Liked it more than I thought I would!
Rob133129 September 2022
I just finished Season 1 of Heels and came away pretty impressed. It's a show that's absolutely worth watching. I came into the show already a fan of both Stephen Amell & Alexander Ludwig but this show made even a bigger fan. They both do an incredible job here as does the supporting cast. Those two play two brothers in a Georgia community that own, run and participate in an independent wrestling company. It shows the rivalry between the brothers both in the ring and in their regular lives as they try to grow the company. I already knew about the wrestling world and how independent organizations struggle to keep up but you don't have to be a fan of wrestling to enjoy this show. The writing is just as good as the acting as it will pull you in from the very first episode. I can't wait for another season.

Great show, shame on you Starz
matthewawallace1 October 2023
I hate that Starz canceled this show on a cliffhanger, so if you like a complete storyline don't start heels like I did. I loved the two seasons and I don't know what show to compare it to maybe Kingdom and the movie fighting with my family. I really hope another Network like Netflix or Prime picks this show up and gives it the two or three more seasons it deserves. Alof of people don't have Starz, if it was on Netflix it would be a really popular hit show guaranteed. Someone please let Amell and company compete this show, I mean Netflix did it for Manifest but they blew that one big time.....

Stephen Amell & Alexander Ludwig carry the show!
Supermanfan-1327 October 2021
Being a fan of of both Stephen Amell (Arrow) and Alexander Ludwig (Vikings) I was looking to this ever since I first heard about it. Well this show not only met my expectations but surpassed them. I'm also a fan of wrestling, not a die hard fan like some other people reviewing here, but still a fan. Even though it's probably more enjoyable if you know you're wrestling, you don't have to be a fan to like this show. It's good regardless if you're a wrestling fan or not. Both Amell and Ludwig are excellent in this. They've both come a long way as actors and really show their talent here. I'm glad to hear this did well enough to her renewed for another season.

Cancelling Starz
dmccall7772 October 2023
I can't believe that you cancelled Heels. What a great show with great stories and great characters. Not to mention that you left it on a stone cold cliffhanger!! WTF?? You have so many shows that are just unbelievable and have nothing to do with the human contact between each other and then you cancel one of the only shows that has that. They say that they are looking for another home for the show. Wherever it ends up I will be subscribing. It's just too good not to get the chance to continue. Heels was the only reason I kept my Starz account. I guess that's about to end. Way to go Starz, you keep the junk and cancel the worthy.

Not a wresting fan, but wow this is good!
April-Jo15 August 2021
I grew up with my dad and brother watching wresting, but I never really paid much attention to it. Heels starts strong and draw you in right away. I don't think you need to be a wresting fan to enjoy this. Ultimately, this is the story of rivalry between two brothers and anyone that has siblings can understand to that.

You already know it's gonna be a winner the way the first episode ends. It's a lot more than wrestling and the showmanship behind it. The leads are gonna make this show very very entertaining but also have a lot of depth too. Looking forward to the rest of the series!

Sensational

Stephen Amell really shines as the conflicted champion/owner of the family wrestling business.

The entire cast is stellar.

It really reminds me of Friday Night Lights just with wrestling. If the series continues to hold up on the quality of the pilot episode, it might reach the heights of the show it resembles.

Highly recommend!

Season 1 review
destroyerwod14 October 2021
I enjoy Wrestling fairly in general and knowing both main actors from Arrow and Vikings it was a no brainer to watch the show. I was surprised to see this has only 8 episodes tough, wich in my opinion is a low count, i would had expected 10 at least but oh well.

Overall i taught it was a good show, and everybody played well their part. The story had some flaw especially when it comes to how they deal the wrestling aspect (the action itself is well done) but it didn't bother me too much. The show is set in the current time but seem to somewhat stick to old tropes of the 80s wrestling. For instance the character of Crystal who wants to be a wrestler but everybody sees her as just a vallet.

Ultimately tough after having watched season 1, i am very curious to see where they will go with Season 2. At the moment of writing this, it was not renew yet so i really hope it does, because there is potential with this show.

Impressive
RJBrez19 September 2021
I was unsure this show would work. I'm a wrestling fan, and I know how hard it is to portray the art form, and those who perform it. But this show continues to surprise me week after week. I loved Amell as Oliver Queen on Arrow, and some of his other work. He is perfect in this role and he carries it well but I expected that. What has surprised me is the talent of the surrounding cast, especially the women. Alison Luff, Mary McCormick, and Kelli Berglund are killing it on a weekly basis. There have been some awesome cameo performances that wrestling fans will appreciate and even former NFL star James Harrison is solid and entertaining. My favorite character is Wild Bill, who is played by the great Chris Bauer. The Wire fans will remember him as Frank Sobotka. I just remember him for always being a top notch talent, whatever the role. These great performances are aided by some solid storylines that will keep you invested in the show and the characters.

