Put Ilana Glazer in a comedy set in New York City and we’ll be sat, no questions asked. For “Babes,” Glazer teamed up to co-write, produce, and star in Pamela Adlon‘s feature directorial debut, a laugh-out-loud coming-of-age buddy comedy following life-long best friends (Glazer and Michelle Buteau) as they navigate different phases of adulthood through the lens of pregnancy. IndieWire caught up with the team and stars behind the film at its New York City premiere on Tuesday, May 14.
Glazer, who co-wrote the film with “Broad City” alum Josh Rabinowitz, reflected on how their creative relationship has evolved since Glazer started comedy at 19 years old and Rabinowitz was just getting out of college. “Growing in comedy with Josh has been such a privilege,” Glazer told IndieWire. “I [was] a few years in and we were just knuckleheads together, like absolute knuckleheads. Mother of the Bride unwittingly tells you everything you need to know about it right at the opening logos: the expected Netflix logo and one for the Motion Picture Corporation of America, a company I’ve never heard of that apparently specializes in low-budget comedies, such as Dumb and Dumber, the A Christmas Prince and The Princess Switch franchises, and Irish Wish earlier this year.
Even without knowing their filmography, I would still say this logo tells you everything about the film before it starts because “Motion Picture Corporation of America” sounds like the most generic name for a movie studio ever and Mother of the Bride is unfortunately about as generic a romantic comedy as you can get, aside from a handful of key details that honestly make it worse.

Steve Albini, a singer and guitarist best known for producing some of the most groundbreaking and influential albums of the alt-rock genre, died of a heart attack at his Chicago recording studio Electrical Audio. He was 61.
Albini’s death and cause of death was confirmed by Taylor Hales of Electrical Audio.
Born July 22, 1962, in Pasadena, Albini moved to the Chicago area after high school to study journalism at Northwestern University. While there, he began writing for local punk rock ‘zines and beginning to record and engineer albums for local bands.
Stubbornly opposed to the larger music industry and its exploitation of artists, Albini formed the Chicago-based band Big Black in 1981, recording the first of several albums, an EP for the Chicago label Ruthless Records, a label he co-managed. That band last until 1987.
From 1987 to 1988, Albini sang and played guitar for Rapeman, named after a Japanese comic book. The short-lived band broke up after one album,...

Kristen Wiig hosting “Saturday Night Live” this week is definitely something to look forward to.
And something to look backward at a bit as well.
Given how many indelible characters Wiig created in her seven seasons on the show (she departed in 2012) there’s a good chance that we’ll see at least one of them pop back up Saturday night.
But then again, maybe not. Familiar characters are not as much of a regular feature on the show anymore.
Sure, this season has seen a handful of returning characters and sketches: Garrett from Hinge, Lisa from Temecula, Santa’s Workshop, and Cinema Classics have all reappeared. We’ve also seen a few loose re-interpretations of past sketches–the social media game show “Why’d You Like It” was brought back as “Why’d You Say it,” and Big Dumb Hats was re-imagined as Big Dumb Cups.
Arguably the season...

Is Vanderpump Rules’ infamous bar, Schwartz & Sandy’s closing down after just two years of being open? It appears that this is the word going around town. So, what is actually being said about the restaurant bar owned by Tom Sandoval and Tom Schwartz? Read on for more details.
Vpr Bar Schwartz & Sandy’s Closing After Just 2 Years?
Tom Sandoval and Tom Schwartz were so excited to branch off from TomTom and have their own bar. They shared this in Season 9 with Lisa Vanderpump and had found a partner to work with. Unfortunately, there was a lot of tension and things were being held up. That caused a lot of money to be spent and it took forever for their bar, Schwartz & Sandy’s to finally open. It, in some ways, cost Schwartz his marriage to Katie Maloney who endlessly butted heads with Sandoval. She not only hated the name...

After a bit of a career detour to win a couple Oscars, filmmaker Peter Farrelly is back with his first full-fledged comedy in a decade: Ricky Stanicky, starring Zac Efron and John Cena.
Now available to stream on Prime Video, the Amazon comedy follows Dean (Efron) and two lifelong friends (Jermaine Fowler and Andrew Santino) who invent an imaginary pal named Ricky Stanicky to blame for their various hijinks. When their romantic partners finally want to meet him, the buddies hire a struggling actor known as “Rock Hard” Rod (Cena) to become Ricky.
Ricky Stanicky returns Farrelly to the ribald comedy genre, which he and brother Bobby Farrelly became synonymous with in the 1990s, thanks to hits like Dumb and Dumber and There’s Something About Mary. Their most recent co-directing effort was 2014’s sequel, Dumb and Dumber To. Peter Farrelly has stayed busy as a solo director, helming 2018’s Green Book,...

