The top-earning film at the box office this weekend wasn’t “Barbie,” but rather “The Meg 2: The Trench.” The Warner Bros. Discovery/Cmc Pictures shark tale earned $142 million worldwide in its global debut, including a robust $53.3 million in China.
That opening weekend was already 11% higher than “Jurassic World Dominion,” 41% above “Transformers: Rise of the Beasts” and more than double “Mission: Impossible – Dead Reckoning Part One.” It is also higher than the $50 million first weekend posted by “The Meg” in China back in August 2018.
It’s a big deal that “The Meg 2: The Trench” is performing anything like a pre-covid business-as-usual Hollywood tentpole. The key advantage might be old-fashioned star power.
The earlier Jason Statham/Li Bingbing-led actioner eventually earned $153 million of its $530 million total in the Middle Kingdom. If the sequel, which swaps Li for Wu Jing, legs out accordingly, we could see a $162 million Chinese total.

After a down year for the second-biggest moviegoing marketplace, China’s theatrical industry may be back with or without Hollywood’s help. “Black Panther: Wakanda Forever” earned just 7.5 million after four days in China, but the Middle Kingdom’s two biggest Lunar New Year releases continued to soar. “The Wandering Earth 2,” a prequel to the early-2019 disaster epic, topped 518 million, while Zhang Yimou’s period-piece suspense comedy “Full River Red” sailed past 609 million.
“This is a great reminder of what the Chinese box office looks like when it’s firing on all cylinders — strong results driven by a broad, diverse offering of films across genres from local and Hollywood filmmakers alike,” IMAX China CEO Daniel Manwaring told TheWrap.
That “The Wandering Earth 2” is not the season’s top Chinese tentpole and probably won’t match its 699 million-grossing predecessor is a slight surprise. There is a recent pattern in...

“Avengers: Endgame” has officially become the all-time top preseller on Fandango, beating the record set in 2015 by “Star Wars: The Force Awakens,” Fandango said Thursday.
The ticketing website also reported that more than 8,000 screenings nationwide have sold out, with thousands more being created over the past three weeks to meet the overwhelming demand. In its first week of presales, “Endgame” sold five times as many advance tickets as “Avengers: Infinity War” in the same time period.
“It’s pacing to be our biggest box office weekend of all time,” said Fandango Managing Editor Erik Davis. “We’ve never seen so many new screens and new showtimes added to meet the demand. I expect fans to go back for repeat viewings of ‘Endgame’ throughout the weekend to catch all the things they missed in the film’s three-hour running time.”

“Avengers: Endgame” got off to an epic start at the box office in China, earning $28.2 million at midnight on Tuesday. Disney is estimating that at 10:50 p.m. local time, Marvel’s blockbuster is on pace for a $107.2 million (Rmb 719M) estimated opening, which combines the midnight total with Wednesday’s approximate $79 million total.
The total crushes the $9.1 million from the midnight screening numbers set by “Furious 8.” And it would be by far the highest ever opening night in China box office history, passing the opening day for local release “Monster Hunt 2” ($85 million/Rmb 547M).
By 8:40 p.m. local time in China, “Endgame” had crossed $74.3 million according to China Box Office, and tallies just keep climbing. “Endgame” also earned a reported $90 million in presale totals.

“Avengers: Endgame” is breaking records in China, raking in more than $100 million on its opening day Wednesday – two days ahead of the U.S. – and putting itself firmly on track to become the biggest Hollywood title ever in the Middle Kingdom.
Disney forecast that its new tentpole would end the day with about $107.2 million (RMB719 million), including midnight and wee-hour showings that began Tuesday night and ran into early Wednesday. By about 9 p.m. local time Wednesday, the Marvel finale had hauled in $102 million (RMB681 million), according to China Box Office. That easily gives “Endgame” the record for the biggest opening day in Chinese history, surpassing domestic film “Monster Hunt 2” (which did not have midnight previews).
“Endgame” had also already set a new all-time record for ticket pre-sales, selling more than $110 million worth ahead of its Tuesday night midnight opening to beat “Monster Hunt 2,” which sold $59.6 million. It...

At the time of writing, filmgoers in China are still in the midst of their first Avengers: Endgame screenings. But even before the movie first hit theaters in the Middle Kingdom, the Avengers: Infinity War sequel was already breaking commercial records.
Earlier this month, it was reported that the flick managed to sell more than 1 million advance tickets in a record-breaking six hours, and it seems that the film has continued to enjoy phenomenal pre-sales ever since. According to The Hollywood Reporter, Endgame reached a whopping $90 million in advance ticket sales, beating the all-time record previously held by Monster Hunt 2, which managed just under $60 million last year.
What’s more, the film is estimated to have earned more than $20 million in midnight previews alone, more than doubling the $9.1 million record set by The Fate of the Furious in 2017. From here, it’s projected that the feature could earn as...

