Nintendo was the big winner of this year’s Gamescom, the international video game conference that wrapped up in Cologne, Germany, on Sunday. Nintendo Switch game The Legend of Zelda: Tears of the Kingdom picked up multiple awards, including for best gameplay, best audio and the honor of most epic title at this year’s event.
Already one of the highest-rated games of the year, the latest edition of the popular Zelda adventure franchise has drawn raves for its stunning visuals, open-world architecture and creative gameplay. It was easily the pick of the batch at Gamescom 2023.
Other Gamescom standouts include the action role-playing game Black Myth: Wukong from Game Science Interactive Technology, which took the best visuals honor; fighting title Mortal Kombat 1 won the best Xbox Game title; and that game company’s Sky: Children of the Light took the prize for the best mobile game award.

The tale of “Jack Ryan” has come to an end. For now, at least.
With the launch of “Tom Clancy’s Jack Ryan” Season 4, John Krasinski’s time as an espionage hero is over, but he goes out with a bang in the six-episode final season. Krasinski and Co. shot the final season back-to-back with Season 3 of the globe-trotting series, knocking out the international shoot in one big go.
For his final adventure, Jack Ryan roots out corruption within the CIA, but as he starts digging he finds an even darker secret. His final mission puts him in contact with Michael Peña’s Ding Chavez and reunites him with familiar faces like Jim Greer (Wendell Pierce) and Mike November (Michael Kelly) – and one shocking return as well.
But in contrast to previous seasons that dropped all their episodes at once, “Jack Ryan” Season 4 is getting a weekly rollout – with a twist.

A previously unknown game called Black Myth: Wukong has just become one of the most talked-about games in the world thanks to a stunning 13-minute gameplay trailer that showcases the project’s promise.
Let’s start with a little backstory. Black Myth is being developed by a Chinese game studio called Game Science. Founded by a group of former Tencent employees, the team was inspired to pursue a project of this size when they saw how successful Triple-a games on Steam were among gamers in China. In fact, some are describing this game as one of China’s first significant Triple-a efforts.
The game’s budget is evident in the trailer which is highlighted by some stunning visuals, animations, and pure technological concepts. You could certainly argue that there’s nothing here that we strictly haven’t seen before, but the fluidity of the game’s action combined with the...

Contemporary Chinese Cinema is a column devoted to exploring contemporary Chinese-language cinema primarily as it is revealed to us at North American multiplexes.Over the last few years it has become increasingly easy to see mainstream Asian films in North America at the same time they are released in their home countries. Thanks to partnerships with small, international distributors, the major multiplex chains (AMC, Cinemark, Regal) have devoted a handful of screens in major markets to showing new releases from India, Korea, China, Hong Kong and Taiwan. Most of these titles fall under the radar of both critics and audiences outside the diasporic communities to which they are targeted. They play for a week or two and then disappear, outside of a handful of breakout titles. Last year Stephen Chow’s The Mermaid made headlines for its high per-screen averages in North America as it shattered domestic box office records in China.

Not content to simply run hot and cold, Hong Kong director Derek Kwok plays fast and loose with the Chinese legend Journey to the West in his latest, Wu Kong, which runs more like scalding and icy. Careening wildly from visually boggling to tired and stilted, Kwok's (Gallants) adaptation of Jin Hezai’s popular web novel Wukong Zhuan — an origin story at its core — is clearly an allegory about state oppression, identity and self-determination. Sadly though, he and his army of writers forget to keep the fantasy action moving and write characters deeper than sketches. Following the relative fluffiness...

In just four days since its release, Wu Kong which was directed by Hong Kong’s acclaimed director Derek Kwok is now the first local film to dominate the box office since the season of Lunar New Year in February. More than half of the total movie tickets sold between Thursday and Sunday was said to come from the film. This totals to $53 million in revenue in less than a week.
However, the film actually had a slight mishap beforehand as its shortened, unfinished version was leaked on file sharing websites a day before its set premiere date. Due to the incident, critics are still expecting that the film will only make around $100 million.
