Bound for Clunker Island
coolwill-9645519 January 2020
Warning: Spoilers
Well, this was a bit more interesting than I thought it would be. Not that it's saying much. Story: Cargo was made to capitalize on the release of Cars 3, since they were both released in 2017 and have similar concepts; car crashes and even a demolition derby thrown in there. I'm not surprised; Asylum's films are very often derivative of others. What isn't similar is just how awkward Cargo can be. A lot of the dialogue consists of bad car puns, some pop culture references, and some lines sound like weird innuendos. One aspect of the story that I want to point out is Clunker Island. When cars are too damaged, they are sent to said island to be dismantled and reused. Imagine if people were forced to essentially become organ donors when they are at retirement age. And this isn't a little throwaway. Instead, it's a major plot element when the main character's father gets wrecked and sent there. I suppose that concept would make for an intriguing horror movie. But are also some antics that serve as little more than filler. They don't advance the plot, like the "spirit of the forest" scene that only exists for comic relief. Despite the dark undertones of Clunker Island, most of the plot is uninteresting, derivative and somewhat embarassing. 2/5 Animation: Whenever Asylum does an animated film, there always seems to be a problem. It's not the worst animation in the world, but it's very low-tier, especially for 2017. Even the Cars movies have expressive animation, which I may get to in a different review. But the only thing expressive about the animation in Cargo is how much it wants to die. Textures glitch out, the nonexistent lip syncing makes anime English dubs look accurate, and while they sometimes implement some decent facial expressions, they are still unable to animate expressive movement. Again, at least the Pixar movies can have their characters move like characters. The closest we have here is the fact that the characters' whole bodies move along with their mouths. The backgrounds probably look even more ugly than the characters. Most of the city of Cargo has less texture than a PS1 game, any nature consists of what look like tree models from the Unity Asset Store or an out of place jpeg, and Clunker Island itself looks like it's made of nothing but badly textured rocks. For 2017, this looks extremely cheap, especially when we already got Zootpia the previous year. 1/5 Characters: Getting this aspect out of the way, many of the characters' names consist of car puns, adding to just how awkward it is. Comparing this to Cars one more time, at least the character names in the Pixar movie are natural. This cast consists of Danny Carbuncle, a rebellious and naive car who has a caring side; there's Cabagail, who serves as a typical love interest and actually seems pretty pointless; Vin Diesel, (Haha, get it??) who's the epitome of peer pressure; and Arthur Carbuncle, the Uncle Ben type character who serves as a mentor to his son. While some characters are a bit more complex, others are one note automobiles, especially the side car-acters. If there is one interesting aspect, it's that the voice acting is surprisingly top notch for a mockbuster. The main character is played by the same man as Sora from the Kingdom Hearts games, and he's joined by Sabrina the Teenage Witch, Jay from Jay and Silent Bob, Santa Claus, and even Hermes Conrad! Despite the awkward scripts, they do their best to sound pleasant and expressive. In one scene, one of the side characters panic upon being told they're going to Clunker Island, and one can really hear the fear in their voice. Sadly, though, not even formidable voice acting can save these characters from being hit with the lame pipe. 2/5 Songs: What's really confusing about this film is the inclusion of musical numbers. I can't recall Cars ever having an original song with lyrics in its soundtrack, so maybe the Asylum was trying to offer something unique, at least? The songs themselves range from awkward to actually kind of catchy with some awkward lines. The songs in the latter category are the intro song and What You Do, which at least have some Broadway level music. There's also Go where The Fun is, played by Jason Mewes, because of course it is. The rest of the songs are baffling, and they may consist of lines like "I wanna begin where you end" or just sound generic. "Where the Autos are" also sounds sounds similar to "Part of Your World" from Little Mermaid. I will give them credit for being original with some of them, at least, but more often than not, they're more flat than a loose hubcap. 2/5 At the end of the day, Cargo is yet another film from Asylum's roster that tried to appeal to fans of an official IP, despite being potentially worse than a Video Brinquedo film. The only aspects that save it from being that bad are the voice acting and a couple catchy tunes. But with the garbage animation and unfocused story, what we have is collection of cars bound for the junkyard of obscurity, coming in at 2 unsettling chop shops out of 5.

You mean it's real?!?
silurhian4 November 2017
When I first saw the trailer on Youtube I was certain that it was merely created as a joke by someone with 3d animation software, good voice talent and way too much time on their hands. Then I saw the movie. It was like a nightmare. I watched the first 1/2 hour with eyes wide and mouth agape in shock before I slipped into a drooling trance of boredom. Kids are going to end up spanking their parents if forced to watch this.

Sad Little Film
thomas-vanmeter1 July 2017
There's little to like about CarGo. My 5 year old and 8 year old grandsons wouldn't even watch with much interest. Haley Joel Osment, Edward Asner, and Melissa Joan Hart's voices added positive to the film.

The script was disjointed, the message was too similar to Cars 3, the songs seemed a rip-off from other film favorites, and the cheesy references to other famous films, like "The Shawshank Redemption", seemed forced and too obvious.

I'd suggest you not waste your money.

I have seen this movie twice, which is two more times than I wanted to see it. Bought it for a dollar, and watched in horror as this trainwreck of a movie unfolded. couldn't force myself to look away

jokes are forced and animation is poor. felt like I was on several drugs when watching. a+ would force a family member to watch with me again

I need bleach
Sussy_Bubby14 October 2021
This movie makes me want to bleach my eyes. The animation is garbage, and the story makes no sense. The only thing this film has going for it is that the voice acting is decent.

