Maple Syrup Massacre is an editorial series where Joe Lipsett dissects the themes, conventions and contributions of new and classic Canadian horror films. Spoilers follow…
Fake Blood is a delicious curiousity: it’s a documentary about director Rob Grant and his frequent collaborator Mike Kovac, who also co-writes, exploring their responsibility in depicting cinematic violence.
Or at least that’s how it starts.
Over time the film slowly morphs into something different. As the two men embark on a mission to “experience” the kinds of violence depicted in their low budget films, they slowly become immersed in a narrative of their own making involving a “real-life” murderer named “John.”
Grant is well known in indie horror circles. In addition to directing under-the-radar gem Harpoon, he’s the editor of films like Knuckleball and this year’s Influencer.

No genre is as prolific as horror, so it’s understandable that movies fall through the cracks all the time. That is where this new recurring column, Deep Cuts, comes in. While some movies remain popular and talked about, regardless of age, countless others have faded into the background or obscurity.
Each themed installment of this series will spotlight several overlooked, unappreciated or generally unknown movies from the past — some from way back when, and others from not so long ago — that could use some more attention.
The first edition of this column will look at horror movies featuring wintry settings. It may not feel or look like winter wherever you are right now, but somewhere it’s cold. And with a frosty backdrop, the five winter horror movies here feel more bleak than usual.

We reviewed Amelia Moses’ Bleed With Me at Fantasia last year. And now her latest feature, Bloodthirsty, co-written by Wendy Hill-Tout and her daughter Lowell, is screening at Frightfest after a successful US festival run. Her first film was a take on vampirism, the second takes on lycanthropy. Can she go two for two in updating classic monsters?
Grey is a singer with a hit debut album. She also has writer’s block and nightmares about becoming a wolf. Dr. Swan gives her pills but they aren’t helping. She might have a cure for her writing issues though. Vaughn Daniels a reclusive producer whose career is equal parts successful and controversial has offered his services. Grey and her girlfriend Charlie (Katharine King So; Transplant) take up residence at his isolated studio.

When their yacht breaks down in isolated ocean waters, three "friends" find out just how much they really hate each other (and what they're capable of doing to each other) in Rob Grant's Harpoon. With the dark comedy coming out in select cinemas and on VOD this October from Dread, we caught up with co-writer/director Rob Grant to discuss assembling his game cast, finding a shooting location at the last minute, the challenges of filming on the water (especially in an area filled with curious kayakers), getting Brett Gelman involved as the movie's narrator, and exploring the "darker side of human behavior."
Thanks for taking the time to catch up with us, Rob, and congratulations on Harpoon! How and when did you get the idea for Harpoon?

"Cuckoo-crazy!" Wow this looks totally nuts. Greenwich Entertainment has debuted an official trailer for a documentary titled Screwball, which is not associated with the other baseball documentaries with similar titles including Fastball and Knuckleball. This Screwball doc is about Yankees star Alex Rodriguez and his steroid scandal. Filmmaker Billy Corben dives deep in this true-crime dramedy investigating the Mlb's infamous doping scandal involving a nefarious clinician from Florida and his most famous client: Alex Rodriguez. It's described as "a madcap Floridian crime comedy in the vein of Elmore Leonard or the Coen Brothers" that "raises serious questions about the ethics of professional sports. Powerful interests would be happy to let this story slip from memory, but Screwball makes it unforgettable." Sounds good, looks nuts. Casting kids for the reenactments is hilarious, but this whole thing looks so crazy. Here's the new official trailer for Billy Corben's documentary Screwball, direct...

It’s winter and a boy is unintentionally home alone, but what follows is more in the realm of mortal peril than wacky hijinks in “Knuckleball.” This admirably lean thriller, in which a 12-year-old dumped at grandpa’s during his parents’ vacation ends up fighting for life, doesn’t necessarily hold up to close scrutiny in terms of credibility. Yet while you’re watching, helmer Michael Peterson effectively earns suspension of disbelief with stark atmospherics, solid performances and a persuasive escalation of panic. The Canadian feature is opening on three U.S. screens simultaneous with its digital-formats release.
Henry (Luca Villacis) is by all appearances a typical kid, glued to his video games, not especially happy about being dropped off at a barely remembered relative’s isolated farmhouse while mom (Kathleen Munroe) and dad (Chenier Hundal) head south. Hello, readers! October is only a few hours away now, and beyond the fact that most of us have been counting down to the official start of everyone’s favorite month, it also means that we have a brand new batch of horror and sci-fi releases to look forward to on digital and VOD platforms in the coming weeks.
Easily the busiest day of October (and possibly even all of 2018), there are 11 different movies hitting various platforms on October 2nd, with highlights including The First Purge, Tales From the Hood 2, Sleep No More and Molly. On October 5th, one of my favorite films of 2018, Heavy Trip, is making its digital debut, and Knuckleball, featuring Michael Ironside, comes home the same day as well.
Netflix is keeping very busy throughout October, too, with a variety of films and genre-related series that fans are certainly going to want to check out in the coming weeks.

“To catch a predator he must think like one.”
If you’ve ever wondered what a low-budget R-rated Home Alone movie would look like, watch this new trailer for Knuckleball because that’s exactly what it is. The funny thing is, the original Home Alone films seem like they were just as violent than this R-rated riff! The violence was just done in a more comedic manner. Here’s the synopsis:

To catch a predator, he must think like one. Freestyle Releasing has unveiled an official trailer for an indie horror thriller titled Knuckleball, the latest film from Canadian filmmaker Michael Peterson. Described as "an R-rated spin on Home Alone," the film is about a 12-year-old boy who goes to visit his grandfather's isolated farm. When his secretive grandfather dies suddenly in the night, he must gear up and defend his home at all costs. Luca Villacis stars as Henry, and the cast includes Michael Ironside, Munro Chambers, Kathleen Munroe, and Chenier Hundal. This looks fun, but certainly derivative and unoriginal. I dig the Home Alone concept, of course, but I always hope new filmmakers twist it and do something more with it if they're going to borrow it. We'll see if this is any good. Here's the first trailer (+ two posters) for Michael Peterson's Knuckleball, direct from YouTube: Alone,...

Our friends at Raven Banner have just picked up the Canadian thriller Knuckleball. Michael Peterson`s film will have its Quebec Premiere at Fantasia on Saturday. Raven Banner plans a theatrical release this Fall followed by iTunes and VOD. We saw the trailer and a clip from Knuckleball during last year`s buyer`s showcase during the Frontieres Co-pro market. I had this to say, The trailer definitively gives off a Home Alone goes horror vibe with what looks like Henry setting up traps for Dixon. But yeah, it certainly looks darker than that franchise for sure. The surprising turn here is from Munro Chambers as the creepy neighbor. No longer the squeaky clean Kid from Turbo Kid there is something really unsettling about...
