Refreshing Look at Gender Roles
AppleEye2U2 April 2017
Strong Woman Do Bong Soon is a hilarious rom-com, with an undertone of gender issues. The show has the usual elements of k-drama: the rich, good looking chaebol heir, his cold, antagonistic family; the sassy girl; the love triangle; and the boy gets girl story after overcoming difficulties, but it managed to be so much more.

The plot: Do Bong Soon (Park Bo Young) is a woman, who's born with superhuman strength. "The Force" runs through the female line in her family. It can only be used for good or she can lose her strength forever like her mother did. She loves her father who is a gentle warm character, and her twin brother, Do Bong Ki, who works as a doctor in a hospital. Bong Soon can't find a suitable job, but she wants to be a game developer.

There are two other men in her life. One is her childhood friend, Guk Doo, a stern police detective played by Ji Soo. She has a secret crush on him. Also she hides her strength around him, since he claims to have a soft spot for tiny, fragile women, just like Bong Soo seems to be at first sight. The other man is Ahn Min Hyuk (Park Hyung Sik) the lanky, baby-faced CEO of AIN SOFTware, a gaming company. One day he witnesses Bong Soon's superpowers against a group of gangsters, and he hires her to be his personal bodyguard to protect him against a mysterious caller, who has been making death threats against him. At the same time a serial kidnapper starts taking tiny, fragile women off the streets. Guk Doo wants to catch him, Bong Soon comes to his aid. Can she help both men to track down the culprits?

The Good: this show is a wonderful blend of slapstick comedy, old fashioned romance and a refreshing look at gender roles. First there's a hidden message in the story, that loving a strong woman makes you a better man. It works that way for ages in the Matriarchy that is the Do Dynasty. Second there's a subplot about the young chaebol, who pretends to be gay. This image helps him with free publicity, protects him against unwanted female attention, and last but not least: keeps his lovely "Peanut King Kong" close by his side without alarming her. He even teases her with his supposed attraction to Guk Doo, saying he has a nice butt. His male secretary really seems to be gay, but not out of the closet yet, and the male office manager is openly gay trying to get his dear master into his nail painted clutches. Also the show makes fun of the Korean Patriarchy: the police office, the youth gang, the gangster mob in the neighborhood, and the patriarch of the chaebol's family, they are all absurdly dysfunctional.

The Bad: there aren't many flaws IMO, but tastes differ. I find the romance very sweet, but it could be old fashioned and slow paced to others. The slapstick elements, and multiple use of sound effects, are not everyone's cup of tea, but I liked it. See for example the scene with a drunken Bong Soon urging her boss to 'log out', meaning 'to come out' with the sound effect of a computer logging out. Finally I don't like to see the women molester, but I can understand his impact in this drama.

So I give Strong Woman Do Bong Soon a 9 out of 10, because I like the story lines, the action, and the actors are well matched.

Equal parts action, comedy, and romance
solid-rock8006 August 2018
Me and my husband watched this recently, and we both totally loved it. It was so funny! The characters are good, and the storyline is interesting. I loved the mix of genres - it was REALLY funny, and the romantic parts were sweet, while also having some pretty cool action in it. It had a bit of a comic-book-y style that reminded me of Scott Pilgrim vs the World, but toned down more. Definitely worth watching.

One of the best Kdramas I've seen!
KiraRuka18 July 2018
I've recently started watching Kdrama, so this show was on Netflix and i started watching it! Honestly it's the best show I've seen so far! The romance, the love triangle, the suspense it gave when they tried to find the culprit. It has it all. Definitely recommend this to those who are beginning to watch Kdrama.

Remarkable fun, funny and exciting
chairisto28 September 2018
The writing and the acting of this little series is extremely good. The chemistry between the two leads, Park Bo Yeong and Park Hyung Shik, is so good it is fun just to see them interact. I believe Bo Yeong won a best actress award for this and she is natural, brilliant and adorable, but Hyung Shik is probably the best male actor I've seen in K-drama. Often the players in k-dramas are wooden and the writing stilted, but this story just flows, even with the number of obligatory slow-mo almost-kiss eye-2-eye staring scenes. I enjoy Korean films and TV dramas, with their endearing flaws; this series kept all the good and was nearly flawless. A really enjoyable watch.

Best program (television & movies) that I have ever seen!
kiniestrada14 August 2018
Loved this show. First ever K- Drama for me (live in the US) & it surpassed every show, series, movie, etc. I have ever seen. (Not to give away my age but it has been quite a few decades.) The show is excellently written, has good flow, & the acting/directing/costume (basically everything) was superb! The chemistry amazing w/ the leads! I found it on Netflix w/ English subtitles & it has been watched several dozen times. I really hope the writer does more screenplays!

Cute and partly funny
phd_travel24 September 2020
The positives are the couple are cute as a button and not annoying. Park Hyung Shik and Park Bo Young are adorable together. The powers are fun at first. The kidnapper story is quite interesting and a little scarier than expected for a rom com. Ji Soo is convincing as the cop. What didn't quite work was the idiotic gangster fights. Repetitive and unfunny. Maybe too many episodes. Some drag at the end. The end is complete.