My only complaints would be the character of Ace Spade, played by Alexander Ludwig, and the awful opening credits and the song that goes with it. Other than that, I thoroughly enjoy this show. I hope it gets another season.

Different, Held my interest
johnh226 September 2021
Drama about a brothers that run and participate in a pro wrestling venue in small town Georgia. I have never seen anything like it before, so it gets points for originality at the very least.

Grades:

Acting: C+ One actress has a noticeably bad southern accent, but most of the actors do a good enough job to sell the story.

Story: B- Good pace, action, and even romantic subplots. One can find flaws if you look for them, but something about this story it held my interest.

Production: B The show looks pretty good to me, no unrealistic sets or bad camera work that I noticed.

Bottom Line: You don't need to have an interest in pro wrestling to be entertained.

PROS: Stephen Amell and unique plot angle compared to other current shows.

CONS: Sloooow pacing, weak dialogue, strained southern accents, depressing soundtrack.

WTF - Why is this cancelled!
ruffrog18 February 2024
Two of the greatest 2 season tragedies in television. Your Honor and Heels.

This show isn't just for wrestling fans, it opens the door to the sport with a witty script and characters you will invest in. Real life situations are depicted in Heels which are a painful reminder of what grass root wrestling organisations go through. The fighting siblings, the washed up wrestler making a return, defecting wrestlers, promoters at loggerheads, the ascension of women in wrestling. The show has it all and you will be glued especially if you are a wrestling fan. You even went back to watch old matches just to compare.

Kelli Berglund is amazing in the role and it's evident she has trained her socks off to be authentic

This show is well done and truly an honor to the sport. It needs to be picked up by another network if Starz don't realise what they have.

Great show - of course cancelled:( all of my shows are now canceled
superman-3151426 September 2023
I hate starz for canceling this - it was my last show that was not cancelled - everything is canceled - why are you making shows if you cancel everything after one or two seasons -cancel cancelled cancel. What do you need to do to keep a show going past two seasons because great reviews get them canceled - 8+ ratings are now canceled. I don't even watch a lot of dramas, but this was a great show that kept my attention the entire time and coming from someone with similar emotional experiences as the show it was tastefully done it was nice to get some one else's way of dealing with hard situations - I wasn't surprised this was canceled only because every network is canceling every show that is good. SMH.

An absolutely riveting genre drama...
drenstere1 October 2023
...that hopefully won't be a true casualty of the SAG-AFTRA strike. Following shooting and entering post-production, the actors and other workers were forbidden from plugging the second season of this show; they couldn't even mention it in public at all. No promotional materials, banners, nothing. The only reason I got it at all was because my DVR was already set to record the show when the new season (2) was released, and as I do when I get a show, I get all the episodes and binge-watch on my off-time. Friday night: Season one (again) then Saturday night with season two. I then went to see when production work was going to begin with season three and got the bad news (for now). Doesn't change my opinion of the show at all. All members of the cast and crew should be proud of the job they've done here. Absolutely riveting drama. Like, turn off the phone riveting. All kinds of nods to historical happenings within the wrestling business, and stuffed full of immense pockets of humanity itself (along with a very real overarching plot-line that is constantly revisited in the parental advisory) all tell an incredibly dense story that has an excellent chance to appeal to audiences well outside the genre. I usually cap pieces that I know might be limited by the genre, despite how good they were, but not this one. This one needs to be bingewatched in two days, then honored by calling STARZ and asking them what the hell is wrong with their suits that they'd cancel it. Unless STARZ wants to be another AMC that is, and in that case screw them. This show is too good for them anyway. I hope to see Heels Season Three on some network someday or perhaps on Amazon or Netflix of they want to put in a chunk of change on a sure thing.

Edit: I encourage the reviewers who gave this show a low rating to watch both seasons if they didn't understand something, the plot wasn't moving along fast for them or somehow something wasn't accurate in their eyes.

Facts: some A-list wrestling talent contributed to both storyline and on-screen to make this a great series. This series was stymied by the strike and gag orders which were beyond their control. My genuine opinions are above this paragraph and my summation below: this show is EXCELLENT. I don't give such praise likely.

