Emerging as one of the great directors of the sensitives and complexities of youth with her three features thus far, It Felt Like Love, Beach Rats, and Never Rarely Sometimes Always, we’ve been waiting to see what filmmaker Eliza Hittman would tackle for her fourth feature. Titled Motherlove, Hittman’s fourth film will follow Ana, “a Georgian immigrant in Brooklyn, who takes a job caring for Lori, an elderly woman in Manhattan, where she is forced to navigate end of life issues and complex family dynamics, while haunted by the separation from her own young daughter whom she has left behind in Tbilisi, Georgia.”

Sony Pictures Classics has acquired all rights worldwide to “Between the Temples,” a comedy with Jason Schwartzman and Carol Kane that earned strong reviews when it debuted at this year’s Sundance Film Festival. Directed by Nathan Silver, the film follows a forty-something cantor who is at a personal and professional crossroads. That’s when his grade-school music teacher re-enters his life as an adult bat mitzvah student, prompting the pair to form an unusual connection.
In a positive notice, Variety‘s Guy Lodge wrote, “Buoyed by the unlikely chemistry between its two stars, this alternately raucous and tender ‘Harold and Maude’ riff is the warmest work to date from microbudget auteur Nathan Silver.”
“Between the Temples” will have its international debut at the upcoming Berlin International Film Festival in the Panorama section. Schwartzman’s credits include “Rushmore,” “Asteroid City” and “Spider-Man: Across the Spider-Verse.” Kane is the Oscar-nominated star...

Director Scott Cummings has an editing background, having cut together indie treats including Beach Rats, Monsters And Men and Never Rarely Sometimes Always, so it’s fair to say he knows a fair bit about the importance of the connection and juxtaposition between images and, by extension, between moods. He brings this playfully to the fore in this hybrid documentary - made “in collaboration with” the Church of Satan, which offers snapshots from the daily lives of your average (and perhaps less than average) Satanist, that span from the domestic to the dramatic. Participants range all the way up to the current high priest and high priestess of the church.
The Devil, you might say, is in the details, as in various households, Church of Satan paraphernalia including skulls and the like, nestles alongside a Playbill for Phantom of the Opera or an Elvis statuette. Elsewhere a goat plate appears to be.

Jason Schwartzman and Carol Kane are starring in “Between the Temples,” a new film from writer and director Nathan Silver that’s being described as “an anxious comedy.” It’s the story of a cantor who is locked in a crisis of faith and finds his world turned upside down when his grade school music teacher re-enters his life as his new adult Bat Mitzvah student.
The supporting cast for this humorous exercise in neurosis boasts Dolly De Leon, who was just nominated for her scene-stealing work in “Triangle of Sadness.” Other ensemble members include Screen Actors Guild award-winner Caroline Aaron (“The Marvelous Mrs. Maisel”), longtime funnyman Robert Smigel (SNL’s “TV Funhouse”), stage and screen actress Madeline Weinstein (“Beach Rats”) and indie film regular Matthew Shear (“Mistress America”).

A number of great movies are leaving HBO Max at the end of March, so it’s time to prioritize these titles in your queue. Filmmaker James Gunn’s sequel/soft reboot “The Suicide Squad” will depart the streaming service on March 22 after first hitting HBO Max the same day it was released in theaters back in 2021. Similarly, “Space Jam: A New Legacy” was whisked away on March 1 after also getting a day-and-date release in 2021 (sorry/not sorry if you missed it).
You also only have until March 7 to stream “Just a Boy From Tupelo: Bringing Elvis to the Big Screen,” a short documentary on the making of the Oscar-nominated biopic “Elvis.”
Other noteworthy films leaving HBO Max this month include “The Assassination of Jesse James by the Coward Robert Ford,” “Contagion,” the extended version of “Dances with Wolves,” “Ghostbusters,” “Four Weddings and a Funeral,” “Love & Basketball” and “Popstar: Never Stop Never Stopping.

There’s nothing quite like when HBO is airing one of its trademark watercooler-worthy dramas weekly. Thankfully, we’ll get to it experience exactly that and more on HBO Max in March 2023.
The big ticket item on HBO Max this March is undoubtedly Succession Season 4 on March 26. Part prestige drama and part screwball comedy, Succession is about as fun a watch as they come. Season 4 of the series about egregious wealth will find the Roy siblings reeling after trying and failing to take down their father, Logan (Brian Cox).
HBO Max’s other major TV option this month is another weekly release from HBO. Matthew Rhys returns as the titular lawyer in Perry Mason Season 2 on March 6. Season 1 of this period piece reboot flexed the classic TV character’s detective skills. From the look of the trailer, it seems as though this is the year Perry makes his name in the court room.

