Deep in the Heart of Texas

Dave Chappelle live must be quite a treat I imagine. Seeing him on stage you can feel he's natural, he's experienced, he's one of the best ever in the genre. The material isn't always good, the premises aren't always fresh but he manages to always makes us laugh with his manneurisms and twists. Not the best comedy special he's done but still very good!

Great Set From Chappelle
ahoricesesdyk28 March 2017
I'm giving this special a 9, not a 10, because I'm leaving Dave room to improve. I honestly can't find flaw with this performance, but watching it made me feel like there's still more to come, and it will be even better. If I give this a 10 and he puts out a better set, what then?

Of the two Netflix sets out so far (this and 'Age of Spin'), I liked this one slightly more, but the difference isn't much. They're both really good.

Without spoiling anything, what you get here is a new Dave Chappelle that retains all the qualities of the old one. His comedy is very much still 'Chappelle' material, whatever that means, but with longer sets he has a chance to make a few statements and show his intelligence as well. Don't worry, though, he doesn't sacrifice laughs to make points or badger you with political views. He simply mixes it up a bit more, uses his time wisely and capitalizes on the opportunity to deliver a much more intimate set than anything he's produced before now.

It's Dave Chappelle as good as ever, back with new material. If IMDb let me, that's all I would have written. If you like great comedy sets, you'll like this.

Great set! Really funny! I was in the audience!
sg0000026 March 2017
This is a really funny set! I was lucky enough to be in the audience when this got recorded, so it is amazing to watch it again a few years later! The picture quality and editing is flawless. I'm hoping to see a lot more sets from Dave's vault get released this way on Netflix eventually.

Fracking iconic.

The king is back, bit@$! So yeah. I just finished watching both specials back to back. There is one special that is good and another that is freaking epic as heck. This is a review for the one that is just okay. I'm still giving it a ten out of ten just to offset the hate but it is more of an eight out of ten type of deal. You'll be laughing and having a good time, you just may not be laughing your a$$ off. I have a feeling this was filmed when Dave first came back after X amount of years. You can tell he was a little rusty and not totally on point. Even though this isn't the greatest performance by Dave, it is still head over heels above anyone currently doing stand up. So yeah, Dave is still the funniest comedian alive. It should be noted that both specials were filmed a year or two ago, which is why some of the jokes feel dated. Dave basically sat on the specials and waited for a paycheck. Genius.

I don't know why people don't like Chappelle specials, they are awesome and this is by far the best yet.

Dave takes us on a ride
SnoopyStyle26 March 2017
This was filmed in Austin, Texas in 2015. The two years delay does leave some of the jokes dated. Paula Deen and Ebola are no longer hot takes. It's a problem that Netflix should watch out for in the future.

Dave Chappelle starts with a bunch of kids throwing a banana peel at him. He's also doing some gay jokes which is always a little awkward. I wouldn't recommend Louis C.K. to concentrate on doing black jokes either. It's always coaxed by him that he has nothing against gays but... It's kinda funny but he's also spending too much time with it.

He gets into personal stuff that's not always that personal. I get a sense that most of it is spun from slivers of truth. Did he get a blackmail tape? Possibly but the comedy embellishments don't feel real. He definitely didn't get two tapes. As usual, he's very funny with the material. There are plenty of laughs as he takes us on a ride but the car is not the newest and it's not a classic either.

Things May Be Bigger in Texas, But Are They As Funny?
Ladies and gentleman, boys and girls, children of all ages, grandmothers and grandfathers, Dave Cha-Pezzy is back, the one and only Dave Chappelle is back!

Dave Chappelle (Half – Baked, The Chappelle Show) the comedy icon, makes his long awaited return to the screen and to the stage. Dave Chappelle now has a Netflix Original stand-up comedy special. With new, mature, raunchy, contemptuous, and always compelling comedy material.

Now if you are coming into this thinking you're getting that Chappelle that says, "I'm Rick James, bitch!" Or him as Lil John, Prince, and as everyone's favorite crackhead Tyrone Biggums, you are not getting that. What you have here is a more mature Chappelle that has grown, and discusses more of his daily life.

That's right Dave Chappelle grew up. He discusses politics, sex, scandals, race issues, kids, the education system, marriage, and all that good stuff. The stand-up special is actually two parts. The first part is titled, The Age of Spin Live at The Hollywood Palladium. The second part is titled, Deep in the Heart of Texas: Dave Chappelle Live at Austin City Limits.

Fans online have been debating which special is better. I believe they are both well done. However, I do believe the first special is better.

