Quite alright for me.
Patient44414 October 2019
The Young Cannibals brought a nice premise, a good execution, ok actors/dialogue, overall I was intrigued and had fun with this one. In the woods horrors are quite possibly the easiest ones to make, right there next to zombies, yet this one managed to bring something new to the table. Just a little more that you'd expect, but it made quite the difference.

So if you're a fan of the genre, don't go in expecting a masterpiece, but be prepared to see more than the usual, a genuine plot that evolves throughout the movie, characters that have more than one layer and...well I wish I could say more about the monster but probably the budget just couldn't cover for a better one.

Still, it was a pleasant surprise thus I will recommend it.

Cheers!

Actually not bad at all for a low budget UK horror
omendata2 October 2019
I always try and write a balanced review based on many things including the budget and genre.

Most low budget horrors these days are awful but this is not that bad compared to most.

For a start it is a bit bizarre and i like bizarre, odd , weird and the creature effects are rather well done for the budget. Add in the excellent although overpoweringly loud old style Claudio Simonetti'esque synth music and it does give somewhat of an atmosphere as well as the spooky location which most low budget horror fails to achieve.

The opening scene was excellent and did give hope that the rest may be as good but although it did not quite meet up to initial expectations it is by my definition an average horror and certainly does not deserve anything less than a 5/10.

Not the worst debut I've seen
umimelectric2 October 2019
My original review was pretty tough on these guys, and immediately received 3 'unhelpful' votes which leads me to believe that the filmmakers are keeping a close eye on their imdb page, which then prompted me to check out their profile on here and when I saw that this was their first feature-length film, I felt some remorse over my harsh review. With that in mind, I don't have the same feelings about it. I still think it's a 3/10 but I don't think this work deserves to be insulted. For a couple of independent directors to make this film, that's a pretty good accomplishment. Instead of trashing this debut, I'd rather say keep working at it, there's potential here. It wasn't a complete waste of my time but it wasn't anything remarkable, but that's alright. There will be those who receive this movie well, but it just wasn't for me. I'm not the type of person who wants to complain about an independent project as soon as it's released, especially one that the filmmakers and crew probably didn't receive much of a financial return on. Give it a try if you like gore and creature features. It's worth a watch just for the great soundtrack alone.

Small budget horror with a decent atmosphere
LoremIpsum3212 October 2019
You won't be overwhelmingly surprised by what's happening, there's no spectacular plot, but that's normal for the genre anyway. The atmosphere is well created in my opinion, mainly thanks to the soundtrack that fits well, pictoresque terrain and quite good actors (tho some characters were a bit annoying). The directing was alright, yet some editing seemed weird, maybe to save some dosh on special effects regarding the monster having dinner. Pretty solid for a film that most probably had a rather small budget.

Far from the worst horror film but..
jacobelsonix2 August 2021
Warning: Spoilers
I believe the film is set in Snowdonia? So how do they walk for 2+ days without finding some sort of civilization? They could of literally walked across the country in that time far away from any monster.

Pretty bad writing but everything else about the film is impressive for a low budget.

Actually ok for what it is

Its actually pretty good for the genre. Some scenes are just painful but overall with a name like "Young Cannibals" don't expect anything other than its genre.

Wow...

I'm watching as I'm typing this. The lead chick, the one that broke out of the nuthouse - I'm so disturbed by those caterpillars over her eyes, that it's hard to concentrate on the movie... 🤣

I liked the beginning
jordan224027 February 2021
Seemed to have some promise when it started out, up until the point where the kids were left in the woods (and why the old nutjob left the van with them rather than tossing them out and driving off, no one will ever know). After that, it got pretty boring because there was just too much time between attacks, and I started fast-forwarding to see if there was any decent gore (and there was some). The monster looked like someone dressed in a monster suit, so wasn't particularly scary. For me, the real entertainment I get out of a monster flick is either comedy or gore (or both), and this didn't have enough of either. The ending was kind of funny though (the real ending, not the little scene at the end of the credits)

Dull Cannibal Horror
timothygartin29 July 2020
This movie has an interesting premise, but it goes nowhere. The acting is poor and the story is hard to understand for as simple as I think it is supposed to be. At the end of the day, not much happens and not much is scary. Its below average cannibal horror.

The monster we ... made
kosmasp30 May 2023
No pun intended - sometimes a monster is something literal ... something we project. Of course as the cover and poster already reveal we have quite the physical monster here. But can you really see it? Sorry for another pun I reckon, but I had to.

This is quite low budget and if you like horror movies, you could do worse than watching this one. As the next movie made quite clear - next movie I watched that is. This right here is into the woods and has quite the strong opening ... one that suggests that the movie may be better than the final product even? Well you'll be the judge of that. Good effects overall and maybe one twist too many ... still decent overall.

