A review of "The Mist" (2017)
ericrnolan3 September 2017
Although it often seemed to show far greater promise, "The Mist" TV series ultimately proved to be pretty average stuff. I'd rate the 10-episode first season a 6 out of 10.

It started strongly, with real efforts to develop compelling characters, significant tension and a tight plot. Most of the characters remained compelling. I found myself liking even Morgan Spector's protagonist Dad, who I originally thought was milquetoast. (Spector himself isn't a bad actor when his character is properly motivated.) And I found myself really liking Danica Curcic's troubled, drug-addicted antiheroine. (She's one of the best things about the show.) The young Russell Posner also does some fine work as Adrian.

But the tension that the show created with its eponymous, plot- driving "mist" fizzled toward the end, and just set me up for disappointment. Fellow monster fans, this is not a creature- feature. It directly contrasts Frank Darabont's wonderful 2007 film adaptation of Stephen King's novel, by featuring mostly supernatural threats instead of physical ones.

Our heroes facing the mist are confronted mostly by phantoms, and various iterations of … sentient snoke. (I'm guessing they are … demons? Or some other non-corporeal bad guys? At one point, are we actually meant to see the four horseman of the apocalypse kill somebody? Huh?) The antagonists' portrayal is confusing and poorly delineated, and the scare factor consequently wears off toward the end of the season. And the preponderance of CGI-smoke monsters suggests a fog machine and a limited special effects budget.

This is complicated by confusing and unexpected character decisions, which I can only suggest result from poor writing. The viewers are expected to believe that nearly everyone in a small northern town — save for maybe six or seven characters — quickly succumb to elaborate, new-age fantasies in order to turn on one another. (I'm inclined to think they'd more quickly divide along racial, economic and traditionally religious lines.)

It wasn't all bad. There were some character twists that I quite liked, and the show assiduously sets up a lot of interesting subplots. It also moved at a brisk pace, even if its scattered ending left me nonplussed. It was occasionally pretty creepy in parts, too. I certainly tuned in every week.

I think maybe I'm just a little disappointed because the trailer made this show look amazing, and, by the end, "The Mist" proved to be an average viewing experience.

Would like it renewed
viettrav-621221 September 2017
I disagree with the previous reviewer, as I hope the series will be renewed. There ARE a lot of unfinished plot lines, and I would like to see them further developed. The soap opera aspect of the series kept me coming back to find out what would happen next and would the bad guy get away with it. The most disappointing aspect of the series was its treatment of religion and faith, which was very shallow and unrealistic. A priest who never mentions Jesus? Shows that portray the church should really bring in a few Christians to consult. It's clear "Hollywood" just doesn't get it, and that's not surprising. Unless you have accepted Christ as Lord, you are blind to the truth and perishing. But at least try to make your characters more true to who they should be.

A Complete Trainwreck (Review for Season 1)
IntoGeekness25 August 2017
Warning: Spoilers
This was one of three episodes in the entire season that did not completely bore me to death. This show if I remember correctly was first being advertised as a limited series. That's why I bothered watching it, since I didn't feel like I would be obligated to have to add a new series to my list for years to come. I don't know if this will get a renewal, I hope not. But either way I am done with this terrible series. I won't even begin to comment on how they butchered Stephen King's version of this.

This series makes us, the audience endure some of the worst acting I have ever seen on television or film. It is so wooden and unrealistic I actually groaned at it. I never do that. The finale was one of their better episodes but by better I don't mean it was good in any way. The rest were just so terrible that I felt a sense of relief that I wasn't in agonizing pain with the finale. Yet it still managed to aggravate me. They left so much unfinished plot stories undone. You can tell the producers are hoping they'll get a second season. But since I won't be bothering with it again, I was hoping at least what was happening with these certain stories would get resolved. I honestly don't know if they'll even get a second season, given the terrible reviews and ratings it's received.

The other thing was the writing. It was absolute rubbish. That is probably another reason the performances were so terrible, the dialogue was painful to bear. The only actor in this that did a fine job was Frances Conroy, she's a great artist so I'm not surprised there but she did an OK job given the horrible script she was working with. The writing was very predictable, even the whole incest scenario seemed forced and just stupid. Alex the girl who was supposedly raped by her love interest Jay. Ends up being his half-sister. Of course she was raped by Adrian her best friend who had some terrible mental health problems. However when the mom revealed that her real father is the sheriff, it just doesn't feel authentic or real. To be honest by this point I stopped caring for these characters.

I usually don't whinge too much about films or TV. I try to be optimistic and get some good out of the stuff I don't particularly enjoy. But this was flat out a horrible snooze. With terrible acting, writing and cgi. Nothing worked here. If I can persuade someone to not waste their time with this. Then I feel like I did some good. Since I honestly feel I gave up ten hours of my life.

The Tenth Meal

Warning: Spoilers
The show has gotten way too ridiculous. I like that if there is a second season it will be a reboot based on the ending, but I don't like that it appears the mist is a government-controlled population cleansing device.

Way too over the top, the song they planned was really weak, but I still did have fun watching the show.

When you think it can't get worse

And then you see an old lady breastfeeding a stillborn zombie baby. Enough said. That pretty much sums up this mess...

Loved this show
taraangel-409603 January 2019
Warning: Spoilers
I loved this show, then I watched the episode and I find out that there won't be another season. I wish I'd found that out before I started watching it. Most critics don't give things a chance. And it seems that the people, critics, who are paid to watch things, and as their name implies, criticize, said that they didn't like it. Having watched movies and television shows that these said critics love, I've found that the majority of them are garbage. Makes me wonder who actually pays the 'critics'.

The last episode was good, but not an ending, But then I don't live in an ivory tower. I much prefer reviews done by us, the viewers.