No big revelations this year at the 38th Hong Kong Film Awards. The Sunday night ceremony has unveiled all the winners for this years Awards and they are all quite an easy guess. Felix Chong’s thriller “Project Gutenberg” was the star of the evening as, predictably – considering its 17 nominations – won Best Film along with other 6 Awards.

This week, China rings in the New Year, and as annual tradition has it, multiplexes will be stuffed with new local titles vying for big business during the lucrative holiday period. Of the more than 10 pictures releasing Tuesday, among the most anticipated are epic The Wandering Earth, which could be the breakout that ignites the homegrown sci-fi business; racing-themed comedy Pegasus from multi-talent Han Han; and Peppa Pig Celebrates Chinese New Year, based on the hugely popular kids character.

Chinese animation “White Snake” slithered to a weekend win, as theatrical box office in China, ahead of the Lunar New Year holidays, slipped to the lowest total of the past two years. “Snake” scored with just $9 million.
The film has now accumulated $64.5 million since its Jan. 11 release, according to data from entertainment consultancy Artisan Gateway. That makes “Snake” the biggest film to date from producer Lightchaser Animation Studios, and one of the top-performing Chinese-made animation films.
In the absence of competition from new releases, “Once Upon a Deadpool” and “Bumblebee” kept going. The expurgated version of “Deadpool 2” earned $7.3 million for a cumulative of $41.8 million, while “Transformers” spinoff “Bumblebee” earned $5.2 million, to advance its total to $170 million and confirm its status as the biggest film released in 2019 in China. “Escape Room” added $5.2 million for a $33.9 million total. Chinese-made “The Big Shot” added $2.7 million to its total, lifting its cumulative to $56.3 million.

Winter is here for the Chinese entertainment industry, a half-dozen top-tier industry professionals concurred in Beijing at the launch last week of Tencent Entertainment’s annual data-filled white paper.
China’s box office hit new heights in 2018, raking in about $9 billion, but it was also a year of drastic regulatory changes and a government tax crackdown that have spooked investors and put projects across the country on hold.
“Why call this period a ‘cold winter’? In 2018, 20 film and TV companies saw RMB160 billion of stock market value evaporate, while eight saw their valuation fall by more than 50%. The departure of capital has also made the entire film industry encounter unprecedented difficulties,” said Bona Film Group CEO Yu Dong, who was present to receive an award for “trending movie figure of the year.” Bona-backed “Operation Red Sea” was the top film at the Chinese box office last year, grossing more than $530 million (RMB3.65 billion).

Theatrical box office in Hong Kong grew by nearly 6% in 2018. Gross takings hit Hk$1.96 billion, compared with Hk$1.85 billion in 2017, according to data from Hong Kong Box Office Ltd.
As the Hong Kong dollar is closely pegged to its American counterpart, most of that gain can be translated into U.S. dollar gains. Using year-end exchange rates, Hong Kong’s theatrical business was worth $250 million in 2018, compared with $237 million in 2017.
Foreign-made films continued to enjoy the largest share of the Hong Kong theatrical business. In 2018, the top eight places were occupied by Hollywood franchise movies, though, unusually, two Korean titles – “Along With the Gods: The Two Worlds” and its sequel, “The Last 49 Days” – took ninth and 10 places, with $6.96 million (Hk$54.4 million) and $6.17 million (Hk$48.2 million), respectively.
“Avengers: Infinity War” was far and away the year’s highest-scoring film in Hong Kong, with $19.6 million (Hk$153 million), ahead of “Jurassic World: Fallen Kingdom,...

Updated with top film figures: IMAX has set itself a new milestone, crossing $1B at the 2018 worldwide box office. This is the first time in the company’s 50-year history that it has reached the benchmark. The group’s global tally, expected to be $1.002B by the end of today, was driven primarily by Hollywood blockbusters, but also includes another IMAX record with local-language pics accounting for more than $100M of the total.
Disney/Marvel movies lead the Hollywood pack with Avengers: Infinity War and Black Panther the Nos. 1 and 2 earners. Warner Bros/DC’s Aquaman, currently at No. 6, is still in play and should reach No. 4 by December 31. On the local-language side, eight of the major titles hail from China, a market that regularly throws off strong returns for the large-format outfit. They include Operation Red Sea, Detective Chinatown 2 and Dying To Survive. (See below for the full Top 10 lists.

‘Shadow’ climbs one place to second.
Following a rather disappointing weeklong National Day holiday, the second week of October (Oct 8-14) remained weak as it shrunk by 65.8% week-on-week.
The National Day titles continued to dominate the chart, with no new releases in the top five. Felix Chong’s Project Gutenberg, with Chow Yun Fatt and Aaron Kwok, topped again on $36.6m.