This is only the second Korean drama I have watched and I gotta say it's started an obsession. The leads are cast perfectly, Hyungsik Park is one multitalented man I sure hope he gets noticed globally. Plot was super and entertaining. Was funny, dramatic and romantic. AAA+

Entertaining, but repetitive
blebbe27 March 2022
I loved the chemistry between the two main characters. Their story was really cute too. The humor isn't the best, but it's not bad either. The love story was executed well, but the crime story on the side was repetitive and predictable.

A fresh take on typical romcoms
soumyasriv2 June 2018
I am an Indian and have recently started watching K-dramas. I would really say that this show is just so so lovely. From the perfect comic timing to mushy romantic scenes to the hints of thriller and suspense it has it all. The lead pair have crackling chemistry even though when the story is not cliche where you get a docile and submissive female lead. Park bo young is super cute and adorable that you certainly fall in love with her. I felt like crying whenever she cried and laughed when she was all happy go lucky. About the actor Park hyung sik I just loved him from the start to end. He is funny, cute, hot, emotional and have the power to make women dream about a man like him. The way he looks at Bong-Soon and caresses her in romantic scenes are so gooey and dreamy that you will fall in love with him. His expressions and emotions whenever Bong-soon shows affection towards him are just so so so good that you want to see him even more. I am appreciating it more also because most of the shows doesn't portray the emotions of the male leads so transparently but this show does that and I found it quite amusing.

The one thing I did not liked about the show were the side stories and extra humor added by other characters. I had to skip those parts as I found it quite boring and they did not contribute much to the story. I guess the leads were good enough in adding the humor quotient to the show. Instead of those parts i would have really loved to see some more romantic moments of the lead couple.

Unusual story, awesome lead couple, pretty boring supporting cast
ninchenbienchen16 August 2020
First of all:

The storyline is special because the heroine of the show is special. She literally lives up to her role of a heroine. In this story it isn't the guy who keeps saving the girl, but the girl saving literally everyone. Which makes her pretty unique in the k-drama world if you think about it. Yet she has a vulnerable side throughout the whole series which I loved, because it shows that even if you have super powers, you aren't invincible.

The leads have awesome chemistry and were just pretty awesome characters in general with the both of them being very unique in their own ways. The actors really did a great job and they are what made the lead characters so perfect and convincing. (I gotta admit my opinion might be a little biased here though because Park Hyung Sik couldn't do bad EVER in my opinion lol) Ji Soo is just Ji Soo and I feel like every character he plays has that Ji Soo mark on it. In a good way!

Oh, and the ending of the show was one of the most perfect and most satisfying ones I've seen so far because it just fulfills every wish a viewer could have about the happy ending.

Now onto the things I didn't like:

The drama is a comedy and I like comedies. But this show was sometimes over the top as in, some scenes or even characters were straight out ridiculous (yes, I'm talking about you, Team Leader). It was kind of annoying.

Also, the supporting characters were either really annoying (Baek Tak, Bong Soon's mom and her clique, Team Leader) or just boring (Bong Soon's dad, sometimes her brother) The only exception was Bong Soon's best friend and Min Hyeok's secretary. I loved them.

Plus, the side storylines of the supporting cast was really boring and unnecessary. Towards the end of the show I literally skipped their scenes because I just couldn't take it anymore.

Conclusion: unbelievably talented main cast and great lead characters, boring/annoying supporting characters, sometimes a little too uridiculous.

Bad comedy, cringe romance, boring dialogue!

Worst scene was when the bom explodes and turns into fireworks.

Still cannot believe why this drama get high rating.

Funny, heartwarming, light hearted but believable
smith-morgan20 January 2018
This show has a compelling plot involving a superpower that runs the risk of feeling immature or campy, particularly given the frequent moments of light-heartedness that break up the action and drama. It is particularly attractive not only because it watches well as a serious but because it avoids nearly all romance and action tropes that may be expected. The action and drama perfectly balanced against the comedy, and all three of these aspects were well-written and well-performed in their own right. The chemistry between the main characters is tangible and the best I have ever seen on television or in movies. This show will make you laugh and cry. Highly recommended.

Fell in love with this serie!
nanja_de_haan28 November 2018
This was my first Korean serie. My first Asian serie was the 2018 Meteor Garden, I fell in love with this serie too and watched Love 020 after that.

I saw a lot of short clips of Strong Woman and I felt really attracted to it.I'm a big romanticus and I always melt with love stories.

It got me addicted right away, Park Bo Young is a really adorable and funny girl and Park Hyung Shik made my heart melt every scene he laughed, smiled, cried, was funny and loved Do Bong Soon.

Their chemistry is so good, I felt my cheeks blushing with every romantic scene. He fell for her almost right away and she had to fall in love with him because she was still in love with policeman Guk Doo.

Besides the lovestory I really enjoyed the other storyline, it was really exciting and I couldn't stop watching because I wanted to know what was going to happen in the next episode!

