To best enjoy the new Apple TV+ series “Dickinson,” you need to disabuse yourself of the notion that it has anything to do with posthumous poetry goddess and all-around depressive Emily Dickinson. That’s the only way you’ll be able to wrap your head around the anachronistic half-hour comedy from Alena Smith, dedicated to rebranding the poet as a rebellious #teen who never met a rule she couldn’t break.
Unfortunately, the pilot episode of the half-hour comedy, “Because I could not stop,” works hard to prevent that disassociation in its audience. There are heavy-handed Dickinson references, where Emily (Hailee Steinfeld) literally meets with Death, and stanzas of her poems are scrawled across the screen as she writes. These touches emphasize the eponymous historical figure, but work at cross-purposes with making the show, well, good.
As it progresses, “Dickinson” becomes more self-assured and less dependent on the legacy of its heroine.

We visited the set of Doctor Sleep, the sequel to The Shining, and got a look at the movie's version of the Overlook Hotel!
A funeral procession passes us on the left, as we ride a shuttle to Blackhall Studios in Atlanta, the soundstages where Doctor Sleep, the sequel to The Shining, is being filmed. We drive through a long, wooded road, decrepit houses begging to be demolished on either side of us. They look like haunted places, shells of the past that refuse to die. Much like the Overlook Hotel itself, as we'll soon find out.
When we arrive, we're quickly ushered into Stage 7. Nothing else is filming at Blackhall at the moment, according to our driver, who reveals that the Dwayne Johnson-starring Jungle Cruise has recently wrapped. Doctor Sleep has the soundstages to itself, day 39 of a 50-day shoot. Walking through its gaping mouth,...

Leading light of television, #MeToo age to write and direct action tale.
In a startling move that radically transforms the profile of its long-gestating sword and sorcery tentpole Red Sonja, Avi Lerner’s Millennium Media has brought on Transparent creator Jill Soloway after the Bryan Singer exited the project.

Here come the Men in Black, but not the ones that you remember. F. Gary Gray’s “Men in Black: International,” a sequel/spin-off to the blockbuster franchise about human bureaucrats managing interstellar immigration services on Earth, has a whole new cast, a whole new style — and no new ideas.
Barry Sonnenfeld’s original 1997 adaptation of the Malibu Comics series “Men in Black” was one of the most unexpected blockbusters of the 1990s. Half the movie was straightforward exposition, but it was funny exposition so nobody cared. Eccentric and clever, and steadfastly refusing to indulge in an action sequence whenever a quirky conversation would do, the film was a rare beacon of wit in a wasteland of otherwise brainless spectacles.
But after two sequels, the “Men in Black” franchise never quite evolved. What started out as a pointed metaphor for America as a melting pot of disparate cultures became a...

The season finale of RuPaul’s Drag Race Season 11 has finally come and gone. While we won’t go into the epic upsets (and disappointing) lip-synchs for the coveted crown between the four competing drag queens — Silky Nutmeg Ganache, Brook Lynn Hytes, Yvie Oddly and A’Keria C. Davenport — there was more than one surprise. And we don’t just mean when Yvie revealing the words “Free Britney!” written on her underwear during her onstage acrobatics to Rihanna’s “Sos.”

Katy Perry is giving the people what they want. The singer is back and better than ever with her new single, "Never Really Over," nearly two years after the release of her album Witness. Gone is the edgy persona that she birthed during her Witness era and in it's place is a floral, hippie-esque Katy with flowing red hair. Like the song, Katy's new look and overall vibe truly speaks volumes to the growth she's experienced since the widely-panned release of Witness. Last year, she revealed that she suffered "situational depression" because the " public didn't react in the way I had expected to." Now, the 34-year-old is singing about...

Before HBO aired the series finale of “Game of Thrones” Sunday night, it bombarded us with a bunch of trailers and promos to remind us, “Hey, we’ve got other shows too!” One of those trailers probably had you thinking in its first minute, “Hmm, this new Aaron Paul show looks interesting. I’ll watch it,” before you realized, “Holy sh–! I do watch this Aaron Paul show!” That’s because this Aaron Paul show is “Westworld,” and that Season 3 teaser is here to tell us that this ain’t our grandma’s “Westworld” anymore.
Backed by Pink Floyd‘s “Brain Damage,” the new footage reveals a whole new (west)world in Season 3. Gone is the robo-Western fantasy park of the first two seasons; here now is a more conventional futuristic, tech-savvy setting, still populated with robots. Plus, Sad Aaron Paul searching for purpose, meaning, “something, someone real,” you know the drill.

