It's one of the cutest episode of Adventure Time. Told the history of Finn's past beautifully.

Best of season 8

This episode is amazing, nearly made me cry. It was very very close between this and The Dark Cloud, but this one feels bigger. It gives an originally 1 dimensional villain more development, making him feel way more sympathetic than before, and also recontectualizes a lot of stuff from past episodes, such as Finn being afraid of water. This episode is the peak of Adventure Time's story arcs, the Islands arc in general is peak adventure time, the entire top 5 for this season is filled with them. Oh yeah, also this episode is gorgeous, Islands in general had fantastic backgrounds and this episode in particular is a marvel to look at.

Warning: Spoilers
This episode is great, in fact, I'd say it's almost perfect.

Although I consider Islands to be the worst out of the three miniseries because there's so much filler and the ending is not that good, this is the best episode of the more recent seasons, including Stakes and Elements.

Let's start with who is, in my opinion, the most character in this miniseries: Martin Mertens.

Until now, you must've thought he was just a bad dad who is just interested in protecting himself, even if it means leaving everybody else behind, but, thanks to this episode, he's just become one of the most mysterious and interesting characters. You can see his story through two different viewpoints:

You can either think abandoning the islands and his family was always his goal, that he never changed, that he always was a selfish con artist or that, after saving Finn from being killed, some catastrophical event happened that made him go back to his old ways.

I'd suggest it's the latter, and I have a good reason to believe it is. Until Islands, we only know Martin was in the citadel in which only the worst villains are kept in there, having commited a cosmic crime or something like that. I suppose Martin might have been taken there because he basically hurt the Guardian to save his son. If this is the case, then it all fits perfectly, after that, Martin is frozen and gradually loses his memories and by the time Finn meets him it's too late, he's already forgotten everything.

Unfortunately, I think this is not the right answer. There were rumours that Min & Marty would also delve into what happened with Martin after he fought the Guardian, and there were sketches of Martin being on a boat after their encounter. By seeing those pictures, the event that led Martin to the Citadel must've been more forward in time.

Although Martin gets most of the praise, Minerva is also a good character, having a lovable personality and good intentions, that is, until the next episode.