Upbeat Hong Kong stories that bring audience laughter and optimism rather than highly stylized dramas about heavy subjects could be the antidote for an industry struggling with its identity in the post-handover era, according “Men on the Dragon” director Sunny Chan.

2018 is halfway over already, so now is a good moment to cast our eyes back over the last six months, and more specifically, the cinematic offerings that emerged from Asia. Traditionally the first half of the year tends to be weaker, and certainly most of the Chinese New Year offerings left plenty to be desired. Chen Kaige's Legend of the Demon Cat, Raman Hui's Monster Hunt 2, Soi Cheang's The Monkey King 3 and Chen Sicheng's Detective Chinatown 2 all managed to underwhelm, while the endless barrage of sub-par Japanese and Korean dramas and thrillers was as relentless as it was soul-crushing. That said, Korean offerings like Little Forest, Be With You and I Can Speak weren’t bad at all, while Colour...

Local blockbusters “Operation Red Sea” and “Detective Chinatown 2” powered the Chinese box office to its best-ever first six months of the year, with domestic productions accounting for nearly 60% of receipts, a significant increase from the same period last year.
According to the half-year industry report from China’s Ent Group, box office as of Friday for the first six months of 2018 totaled 31.6 billion yuan ($4.77 billion), with 889 million viewers, up more than 16% from the 27.2 billion yuan ($4.1 billion) recorded in the first half of 2017.
Domestic productions accounted for 18.8 billion yuan ($2.8 billion), or 59.6%, of the total. It was a huge increase from the 10.5 billion yuan ($1.59 billion) that accounted for 39% of total box office during the same period last year. Of the 40 movies released this year that have achieved more than 100 million yuan ($15 million), 18 were domestic productions.
The wild success of homegrown films was driven largely by military blockbuster “Operation Red Sea” and crime thriller “Detective Chinatown 2.

Leading Hong Kong actor, Tony Leung Chiu-wai and Jettone, the Wong Kar-wai-owned company that has represented him for the past 28 years, have gone their separate ways.
According to reports in Apple Daily, Carina Lau, Leung’s wife and major star in her own right, will temporarily act as his manager. Jettone did not respond to inquiries by Variety. In North America, Leung is represented by Wme.
Leung has been the star of numerous films by Wong Kar-wai, including “Happy Together,” “In The Mood for Love,” and “The Grandmaster,” all of which were produced by Jettone. The company also produced the ill-fated comedy “See You Tomorrow,” in which Leung starred and where Wong was required to take a significant behind the scenes directing role in support of first timer Zhang Jiajia.

Update, Writethru: Universal Pictures/Amblin Entertainment’s Jurassic World: Fallen Kingdom has come in above yesterday’s estimates with $151.1M in its international box office opening. T-Rex banged a gong in 48 markets this weekend with the J.A. Bayona-directed Jwfk No. 1 in each, including some record debuts.
The release pattern here differs from the day-and-date global blowout on 2015’s Jurassic World which rebooted the franchise. That film opened to $158.6M in like-for-like markets and at today’s exchange rates, and Jwfk’s bow is 5% below that.
On Saturday, the return to, and escape from, Isla Nublar was estimated to be coming in with $145.9M for the launch weekend. Today’s $151.1M estimate now exceeds the high-end of the range that industry sources were seeing ahead of the bow. It also exceeds the international cume of Solo: A Star Wars Story which is at $136.1M after three frames.

By 10 p.m. Friday in China, the film had earned $66 million (RMB423 million) on its first full day of release, according to data from China Box Office. That gave it a 96% share of all cinema revenues in China that day.
The $66 million came on top of about $9.3 million earned in previews Thursday, according to Ent Group. That gives the superhero tentpole an estimated opening total of close to $76 million.
Disney reported pre-sales and midnight screening figures of $65.4 million for the three-day opening weekend. That is an all-time record for Disney in the Middle Kingdom.
“Avengers: Age of Ultron” has the highest full opening-weekend score for the “Avengers” franchise with $156 million, which is also the fourth-highest opening score of any film released in China. “Monster Hunt 2,” released during the...

“Avengers: Infinity War” reached $1.25 billion at the global box office on Thursday, and this weekend the hit movies is expected to storm into the top ten highest-grossing films of all time. That’s in large part because the Marvel film is finally opening in China, where interest in it has hit highs never before reached by a superhero movie in the country.
Estimates for ticket presales for “Avengers” have reached approximately $50 million, topping the country’s presale record set by “Monster Hunt 2” earlier this year and doubling the best presale performance by a Hollywood import, which was last year’s “The Fate of the Furious” with $25 million.

