Distracted by bad sound editing
robin_a-126 September 2019
The movie would have been much better if not for the sound editing which was so poorly done. Most of the dialogue were obviously recorded in studio without any ambient sounds of the location included. So, the dialogues sounded so disconnected from each scene. It's so obviously dubbed over that it sounded flat and without any realistic feel. Movies should be done in such a way that one gets to feel that they are actually there. Scenes with foreigners sounded so dubbed by local voice talents trying to sound foreign. It sounded trying hard at times. The second issue with sound was the soundtrack. It was too loud that it was not adding to the moment, instead it was drowning each moment. It did not help also that a lot of the soundtrack was synthesized. They probably didn't allocate a budget to use real instruments. The synthesized music, especially when it came to the strings came across flat and cheap. Synthesized music lacks any emotional depth. So, you have substandard soundtrack production, then played too loudly, it was like an assault to the ears. Could I say more about the movie, nah, too distracted by the audio. Could have been better.

not that good :/

Warning: Spoilers
I don't know how to start these things out, but i'm not writing a college essay, so

I really don't like how piolo's character takes pictures of yen's character without her consent as well as hitting on her multiple times throughout the film. It was portrayed as "romantic" and "hot", and it made me very uncomfortable. If i were her, i would've been very creeped out by him and probably would've barricaded my airbnb door every night before going to sleep. It's not cute anymore.

The kid's acting could've been better, he's always yelling instead of acting normally and his coughing felt very karen smith from mean girls-esque.

Tw: abuse i don't know if we're supposed to feel any sympathy for yen's mother, but the fact that her mother escaped her abusive husband, started another family in the philippines, then left her family in the philippines to go back to her abusive alaskan husband felt very scummy to me. She never even attempted to communicate with her family in the philippines via facebook or even wrote letters to them. I don't understand why she got very emotional and started acting so dramatic when yen got upset at her after she learned the truth about why her mom left. It's all her fault after all.

The movie was filmed in new zealand in place of alaska. There's nothing wrong with that, but in one of the arial shots, i spotted a car driving on the left side of the road, which broke my immersion quite a bit.

The foreigners in the movie seem to have their voices dubbed over with automated dialogue replacement (ADR). It sounds and looks so unnatural, why couldn't they just have the actors speak with american accents without any dubbing?

Northern Lights: A Journey to Love swerves a bit with a different glow.
guerrierpoeticus2 August 2017
In this age where most "love" can be found infront of a digital gizmo, Northern Lights: A Journey to Love swerves a bit with a different glow.

Filipino families are well known for their bond and strong family ties. The story presents the struggles of children from a broken home.

Charlie Jr., prepared a lot of questions for a father he is meeting for the first time in 9 years where his father, Charlie Sr., was uncomfortable to comment. Another Filipino value interjected was the mindset that children will never understand, or too early for them to understand.

Angel on the other hand, was too convinced that it was not her mother's fault that they ended up without a mom. His father also never mentioned it to them so as not to disparage their mom. Truth can be terminal.

Forgiveness. A lesson that is too difficult devour but simplifies life.