Baffling and hilarious
gbartthenerd15 December 2017
You have to be familiar with Asylum to fully appreciate this film. Did they try, but fail in adorable and hilarious ways, or do they know what they're doing? Are they trying to make it look like they aren't trying? The story is compelling and well-paced, the voice acting is great, and there are a lot of details that seem well thought out, but the mouth animation is awful, some scenes look like they were assembled in under 10 minutes with cheap, low-res textures, but they're supposed to. This movie will keep you guessing, and laughing, but you have to know what to expect from Asylum

Good for Little Kids who like Disney Cars
inviso-5942530 October 2019
My 4 yr old loves this movie. Its like Disney Cars but with low budget animation and some more mature family based plotlines. It also has some catchy songs.

I admit I wasnt a fan at first, but it has grown on me, and you can find it for free on vudu and pluto. Give it a shot and dont take it seriously (the creators dont).

My 4 yr old also REALLY wants a CarGo 2

Me and my brother watch this on YouTube. I had to leave the room during this. I would not recommend this for anyone who has more than 1 brain cell. Seriously, Please don't watch this. It will save you some brain cells and your time wasting on by watching it. The animation is so bad, it made me lose some brain cells and my sanity that I need to recover from this train wreak. So please takes this as a little warning. WATCH THIS MOVIE AT YOUR OWN RISK! You'll thank me later for this. So take this opinion with a grain of salt, ok?

That's all that I had to say about this movie. Hope you have a good day.

This is a Pixar rip off
ninypinky16 September 2019
I've been fan of Pixar for a long time and when I saw this movie I knew that it was a copy from Cars.

First of all is voice acting. The voice acting is okay there's no comment in this one what could be bad.

Second is dialogue. Again it's okay but sometimes in the movie it's just awkward .

Third: Editing. At my opinion it's not bad nor good but sometimes it's just slower in frame of movie.

One more thing before I go: laziness. This was made in 2017?! At my opinion I think that the creators of this movie was just lazy. Also I thought that this was made before the original Cars!

Again the movie isn't that bad nor good because of laziness.

This is just a blatant copy of Pixar's Cars
serenityspace20 November 2022
Warning: Spoilers
Yeah, you heard me from Saberspark right? The movie is so terrible that it is a rip-off of Disney Pixar's Cars franchise. Let me just say this straight. Like first of all, the animation is just lazy, and also low quality. And second of all, the acting is just horrible. Third of all, the songs are all boring. And that's all have to say. I had to suffer from watching this. For real, don't watch this one because this movie is just cringeworthy, Just watch Disney Pixar's Cars instead of this horrible rip-off. I am going to rate this a 1 star review. If I ever watch this movie, I'm gonna get triggered big time. Also, the film behind it was the Asylum who makes bad movies.

One for the junkyard
Chase_Witherspoon1 February 2024
The shameless comedy-musical rip-off of 'Cars' is as boring as they come, wasting some genuine talent (Hart, Osment and Asner) chasing an easy payday as it rides the coattails of the better-made original.

It's quite astonishing that a film this blatantly derivative can be released in such close proximity to the source material, especially when you consider the strength of that brand. I can see plenty of unsuspecting punters grabbing this DVD by mistake and I shudder to think the rage those kids would unload on a parent when they discover the ruse. Like when you ask for a Transformer for Christmas, but your clueless parents got you a GoBot by mistake. Except in this case, 'Cars' and 'Cargo' don't leave much margin for error. The whole 3D look, shape, attitude and colours of the automobile characters are very close to the original, albeit on a much smaller budget with inferior graphics and a plot so thin it would wipe away after one rinse.

There's even characters performing weak Peter Lorre and Marlon Brando impersonations - nothing it seems is sacrosanct when there's someone else's patronage to exploit. Nothing to praise here, it's just a lemon pumped full of cooking oil, lurching and spluttering toward an inevitable blowout that will probably make your kids cry.

Made by The Asylum
ajodendahl30 September 2023
Car-Go? Really? That's the laziest name I've ever seen I mean Video Buinquedo's movie names are better than that. I found this movie by looking at Wheely and I gotta say, I hate this the animation is horrible. So never watch this movie it's bad! I looked at this and I went: Nope not today. It's like that thing I found in the dollar store. I would punch this to space literally I'm so mad now. I like the Cars movies! How dare they rip them off! Also it's made by The Asylum which are known for making cheap copies of movies. This is like Izzie's Way Home which was a great movie this is just lazy. I can't I need water help me.

Animation is terrible, but script and voices not bad
edgy-827-48696510 June 2017
I seen tone of chip rip-off, from "Cars" included, and this not so bad like some Chinese piece of "art". Animation pure - yes, but not to awful, and as I say script pretty interesting and there is an actual story line - THIS is important moment, because in many Splash Entertainment and Sony long-going series you don't see a story at all.

Ahaha!
AceGunslinger8 October 2022
Ok people, it's The Asylum. A production company extremely well known for blatantly ripping off AAA movies, how anybody could give this movie a legitimate negative review is beyond me. Of course it's going to be bad, has anybody actually seen an Asylum film and said 'wow that was amazing movie!'? I don't think so. So if you liked Cars, then give your kids a chance to watch this. If they're young enough, they won't be able to tell how bad it is anyway. For anybody going into this film with high expectations, just go watch the Cars Trilogy about 50 more times. For those who go into this going 'man I have to do dishes but keep my kids somewhat entertained', here you go. You're welcome. PS To the people who have actually sent a legitimate negative review for this film, get a life. This review was purely out of spite for those people.
