Last Chance for a Season 6 Redemption
ThomasDrufke12 May 2018
After the debacle of last week, "The ties that bind" was a slight pick up for the show, even if it double downed on some of the retcons this show has done over the last few weeks. As much as it frustrates me that both teams are now back to normal and all of the previous conflicts have been brushed off, at least it's over. They never truly found a way to resolve that conflict properly, but I guess giving it a definitive ending was the right move to make.

As generic as Diaz has been, it was a cool way to start off the episode by having his men attack each member of the team in their respective homes/locations. He still comes off as a guy who can't really do much without double crossing or catching someone by surprise. He just doesn't pose a physical threat, and we saw a clear representation of that when he fought Ollie a few weeks ago. Also, unless I'm missing something, why would Diaz have an entire flash drive/device with all of the corrupt law enforcement in the city on it? It just seems like a plot device that is simply there to give the heroes an out at the end of the season.

The episode ends with Ollie meeting up with Agent Watson pleading for her help in taking down Diaz, and it seems as though he has officially given up his identity to her (off the record). What could possibly be her second request? One would think it would related to coming out as the Green Arrow to the public, but after last week, that seems less and less likely.

Every now and then this show delivers a beyond-expectations episode, this was one of those.

It's a wild time in Star City tonight!

Is it just me, or has season six of Arrow gone by too quickly? Maybe the fact that the better half was forgettable, but I'm still very sad that there are and will be so many waisted opportunities. Kirk Acevedo's Ricardo Diaz is one. We really go to see how unchained he could be if things went south for him and his rage induced killings all but added up. That's one of the "waisted opportunity" for sure, Diaz was extremely under-utilised this season and we never really go to fully enjoy him. The show also seemed to spend its budget a bit more, with the opening action scenes being as chaotic as ever and the later fights towards the end weren't too shabby either. What stuck out a bit was Oliver (Stephen Amell) and Felicity (Emily Bett Rickards) having couple issues again. That would be season four material, but at least the writers handled the drama well enough for it not be overwhelming and Felicity's comical moments during firefights sure elevated an otherwise darker episode. Another thing that was a little bugging was the fact that by the end, there seems to be no huge end-game put into motion and that most of Team Arrow came out of Diaz's ruthless attacks unscathed. Team Arrow is also whole again and with all their snarky comments out of the way, it is good to see Green Arrow have a proper team again. All issues aside, Arrow delivered a bombastic and cleverly assembled chapter in "The Ties That Bind", and its finale looks pretty darn epic.

Gets worse, every episode!

William: "EEeeek! Dad! There's an eggshell in my egg!"

Felicity gives Ollie the stink-eye for wanting to put the planet's deadliest poison, salt, on his eggs.

AYFKM?! The writers have really painted themselves in a corner with that guy! Place your bets; Gets shipped off to Aunt Tilly, gets killed, joins his dad *not* stopping the bad guys lol!

The story is so predictable, too. Just another series where too much of the audience have low demands from them, and let them (writers) get away with lazy scripts. All they're doing is taking previous season's plots and repeating them, again and again.

AWESOME that there's only one more episode of this series that's been in a coma for the past three years.

One of the better episodes of a lackluster season
Anonnamus22 January 2020
Warning: Spoilers
Any episode that is focused more on action and story progression as opposed to relationship drama (the little that did happen was resolved somewhat quickly) rates it a standout in what has probably been the worst season so far. Newly Reunited Team Green Arrow is now homeless due to Diaz laying siege on both bunkers.

Pros:

  • Who doesn't like to see stuff blow up? Also, the fight scenes weren't terrible.
  • Anatoly again coming through for Oliver. I love this man and I prefer him to be an ally so that we could hopefully see him as a series regular soon.
  • Team Green Arrow is together again with zero of the bickering and passive-aggressive comments that divided them in every prior episode this season.
  • That montage when everyone on TGA was pretty much attacked simultaneously. A nail-biter for sure!

Cons:

  • Forced tension between Oliver and Felicity for a ridiculous reason. Just stop with Olicity drama.
  • No Quentin this episode. One of my favorite characters, he's been seriously under utilized the past couple of seasons. With Thea gone, Quentin is pretty much the sole voice of reason and level head. Lately I have had this uneasy feeling they seem to be building up to a not-so-happy ending for him, and I truly hope what I suspected was foreshadowing was anything but. Unfortunately, I feel like Quentin isn't going to last much longer...probably going out by saving Laurel's life and dying in the process. I hope I'm wrong.
  • I love the actor that plays Ricardo Diaz. I do NOT like Ricardo Diaz. He's slow and entirely too thug-like to make a believable Big Bad and the fact that so many people seem to be alone with him and not once has anyone ever attempted to really kill him (I mean, come on Laurel. You were obviously naked and alone in bed with him. It never occurred to you that might be the best time to "scream" in his ear?) I don't think Diaz is methodical and a dangerous threat, I think everyone else in Star City are idiots.
  • I do believe every single citizen of Star City has been shot with an arrow except for Ricardo Diaz. Oliver can shoot 50 bad guys with one pull of his bow, yet Diaz has been in his sights numerous times with no one around but he NEVER just shoots him. Why do his underlings all get arrows and bullets, but he just gets demands to stand down? GTFO.

I will be happy to see this season end and to go on to the next one because I have been completely over the events that have unfolded thus far. This episode was a season standout, but that isn't saying much.

How stupid do the writers think we are?

Warning: Spoilers
The Arrow had plenty of time to kill Diaz when he was bent over Rene. But instead he runs away. It only takes a second to shoot an arrow.

A meh episode
jbistiz20 May 2018
Warning: Spoilers
The beginning of the episode where Diaz is attacking everybody was great, but beyond that was meh. The worst parts of the episode was everything that Felicity did. And of course they made Oliver apologize. In his apology he said I should have trusted you to keep yourself safe., If he would've done that, then Felicity would've been shot in the back of the head by Diaz. So no, he did not need to apologize for not trusting her to keep herself safe in those situations, because she can't. Felicity was clearly in the wrong as she nearly got herself killed, and Oliver could have gotten killed too, since he was distracted trying to protect her. This is just one of the main reasons why this episode was so bad, because stuff like that is just terribly written, just to try to make Felicity look like a better, and stronger character than she really is. In reality, she is a terrible character that brings down the show, especially in this episode, and episodes where she acts like this.