I personally enjoyed The Age of Spin Live at The Hollywood Palladium more for a variety of reasons. It really does feel like he is talking to the audience, he hasn't performed in L.A. in 10 years, it is more mature, it's funny, and you truly do feel like he is happy to be back, and happy to have grown as a comedian.

That doesn't mean it is a perfect stand-up special, because in my opinion it is not. One of the biggest issues I have is the topics of current events.

I wish there were more recent news topics Chappelle discussed in his special. For example, he could have made jokes and or statements about Trump, Obama leaving office, movies, trends, television shows (like when he played Negan from Walking Dead on Saturday Night Live), social media, and the entertainment industry then vs. now.

Talking about Bill Cosby and O.J. Simpson now feels just a little dated. Even though the jokes are funny, just more fresher topics could have been used. I appreciate him taking a serious topic and adding a light hearted and funny message behind it though.

The first special is…how can I put this? Stupid funny. He tells a joke about every time he has met O.J. and each one of them is hilarious, but really stupid. For instance, this isn't a spoiler, but it involves Chappelle and O.J.'s wife. Chappelle reenacts when he met O.J.'s wife and he says, "Woman, are you trying' to get us both killed?"

Furthermore, he literally opens the show telling the crowd, "You all better be a tough crowd, I'm going to say some stuff, so don't get mad." So if you are someone who is easily offended this is NOT for you. On the other hand, if you are someone who has thick skin and can take race jokes, sex jokes, and profanity the by all means 'njoy.

What I mainly enjoyed about the 2nd half is Chappelle discussing more of his private life. For example, his young son getting into a fight with girl. Chappelle mentions how he took a bite out of his son's school lunch, and then put it back in the bag so his son wouldn't notice. His son thought it was a girl in the class, and it ended up with his son slapping a little girl. This isn't the first father dilemma Chappelle discusses.

Also, Chappelle discusses his marriage. He has been married since 2001, and he talks about/makes jokes about long marriages and relationships. I was cracking up laughing, when he mentions when his wife leaves the house he likes to get naked, jerk off and eat cereal in the living room.

That's what I mean when I say you are getting more of the old Chappelle on this second half of the stand-up special. In my opinion, this half had too many sex jokes and gay jokes. It started out funny, but then I was ready for him to move onto the next topic.

Overall, these are my final thoughts on Dave Chappelle's stand-up Netflix Special. Netflix announced these aren't the only two specials we are getting. There are more coming on the way towards the end of the year, and I say bring it on.

Chappelle is more than Rick James, bitch. He is funny, has improved, has matured, he is a comedy king, and like Comedy Central has stated, I do believe he is one of the greatest comedians of all time. I believe this earns an…

8 out of 10!

Thank you all for reading and or viewing, and I hope you all have an amazing day as always. :)

Now if you'll excuse me, much like Dave Chappelle, I need to get my bowl of cereal ready and head on into the living room.

Funny but the material is an odd mix of questionable opinion or good ol' simple crudity
bob the moo6 May 2017
This is the first of the Netflix specials that were widely hyped due to it being his 'return'. I've never quite seen him as brilliant as others, so I decided to let all the hype and fuss pass before watching in a few weeks. This first special was actually a year or so ago when it was recorded, and some of the references are dated – an issue for some, but they still worked without being up to the minute fresh. The crowd are good, and Chappelle does seem to enjoy being on stage – and his charisma and timing is evident throughout, and I did laugh quite a lot.

That said, some of his material gave me pause. I know he is a comedian and not a politician, but even with that 'pass' he did seem quite relaxed about his jokes about homosexual stereotypes, and transgender people; when he does African-American jokes it sort of feels more 'okay' simply because he is doing it from within rather than pointing at others. With this material it was not cruel, and it did have an opinion behind it, but it didn't totally sit with me. Likewise, his apparent attack on mandatory vaccinations came out of nowhere. These and a few others made me wonder why I was mostly okay with Chappelle doing this, but with someone else I would not be.

Some of his other material is a bit broad too. Some of it doesn't really fly as a narrative, but then you have others which rely too much on crudity – crudity with wit works when he does it (as he mostly does), but somethings there seems to be less below the surface. A solid and mostly funny special – but the content limited it for me, and I do hope the next special can be stronger.

Half of it was great
backup-503625 October 2019
Half of it was great but then he starts a long boring story about his wife and it's more sad and boring than anything. He did a stupid thing getting married and he knows he's gonna get sliced in half like most men who don't think when it matters. DON'T GET MARRIED!

Either way, the first part of the set is really funny as usual and his stories are interesting. You can't tell what's real and what's a story because he sometimes claims it's a true story but then clearly goes on about something that's heavily embellished.