Amber Rose recently interviewed astrophysicist Neil deGrasse Tyson on her podcast and triggered a hilarious response from the scientist with a pseudoscience question. Rose chose to ask one astrology question to Tyson of all people, who literally lost it at the mention of it. While the scientific community backed Tyson in his funny outburst, the astrology supporters in the comments were pretty disappointed in him.
Neil deGrasse Tyson in a conversation with Bill Moyers on the latter’s show
Amber Rose asked Tyson whether he believed in concepts like Mercury in retrograde, which the astrologers believe influences the moods of people. Tyson was quick to dismiss it, even drawing an analogy that would perfectly explain the pseudoscience behind it.

While any time is a good time to watch a comedy, springtime and laughs can go hand-in-hand. With warmer weather (and summer blockbusters) around the corner, spend your March with Netflix’s best comedy movies.
‘Beverly Hills Ninja’ Coming to Netflix March 1
Celebrate comedy legend Chris Farley by streaming Beverly Hills Ninja on Netflix beginning March 1. The 1997 martial arts comedy marks the final film released during Farley’s lifetime, as the actor died less than a year after its release.
Farley stars as Haru, adopted as a child by a clan of ninjas who believe he’ll become the master promised in legends. As expected, Haru never entirely becomes a ninja despite his best efforts.

Emmy and Golden Globe winner Julia Garner has set her next role, signing on to star in Leigh Whannell’s “Wolf Man.”
The movie reunites Garner — playing a mother whose family is being terrorized by a lethal predator — with Christopher Abbott, with whom she starred in 2011’s “Martha, Marcy, May, Marlene,” her first professional acting role.
Since then, Garner has gone on to become a major player in both film and television, winning three Emmy awards for her standout performance as Ruth Langmore in “Ozark,” and garnering multiple nominations for her portrayal of real-life con artist Anna Delvey in Shonda Rhimes’ limited series “Inventing Anna.”
In film, Garner earned an Independent Spirit Award nomination for her impressive lead turn in Kitty Green’s “The Assistant.” Last year, the pair teamed up again for another critically acclaimed feature, “The Royal Hotel,” which Garner also produced through her Alma Margo production banner.

This did not stop the studios from trying their hardest to churn them out, leaving movie fans with only one solution: forget the sequel exists. It’s a useful technique, but, ironically, it doesn’t work on the worst films. We can say to each other, for example, that Highlander II: The Quickening never happened all we want. In our broken, battered souls though, we know it exists. And it sucks so much. The memory endures, like a cinematic kidney stone.
Trying to forget works best on sequels so middling, or cynically shoveled out that there’s not much for our memories to grab on to. If we do remember them, it’s with a befuddled “how the hell did that happen?” or a “they got A-list actors for that?” kind of awe. And then we forget about them again.

A new deluxe reissue of Nirvana’s In Utero, is out today (October 27th) to coincide with the album’s 30th anniversary.
The original In Utero arrived after Nirvana had already become global superstars, and is thematically characterized by the band’s discomfort with their status, particularly from frontman, Kurt Cobain. Celebrating it on the occasion of its 25th anniversary in 2018, Consequence contributor Ryan Bray praised the album as “arguably the truest representation of what Nirvana was: a massive act with the principles and integrity of one half its size… It’s a difficult but ironclad document of artistic bravery.”
Now, the album is being honored in a whole new fashion. Among the 53 unreleased tracks are two full In Utero-era concerts, including the band’s final performance in Seattle, as well as six bonus live tracks recorded at various shows around the same time. Additionally, the album’s original tracklist,...

NFL tight end Travis Kelce and Taylor Swift are the talk of the town thanks to their alleged relationship. We certainly didn’t anticipate Swift dating a football player after her long-term relationship with Joe Alwyn, but we’re here for it. One thing is sure: Kylie Kelce, Travis’ sister-in-law, didn’t set up the Kansas City Chiefs star with Swift. Here’s what she said about Travis Kelce’s dating life.