That’s not a guarantee “Infinity War” will pass either of those films on China’s box office charts, but it does show there’s as much interest in Marvel in the country as there is anywhere else in the world — and certainly more than Disney’s other big IP, “Star Wars,” which hasn’t had the same impact in the Middle Kingdom as it has elsewhere. China Film Insider analyst Jonathan Papish told TheWrap that over the past several years, audiences have turned up for films that offer more than one superhero.
“Solo superhero films seemed to have hit a plateau. They don’t get far beyond $100 million,” said Papish of trends among moviegoers in China. “But ensemble films like ‘Avengers’ and, to a lesser extent, ‘Captain America: Civil War,’ have gathered more interest.”

Papish added that the third “Avengers” film likely won’t sell many tickets among general audiences and in smaller Chinese markets, so weekday numbers should be muted. But hardcore Marvel fans should give it strong numbers in the weekends ahead, especially considering that “Deadpool 2,” which will draw away the comic book movie crowd in other countries starting next weekend, doesn’t have a release date in China.
The only major Hollywood import coming for the next three weeks that might be a speed bump for “Avengers” is “A Quiet Place,” John Krasinski’s horror movie that has become Paramount’s biggest domestic hit in nearly three years. But other than that, “Avengers” is expected to be China’s main blockbuster offering until “Jurassic World: Fallen Kingdom” arrives on June 15.
This means that when all is said and done, “Infinity War” could set a new Chinese record for superhero movies, beating the $240 million made by “Avengers: Age of Ultron” three years ago. Between China’s opening and the holdover performance from the rest of the world (the film is expected to make $55-$60 million in its third weekend in the U.S.) “Infinity War” should make enough to become one of the top five highest grossing films of all-time and beat the all-time summer record set by 2015’s “Jurassic World” with $1.67 billion.

And if Thanos’ invasion especially over-performs in China, “Avengers” might have a chance of becoming only the third film ever — and first released in the summer — to gross $2 billion worldwide. It has already broken the global record as the film to fastest reach $1 billion.
“Whether or not the film hits $2 billion, I think the bigger story is how this film performs in a still-developing Chinese market,” said BoxOffice magazine managing editor Daniel Loria. “The Marvel Cinematic Universe has grown alongside the buying power of the Chinese box office, so it’s always difficult to directly compare how one superhero film does against another as more and more cineplexes and premium screens get added each year.”
“It will be interesting to see how an event film like this does in such a rapidly-growing market, and whether we see a big turn out at IMAX locations like we’ve seen in the rest of the world.”

Marvel Disney's Avengers: Infinity War is revving up to make a massive start in the Chinese film market, the world's second-biggest box-office territory.
The mega-tentpole had notched $47.5 million (Rmb 302 million) in presales as of late Wednesday night in Beijing. With a full day to go before the local release Friday, Infinity War has set a new all-time ticket presales record in China, surpassing the estimated Rmb 300 million (about $47 million at today's exchange rate) earned by Edko Film's Monster Hunt 2 during the lead-up to Chinese New Year in January.

The first quarter of 2018 is behind us, and for the first time, total box office in China beat domestic totals. Grosses for China in Q1 totaled $3.17 billion, compared to $2.85 billion in North America. Those figures reflect a 39 percent increase in China over the same period in 2017. Here, domestic totals fell two percent. On the one hand, none of this is surprising. We’ve long believed that China overtaking North America as the top market was inevitable; at 1.3 billion, it has four times the population.
And while Chinese theaters return a much lower percentage of the gross, American studios have looked to the Far East as a major guarantor of future growth and profits. So maybe this is good news? Not really. Although this quarter probably won’t reflect the full year, China’s success doesn’t bode well because it had almost nothing to do with the studios.

As expected, last week “Black Panther” passed $1 billion worldwide when China opened to strong numbers. Overseas, the Marvel title now ranks above nearly all recent comic-book movie adaptations. Next week, it should cross $600 million in North America. This is wonderful news on many levels: For Marvel and for Disney, certainly; for diversity representation in the blockbuster realm. But what “Black Panther” can’t do is uplift the rest of the marketplace: Where “Black Panther” has soared this year, most releases lag.
The simplest way to compare year-over-year box office is to check the respective box office totals year to date. By that standard, 2018 looks terrific at the moment; we’re up eight percent.
However, by this point last year, we had five films — “Split,” “The Lego Batman Movie,” “Fifty Shades Darker,” “Logan,” and “Kong: Skull Island” — open to over $40 million. “Get Out” opened a little below that, but already earned $100 million.

The snow may have caused widespread disruption to this weekend’s cinema-going, with many people around the country stuck in their homes or turning up to shuttered venues, but those who did brave the elements still delivered strong results for Black Panther, which fell only 46% in comparison with the previous weekend.