Arri Media International has boarded WunderWerk’s animated family film “The Ogglies,” based on the hit German children’s book series about a group of creatures with unusual eating habits looking for a new home.
Helmed by Jens Møller, whose credits include the “Lego Star Wars” TV series, and Toby Genkel, director of animated hit “Ooops! Noah is Gone,” “The Ogglies” follows a family of green, smelly, garbage-eating yet good-natured little beings who find a new home in a city dump, only to face eviction when an unscrupulous contractor decides to build a wellness temple on the site.
Arri Media will present a teaser of the 3D CGI-animated pic for the first time at the upcoming Cannes Film Market.
Erhard Dietl’s book series, which includes 34 titles, has been translated into more than 13 different languages and sold more than 5 million copies in Germany alone.

We’ve all had that moment of genius, usually while getting stuck on TCM, when the brilliant idea reveals itself to us: This film really deserves a remake, an update stripped of archaic notions or bad hair and polished to a shiny modern sheen. Some movies all but demand it. Tootsie isn’t one. Sydney Pollack’s 1982 film starring Dustin Hoffman seems so perfectly of its time – right down to the blissful ignorance of its unexamined mansplaining – that any fiddling would seem as unnecessary as spray tan on a president.
You’ll have just enough time during the false-start opening moments of director Scott Ellis’ wonderful new Tootsie to ponder such things, and then the musical and its star Santino Fontana grab hold and don’t let go. It’s not without a few runs in its stockings, but this Tootsie is a delight, a not-quite-blind date that plays out...

The Thor franchise gets a new lease of life thanks to Taika Waititi, who gives the God of Thunder his best McU showcase yet
This article contains spoilers for Thor: Ragnarok and the wider McU.
"Life is about growth; it's about change..."
With Phase Three of the Marvel Cinematic Universe in full swing, having already introduced a couple of major new characters and raised the stakes for the Earth-bound Avengers (in Captain America: Civil War), it was time for the Mighty Thor's third big-screen outing. It's fair to say, though, that the God of Thunder was in need of a bit of a rethink after his largely soulless second adventure, The Dark World. As Chris Hemsworth's Asgardian hero tells his up-to-his-old-tricks brother Loki (Tom Hiddleston), sometimes a change can do you good...
The man tasked by Marvel with leading that change was Taika Waititi. And change things he did.

Happy! leans even further into the depravity fans know and love it for, but at what cost to the story?
This Happy! review contains no spoilers.
When Syfy decided to transform Grant Morrison’s Happy! comic book series into a TV show, many were understandably taken aback. Not because of the graph novel’s intensely violent and crude subject matter (which the first season unabashedly dove head-first into), but for the length. The limited series ran for only four issues. The first season of Happy!, meanwhile, consisted of eight hour-long episodes. How the hell does that work?
Depending on who you ask, it either does or doesn’t. But Syfy and the show’s fans were happy enough with the result, which is why Happy! is back for a second season consisting of yet another eight episodes. This time, however, Morrison, executive producer and director Brian Taylor, writer and associate...

“Don’t Judge a Book by Its Cover” is a proverb whose simple existence proves the fact impressionable souls will do so without fail. This monthly column focuses on the film industry’s willingness to capitalize on this truth, releasing one-sheets to serve as not representations of what audiences are to expect, but as propaganda to fill seats. Oftentimes they fail miserably.

In adapting Chelsea Cain’s novel “One Kick” into an episodic drama, Matt Lopez had a tall order on his hands.
The protagonist of the book, Kit “Kick” Lannigan is a survivor of a childhood abduction and child pornography ring, who, despite never fully healing from her formative years’ trauma, works with the FBI as an adult to help solve present-day missing persons cases. The 12-episode series Lopez titled “Gone” was co-produced by an American entity (NBCUniversal) and an international one (France’s TF1), which meant adhering to different decency standards when it came to how much violence against children could be shown on-screen. But Lopez also wanted to build the story out to focus more on Kick’s present-day cases, with the larger mystery of the network behind Kick’s abduction to be a season-long arc. The balancing act for the show became not only about when to unravel more of the longer arc,...