Dumb Money, a 2023 American biographical comedy-drama film directed by Craig Gillespie and written by Lauren Schuker Blum and Rebecca Angelo, failed to make wonders in the box office despite having good audience and critics reviews. The film, which is based on the 2021 book The Antisocial Network by Ben Mezrich and chronicles the GameStop short squeeze of January 2021, flopped with a cumulative gross of around $7.3 million against the $30 million budget.
As of now, Dumb Money has not been released in India. The India release will be on October 13, which is National Cinema Day, and as part of it, the movie will be screened for 99 rupeesin the opening day, which is a very good deal. Previously film was planned to released in October 20.

In January 2021, Dumb Money producer Aaron Ryder was in the midst of a mandatory two-week quarantine in Montreal, and to pass the time, he began to track the ever-evolving situation with GameStop’s stock. The struggling video game retailer became the apple of the internet’s eye, as Redditors on the WallStreetBets subreddit and YouTube investors like Keith Gill’s Roaring Kitty (portrayed by Paul Dano in Dumb Money) were leading the Gme stock short squeeze in an effort to give hedge fund short sellers a taste of their own medicine.
Around the same time, Ryder’s company, Ryder Picture Company, had just launched and entered into a first-look deal with MGM, and as all this drama was still unfolding with GameStop’s soaring stock, the Oscar nominee became a part of the deal for author Ben Mezrich’s GameStop-related book proposal that would later become The Antisocial Network. Exclusive: The GameStop short squeeze drama Dumb Money premiered at the Toronto Film Festival before hitting theaters tomorrow through Sony Pictures. I, Tonya and Lars and the Real Girl helmer Craig Gillespie directed with Paul Dano playing Keith Gill, whose impassioned YouTube stock tip on the retail store for hardcore gamers drew a rabid following during the pandemic, and would up making a multimillionaire of Gill and bankrupting a major hedge fund. Shailene Woodley, Pete Davidson, Seth Rogen, Vincent D’Onofrio, Nick Offerman, Sebastian Stan and America Ferrera round out the cast of the Black Bear-funded film that Lauren Schuker Blum & Rebecca Angelo adapted from Ben Mezrich’s book The Anti-Social Network.

Sony Pictures’ “Dumb Money” could be the most frightening horror movie this year, and the Oscars would be smart to embrace it. From the critically acclaimed director Craig Gillespie, his smart and at times tragic look at the GameStop stock story of 2021 entertained the audiences of the Toronto Film Festival on Friday night where it held its world premiere.
TIFF CEO Cameron Bailey introduced the film and Gillespie brought up his fellow producers Aaron Ryder and Teddy Schwarzman, along with EPs and writers Lauren Schuker Blum and Rebecca Angelo, who sported the film’s title on each of their purses.

The main driver and heroic gamer of Sony’s “Gran Turismo” is Jann Mardenborough, who did indeed level up “From Gamer to Racer,” as the movie’s poster tagline teases. But in this overly polished retelling of this true story, the biggest hero is actually a Nissan executive here named Danny Moore (played by Orlando Bloom), who wanted to prove that “Gran Turismo” is such a great product that it’s like the real thing.

“The Cable Guy is Not a horror movie,” you think to yourself while considering verbally punching me in the throat in the comments section below. You’re correct. But also, imagine this: If an unhinged, uber manipulative, obsessive, attention deprived stranger, with deep seeded mother abandonment issues, that you mistakenly let into your home and life began stalking you; turned your friends, family and girlfriend against you; had you arrested for crimes you didn’t commit; set up hidden cameras in your apartment; had you fired from your job; talked dirty to your mother; stalked and assaulted your ex’s new boyfriend in a men’s bathroom at a public restaurant and eventually kidnapped your ex with a stapler (exhale) all in the matter of a few days…
Wouldn’t that be… horrific?

El Muerto, the Spider-Man spinoff starring Bad Bunny, is well, muerto. At least for the time being.
The feature project, which had Jonás Cuarón, the son of filmmaker Alfonso Cuarón, in the director’s chair, was slated for a Jan. 12, 2024, release date, but Sony announced Wednesday that it had taken the title off its release schedule.
Muerto was to have been the first live-action Marvel project to star a Latino character. El Muerto is an antihero and the son of a luchador, or Mexican wrestler.
The project had not even started shooting, so making that date would have been either a race or a non-starter. Sources say the project fell victim to the ongoing writers strike; the script needed additional work as of mid-spring, but services could not be rendered in time.