STONE COLD ENTERTAINMENT
sammiguel-6475510 October 2023
I am not a wrestling fan but this show Is quite frankly One of the best shows out there. To learn it is being cancelled is a shock as it is really that freaking good.

Opening up the world of wrestling to fans of what it could really be like in the background, what it takes to be a wrestler and for the families it affects.

Stephen Amell and the cast really deliver a unique offering to the world that captivates the audience and leaves them wanting more.

In a world that always requires a face and a heel, the art form the cast delivers makes you flip flop the same way with their "real life" characters outside of the ring whilst also presenting very entertaining arcs that makes you want to watch more.

I really hope that this gets picked up and quickly the writers and actors deserve it.

Way better than expected
BandSAboutMovies19 February 2022
Warning: Spoilers
Full disclosure: I've been a professional wrestler for nearly 27 years, so I'm going to be somewhat tough on this show, because I have a unique insight into its realism.

I'm excited that it exists -- it's not a cheap wrestling cash-in, as its executive produced by Emmy nominee Mike O'Malley and Academy Award nominee Julie Yorn, plus it boasts a solid cast.

Heels is about the Duffy Wrestling League, which is owned by the son of its creator, Jack Spade (Stephen Amell, who was on Arrow* and has actually competed in several matches; he broke his back -- literally -- doing stunts for this series). Jack has the worst job in wrestling, as he not only owns the promotion, but is its main writer/booker, which means that everyone intensely loves and hates him, often at the same time.

The small building that they run every week may seem small to some, but I spent the better part of a decade or more working for a family-owned promotion not unlike the one in this movie, one that had very much its own family drama. Not exactly like this show, mind you, but the bonds of family and who got the push toward fame and those upset by it? I've lived that.

Ace Space (Alexander Ludwig), Jack's brother, starts the series as a face, the exact opposite of a heel. If you don't know, a heel is the antagonist and the face is the hero. What the series gets right is that most career heels tend to be amongst the finer people you meet in wrestling and there's a very interesting reason why: generally, the heel is more concerned with putting the match together and making the babyface look good. Most babyfaces are only concerned with looking good. This division between them goes beyond the ring and into life, so I can tell you with some authority that the majority of babyfaces I've met are heels in real life and vice versa.

Meanwhile, the other wrestlers in DWF struggle in their wrestling careers, like Crystal Tyler (Kelli Berglund, who is great on this show), a valet who dreams of more. There's also Rooster Robbins (Allen Maldonado), who dreams of the main event; Apocalypse (Pittsburgh Steeler James Harrison) who conducts AA meetings in the ring during the week; BIg Jim Kitchen (Duke Davis Roberts), who is retiring; Bobby Pin (Trey Tucker), a young wrestler from Texas who loves ranch dressing and might just be a big kid and the masked Diego Cottonmouth (Robby Ramos). The way the boys interact with one another rings quite true again and feels pretty authentic.

The series sets up the battle between what Jack sees as right and what Ace wants and how family life -- Jack's wife Staci (Alison Luff) and son Thomas (Roxton Garcia) are often last in line after wrestling -- suffers when the drug that is the ring is calling.

Speaking of drugs, perhaps the most realized and realistic character is Wild Bill Hancock (Chris Bauer, The Machine from 8MM), who feels like every former star facing his own decline that I've ever met. Bauer is an incredible actor, able to convey not only the emotional and physical turmoil that Hancock deals with on a daily basis, but also gets across his danger and ability to use heat in every situation, a person who is constantly working everyone, including himself. He's fascinating in that he's a villain -- he left Duffy and tag partner Tom Spade (David James Elliott, that dude your grandmother used to remember what sexy was on J*A*G*), Jack and Ace's father, behind. He's also someone trying -- not always -- to change who he is, particularly with backstage producer Willie Day (Mary McCormack, always incredible).

There are a few missteps. For all the attention given to Rooster and his complaints about being lost in the shuffle, his character suffers the same fate in this show. Alice Barrett Mitchell does a good job of playing Jack and Ace's mother Carol, but she doesn't seem like someone who spent their life around wrestling, unless the creators were looking for a parallel to Stu Hart's wife Helen. And for all the wrestlers that seem so realistic, CM Punk's portrayal of Ricky Rabies feels as if he's playing a character from a horrible wrestling movie like Ready to Rumble. He seems jokey and inauthentic in every appearance. That said, Bonnie Summerville, who plays his valet Vicky, has a great moment with Crystal. And Mick Foley's Dick Valentino needs to come back and be explored more; he's based on Marc Maron and really pushes the idea that Jack needs to deal with the suicide of his father.

