At one point, Lin-Manuel Miranda's narration is interrupted when he receives a call from Christopher Jackson, his costar from his Broadway musicals "In the Heights" and "Hamilton." Miranda drunkenly says to Jackson: "I think you're great. You're my best friend. As long as I got a job, you got a job." This is a near-quotation of a scene from the White House drama "The West Wing" in which Josh nervously confesses to his boss, Leo, that he has residual post-traumatic stress disorder from having been shot in an assassination attempt. Josh is afraid that if Leo knows the truth about his condition, Leo will no longer allow him to work for the president, but instead, Leo obliquely reminds Josh that Leo has been through his own troubles and reassures him, "as long as I got a job, you got a job, you understand?" (from the episode "Noel," S2E10). Miranda has often spoken in interviews about how much he loves "The West Wing" and how deeply Aaron Sorkin's writing affected Miranda's composition of the musical "Hamilton" (for example, in a January 2015 New York Magazine article titled "Lin-Manuel Miranda on Jay Z, The West Wing, and 18 More Things That Influenced Hamilton"). Miranda's final curtain call as a cast member of that musical was accompanied by the theme music from "The West Wing."
