Brackenreid remains over sea probably a lot longer, so acting inspector Murdoch starts reorganizing the bureau more efficiently, while maverick detective Llewellyn Watts, ousted from his own precinct,is allowed to borrow Jackson and work from Thomas's office on the missing women, motivated by the disappearance of his own sister when he was a kid. William and Crabtree are called on by Jonah Foster who believes his grandmother Adelia is about to be swindled out of half his inheritance by the umpteenth candidate responding to their annual advertisement inquiring about her other grandson Adam, who disappeared as a young boy twenty years ago. They nor Julia find conclusive evidence whether the shy Adam is real, but Crabtree's research helps link the case to another suspicious orphan boy corpse died around that time, with the only presumed witness missing. The old case proves the key to old and present crimes after Jonah shoots Adam in a 'hunting accident' -not fatally- and an adult male corps is found, thrown off a train.
