Terrific latter-day episode shows the series' ongoing strengths

With so many police procedurals and even forensic shows (think CSI and Bones) on TV, the enduring smash success of Mark Harmon's NCIS can be explained by fine writing and a consistently talented acting ensemble. Proof of its staying power is this segment with McGee front and center in an emotionally potent pull on the audience's heart strings.

Without spoiling the fun, I was expecting utter calamity based on the coming attractions, as the health of McGee's lovely bride-to-be was in question. That's all sorted out by the fade-out, with the team as extended family brought together for a truly heartwarming finale. The segment's mystery is also well-plotted with an element of always topical hazing (in this case among the members of the scullery crew on a navy vessel) lurking behind the ostensible story line.

Many notable elements that depart from the norm or routine are the killer when finally revealed turning out to be a rather sympathetic individual, not the heinous terrorist or serial killer one expects for maximum impact on shows like this one or Criminal Minds, for example. And touching, telling details such as Harmon's heirloom watch come into play (with a very sensitive and economical Harmon performance). I must also note the smashing tuxedo so exceptionally modeled by Pauley Perrette as she prepares to serve as Best Man at the forthcoming nuptials - she consistently contributes along with star/producer Harmon to the series' enduring success.

The goofs contain spoilers that are NOT labeled. There's also no way to report them like with trivia.
