There is not a clearer example that "MacGyver" is trying to be a cheap "Hawaii Five-0" than this episode (well, they have some common people behind them). The MacGyver team are on a plane for some random stuff, holidays because MacGyver's birthday is around the corner (uh...) but an earthquake hits Hawaii and they decide to go and help (even if they are supposed to be from a think tank). They land wherever, jump into the middle of the stuff and get entangled with poor Chin Ho Kelly and Kono Kalakaua in some mysterious stuff (Daniel Dae Kim and Grace Park probably enjoying some extra cash). Seeing MacGyver and Jack disagree, Kono comments to Chin that they remind her of someone.
And here is the problem. MacGyver and Jack are not Steve McGarrett and Danno. Not even their shadows. And "MacGyver", as it says in the title, should be centered on MacGyver and his capacity to create something out of nothing and escape from any kind of situation. But XXI century MacGyver is not a show about MacGyver, but about a group of people that just don't make much sense (not even as a team; the previous episode, with annoying Bozer as a hero is a clear example; there is no reason for his character to go around with the team). There is no chemistry between the leads, the action is quite lame, the situations pathetic and the MacGyver part is actually a copy from better episodes of "Hawaii Five-0". Many of the things MacGyver does we have seen them before in the other show.
If "MacGyver" is not going to be about MacGyver... well, what is it supposed to be about?
