Creepy Twin
pumping_iron-128 June 2022
This movie was entertaining. It was close to being a horror movie. The looks those twins gave were horrifying. Grace Van Dien was convincing as the twins Olivia and Quinn. Jacy King was believable as Cassie the insane mother. Haylie Duffy was alright. But Van Dien really carried this movie.

Could well have been called "The Bad Seeds"
mgconlan-121 May 2017
Warning: Spoilers
"The Bad Twin" (neither IMDb.com nor Lifetime's own publicity had the definite article in the title, but it's there in the opening title credit) stars Haylie Duff as Dr. Kim Burgess, a psychiatrist who hosts a local radio show in which she gives advice to various callers with "issues." One day during her broadcast she gets a call from a woman who claims she's just a fake and doesn't know anything at all about how people really tick, and screams about how Dr. Burgess can represent herself as an expert on "families" when her own is wildly dysfunctional. Kim gives her call screener a nod and the screener hangs up on the woman in mid-call, but the woman later confronts her outside the studio where she's signing a few copies of her books for fans and turns out to be her sister Cassandra "Cassie" Murphy (Jacy King). Cassie is the mother of 15-year-old twin daughters Olivia and Quinn, both played quite effectively by Grace Van Dien, who turns in an accomplished performance in which she's able to communicate by slight differences in intonation and posture which girl is which. (The effects work that allows both Van Diens to appear on the screen together is also quite good, though there are a number of shots in which one twin has her back to the camera and it's obviously a stand-in or a double.) Cassie has just been put in a mental hospital for her attack on Kim, and rather than let her nieces go into foster care Kim agrees to take them in even though she doesn't know the first thing about parenting. Kim has a boyfriend, Kevin (Scott Bailey), who's cute and so young-looking he seems more like her son than her partner, but he's a pretty milquetoast character. At first the twins carry on a war of intimidation against their aunt, including stealing valuables from her home and burying them in her backyard, but then in a video call with their mom in the institution mom gives them written instructions so the hospital staff can't see what she's communicating with her daughters. She instructs them to find Kim's will — which, when they do, it turns out leaves her entire fortune to a charity instead of the sisters or their mom — and then, when they get a face-to-face visit, she plays Scrabble with them and spells out the words "ADOPTION" and "BE NEEDY." This gives the girls the message that they're supposed to go all out to get Kim to adopt them legally — and Olivia, who's clearly the "alpha" of the two, seeks out not only to get Kim to adopt them but to knock off anyone who might stand in the way of that plan.

"The Bad Twin" is a good movie but it didn't seem as interesting as it would have if it hadn't been preceded on Lifetime's schedule by the superior "Secrets of My Stepdaughter," and I think the main problem with it is there's no real suspense. Unlike in "Secrets of My Stepdaughter" — or the obvious model for this sort of story, "The Bad Seed," which writer Alix Reeves was so blatantly ripping off she might have well have called it "The Bad Seeds" — we know from the beginning the twins, Olivia in particular, are up to no good. And as well as Grace Van Dien acquits herself as the twins, it's all too obvious she's modeling her performance on Patty McCormick's in "The Bad Seed" — which pretty much has set the template for how to play a child psycho. "The Bad Twin" is decently done and offers a few of the frissons director John Murkowski and writer Reeves were clearly after, but it's not that good and it doesn't offer the sinister progression of its models in which we first took the psycho girl(s) at face value and only later realized they were psycho.

Duo Damsel
wes-connors25 February 2017
Warning: Spoilers
After her crazy sister is committed to an institution for the mentally ill, wealthy radio talk-show therapist Haylie Duff (as "Jen" Burgess) accepts guardianship of her pretty twin nieces. The 15-year-old twins "Olivia" and "Quinn" are played by one actress, mature-looking Grace Van Dien. The girls are not only strikingly beautiful and mature-looking, but also pout in in creepy, trouble-signaling ways. They sometimes dress like super-models and other times like they're Amish. In either case, they stand out in the messy home kept by unhinged mama Jacy King (as Cassandra Lynn Murphy). One of the twins is revealed to be creepier than the other and becomes the "Bad Twin" referred to in the title. You won't believe what she does, or maybe you will...

Watch for youngest "My Three Sons" classic TV comedy actor Barry Livingston help Ms. Duff as a kindly doctor...

