Mildly entertaining, but weak in the horror department...
paul_haakonsen26 April 2021
Well, I wasn't really sure what I was getting into here, as I sat down in 2021 to watch the 2019 horror movie "ReVisitant". I had never heard about the movie, and I must admit that title of the movie was a bit silly. But still, with it being a horror movie that I hadn't already seen, of course I found the time to sit down to watch this movie from writers Jon Binkowski and Stephen DeWoody.

And while "ReVisitant" is a watchable movie and mildly entertaining, it was by no means a milestone in horror cinema. The movie, as directed by Jon Binkowski, was running on what felt like auto-pilot. The script and storyline was pretty linear and didn't really offer much of any shocks or surprises. And actually, for a horror movie then "ReVisitant" was a bit on the tame same.

The storyline was pretty straight forward, I will say that much. But writers Jon Binkowski and Stephen DeWoody weren't really venturing into unknown territory with what they delivered in terms of script and storyline here. So if you are a seasoned horror veteran, such as myself, then "ReVisitant" comes off as a bit mundane and generic.

The acting in the movie was actually fair enough, though I doubt it is performances that I will be remembering a week from now. But the cast were doing good enough jobs with the material they had to work with.

I mentioned earlier that this horror movie was a bit tame. And it is. There isn't anything overly scary throughout the course of the movie. Some of the effects were adequate, but they weren't exactly scary.

Ultimately, then "ReVisitant" is a less than mediocre foray into the horror genre. I am rating it a four out of ten stars. It is good enough for a single viewing, provided you are not expecting a grand horror experience here.

Falls a bit flat.

Comedy horror isn't the easiest genre to get right. You have to get the balance right between the comedy and the horror, and you have to have actors who have the skill to pull it off. This has neither, so the film comes across as a bit schizophrenic. The comedy takes away the impact of the scary parts and horror makes some of the comedy seem distasteful. It's an entertaining enough romp, but has more than it's fair share of cringey moments and is unlikely to scare anyone. Ok to watch if there really is nothing else to see, but wouldn't recommend it. It's all a bit lightweight and muddled.

Won't remember a thing.

A skeptical psychic finds herself 'haunted' on the anniversary of her husbands' death. Compressing 90 minutes into a single sentence hardly does anyone justice but even so, the idea seemed to have merit. The resulting movie, The Visitant, doesn't exploit this merit but it is an OK made for television production.

Set design, in fact all aspects of mise-en-scene are characterized by 'middle classness' and unrelenting neatness. As a consequence, the film is anything but atmospheric.

Cinematography is of the, an actor stands, the camera follows them up; a character sits and the camera follows them down, type. It is adequate but pedestrian. The same summation can be made of the script.

Michelle Simms, as Samantha, plays the lead with conviction but not a great deal of range. She was much better in Red Tide which was of a more thriller than something with a supernatural bent.

The actual haunting is low key. Milk mysteriously sours, the television set suddenly stops, several appliances suddenly come to life - you get the idea. The jump scares are lackluster.

About the 40-minute mark things gets fleetingly more adventurous but it doesn't last.

At the hour mark, there is a slight increase in the complexity of the plot as we move into the denouement, the great reveal.

At an hour and 26 minutes, something finally happens! Yes, with four minutes of screen time to go but that something is not enough to lift the preceding nearly 90 minutes.

Director Jon Binkowski might have taken a few more risks with the material he was working with. There is a sequel, ReVisitant, which is actually a weaker film and even more wearisome.

This all sounds very negative, but no one should feel embarrassed about having The Visitant on their CV. It's just that it leans so heavily towards the bland.

You won't be able to recall a damn thing a day after watching it, but The Visitant, is a harmless way to fill in an hour and half.

Do not watch! Terrible
rqualls-8220925 April 2021
This movie is a cess pool of awful acting and bad writing. Like, on par with birdemic awful. Just, don't. It isn't even "so bad, it is good" bad. More like so bad it's migraine inducing.

Go To Hell You Ghastly Beast!

Move the Mask! Move The Toy! OMG ITS STEVEN!!! And then we have a house with a dead body.

Then 1 year later, some college Pledges are chased out of the house in their hazing event by a little girl. I guess little Suzie lives next door.

Lol, that was funny when Amanda barfed up a lung shouting 'Leave Us Alone!!!' Wow, bad. -1 Star.

Oh...man, does it get worse??? Oh yeah. Horrible.

I did like the quotes interspersed through the movie from actual songs by decent writers.

Even the kinda cool stuff thrown in at the end didn't really help. Actually, maybe it did. 3/10.

First time acting?

Warning: Spoilers
Some of the worst acting I've ever seen. Plot is awful. Characters are wooden and pretty sure they were reading their lines off of cue cards. Ridiculous ripoff of the movie Fallen, which is actually good. Shoehorned in some "scary" clown scenes for some reason. No idea why.

The Only Review You Need To Read
soulcrisis2815 August 2021
Ok so, between the review from the person who likes to hear himself talk, and the review from the person who can't classify movies properly let alone write a good review, and the extremely harsh one and the sugar coated one that also isn't on point, here's the only review you need to read.

This is not a comedy/horror, the writing is just that bad that it comes off that way in some places but still fails at that even. Even using the term horror is pushing it because it's not scary at all.

That being said, half the cast are millennials/teenagers and younger so you know that means bad acting/can't act. Even the adult actors are nothing to write home about. The characters are rather annoying. The mom is naive and oblivious to the world around her. The youngest is a thief, and it's condoned and not even addressed. The older teenager and her friend spending the week there are just mean to the mom. So not only bad acting and writing, but characters with no redeeming qualities either.

The SFX, and I use that word very lightly, are just atrocious and shouldn't have been used at all. It's terrible smoke CGI with a "dark man" in it. Yep, that's what they call it, "dark man."

Entire movie takes place in 2 houses. That's to be expected with low budget they can't afford to film all over the place so it's really not any worse than paranormal activity.

They did seem to use high standard cameras so the final picture looks pretty good and with good lighting.

That's pretty much it, it's definitely a skipper but, if you're having trouble finding something to watch, there's worse choices you can make.

Quite Entertaining and Fun
deadgirlrising26 April 2021
I watched this movie in spite of the other review that claimed, "...so bad it's migraine inducing." I went in expecting a fairly bad, low budget horror. I am used to bad, low budget horrors, some are better than others.

ReVisitant is a ghost story and not a bad one at that. It has its intentional humourous moments, so comical that I was thinking this could be a horror/comedy. The girl, Sara, is hilarious, precocious, and thoroughly entertained by the haunting.

The cinematography was good. The acting wasn't bad. This is not a huge budget movie, but it is good. Watch it, it is fun.