Regardless, it's a good watch, main problem is this special was almost hidden in Netflix and hard for me to even realize it's there. If I knew this was out I'd watch it two years ago. Why was it set like an episode to another special? Anyways, that's Netflix messing up as usual, unrelated.

Good but a little rusty
Acedonno18 July 2017
I really thought this was filmed in 2017 but apparently this was filmed in 2015. He was sharp and good but a little rusty and a little uncoordinated in some ways.

Needs to work on his stuff. But still way better than any other these comedians these days. He is the best.. Louis CK is good too but no others can touch these two especially Dave.

This was already much better than the New York show. I enjoyed it. Nothing really special, but everything was good.

I must use at least 150 characters...

Warning: Spoilers
Contains a mild spoiler that will give away one joke from his routine. That's all. So consider yourselves warned. ;-)

I liked all of Dave's work pre-meltdown or however you want to call it. This new stuff didn't convince me.

But it's Dave Chappelle, you kinda know what to expect, the man's really witty so let's cut him some slack.

However, he started ranting against doctors and appeared to be on the antivax train and that's f*cking troublesome. He takes some recent facts and spins them to fit that (antivax) narrative. Not cool, man, not cool.

I mean, yes, freedom of speech, and all that! But when you're in a position where people look up to you and you're spitting out fake news sh*t then you probably should fact-check your routine before.

The rest of his stuff was not that great either. Too much weird stuff in the beginning put me off. Luckily he picks up in the second half. But by then it was too late for me.

Yeah it's great, he's done better, but it's still top notch comedy
jeanpirise2 April 2017
It's like level 9000 comedy. He really understands how to deal with white people in society, even though it's really scary to be black in America, l admire that, and l'm really sorry for that, no one deserves to live in fear. There, many people have said so many things about the shows, l just thought l'd talk about this side of Dave's brilliant personality. He looks a lot younger than just "2 years ago", l would have said 7 years ago (2010). His "spin" show was better, he seems more limited in his movement, but he seems to have gained wisdom, he's a lot smarter and more perceptive. This show he's buff and very agile, but his mind seems to be a bit over-smoked...

Brilliant - Dave Chappelle in fine form
grantss3 April 2018
Produced by Netflix, a stand-up routine of the legendary Dave Chappelle, recorded live at the Moody Theatre in Austin in 2015.

Brilliant - Dave Chappelle in fine form. At his peak, in the early 2000s, Dave Chappelle was the funniest man on the planet. His brand of irreverent musings, largely on racial matters, was screamingly funny. Now he's back, and as funny as ever. Clever, funny and delivered in his hilarious over-the-top manner.

he used to be great but he has relied upon the same jokes now for about 10 years and there is nothing "special" about this special. I am sure there are plenty of bad reviews based on his politics but this special just stinks. While he blames the bad reviews on the "alt- right", he should probably be looking in the mirror. I am sure any 10 review is solely based on his political statements not this special.

he used to be funny but this "special" is beyond awful. I was at one point embarrassed for this young lady as it was so unfunny and at times very awkward. he has had shows that were funny but this is not one of those. If you want to watch a good comedy special SKIP this one because that is time you'll never get back!!

unfunny and disgraced
maoroloko20 June 2017
dave needs to rethink his career choice of stand-up comedy and stick with material that somebody else wrote for him. This stand-up is not funny or entertaining at all. There are some comics I really enjoy that can pull off raunchy comedy with a lot of humor. dave was just raunchy to be raunchy and not funny at all. After watching this I felt like Ace Ventura after he found out Einhorn was a man. Had to vomit, burn the clothes I was wearing, try to plunger the show out of my head, and just sat in the shower trying to wash this show away. So bad. So awful. Doesn't even deserve 1 star.

This was the worst stand-up comedy i have ever seen.

I don't even know man who talk like he does, just gross.

The first seven minutes where so awful, i thought about stop watching it but i wanted stay open minded and give her a fair chance since it's the first time i've seen a special from his.

Never again.

Here is a summary of the first 7 minutes:

Im a slut, My penis looks gross, My penis smells bad, I hate guys not wanting to go down on me, Did a guy ever c*m in your mouth ?

Probably the worst stand-up show ever, jokes stolen from other comics, he seems to be getting more bitter and nasty and much less funny, almost like he's a caricature of herself. I don't know which was worse in this show: his in a tight leather dress or his political comments or her describing how gross her private parts are.

This show, routine, special, whatever you want to call it, was just awful though. I mean even in the middle of it he stops for twenty seconds just running the clock out and that wasn't the first time he took the long, long pauses. He even looked like he was tired, struggling and not really into it. The material was lame except for maybe one joke. His dog routine was not funny. The one about his daughter was not funny and the one about Magic Mike was just painful.
