Pointless

Marla and Simone are madly in love and have a very passionate relationship. They are also struggling to get by and are unable to pay the rent. In desperation they decide to make porn videos.

Quite pointless. Could have been a decent exploration of how economics affects relationships, what people will do to survive or how simple plans can go awry. But no, the story goes nowhere. No point, no profundity, not even a decent story.

The writer-director clearly just wanted to make a sex-and-nudity-based movie, and even that aspect seems pretty tame.

Avoid.

The Struggle is Real

Sex Cowboys is a very cool film about two lovers facing tough times economically, who come up with the idea to shoot porn videos in an attempt to gain a fanbase so they can pay their rent and stay afloat.

I really appreciated how real the world felt. Each character has to cope with their own personal demons and face the realities of their financial/living situation, while also trying to find ways to break free and enjoy their lives. There was also a theme of yearning for better times in the past that really resonated with me.

The performances were great all around. The history and complicated relationship between Marla and Simone felt real, thanks to the terrific chemistry (both emotional and physical) between Nataly Beck'S and Francesco Maccarinelli. Federico Rosati was also great as their goofball friend who you come to empathize with.

Naturally, as you'd expect in a movie about two people shooting porn, there's a substantial amount of sex and nudity. I think the director finds a nice balance where he doesn't shy away from it, but it also doesn't get too graphic (which he shouldn't, since this is still a movie and not a straight-up porn). It all serves the larger purpose of the story.

In general, the writer-director's filming style was grounded and intimate, which allowed the viewer a real fly-on-the-wall perspective into these character's lives and emotional states. As an observer, you really feel the highs and lows that these characters go through.

The film was honest and to-the-point, with a message that will resonate with anyone who's been faced with the bitter compromise of adulthood and the longing for happier and more innocent times. Definitely check it out if you get a chance.