Nearly three years ago, “Parasite” swept awards season. Bong Joon-ho’s sardonic masterpiece followed the Kim family, a tribe of basement-dwelling con artists who wormed their way into a wealthy household and wound up with blood on their hands. Perhaps as a direct result, we now find ourselves in an awards season glutted with eat-the-rich narratives. That might be fun — even revolutionary — if these films had more to offer than shallow drollery.
Ruben Östlund’s “Triangle of Sadness,” Mark Mylod’s “The Menu” and Rian Johnson’s “Glass Onion” are all stacked with prime talent and featured among this year’s For Your Consideration fodder, and all three films lampoon the garishly wealthy. But where “Parasite” used fleshed-out commonfolk as foils to the heinous elite, today’s films are more interested in making a spectacle of wealth than they are in actually developing their working class heroes.

The first look at A24’s upcoming wrestling drama “The Iron Claw” has been revealed, showcasing Zac Efron’s bulked-up physique as the Golden Warrior, aka Kevin Von Erich. “The Iron Claw” is a biographical film about the wrestling dynasty that was the Von Erich family, and co-stars “The Bear” leading man Jeremy Allen White as Kerry Von Erich and “Beach Rats” actor Harris Dickinson as David Von Erich.
In the first look, Efron’s muscular build is highlighted as he is seen mid-air, stunning his opponent with a striking kick move. Efron recently attracted social media attention when on-set photos revealed his bowl-cut hairdo, matching the style and era of the real Von Erich. Though Von Erich isn’t involved much with the upcoming film, he recently gave some high praise to Efron through TMZ, telling them: “I didn’t ever look that good. He looked great though, he must be working really hard.

For those who might have noticed on the Triangle of Sadness press day in Cannes this past May, one of the players in Ruben Ostlund’s Palme d’Or winner was sporting a distinctive coiffe. The first trailer for Ruben Östlund’s “Triangle of Sadness” is now online to watch, if you can stomach it. The satirical dark comedy won the Palme d’Or at the Cannes Film Festival earlier this year. Östlund, who first broke out with his comedy “Force Majeur,” now has two Palme d’Or wins under his belt thanks to “Triangle of Sadness” and his 2017 satire “The Square.” The new film marks Östlund’s first English-language feature.
“Triangle of Sadness” stars “Beach Rats” and “The Kingsman” actor Harris Dickinson as an aspiring model who gets the chance to vacation aboard a luxury yacht after his influencer girlfriend wins them a free trip. Woody Harrelson plays the yacht’s alcoholic captain. The yacht is full of pretentious and snobby guests who make up the 1, but they all get their comeuppance when the trip takes a dark turn.

There’s also the updated version of “Father of the Bride” premiering on June 16, while a pair of noteworthy documentaries are coming on the early side this month: “The Janes” premieres June 8 and follows unlikely outlaws in pre-Roe v. With its list of new releases for June 2022, HBO Max is joining in what should be a TV summer to remember.
Not content to let Netflix’s Stranger Things or Prime Video’s The Boys to dominate the summer TV landscape, HBO is coming through with a new season of one of its big hits. Westworld season 4 is set to premiere June 26 on both HBO and HBO Max. What will this season of the increasingly confusing sci-fi drama be about? Per HBO’s synopsis it will be “A dark odyssey about the fate of sentient life on earth.” So you know, only that.
Irma Vep is the only other Max Original of note this month. Based on a 1996 cult classic of the same name, this limited series stars Alicia Vikander as a disillusioned movie star looking to remake the early 20th century French silent film serial Les Vampires.

Harris Dickinson joins Dn today with the premiere of his Devisio Pictures produced film 2003, a short that chronicles a young soldier’s final day before deployment. The film is a gripping drama centring around the soldier’s uncomfortable if well-intentioned relationship with his father. The actor-turned-director – known for his nuanced performances in films by Xavier Dolan, Eliza Hittman and Joanna Hogg, and previously seen on our pages in a range of films such as Beach Rats, County Lines, and BIFA winning short Femme – brings an intuitive care to the performances of his own actors whose relationships in the film feel impressively well-rounded and complex. Dickinson also employed established Cinematographer Robbie Ryan to shoot the film on 16mm, giving the short a grainy texture which perfectly situates it in its early 00s setting. You can watch 2003 in its entirety below, after which we get into an in-depth chat with Dickinson where...