This is a technically successful film for director John Murlowski and his crew. When a single performer is cast as twins, it's fun to try to watch for the instances when "special effects" or a double are used to get both characters on screen. She never really seems like the poor, troubled teenagers she is directed to portray, but Ms. Van Dien handles a range of emotions well. Both the effects and Mr. Murlowski's direction are quite skillful, and Alix Reeves' story gets you involved enough in the drama to suspend disbelief about the single twins. Everyone seems to manage their role without being particularly believable. Very little would lead me to believe any of the conspiring actresses would allow themselves to be trapped in an enclosed area with a swarm of bees.

**** Bad Twin (12/29/2016) John Murlowski ~ Haylie Duff, Grace Van Dien, Jacy King, Scott Bailey

Bad Twin is a bad movie
phd_travel15 August 2017
Warning: Spoilers
A successful radio talk show host takes charge of her twin nieces after her crazy sister has to be institutionalized. This movie alternates between overacting, underacting and ludicrous scenarios. Overacting: The crazy sister of the main character (Haley Duff) has sudden crazy outbursts. Underacting: The surprisingly well groomed twin girls (Grace Van Dien) one does evil the other looks morose. Although she does help a little now and then. There is a really silly even by LMN standard scene where the evil twins buries someone with her head sticking out in the sand on the beach then lets her drown. So dumb it has to be seen to be believed. Why she couldn't just lift herself up defies explanation. How heavy could a thin layer of sand be? Many LMN movies are cheesy and that's part of their charm but this one crosses the line to dumb.

Simply the worst

I like bad movies sometimes...they can be laughable and absurd...but the acting in this movie is so abysmal that it is nothing but constantly irritating. I fast forwarded it so I could see what the plot and ending entailed, and it only got worse. Really, there is no reason to watch this movie unless you are Haylie Duff's mother. Even then, you are bound to cringe....

just seriously bad

Well this really is a bad movie - the plot holes are beyond belief !!! I don't think I will even waste my time explaining it - but one point that hasn't been made yet is how ridiculous was the condition of the home they were living in - 15 years old and they couldn't keep it tidy themselves - forget about their crazy mother - they showed no signs of untidiness when living with their aunt, all so neat and clean and tidy all the time - also, how on earth did they move that heavy bedroom furniture ! simply absurd - some of you have already mentioned the beach scene - utter disbelief ! what about when the doctor inspects the aunties burnt arm, didnt prescribe anything in particular or even ask what cream did she use to advise other consumers of the dangers - it just goes on and on and on - also they live in a posh built up suburb but when they co for a bike ride, all of a sudden they in fields and valleys and mountain sides - with a lady just walking a dog down the road ! please ! worth watching just for the criticism

Way too many plot holes, unrealistic situations.
FloridaFred18 June 2018
Warning: Spoilers
Okay, it's "Lifetime Movie Network", but even so, this movie has way too many improbable situations. When did Auntie take the girls shopping, for the numerous matching outfits that they wear? The friend buried on the beach... she can't push her way out of 6 inches of sand? And does the tide really come in that fast? Next, the boyfriend who is served a plate of poison mushrooms - did they finish eating the dinner, or not? And the phoniest scene of all: how does someone who is not a professional bee keeper (an apiarist) get hundreds of bees into a cigar box? And when that box of bees is released into a car with four occupants, and all the windows are rolled up, do those bees really only sting just one person? Sorry, this could have been a lot better. The actress playing the twin sisters did her best... but it isn't enough to overcome the mistakes and unrealistic scenes in this afternoon movie.

Really ?

What an idiotic movie ! Everytime I see a movie with Hilary Duff in it, it turns out to be a dud . And this one was a super dud .

How far fetched can you get , the plot was just so ridiculous , too many silly scenarios, which you will just have to watch , and see for yourself !

And as for the " creepy " twins ? I just could not stop laughing everytime they appeared.

They did'nt seem to do very much , except wander around the mansion aimlessly , and trying to look wierd !!

And what was with the dressing the same ??? Are they like .... 4 years old ?

Teenage twins do not do that, not in my world anyway !

This movie was just ......annoying !

And, if Aunt Jen said " we will all be a family " one more time !!! ...........

