Bringing Christmas to the trolls
TheLittleSongbird23 December 2018
Love animation, always have and always will do. Not just because of giving me pleasure and comfort but also it has been a significant part of my life. Disney, Looney Tunes, Tom and Jerry, Hanna Barbera, Tex Avery, Studio Ghibli, Pixar, Soyuzmultfilm and the list goes on and on.

Found myself surprisingly enjoying 2016's 'Trolls'. Not a masterpiece and far from DreamWorks' best ('The Prince of Egypt' and 'How to Train Your Dragon'), but there was a lot to like and it was so much better than its poor advertising/marketing indicated it would be. Its Christmas special the following year 'Trolls Holiday' is not as good but is close, it is not going to be for all tastebuds and there are better DreamWorks festive specials around. The strengths of the film still remain although the flaws are bigger and there are more.

There isn't really anything new as such conceptually and not a lot done in bringing freshness to it, not to mention that the story is very thin. Do agree that the pace could have slowed down in spots, some of the special is on the too hyper-active side, and that things could have quietened down in some places. Loved the energy, but there were instances where 'Trolls Holiday' did feel too noisy.

Can understand the reservations of it being too sugary and anyone expecting a little tension may want to look elsewhere because the conflict did feel bland here.

On the other hand, the animation in 'Trolls Holiday' is great and true in style to the film. There is so much imaginative detail, the characters are well modelled, the backgrounds meticulous and best of all the colours are gorgeously vibrant and leap out at you from the screen. The soundtrack is again like a musical extravaganza, and an upbeat and infectious one that has a huge presence without being overkill. The final number especially. The script is enough fun and wit to counter-balance the cuteness and sugar.

Again, the energy is exuberant, and personally just couldn't fail to be captivated by the energy, feel-good nature and charm, even if narratively it's not that strong the atmosphere certainly was. The characters were pretty adorable, none of them were annoying and none on the wrong side of sickly sweet. The voice acting all round is fine, never disturbing or too cute, and the singing showing the vocalists attacking the music with gusto and love of music. Anna Kendrick and Justin Timberlake suit their characters perfectly.

Summarising, nice and colourful but didn't have me jumping out of my chair. 6.5/10 Bethany Cox

poppy and acceptable
SnoopyStyle24 November 2018
The Trolls celebrate almost everyday and everything. In Bergen Town, the Bergens celebrate nothing after they stop eating the Trolls. Poppy (Anna Kendrick) is presently the queen of the Trolls. When she discovers that the Bergens don't have a holiday, she intends to introduce the Holiday with Branch (Justin Timberlake)'s help to the Bergens. Bridget is unwilling to accept it.

Trolls is a surprisingly acceptable animated movie. The super poppy songs fit the colorful Trolls and the poptastic voices. Anna Kendrick's hyper-Try-Hard fits really well. This follows that formula to a tee. It would be better if the Holiday is given a name. It might not be a future classic but it's an acceptable extension of the movie. It's poppy and acceptable.

Not exactly memorable, but cute and charming enough
I'll admit, when I saw Trolls on Netflix last year, I thought it would end up being a disappointment, but it turned out to be much better than the trailers. Sure, it didn't do anything new with it's story and the villain was pretty forgettable, but the main leads were likeable enough, the animation was cute, and the songs were good too.

So, when I heard that DreamWorks was going to make a holiday short, I was interested and hoped that it would be as good as the other holiday shorts like Gift of the Night Fury and the Kung Fu Panda Holiday Special. From what I got, it was decent enough and it's cute and charming in places. However, it's not exactly memorable as there are some problems that held Trolls Holiday back.

The story did feel predictable and at times a bit repetitive at parts, although I do admire it's attempt to stick to the holiday theme. Then, there's the pacing, which felt a bit rushed there wasn't enough time to breath and there's one song number that felt quite unnecessary (I'm not going to spoil to those who haven't seen it yet).

That being said, everything else is good. The animation is even more cute, the most of the song numbers are fine, the characters are charming like they were in the movie, and the voice work is spot on with Anna Kendrick and Justin Timberlake continuing to shine with their chemistry. Oh, and there are some funny moments which gave me a chuckle or two.

So, overall, not exactly as strong as Gift of the Night Fury and the Kung Fu Panda Holiday Special, but still cute and charming for kids to see. :)

A forgettable short film
Gordon-1129 December 2017
This short animation film tells the story of the Trolls trying to create another holiday in order to increase happiness.

I really enjoyed the full length "Trolls", but this short is rather contrived and pointless. The plot is very weak, and there is little to engage viewers. Even the nice songs and the vibrant colour palette cannot save it from being a forgettable short film.

A very 'Baby-Sitting' Movie with Adult Jokes
sisubalan9 August 2022
It was okay. Short and simple. Good voice casts. Despite being a family friendly kids eccentric movie, i did get a lot of adult jokes. Its fine, recommended.

This movie was REALLY cringe-inducing..
sporeviews20 December 2017
Warning: Spoilers
Trolls Holiday special was very cringe-inducing. Just like it's predecessor Trolls, it's not up to Dreamworks standards in the slightest, which have been renowned for having good stories, excellent writing with witty comedy, and quiet, touching moments, with amazing music.