Spoiler Alert: Minor plot points for Ruben Östlund’s “Triangle of Sadness” are discussed below.
Cannes attendees waiting for David Cronenberg’s “Crimes of the Future” to give the festival a stomach-churning shock got an electrifying surprise with the world premiere of Ruben Östlund’s latest social satire, “Triangle of Sadness.” The movie earned an uproarious eight-minute standing ovation after a lively screening that found the audience at Cannes’ Palais theater shrieking in horror and delight.
The yacht is full of pretentious and snobby guests who make up the 1, but they all get their comeuppance courtesy of an extended 15-minute sequence in which a storm leads to an outbreak of seasickness.

There are diverse streaming releases slates and then there is Hulu’s list of new releases for May 2022. There are no big franchises here, no big themes – just a whole bunch of original and library titles for everyone to enjoy.
Hulu’s major original releases in May come in the middle of the month. Candy premieres on May 9 and stars Jessica Biel as your friendly neighborhood axe murderer. If that sounds a bit outlandish, bear in mind that this limited series is based on the real life story of Candy Montgomery and her victim, the tragically named Betty Gore. On May 15, Hulu will play host to Conversations with Friends. This is the latest adaptation of the works of Sally Rooney. After the breakaway success of Normal People, Hulu is undoubtedly hoping for more lightning in a bottle.

Sony has released a new trailer for “Where the Crawdads Sing,” an upcoming thriller set to hit theaters July 15. The film, which is based off the novel of the same name by Delia Owens, follows Kya (Daisy Edgar-Jones) — a young woman from the North Carolina marshes who becomes a suspect in the murder of a man she was once involved with.
“I fell so deeply in love with the world that Delia created, she has such a poetry to her writing. And her characters are so incredibly special, and deep and complex — particularly Kya, of course,” said Edgar-Jones in a video post promoting the film on “Where the Crawdads Sing’s” Instagram last February. “I would describe Kya as fiercely resilient, wonderfully curious and strong. And I just feel so privileged and excited to be playing her.”

Naomi Watts’ update on the cult horror film “Goodnight Mommy” just secured two crucial roles in Cameron and Nicholas Crovetti.
The twin boys will play Watts’ sons in the Amazon Studios project, which just kicked off production in New Jersey. Matt Sobel is directing the new take on the film, whose predecessor was selected as Austria’s entry for best international film at the 2015 Oscars.
The story follows two brothers who arrive at their mother’s country home to discover her face covered in bandages, what she says is the result of a recent cosmetic surgery. As her behavior grows increasingly erratic, a horrifying question takes root in the boys’ minds: what if the woman beneath the gauze isn’t their mother at all?
Sobel is directing from a script by Kyle Warren. Joshua Astrachan, David Kaplan, Nicolas Brigaud-Robert and Valery Guibal are producing. Watts, Sobel, Warren and the directors of the original film,...

Exclusive: Minhal Baig, the filmmaker behind acclaimed feature film Hala, has signed an overall deal with Amazon Studios and has set her first project.
Baig, who also wrote for the first season of Hulu’s Ramy and the final season of Netflix’s Bojack Horseman, will develop and produce content for the streamer as part of the deal.
Her first project is an adaptation of Samantha Schweblin’s short story collection Mouthful of Birds. The book, which was published by Penguin Random House last year, is a collection of stories featuring women on the edge, men turned upside down and the natural world at odds with reality.

There was something coming through us. It’s hard to not feel it when you’re dressed as him.”

It has been a rough year for me. While there has been sublime highs, my year has been defined by months of my girlfriend’s hospitalization and the overwhelming feeling of despair that potentially losing the love of your life brings. Without any of my normal comforts due to the pandemic––mainly the brilliance of being able to lose myself in a cinema––I’ve embraced the beauty of movies even more than normal. With nothing to do but wait in an empty room for news about her health, I’ve seen a lot of films from this year, some of which have helped delight, move, and heal me through the worst year of my life. It’s a testament to all of these that even with my mind not being in the right place, they’ve all left a permanent impact.

