Fun fantasy-mystery
jamesrupert201419 January 2018
Season 2 of "Dirk Gently's Holistic Detective Agency" is a clever 10-part mystery concerning a missing boy, a fantastical kingdom threatened by an evil mage, a trans-dimensional house, a black-ops government agency looking for people with paranormal talents, and several decades of inexplicable events. Into this morass drops Dirk and some of the characters established in season 1 (Todd, Amanda, Farrah, Bart, among others), who are drawn into the case (literally and figuratively). Don't let some of the goofy imagery in the 'fantasy world' turn you off, there is a certain internal logic to it all which becomes apparent as the story progresses. Admittedly, there is a bit of padding to fill out 10 episodes and some of the characters are so loud and over the top that it's hard to tell if they are just second-rate actors or first-rate actors playing at being second-raters, but things settle down after a few episodes and the story becomes quite intriguing. Much better (IMO) than season 1 but unfortunately destined to be 'season last' (at least as a BBC production) - too bad.

Expectedly not as strong as before as there're still some unsolved attachments to the last season, but strongly believe it'll come back high in the next episode

Well finally Dirk and Todd are back with a new holistic investigation .. even though the episode was not as strong as i hoped for, I believe as it still had the unsolved mysteries like black wing and the abduction of Dirk from last season so things went a bit slow ... Of course up until the end where Dirk is "Free" and ready to again look for Todd.

Maybe the episode had a low rhythmic events but i think when Dirk and Todd are reunited "hopeful in the next episode" we will get to see that tense stressful comedy from Elijah Wood and that humorous exciting carelessness from Mr. Dirk Gently.

The plot is still genuine and has many strong sub-plots so there are so many possibilities where the events are going, but i think the writers should be careful not to strip the comedic part away and just focus on the Sci-Fi !!! because yes the Sci-Fi element is the core of the story but for me the comedy here is as pivotal as the sci-fi part in the show.

As for the cast they're still engaging, Elijah Wood's expression of having that hallucinations was good, but again his script must go back to the tense comedy which he excels at , Samuel Barnett is also doing a good job and can't wait to see him again bug "Todd Brotzman".. and i'v noticed a new face; Amanda Walsh as "Susie" she was really good in here and expected to have more lines especially in the expected encounter with Dirk and Todd.

To conclude I'm happy it's finally back, this premiere though was not as strong as we used to but I "200%" believe it'll pick up in the next couple of episodes to the high level of comedy/thrill we used to.

"Find The Boy"

Warning: Spoilers
Series 2 of the American version of Dirk Gently, marks a quantum shift to our, eponymous heroes lives and equilibrium.

Quite how Svlad Cjeli could possibly be anyone's Prophetic Answer, especially unto a Parallel World frankly stretches credulity to it's utmost, but then...?

The Central Intelligence Authorities project Black Wing, has been summarily disbanded by Senior Agent Wilson. Having zero personal people skills she has promoted, Agent Friedkin to oversea its complete evisceration.

Of all of Black Wings behavioural Guinea pigs, Project Icarus has been restored to his Lab Rat status.

But exactly what information can a pillock like, Agent Friedkin ever hope to elicit from his Test Subject, when his own brain synapses are not exactly firing on all cylinders?

Black Wing Project Alpha appears to be a 'Pet' one of Agent Friedkin, but given his particular propensities to knee jerk reactions. His using a Test Subject as a virtual 'Crash Test Dummy', that has been wired into a taxi cab, serves more as an indication of his own thought processes.

Amanda Brotzman has been on the lamb, ever since Black Wing descended on the Rowdy 4, and she became under the protective wing of Vogel.

Tod Brotzman had lived a lie all of his entire existence, especially to his sister, Amanda in relation to her horrendous affliction of Perafibulises. His greatest sin being the claim that he had actually survived the disease, now his lies have come full circle to bite him full force on his butt.

Farah Black has been on the run with Todd Brotzman, and in desperation she has been forced to turn to her family for help, but is Todd right after all how much, can she really trust her sibling?

Is Berksburg in anyway representative of American Counties, are there really dirt track communities, inhabited by families such as the Boreton's. With a dad Bob who even wide awake appears to be in a trance, and a psychotic son Scott. The mum Suzie with all the appearance, of a girl trapped within a women's body, this family being entombed barely alive, within a living nightmare of their existence.

In what is quite literally a one horse town, resides the local law enforcement of two desultory officers, Sheriff Sherlock Hobbs and Deputy Tina Tevetina, the literally alive wire shotgun.

A town where "Nothing Happens" with a Capital N H, but are matters to change inexorably in ways that neither, the Boreton's nor the redoubtable law enforcers, can possibly hope to comprehend?

I forgot how hilarious this show was!

"'tis a very silly show"

This episode made clear, that the new season will be rather distinct from the last one, introducing new characters and in a way, an entire new world. Not necessarily one I like or would have chosen, but undoubtedly with huge potential to be hilarious.

The humor was strong in this episode, but subtle, and so, may have gone over a few heads. And so was the mystery. There were soo many curious and strange things in there, that I now want to know the answer of! (And opposed to Lost or X-Files, know I will get, and in a satisfying way too.)

It went a bit under, in being chaotic, but that's half the point of the show, and especially of this episode. (Can't say why, without spoiling it. It's just so you know to keep watching, as it will make sense in the end.)

All in all, the funny meant, the rest didn't even need to be in the action, and that is good, because that way the show got to do a bit of valuable world building, to use in the later episodes. I know it will be very well worth it, and enjoyed this episode a lot. Exactly my humor. Which is rare nowadays.

So, the first episode of the season is completely different from the first episode of season 1. A noticeable less helping of humour, but plenty more mystery to the plot. Characters from the first season are in this new series, all with their individual characteristics , but already, this first episode is full of questions and confusion. Looks good, but needs more laughs in it.
