They got the right actor for Jack
CubsandCulture9 July 2021
This episode shows that that they show cast the right actor for Jack. The writing is not as sparkling as it was in prior seasons-if anything Jack's story initially is very similar to Sam's arch in seasons 2-4. But Calvert manages to be charming, innocent, menacing and unnerving when each tone is called for. Best of all, Calvert just fits with Ackles and Padalecki.

Beloved characters return; Asmodeus, the new would be King of Hell
rjg-3135620 October 2017
Warning: Spoilers
The writers continue the new look and feel to the show with the return of some beloved characters. I laughed at Drexel and his fellow demon lurching around waiting for 'Lord Lucifer' to return to 'make Hell great again, and fell out of my chair laughing when I heard that line! Donatello's back – YAY! I just adore Keith Szarabajka. It's refreshing having Sam take the lead in this season as chief consoler, encourager, and protector. Dean is showing an increasingly short fuse and appears more burned out than ever. It's obvious how much he misses Cas, his Mom, and even Crowley. He's lost motivation and his lashing out is perfectly reflected in Jack reactions, which reveal his powers. He has NOT, however lost a step in his fighting skills. One thing I've always been puzzled about is where on earth are all the other hotel guests during these violent and very noisy fights? The halls are always conspicuously empty. I had mixed feelings about the character Asmodeus and was glad that he disappeared just as fast as he'd appeared. Alexander Calvert does an excellent job showing a personality that is a mixture of angelic oddness combined with the angst of a teen-aged human. So far, he has not shown a shred of evil except when he's manipulated by others. The alternate universe Michael shows up to kick Lucifer's a**, but leaves us wondering why he doesn't kill him out right. Why does he need him?

First time in three years an episode actually gripped me
EmmaAlt22 October 2017
Warning: Spoilers
The Rising Song is the first episode that actually had me on edge since the Season 9 finale three years ago. This was, in every aspect, a really good and gripping episode. And that is exactly what the show so desperately needs nowadays. The last 3 seasons completely failed to impressed me. The writers completely took the excitement out of the show by randomly killing off one character after another just to keep the viewers on edge, which failed immensely. If you don't know how to shape an episode (or a season in that matter) in order to keep the story exciting and fresh, quit your job. Because that is what completely messed up the show over these last three years. Robbie Thompson was the only one, who was able to save some episodes with his genius writing. Which is why I was so genuinely shocked by The Rising Son. This is how every single episode should look like. This is the least of what this show needs. So good job on this episode, guys! You really impressed me and most of the fandom. Jack is the new favorite and finally brings in that fresh air the show so desperately needed. Same goes for Lucifer. Mark is an absolute amazing actor, every scene is on point. I wish I could say the same for Jared though. I know he is an amazing actor, we have all seen it in the earlier seasons. But the writers completely block him from showing his skills in front of the camera by always giving him the same lines that we already heard a hundred times before. But that applies to all recent episodes. Another thing that should really be acknowledged is character development. Which, once again, is being completely ignored. After Benny, Dean changed his views and was much more careful when it comes to monsters, angels and demons. But well, apparently that is forgotten? Dean's views and actions on Jack made absolutely no sense this episode and were far away from his character development that we saw years ago. But besides that, The Rising Son was a really good and thrilling episode that we so desperately need more of. Please keep it up!

Not bad, not exceptional
nightshiftee20 January 2024
Warning: Spoilers
The story can be intriguing and these are going to be interesting last seasons.

Parallel reality - nice addition, not spectacular but has a place, fits in.

Asmodeus - looks like a new regular and am not sure what to think of it. Understandable but doesn't get my attention. The knights of hell seem unnecessary.

Cas, Rowena, Crowley - if they are gone for good then these will be very different last seasons. They certainly gave a lot to the show, will be missed.

Jack - interesting character and perhaps the most promising, lots of potential especially with the new monsters from hell etc.

All in all I'm curious for what's next.

Jack has powers and Apocalypse world
shwetafabm30 July 2020
Warning: Spoilers
They could have made apocalypse world scarier. But its pretty stale. I just don't like Mary, the actress i think is the problem, everything she says has the same tone to it, its too calm and like someone is talking to a toddler. Still think it is cool. I don't quite understand the problem with angels and humans, are they trying to kill them all or something? Also why must this show be so metaphorical, why are the angels dressed like soldiers? Maybe to protect from the bullets... Can we also acknowledge that Balthazar and Raphael could create portals in S6? So Lucifer can't.

The Rising Son Review
alina-loopi12 March 2024
Warning: Spoilers
Mid apocalypse. Mary is running from angel asteroids. She meets another hunter who happens to be a man. Why. WHY. Did the writers decide for him to be a rapist "Ain't never met a female hunter" is not an excuse to rape. I don't understand the point of the rapist. He could have just done nothing to help her or said he was gonna try to kill her because she was new. Would've been the same outcome. What was the need for the man to try to sexually assault her mid apocalypse? Very poor writing and insulting that it is depicted as the norm for men to think it's okay to sexually assault women just because they have not seen a female in a while. Disgusting.