Henry Blake’s powerful debut feature tells the disturbing tale of a teenager drawn into a nightmarish world of criminality
“You know what the ‘acceptable loss’ of your business is?” a social worker asks a teenager caught in Britain’s brutal “county lines” drug-trafficking business: “You.” That’s a message that rings loud and clear through this impassioned debut feature from writer-director Henry Blake, an alarming yet compassionate portrait of a headline-grabbing scandal that combines the warm artistry of a coming-of-age picture with the cold, hard truths of a public information film.
Conrad Khan is Tyler, a disconsolate and somewhat hesitant 14-year-old whose mum, Toni (Ashley Madekwe), seems caught in a cycle of emotional and financial instability. After being bullied by older boys at a local cafe, Tyler thinks he’s found a potential protector in the shape of the enigmatic Simon. The latest in our series of writers recommending underseen films highlights a French coming-of-age gay drama
In the absence of a proper Pride month this year, I’ve found myself hunting down LGBT cinema more than usual. Living through a time like this – severed from a larger, in-person queer community – has seen films such as Saving Face, Weekend and Beach Rats suddenly serve a bigger role in my life. Queer films are typically indie, underpromoted productions – but there is a certain subclass that come and go without making even the faintest buzz. I Am Jonas is one of those: a dark, atmospheric French drama I only stumbled upon because I was desperately looking for something I haven’t watched in Netflix’s LGBT category yet.

Sullenly adrift between an unhappy childhood and an adult future that promises little, an introverted 14-year-old boy is lured all too easily into the world of county lines drug trafficking: a practice that sees vulnerable youths recruited by gangs to ferry drugs from cities to rural areas, with no protection on the other side. If the premise of Henry Blake’s taut, claustrophobic debut feature seems familiar, that’s because it’s built on ugly, unavoidable reality. Narratively, “County Lines” could have been ripped from any number of recent headlines anxiously tracking a growing social problem across Britain, but its tangible dead-end atmosphere, sharp sense of local geography and quietly expressive performances keep it from feeling like a teacherly PSA — and distinguish it from various glossier teen-terror dramas across the Atlantic.

More than a year since the film competed for the Palme d’Or at the 2019 Cannes Film Festival, Canadian filmmaker Xavier Dolan’s latest feature “Matthias & Maxime” has finally landed a distributor. Arthouse streaming and distribution service Mubi has landed VOD and TV rights to the coming-of-age drama in the United States, the UK, Ireland, Australia, New Zealand, Latin America (excluding Mexico), and India, and will premiere the film for audiences this summer. A release date is forthcoming.
“Matthias & Maxime” stars Harris Dickinson (breakout from Eliza Hittman’s “Beach Rats”), Gabriel D’Almeida Freitas, Dolan regular Anne Dorval, Pier-Luc Funk, and Dolan himself, who hasn’t starred in one of his own films since 2013’s “Tom at the Farm.” “Matthias & Maxime” (played by D’Almeida Freitas and Dolan) focuses on two men in their late 20s whose friendship changes after they’re asked to kiss for a student short.

Filmmaker Eliza Hittman prides herself on being an economical scriptwriter, laying out the basic story in a way that is easy to visualize for a reader, who can breeze through one of her feature-length scripts in 40 minutes.
“I think my scripts are deceptively simple,” said Hittman when she was a guest on IndieWire’s Filmmaker Toolkit podcast along with Scott Cummings, the editor of her new film “Never Rarely Sometimes Always.” “And then they expand in time in really unpredictable ways, because they have more of a natural rhythm and pace. It is about seeing somebody in private moments, and those private moments breathe, things breathe on screen in a way that maybe I don’t anticipate on the page.”

Few indie directors today navigate private spaces and fraught environments as effectively as Eliza Hittman, whose first two features “It Felt Like Love” and “Beach Rats” heralded a singular chronicler of young people in the thick of complicated desire.
With “Never Rarely Sometimes Always,” which premiered at Sundance and received an early VOD release on Friday after its theatrical release was truncated by the coronavirus, Hittman looks at one of the consequences of desire, as specifically experienced by the half that can get pregnant. In relaying a pair of teenage cousins’ tense overnight journey across the state line, Hittman wades into one of the more charged subjects of our time — abortion access — with the kind of sensitivity, focus and detail that will ensure its place as a dramatic standard for how to put a human face on a controversial topic.

Barry Jenkins and Adele Romanski know more than most about getting difficult stories to large audiences. Jenkins’ “Moonlight,” which he and Romanski produced through their production company Pastel, came together on a $1.5 million budget and ultimately grossed over $65 million in addition to winning Best Picture. Since then, the company — co-founded by Sara Murphy and Mark Ceryak — has supported a handful of other filmmakers, including Aaron Katz’s L.A. neo-noir “Gemini.” Their most recent credit comes out this week on VOD, but it wasn’t supposed to work out that way.
Eliza Hittman’s “Never Rarely Sometimes Always” won prizes in Sundance and Berlin before Focus Features released it in early March — days before theaters closed nationwide. The Universal subsidiary is now following a strategy it applied to movies like “The Invisible Man” and “The Hunt” by pushing “Never Rarely” into VOD on Friday.