This serie is also really funny, there were a lot of funny scenes and I had to laugh out loud, that normally doens't happen to me haha.

Strong Woman Do Bong soon has a special place in my heart and was an eye opener for my now discovered love for Asian series. I loved Descendants of the Sun and Something in the Rain. These kind of series makes you want to question your own life and if you finished a serie you don't know what to do with your life ;-)....

A mixed bag
wedmcdfcdjlbctenqn29 January 2022
Warning: Spoilers
I think some of the actors were really fun. Especially the main actress and her boss who had great chemistry, and also the actress who played her mother with her group of friends. I think most of the scenes involving them were entertaining to watch.

What I found weird is that 90% of the show is played as a straight up comedy (without actually being that funny tbh) where even the mob bad guys are also simply there for comedy relief. But the scenes with the abductor were pretty brutal with him seemingly raping and hitting women with steel pipes.

It would be like watching Friends, and suddenly scenes of Law and Order got mixed into the episode. I mean, it was original. But I am not entirely sure it worked.

Story wise some characters have to act incredibly stupid for the story to not have wrapped up half way through. This show has probably the most incompetent police I have ever seen in any tv show, and the heroine could have ended the abducter's crime spree after 5 episodes. We never did get any good explanation as to why she just lets him go after beating him up a bit.

This also contributed to the series losing some of it's steam in the later half of it, as it felt it was just going through the motions in order to reach 16 episodes.

This show also has some of the most blatant product placement I have seen. I wouldn't even call it product 'placement' anymore, as it's more smack dab in your face. It's there in almost every episode. Not a big minus, but it's a bit annoying.

It's still a mostly fun show with some entertaining characters which drags a bit at the end. Perfectly ok.

Fun different and with a strong female lead! ( in all senses of the word)
hanalisss12 August 2023
Strong Girl Bong Soon is an absolutely delightful kdrama that seamlessly blends romance, comedy, and fantasy elements. The charismatic chemistry between the main leads, Park Bo-young and Park Hyung-sik, is truly captivating.

The unique concept of a petite woman possessing incredible strength adds a refreshing twist to the typical rom-com formula.

The humor is both heartwarming and hilarious, keeping viewers engaged throughout and had some hilarious scenes that will make you laugh.

The storyline's balance of lighthearted moments and emotional depth makes it a must-watch for anyone seeking an uplifting and entertaining series.

Bong Bong and Min Min
lmerana2 October 2019
They are one of the best kdrama couple. I repeated watching this drama today to give this review. It has a unique story, great background, all the genres, and the acting was superb. It is hilarious but I just didn't like the part about the wine poop and the gangster's leader escapade. But everything else including the ending was satisfying. The other parts are not enough to rate this kdrama other than 10. It is a must watch for Kdrama beginners.

It isn't that great as people point it out to be.

I watched it because of the hype and to say I was disappointed is an understatement. It's okay and not part of the greatest kdramas.

Cute Young Woman Surrounded by Abuse and Incompetence
xmasinswiss17 October 2023
The lead female is cute and she's a great actress.

The two male leads in the love triangle are the typical doll-boyz from any other Korean drama, who look good and dress good, but are kinda wooden.

All other characters are simply annoying, and sometimes massively disgusting non-entities (one personage drops his dentures into a pool of urine and pops them right back into his mouth??? Just how disgusting do you want to get in a "comedy"?).

I don't know why they had to cram so much stupidity into this series. All of it is unnecessary. I have to write this off to cultural differences: Given how popular this series is, a lot of people are obviously enjoying it.

They could have made it so much better. I mean, even the "case of the week" format would have been better. Instead, our impossibly cute and endlessly strong heroine just wonders about her life, with no goal, no job, no brains, with nothing to her personality beyond cuteness and strength, striving for nothing, leaving no impact.

And what of the constant mutual abuse? Her mother verbally assaults everyone apart from the rich guy, beats up her husband until he's literally blue in his face (is it comical?), all the bosses verbally assault and beat up their subordinates, schools and workplaces are full of abuse, and so on. Really shows Korea as an abusive and unhealthy society. I didn't find this "comical" but rather sad.

The plot falls apart in the later half, we know there's a criminal but no one seems to really care.

Net, give the character a goal, a motivation we could sympathize and relate with, give us a real villain, tell us a coherent story instead of just throwing a bunch of slapstick prancing on the screen.

Oh, and cut out that self-important, patronizing, yelling, abusive "mother". Just saying "eat well" sometimes doesn't make one a good parent. Argh, she infuriated me no no end.

First, I started skipping scenes with the idiotic neighbors wearing neon pink and green because they were adding nothing to the plot. Then I started skipping scenes with the idiotic and disgusting thugs for the same reason. Then I skipped every scene with the headache-inducing mother. Then I skipped the scenes with the idiot policemen. At that point, the brainless cutesyness of the "romantic" scenes annoyed me. And then there was nothing left to watch.

A series which considers pain, broken limbs, abuse and harassment to be comical? Not for me, sorry.
