! We have fake id ideas for fun on social media and its explorations It is not only a Common man mistake prone Rishi but a Lot of other characters too keep the film lively.

Dear Amazon & Netflix, thank you for playing with Indian Nostalgia.
abhiakssingh8 December 2018
I don't usually write reviews. I am a tech manager, whom you certainly can't fool, on how your business model works. But I do like your strategic objective for Indian market.

Somehow, possibly with all the data gathering tools at your disposal, your analytics team knows that most of the guys who can afford your subscription, at a cost more than cable TV subscription, are those who are living in top 200 cities of the world, but are predominantly small towners. Most of your stories, I watch on Netflix or Amazon, take us back to the time when we were coming of age. This is not just my word, it is the word of my colleagues as well. I will have to give due credit here. Your team has cracked that, if you play with our childhood memories, or may be frame your stories around it, then you can get away by selling anything to us.

Rajma Chawal, interesting name though, appears to be just another project in the portfolio. I liked the film. The film is nostalgic, no two words about it. The film subtly answers why, with the advent of Globalisation, the malls (or supermarkets which some in other part of the world might call) came and left, while small shop markets like Chandni Chowk, which are there for more than centuries, are still there and are going to be there in future. Chandni chowk in old Delhi is a 300 years old market, and it is as healthy as it used to be. In India, there are 100s of such Chandni Chowks - Aminabad in Lucknow for one, or Chickpet in Bangalore for two, I can reference here. They all are tacky, filled with filth and tiny streets - but guess what? Our parents still shop from there. We have frequently accompanied our parents in those chaotic noisy streets - wondering why my Mom comes here always? Why do I have to bear the stink of open sewer while she is shopping, or why isn't there a pizza shop around?

Your movie answer the question. Traditional people only do business with those with whom they have relationship. And since these are century old marketplaces - it is ingrained in the minds of the shop owners to build the relationship. That's why, now I know, when my mom used to visit such shops, the shop owner guy would ask about my education or my father's posting. These shop owners have built a relationship - a relationship of trust between buyer and sellers - which goes on for centuries. That's why most of the shops sounds like "Kapoor and Sons" - Which is another way of saying, even if the owner leaves the mortal world, the kids will value the commitment. And this is the trust and relationship - which is sustaining them in ever changing trade dynamics - from malls to online shopping experience.

Do watch this movie - to subtly understand the message. It is not directly told on the face by the makers, but "rather show not tell" thing. Considering the relatively elite crowd, which measures time wasted in traffic over money of theater experience, this is worth the subscription.

MAMI Review: Rajma Chawal (4 Stars)
nairtejas30 October 2018
In Leena Yadav's Rajma Chawal (Rice with Kidney Beans), Rishi Kapoor's character creates a fake account of a random girl on Facebook just so that he can chat with his son (Anirudh Tanwar) who hates his guts. The drama, with shoots of comic relief here and there, feels like a fake embodiment of everything it wants to be. Other than a fresh performance by Amyra Dastur as a woman with a hurtful past, there is nothing else that does not look convoluted. From the pretentious title because the movie is set in the modern day Chandni Chowk to a weak performance by the lead actor to cliched elements; these things take up most of the screen time in Rajma Chawal. You enter the hall and in the first five minutes you know what is going to happen with the characters and how they are going to end up. Blame it on Vivek Anchaliya's formulaic writing but Rajma Chawal felt like not much research was done on the audience and their intelligence. It's a rehash of all those father-son dramas you have seen in Bollywood over the last couple of years and definitely not worth your time. TN.

(Watched and reviewed at its India premiere at the 20th MAMI Mumbai Film Festival.)

possibly the worst title on netflix
vrattan-563971 December 2018
I dont know why netflix is hell bent on producing original content in India using totally alien ideas, alien stories and just transfer them to India context. Horrible story. Completed by horrible acting of lead actors.

Pointless plot
azamsalmas2 December 2018
Warning: Spoilers
The story is absolutely pointless. Just watched it for Amyra, who turns out to be a disastrous actor. Rishi Kapoor's performance is the only good thing about this movie.

It's a feel good film
jetkot3 December 2018
Delhi becomes a character in this film. The people of Delhi are showcased beautifully. The Actors catch the cultural and social nuances perfectly and you have a smile on your face .Anirudh Tanwar is fabulous in his acting debut. Rishi Kapoor never disappoints and after moving to playing father roles , he is doing really well for himself.

Pathetic
gokulaxel17 December 2018
Good that this movie didn't release in Theatre. Netflix should add a new category like 'Pathetic Pointless Worst Movies' and dump worst movies like this there so we can skip those.

India has a lot better to share
snasrin-7307812 September 2019
Warning: Spoilers
Very poor way of showing nationalism by overrating an awful movie. I understandhow different context of this film might make ine nostalgic. On that case, you can walk by an Indian restaurant in abroad and get your daily dose of nostalgia. The story has no realistic value, the main actor has a great poker face (as someone already said). Seriously! People thinking "father flirting with son on facebook" is an amazing idea for a movie disgust me.

Movie is being dragged down by its lead
ankit-iiit27 December 2018
This movie had potential, real potential. There were some funny moments and some possible heartfelt moments. But it was being weight down by extremely weak performance by its lead actor. The supporting actors did a great job. But majority of the screentime was either cringe worthy or just plain flat on the floor.

A delightful gem! Must Watch!
mandloianupama16 December 2018
Rajma Chawal is a sweet, poignant and humorous film about misunderstandings, miscommunication and navigating difficult relationships. A film from the heart for all those who struggle to express their true feelings.

The film maintains a light touch in its narrative with brilliant cinematography and a thoroughly enjoyable music score.

Don't miss this one.

Good story wrong casting
id_ase15 December 2018
The theme was very interesting. Also the story was good to attact me for the whole movie. But, the worse part was casting of hero and heroin. Hero has a very few expression that you can count in the whole movie. I wasn't able to understand his feelings without the dialogue. Got bored in the middle of the movie but keep watching for the ending.

I wish they had casted better actors.

OK storyline but terrible acting
vishakgopalan9 December 2018
The storyline is ok but the weakest part of the movie is the male lead - Anirudh Tanwar - who can't act to save his soul. Poor acting aside, in terms of dialogue delivery I was only able to follow his dialogues because of subtitles as he speaks inside his mouth. Also Rishi Kapoor's character seems to change tune every 15 min, completely inconsistent representation throughout the movie. He is helpless, smart, scheming, dumb, selfish, insensitive, understanding, caring all at the same time. Avoid if you can.
