One of the Best Episodes of this Show
seamovieman29 May 2021
This episode completely pauses the fast-paced cutting that "Modern Family" is so well known for, and instead just holds the scene in each situation. It is an absolute joy to behold.

It allows us to see how really brilliant the writing is on this show. Without the quick cuts, w Really get to see how exceptionally talented all the performers really are.

I found the interaction between Jay and Gloria to be especially moving. Their story was simultaneously realistic, uncomfortable and beautiful. I never knew that Sofia Vergara had such acting chops.

Though not a change I would want to see on a regular basis, but it was a nice respite from the hectic pace and a welcome one-time change.

Great episode, Highest ETM Recommendation for fans of the show.

One of the best episodes in the series

Only 7.5, really? This episode is perfect. The stories are great and perfectly balanced with each other. The ones that I want to highlight are those of Alex and Hiley. Finally in a long time it feels like the characters are growing and moving somewhere, something that was missing in the series. I cannot speak for how the characters develop in the following episodes since I have not seen them, but this shows a step in the right direction in terms of development growth.

Reveals The Depth of Talent

Incredibly well written. One of the greatest strengths of this show is the fantastic cross cutting and parallel editing, and yet this veteran show chooses in this episode to remove that strength as a challenge. The 4 separate 5 minutes stories unfold so masterfully and efficiently that you are shocked each takes place in 5 real time minutes. By purposely removing one strength they showcase the many others. Brilliant episode.

Warning: Spoilers
I couldn't remember if this episode was watchable...or if the series at this point had officially delved into the unwatchable.

Manny and Gloria typically annoying. Damn Manny is a just a...not sure the word to use. Just too....passive? Type B. An old lady? An old soul?

Claire...being Claire.

Mitch and Cam were funny enough. I'm along forn the ride with missing a flight and being on sleeping pills.

So this episode wasn't in the unwatchable realm yet. Not as good at its peak...but still definitely watchable...ish?

So...I'm not sure if this a 7 or not. hmmmm? Would I watch this again? It's mainly overall a sub par episode... but some funny parts. Not sure the few funny parts outweigh the bigger percentage of non funny parts.

Joe Mande with Alex was funny enough...especially his interaction with Phil about Claire.

Damn...17 minutes in. This episode is dragging. Now a Haley scene? Nathan Fillion...I forgot he was in this for a few episodes.

I think this is the stage of Modern Family where...it wasn't bad yet...definitely wasn't as good as it once was. I think the biggest problem is...the earlier episodes were rewatchable. I knew what was coming...but they still made me laugh. Then they became entertaining enough for a single watch...but not funny enough to keep me coming back multiple times. This episode is in the end stages of great rewatchable episodes...but before they got completely unwatchable the last 3 seasons.

Finally finished. This was brutal. This is a 6.

This was an episode that signals...be prepared for some very unfunny episodes of Modern Family with long stretches of no reaction the next few seasons before we finally put this show out of its misery.

Five Minutes

It's nice that the show was still trying to do new things at this later stage of its run, but this episode didn't really work for me, with only two of the four stories proving entertaining (Hayley and the Phil/Claire/Alex).

It was nice to see Alex being used effectively too - that's a rarity.

So while I can't add another 9-10 star review, I can say I value the attempt.

Poorly Utilized Storytelling Device
jliberman-913211 October 2023
Warning: Spoilers
While I applaud the show for using a unique storytelling device to try to keep things fresh, it simply doesn't land for me. This is the third time I can think of where the show significantly deviates from its typical format after Connection Lost (2015) and Phil's Sexy, Sexy House (2015), and I don't think this episode lives up to the former ones.

This concept of 5 minute scenes to create four separate vignettes among the characters is a compelling idea and had the potential to be really impactful, but instead it was wasted on stories that were unfunny, didn't move the story forward, or both.

The Mitch & Cam story was admittedly quite funny and didn't need to be plot driven. I give that one 9/10.

The story with Phil, Claire, and Alex felt like it was forced to be five minutes long. The parents finding out about Ben moved the plot forward, but the writing for this scene felt reminiscent of when I would turn a 4-page paper into a 5-page paper by just adding a bunch of fluff. I give it a 4/10.

The Manny, Jay, and Gloria story felt like it came from a script someone wrote for an indie short-film contest. It felt like it was trying to be very compelling and eye-opening, but I was just bored. I didn't laugh once. There was nothing pertaining to plot. I didn't need it. I give it an 2/10.

The Haley & Rainer bit was an easy end to their relationship, but once again didn't really need to be five minutes. It didn't feel as forced as the Alex one, but it didn't feel earned. There was hardly any comedy, and I could tell a minute in where it was going. 5/10

Overall, I wanted this to be better than it was, but I do appreciate the attempt at something new.

One of the worst of the series
Ripshin20 March 2024
Yes, so many users seem to love this episode. A "special" episode with, frankly, very little humor. Does that make it obligatory to wuv it? This is a SITCOM, not a dramedy. The highlight of such a brilliantly written comedy series, would NOT be THIS.

The parking scene is tedious. The dorm section is creepy. The proposal ending just "thunderously" terrible.

Frankly, I find this entire episode to be about as lame as they come.

Oh, and the airport scene is truly cringe-worthy.

So, folks, it is "the best of the series"? WHY? It just feels like a token episode. "Oh, let's show that we can 'do' drama." Spare me.
