How would you feel if you worked in a respectable job which you'd trained hard for over many years, and one day your boss came up to you and told you to start work on a project for something that was never actually going to be developed in reality and was based on a kids' TV series? It's the sort of thing that happens in reality from time to time as companies pursue intellectual exercises to sharpen up the skills of their employees, but when the boss is grinning and jumping around like a kid himself, and when you're told there's no budget, you'd be justified in feeling nervous.
That's the pretext of Tsutomu Hanabusa's workplace comedy, which manages surprisingly well to joke about fans, joke along with fans and explore some more serious themes. The cartoon it refers to - itself based on the manga Mazinger Z - ran on.

Two of most renowned characteristics of the Japanese people are their love for manga/anime and their inherent persistence and methodic way of doing things that lets them go to “places” others would not even dream of going. In case you have not heard, these two aspects are now coming together in the construction of a real life Gundam robot, but this is not the only example. The Maeda Corporation Fantasy Marketing Department is a team of five engineers from the aforementioned civil engineering company, whose members, back in 2004, released an essay online outlining what it would take to build Mazinger Z’s iconic hangar—which includes an elevator rising up through a swimming pool that splits in half. Now, more than 15 years later, their effort has been turned into a movie, that also features the creator of the original manga, Go Nagai, in a cameo.

Production in China has got underway on a Mandarin-language remake of hit Japanese comedy “Key of Life.” The plot involves a failed actor who swap identities with a stranger, only to discover that the man is a top assassin.
The original film was produced and distributed by leading Japanese indie The Klockworx – along with production committee members including King Records, Dentsu and TV Asahi — in 2012. It was acquired for North American release by Film Movement.
“The original ‘Key of Life’ was a black comedy with both the story and the characters bordering on the absurd. The Chinese version will make the characters more local, but the essential structure of the screenplay will be kept intact,” a spokesman for production company Shanghai Artown Film told Variety.
The original screenplay written by director Kenji Uchida won prizes at the Kinema Junpo Awards, the Japan Academy and the Shanghai International Film Festival, where...