The story starts with the Bergens who have cancelled Trollstice, so they don't have any holidays, to look forward to. So the Trolls gang decide to travel to Bergen Town to give the citizens a new holiday.

My problems with Trolls Holiday, is that barely anything happens, there is NO fret or tension, and it's just a painful, boring experience when the creators are trying too hard to be hip, cool and relevant to today's generation. There is too much dialogue, and not enough quiet moments; plus the storyline is moving too quickly. The song, Poppy and Branch sings, is nothing but loud noises, gibberish lyrics and constant rapping.

There are signs of sloppy writing throughout the episode; This is demonstrated by the character Branch, because he turned happy in Trolls, but in this episode, he is back to being grey with no reason. Even if you aren't going to do continuity, you must be at least CONSISTENT with your story.

I liked Anna Kendrick, and Justin Timberlake's performances, as they are both very accomplished singers and actors. While the special isn't really colourful, in the trolls village, the visuals really shine, from the textures to the felt. And I liked the final song number; It was very catchy and upbeat.

Overall I did not like the episode as it doesn't have it's own style; It's not cute, it's rarely colourful, and it's NOT charming in the slightest.

It might seem unreasonable for me to care about the quality in kids media like this, but Dreamworks themselves have proven to make AMAZING movies from time to time, like The prince of Egypt, or spirit, that can appeal to both kids and adults. Besides, adults shouldn't have to torture themselves watching this with their kids. As long as Pixar was the game-changer to making timeless movies, people are ALWAYS going to hold animated movies to a high standard.

3 C's: Cute, Colorful and Charming!
huggibear6 December 2017
I have watched this TV animated cartoon twice, once on its premier night (24 November) and again last night (5 December) and both times, it wasn't any longer than 25/30 min. IMDb website says it is 1 hour 12 min. Definitely not that long. But so eye-popping in color! I enjoyed this holiday cartoon so much, I had to get more by watching it twice. I would highly recommend it! But then again, I'm into the pastel and neon colors. And I'm also into DreamWorks Animated films.

Cheap copy of the original, don't bother
mbthedude9 December 2017
The Trolls movie was enjoyable to watch even as an adult sitting in with the kids it had some amusing parts and worked for the whole family.

Trolls Holiday is a short piece of cash in marketing riding on the back of its predecessor. There is 1 scene that is expanded into 20 odd minutes of song after song, and annoying repetition.

Massively disappointing

Enjoyed it to, total time because another HOME special included
bainf9 December 2017
The length is your typical 22/ 24 minutes but it has another Christmas movie tacked on. It has a low budget cartoon version of the characters of HOME discovering Christmas "Home For the Holidays" taking the total time to just over the hour mark. Didn't watch as HOME the animation was annoying after the quality and peppiness of trolls special

Inferior to the movie, lost in music
Horst_In_Translation9 December 2017
Warning: Spoilers
"Trolls Holiday" is a 25-minute animated short film from very recently ago this year (2017) and this is a little add-on for the Christmas holidays that follows the successful 2016 Trolls full feature film. That one was nominated for an Oscar last year and this short sequel here also got a pretty nice deal of awards recognition already, mostly at the Annie Awards, the animation Oscars if you want to call them like that. The cast includes many names that voice-acted also on the full feature film, so it is really an impressive list of people for the most part. But still, I cannot really share the praise here. This under half an hour loses itself repeatedly in mostly forgettable music numbers and songs that stopped the film from developing a story line and plot that stays memorable whatsoever. It felt very disrupting to me. Plus I felt that the male trolls were totally underrepresented here, even if that female troll girl is definitely kinda charming and entertaining to watch. So overall, it is a work that you can simply here as an audio piece. Or better don't because the songs do so little. The animation was as good as I expected, but the story was never touching, relevant or at least interesting. It could have been if this was 25 minutes with just one song or so, but not the way they actually went for. Quite disappointing how much of a letdown this ended up to be. The already green-lit Trolls full feature film sequel will hopefully be better again. Please make it so. Final side-note to this one here: Director Joel Crawford will be the man in charge of the upcoming Croods sequel.

Cute
caroline_rose17 November 2021
Okay, obviously this wasn't Citizen Kane/Paddington 2 but this was really cute! Probably my favorite part was when they had the refrence to the old troll designs from the 1980s. Also, I KNEW i recognized Zoey Deeschanel (Bridget) but I couldn't put my finger on it. A bit too much modern pop music (it is Trolls, after all) and Anna Kendrick's voice is pretty annoying (specifically her Poppy Voice not her actual voice) but it's cute. Show it to your kids around the holiday season, 20 minutes to yourself.

Trolls Holiday NOT a Seasonal Holiday and the bonus extras are no bonus!
scubafiend13 December 2019
So first, Trolls Holiday is not about Christmas or any other seasonal holiday. It is ok, but disappointing if you are expecting something else. At least the animation on Trolls Holiday is decent.

However, packaged with it (at least on Vudu) are 3 "bonus" episodes - two from the film HOME and one from the CROODS. But don't get excited - these "bonus" episodes are no bonus. The animation doesn't even stand up to Saturday morning cartoons and the requisite laugh tracks are just terrible as are the stories. Just sad. I was expecting the caliber of the films, and this is not it. Very disappointing!