The Mule, directed by Clint Eastwood, is the actors first foray back into the world of acting since his supporting role in the release of Trouble with the Curve in 2012. The acting legends turn as 90-year-old Korean War veteran Earl Stone is a welcome return to the craft as an actor; and as a director as he puts forth a terrifically compelling picture full of tension, charisma and heart that feels as if it was plucked straight out of the directors 1970s filmography.
Gone is the excessive and highbrow level of narrative or production method often found in Eastwood’s latest directorial exploits in The 15:17 to Paris, Sully and American Sniper. In its wake, and terrifically executed for that matter,...

When the announcement was first made that Jordan Peele of Get Out fame was producing a “spiritual sequel” to Bernard Rose’s 1992 horror film Candyman, the question was soon raised of whether or not Tony Todd would reprise his role as the titular killer, with many fans finding it hard to picture anyone else in the part. But going by an illustration in the 1985 semiprozine Fantasy Tales, even Todd’s version was quite a departure from the character’s first print appearance.
In a two-page spread for “The Forbidden,” the short story written by Clive Barker that would eventually form the basis for the Candyman film, we see artwork from John Stewart that suggests a much hairier beast than the relatively well-groomed fellow that Rose’s movie would bring us. Gone is the famous fir-trimmed coat, as this character stands naked like the wild animal he is, while looking in serious need of a shower.

In The Marriage Lie, written by Cooney, Iris and Will have been married for seven years and life is as close to perfect as it can be. Bless the heavens, Jack and Beth are back and better than ever!
And that's only a small reason why This Is Us Season 3 Episode 3 is one of my favorite This Is Us episodes of all time, and trust me -- it has a lot of competition.
Why did I love it so much?
It managed to be so simple, yet so beautiful, reminding me why I watch this show in the first place. There is no family more complicated, but also more full of love then the Pearsons.
That sentiment rang true in the first few minutes of "Katie Girls" at Kevin's film premiere. Finally, after years of being brushed to the side and told to wait, Kevin Pearson finally got the applause from his family he so rightfully deserved.
Take it in, Kevin, you deserve it.

A version of this story appeared in the Down to the Wire issue of TheWrap’s Emmy magazine.
Jimmy Kimmel was never the most overly political of late-night hosts but in the last year he has emerged as one of President Trump’s sharpest critics.
It all began when he talked about the heart ailment of his newborn son and used it
in a passionate defense of Obamacare that played a part in the failure of an attempted repeal.
In that moment — and frequently since then — Kimmel has been a valuable comic voice of reason, speaking out in a way that hit home for many, and that has gotten “Jimmy Kimmel Live!” recognized again by Emmy voters as a nominee for Variety Talk Series. He sat down with TheWrap to discuss his unusual new position in the late-night and cultural landscape.

Wgn America is adding to its Prime Crime slate with the acquisition of two original series in the detective procedural genre — the comedic Carter, starring Jerry O’Connell (Billions), Sydney Poitier Heartsong (Chicago P.D.) and Kristian Bruun (Orphan Black), which will premiere August 7, and crime drama Gone, starring Chris Noth (The Good Wife), Leven Ramblin (The Hunger Games) and Danny Pino (CSI: Miami), for debut in early 2019.
Carter and Gone are part of Wgn America’s new programming strategy of cost-effective originals launched a year ago that involves acquisitions of already produced series, virtually all in the crime arena. The two new pickups represent a new element in the tactic. While all previous acquisitions have been foreign series — 2017 Canadian detective drama Bellevue starring Anna Paquin, 2015 Swedish-American thriller 100 Code, 2016 Canadian police series Shoot the Messenger and the 2017 Canadian drama Pure — Carter and Gone, while having international pedigree, both originated in the U.

Marvel’s God of Thunder is undoubtedly one of the most established heroes in the entire McU. And it’s a credit to Taika Waititi and the writing team behind Thor: Ragnarok that the beloved Norse god underwent a radical transformation after four screen appearances.
That’s not to say that Chris Hemsworth’s Phase One Avenger was devoid of personality; rather, the aforementioned threequel stripped the character down to the bare bones, and crushed Mjölnir in the process, in order to create Thor 2.0, if you will. Gone was the stoic brute of Phase One and Two and in his place was a broken soul still reeling from the death of, well, his entire family.
All of this comes to a head during his heartfelt exchange to Sweet Rabbit Rocket Raccoon during Avengers: Infinity War, and it’s arguably one of Hemsworth’s finest moments in the role. But the...