In the 1990’s, Jim Carrey was one of the biggest comedy stars in the world, starring in several hit blockbuster comedies including The Mask, two Ace Ventura films, Liar Liar and Dumb and Dumber. But Carrey wanted to do something much different than he had ever done. In 1998, he took on a dramatic role in the critically acclaimed drama, The Truman Show. The film earned three Academy Award nominations along with many other accolades. The Truman Show was a sharp turn for Carrey, in which he played a man who didn’t know that his entire life was actually a reality show being shown all over the world. The film was directed by Oscar nominated director Peter Weir, whose previously directed films, including Witness, The Year of Living Dangerously and Green Card, were well received from critics and fans alike. Carrey loved the challenging role and working with Weir, which...

If you liked “The Social Network” but would have liked it more if every character was an idiot, then “Dumb Money” is here to scratch that itch. Director Craig Gillespie and star Paul Dano showed up at CinemaCon to provide a look at the first few minutes of the film.
Based on the book “The Antisocial Network: The GameStop Short Squeeze and the Ragtag Group of Amateur Traders That Brought Wall Street to Its Knees” by Ben Mezrich, the movie is based on the GameStop stock manipulation that turned a bunch of Redditors into internet folk heroes (for five minutes).

It’s likely not a project we’ll be covering much here on Bloody Disgusting, but Deadline reports today that Jack Black is reteaming with the Farrelly Brothers for a Christmas comedy titled Dear Santa, and the plot synopsis notably hints at some sinister horror elements.
Coming soon from Paramount, “The movie centers on a young boy, who in writing his yearly note to Santa, mixes up the letters and sends it to Satan instead.”
At the very least, we’ll be keeping our eyes on this one…
Robert Timothy Smith, Keegan-Michael Key, Brianne Howey, Hayes MacArthur, Pj Byrne, Jaden Carson Baker, Kai Cech and Austin Post will star alongside Jack Black.
Deadline notes in their report this afternoon, “The current working draft is by the Farrelly Brothers and Ricky Blitt, with the original idea from Dan Ewen.”

Plot: A down-and-out former coach (Woody Harrelson) slapped with a DUI is sentenced to coach a group of intellectually disabled basketball players.
Review: Champions marks Bobby Farrelly’s first solo outing as a director and his first theatrical feature since 2014’s Dumb and Dumber To. Like his brother Peter, in his solo debut, Bobby’s opted to branch out beyond the madcap vein the duo was known for in their heyday, directing a big-hearted comedy-drama that entertains from start to finish.
It helps that Farrelly’s put together a great cast, led by his former Kingpin leading man Woody Harrelson. The actor has always been able to walk a fine line between comedy and drama, and he’s ideally cast in this remake of the 2018 Spanish film of the same name. Stop me if you’ve heard this one before. An irascible, down-on-his-luck coach is reluctantly put in charge of a ragtag team of misfits who can barely play the game. Although he can hardly disguise his initial disgust, the players’ enthusiastic attitudes and general lovability soften him up until he becomes not just their coach but also their most ardent cheerleader. In the process, he becomes a better person.
That’s the Bad News Bears-style template for the latest cinematic variation on the subject, starring Woody Harrelson in a role he was seemingly born to play. You don’t need to have seen the 2018 Spanish hit comedy Campeones, which won multiple Goya Awards including Best Film, to think that its American remake, Champions, feels overly familiar. But that doesn’t make this sure-to-be crowd-pleaser any less winning, especially with the endlessly likable Harrelson at its center.

What’s your favorite scary movie?
Nah, that’s too trite.
What horror movie would you show to someone who has never seen one before?
You may have the same answer to both questions, but the latter requires a bit more thought. John Carpenter’s Halloween is my favorite movie, but I recognize it most likely would not hold up under the scrutiny of a viewer who’s used to flashy modern cinema.
Instead, I would show them Wes Craven’s Scream.
I know what you’re thinking: wouldn’t Scream‘s meta references be lost on a viewer unfamiliar with the trappings of the genre? But one of the many brilliant aspects of Kevin Williamson’s script is how it brazenly draws attention to the tropes before turning them on their head. The meta approach also gives the film a timeless quality, despite it otherwise being very much of-the-moment circa 1996. Sure,...