The other character that feels cartoony in this more realistic world is Florida Wrestling Dystopia** owner Charlie Gully (O'Malley, who once hosted Nickoldeon's Guts and is the main showrunner for this series in addition to being the executive producer). He's kind of a mix of Rob Black and Paul Heyman, but he comes off like David Cross running a hardcore promotion full of the worst stereotypes that people think of when they imagine independent wrestling.

With scripts by series creator Michael Waldron (the lead writer of the Loki series), Bradley Paul (Better Call Saul), Rodney Barnes (The Boondocks and several comic books), Daria Polatin (Castle Rock), Rachel Sydney Alter (The Society), Eli Jorné (the creator of Son of Zorn) and Eric Martin (Loki) and all the episodes directed by Peter Segal (Tommy Boy, Grudge Match, Get Smart, 50 First Dates) the show feels and looks great.

My major issue -- and honestly, I expected to dislike this show and actually really enjoyed it -- is that no promotion that I've worked for on the level of DWF has complete scripts or production at this level. Having headsets on all the referees? Man, that seems really fancy. Most places I've worked at did things as silly as having someone take off their hat in the balcony when time was up.

Finallin y, most places that I've worked, if Ace did what he did to Bobby -- never mind that Jack nearly did the same thing to him -- he'd end up getting a receipt sooner of later.

I'm really interested to see where the series goes from here. It was recently renewed and Variety shared a quote by Jeffrey Hirsch, president and CEO of Starz: "It's clear from the critical and fan acclaim that the stories and characters from the Duffy Wrestling League have made a connection with audiences bringing a community that is not often found to premium TV. I'm excited for our amazing cast and executive producers to get back into the ring together for a second season."

There's no date announced as of yet, other than nearly everyone on the show is coming back, with Tucker (Bobby Pin) and Ramos (Diego Cottonmouth) have become series regulars.

I'm really excited that this entire series is out on DVD, as it allowed me to watch the show in several focused sittings. Here's hoping season 2 delves more into Jack realizing that wrestling is always better when it's called in the ring.

*Just like Arrow, Amell's character has to deal with the gun-related suicide of his father.

**I laugh every time they show footage of FWD -- which is the inverted evil DWF, a neat writing trick -- because it's old TNA matches.

Intriguing
perrys062923 September 2023
As a lifelong wrestling fan, I really did enjoy the backstory and how they intertwined the "real life" stories with the "wrestling" stories. Far too many people look down on wrestling and a joke or fake but it really is a great relfection of life and society. Incorporating the family dynamics into the wrestling part of the show was done extremely well and truly sticks to the heart of actual wrestling. The actors did an absolutely great job getting the move sets down and goes above and beyond what a lot of actors need to do to make you believe. The one problem with the show is Mary McCormack. Not only is she just a terrible actress, but the way she plays her role makes it even worse. Anothet waste of a role, but knowing who she is friends with in real life explains her awfulness.

Genuinely amazed this has been cancelled and will not get a 3rd season. Due to lack of viewers..

It's on a channel no one has on a subscription platform no one uses.

If this was put onto Netflix it would be one of the most popular shows on there imo

Story is great, even if you dislike wrestling it has so much more story wise going on, very much son's of anarchy vibes with the way it is produced and filmed.

Nothing is shock value all of the storylines make sense from each person's perspective and you never find yourself thinking this is just out of context for that character.

Totally blown away that it's been cancelled due to being on a nothing channel.

Fingers crossed another platform picks this up.

Indie Wrestling Fans, Rejoice
tyree_hoffman18 April 2023
Since early childhood, I've been a fan of wrestling. And since I was born, raised, and still live in the Southern United States (North Carolina to be exact), I've always been a fan of independent wrestling. Heels is a very fine example of the workings of a local independent wrestling organization, including a lot of things that happen behind the scenes (I know this because one of my best friends is not only an independent wrestler, but was also the stunt double for Diego Cottonmouth in this series). This show has a little of everything for fans; there's drama, action, a little comedy, and just overall consistent entertainment.

I'm not saying that this show will be anyone's favorite television show, but it's definitely worth watching and I'm looking forward to season 2.

Soap opera in disguise.

Church, trucks, country music, pies on the windowsill, the places you used to go when you were hunting as a kid, hiding the hard liquor in the sock drawer...this show is just a rural America-themed boyish soap opera with wrestling as its manly hook.