Superb

A great family story that pulls in all elements of humanity and insanity at their best. The acting in this film is some of the best I have ever seen; that goes for Haylie Duff, who plays the MC, Jen, Jacy King (her insane sister, Cassie) and Grace Van Dien (the twins). I honestly thought the twins were real life twins, and it wasn't until I looked at the credits that I discovered otherwise; that's how well the director filmed the scenes and how well Dien was able to balance both roles--just, wow!

Writing Quality: Stellar. A gripping story with slow suspense builds because you never know what the evil twin is about to do. The things she does are so personal and deathly that you are in for one surprise after the next; most of these are not trite death attempts, nothing you've seen in similar films. Scare Factor: Two things are scary here: Cassie, Jen's (Haylie Duff) psychotic sister, who verbally and physically lashes out at Jen for no reason other than she's insanely jealous of her sister and has been their entire lives. She lunges, roars, and laughs insanely, and it's all so scary that you wonder how Jen put up with this madness for so long. And then there's the "bad twin", who lurks around every corner of Jen's life, plotting the next way to hurt her. Content (sex, language & violence): No sex. No language. Violence is shown only with Cassie lashing out. Values: There are many. Preserving a family unit. Doing good. Trying to help someone turn from their evil ways and do good. Loving and forgiving even those who have wronged you your whole life. This film shows how deeply evil can run through a family, but also how we have choices and can make good ones, as the good twin does. And it also shows that no matter how nice you are to someone evil, how very giving and sacrificial you are, that person will defiantly remain evil.

The Bad Twin? No! A Bad Movie.
P3n-E-W1s311 August 2019
So why watch TV Movies?

To be honest, when you have time to spare they are not a bad way to waste time - better than Jeremy Kyle or Loose Women. There's even the chance you may come across a great film, which I have. Though you'll more than likely get some average dross that's been rehashed a million times before, but is acted and directed well. However, that leaves the last type - The Abysmal - which this title falls into dead centre.

I've always like evil twin stories. It's the fact that, though they are identical on the outside, inside is quite a different matter. This brings in a lot of possible conflicts between the twins. How good is the virtuous one? Can they be manipulated? Or are they the alpha? How bad is the naughty one? Are they the manipulator? Are they the alpha in the relationship? Bring in other outside influences and you have the basics for a lot of differing storylines.

The writer, Alix Reeves, adds absolutely nothing new. It even appears he doesn' even try. What we get are all the usual stereotypes within this sub-genre; none of which are built on. The story feels stale and old. You've seen it all before and better crafted.

Add to this the lackadaisical direction of John Murlowski and you get a low-grade film, not worth watching. There is one scene that is worth a mention. On the day of the picnic where the twin's nutso mother gets out of rehab for the day, Murlowski does a nice job of the head to head the mother has with one of her daughters. This is the best shot of the whole film. It is even memorable. Wish he'd one better with the rest.

It doesn't help that the actresses and actors also appear weary of the whole thing too. Most of the time, they shuffle from scene to scene and speak their lines, without putting in much effort. You don't get any atmosphere from them, the directing, and the story.

Though I do have to point out Jacy King as sister Cassie is superb at being nuts. Even the guy who played Kevin, Scott Bailey, gave a decent performance. At least a couple were taking it seriously... come on people, entertain us.

I could not recommend this film to anyone. It's so passive and mediocre I can't even endorse it as a movie showing inspiring filmmakers how not to do it.

Just stay away from this bad twin...

Gruelling

The only upside of this is that the girls are pretty.

Wooden script. Wooden acting. And the worst bit for me ... the three main characters, two twins and their aunt, deliver the majority of their lines with unreconstituted Vocal Fry, which just has me sticking my fingers in my ears to relieve the pain.

Watching now....just no.
CranberriAppl30 January 2019
Warning: Spoilers
Now we all know that we have to give Lifetime a bit of a wide berth sometimes with their outlandish movies, but we have to draw the line somewhere. I am watching this film now and it's not very good.

First, I am 45 minutes in and I don't think we know why Jen's sister, Cassie, hates her. I mean it's obvious that it's partially bc Jen is successful and Cassie is a trainwreck, but Cassie hates her enough to want her dead? To steal from her? It would be nice to see a flashback to their childhood to see if Cassie is just a bad egg, or if their parents facilitated this. So far no information.

Second, family or not, the first "accident" would have been enough for me. The twins are already doing their best at being closed-off creepy kids, but somehow your new moisturizer has pool acid in it? And you already suspected them bc you tested the cream. FAmily or not, they would have been out of my house. They don't even seem to be seeing a therapist or counselor which would be common sense given the circumstances.

The mother has her daughters taking Jen's things and hiding them and then moves onto finding her will...in which they discover that none of them will inherit her money or possessions. Cassie instructs her girls to work to get themselves adopted by Jen in order to get her money for themselves and herself upon Jen's untimely demise. You hate your sister, but are bitter that she's cut you out of her will. Ok then.

I won't tell more of the plot, but I will discuss my issues with it. This movie tries so hard to be a thriller. Olivia is super fake. This movie is obviously sort of inspired by The Bad Seed (one of my favorites of all time) but Olivia is no Rhoda. Rhoda was incredibly fake and sugary but there were enough adults that saw through it after a while. But the brilliant thing about Rhoda was that we hardly saw her do her evil, so the question of "could she really do this?" was always present.

Next, why in the heck would the friend allow them to bury her in the sand? You are the fricken one that said send them back to social services! Completely dumb move on her part. Not to mention they don't even appear to be close enough for the tide to reach that part of the beach. The "murder" hasn't happened yet and the waves don't come that high. And it gets better. The water comes in like a flood but magically slows down once she drowns. And Auntie Jen magically appears after this all has happened. Absurd. Seriously, Jen? You KNOW she was on the beach with them. So far in the movie, nothing has happened to Jen's boyfriend but I"m guessing it will. He's so blah though that maybe they'll leave him alone.

Twins have an interesting dynamic. I remember a set of teenaged twins that killed their mother and watching them interact was so fascinating. They were so close that part of their sentencing was being sent to separate prisons and being barred from contacting each other. That was no doubt harsher for them than actually being put away. My point is, this film is doing too much. Not only do they dress alike but they're constantly dressed like the two dead girls in The Shining. I'm guessing this is in the summer bc they aren't in school. Their personalities are so extreme. Olivia is just like her mother and Quinn is passive and just goes along w/her sister.

Another thing is I hate when movies have characters doing stupid things for the sake of it. Like stop being STUPID. Why leave the beach knowing your friend was there and the girls claim to have no clue? Another thing is it's one thing to terrorize your Aunt thinking you are helping poor misunderstood Mom, but murderous 15 yr olds is a whole other thing. How did we get here? At this point, I want nothing more than both of them locked up, separated, and banned from each other and their mother.

I want to turn it off but I'm an hour in. It's so funny that the "psychiatrist" hasn't set up counseling for them at all. This is so bad. I may update this when it's over.

Good Twin, Bad Twin
lavatch21 March 2023
Warning: Spoilers
This film was all-too predictable in depicting a multi-generational pattern of one good twin and one exceptionally evil one.

Cassie and her sister Jen were a study in contrasts. One (Jen) became a celebrity doctor and radio host while the other (Cassie) was a slovenly, ill-tempered, and malicious twin. In the next generation, the twin daughters of Cassie (Olivia and Quinn) are once again good twin, bad twin.

Dr. Jen was far too much the Pollyanna, believing in the good side of human nature and ignoring the possibility of a truly depraved mindset. This was surprising for a trained psychologist.

Despite the good performances, the pacing dragged as scene after scene was formulaic with an inevitable showdown looming at the end. It was disappointing that the filmmakers could not find much redemption at the end. After all that Dr. Jen had tried to do for the two girls, the evil twin was beyond all hope and remained to the end a chip off the old block from her sick mother.

1956's "The Bad Seed," move over. You have double trouble.

A psychologist's mentally ill sister plots revenge on the sister she was always jealous of-big time. She actually uses her twin daughters to work with her to accomplish her goals. Trouble is that one of the twins isn't as much off the wall as the other and as the film goes on, she comes to appreciate what her aunt has done for her.

The wicked mother plans to be so off the wall that the judge shall grant her sister the right to adopt her nieces and then knock off the sister so that the evil mother and daughters can inherit everything.

A psychological thriller, often tense and core to the issue.