It's not a ten-star movie, but it's a ten-star effort
oscar_ray2_jimenez19 June 2021
...hence my note. I'm not a production shill nor an idiot. I'm not comparing this movie to, say, Rosemary's Baby by giving it that rating, but I have no problem admitting that I really felt the urge to try to compensate a bit for the unfair average that it's holding currently - a 4 out of 10 as I write this -. It's a nice, low-budget creature feature made by and for people with a lot of love for 80's horror, and it shows. They achieved a nice atmosphere, cinematography was okay and made good use of the locations, camerawork was competent and, generally speaking, they achieved something that, for my money, is a nice and entertaining creature-in-the-woods flick that held my attention and didn't felt like it was insulting my intelligence.

Oh, by the way, I'm sure that some people will downvote this review just because of what I'm about to say, but I don't care - I'm sure that it might help some people who come in here and look at reviews to help decide what to watch on movie night -: this movie is completely, 100% woke-free. As this is becoming something increasingly rare and, consequently, sought-after by certain people, I'm certain that this PA bit is bound to be helpful for someone.

To the filmmakers, good job and thank you. Please make more, I'm eager to support them as you keep making them.

"There's something in the woods" - just don't get your hopes up
Stevieboy66624 March 2023
Ethan (Benjamin Sarpona-Broni) breaks girlfriend Nat (Megan Purvis) out of a psych ward and together they drive off to the British countryside in his old VW Polo for a spot of camping with friends. Landowner Blackwood (David Patrick Stucky, who talks with a weird British/American accent) tricks/forces them into eating burgers made of human flesh, this then summons some strange creature that hunts cannibals! Originality is great but this is just ludicrous. Much of the running time has our unhappy campers being chased through the woods at night, this just goes on and on and on. I wouldn't blame anybody for hitting the fast forward button, at 140 minutes this is too long for a film such as this. If you suffer with insomnia then I would recommend this movie. Some of the mountain scenery (shot in the beautiful Snowdonia) is stunning. Acting quality varies between poor and OK. Being a cannibal movie you would expect gore and yes there is some but not enough to salvage this mess. One goof that caught my eye was that Ethan's VW is a N plate registration (1995/96) yet at the end when it catches fire it has an R plate (1997/98) on the rear. The movie is quite well shot, I'm sure that there is some talent here but sadly this was a boring head scratcher of a movie. There is a post end credits scene but don't lose any sleep if you missed it.

a trip to the countryside
ops-525351 October 2019
If youre in for a proffesionally made slasher horror movie, the young cannibals may not be the best choice.

but if your in for a carnivourous, psychopatic minced meat grinding cannibalistic mayhem made on a rather above average amateur level, then it might be something for you too devoure. if youre a vegan you will fall out completely safe, your botanical bodyfluids does not attract the blood tasting molars in this flick.

its a blend of eager acting and experimental film making on a low budget, the story are not strong and the editor may have hands like edward so behold....

the grumpy old man acknowledge some of the work, but not the meat gnarling parts.but its better than 1.

Yeah its terrible
wildblueyonder27 June 2020
I'd give it one star but I did actually make it all the way through the movie, albeit while doing something else.

I wasn't surprised, but I do sometimes give a movie that looks horrible a chance and every once in a while am rewarded... this is not that once in a while. This is mindless crap - you've been warned.

Who Funds these films???
nsjb-4132225 December 2022
Warning: Spoilers
Okay so the general idea is okay but its executed in a very shikaka way.

Firstly its another "woman worship" film. Whats "Woman Worship" well a certain Andrew Tate said it best, "If women can do things as good as men then tell the feminists to grab their guns get on a plain and go liberate Afghanistan from the Taliban so "Women" can go to university" I hate these types of films, they drag on and they don't make any sense. 5 minutes in and you're thinking what tripe.

The "Men" are killed off and guess what "women" are left to fight off a totally inconsistent creature who somehow only killed cannibals and guess what these teenagers are gifted burgers which are made from human flesh but somehow look like beef burgers because the writer thinks human flesh has the same consistency colour and texture as beef? Then the farmer who gifted them the burgers kidnaps them to leave them in the woods. They have all day to walk to safety but guess what they're too thick to do that, simple things that you would take on a camping trip they don't take, like correct boots, clothing survival equipment, quite frankly I blame the women..... They're freezing outside in the forest but nobody thinks of making a fire to keep warm or maybe to make a torch from the fire and defend themselves from the creature?

So if I was camping , I need basic supplies like, drinking water, first aid kit, a knife, rope, and a little knowhow on camping and survival, not to mention I wouldn't be taking anything off anybody such as meat.

And why doesn't the creature eat "non cannibals? Seriously if it only eats cannibals then what happens when you run out of cannibals? Go Vegan? Or what?

Its a Stupid film dont waste your time.

Disappointing horror-attempt.
johannes2000-130 May 2022
Why on earth did they come up with such a complicated and nonsensical characteristic for the monster (namely it specifically attacks and subsequently eats people that themselves have eaten human flesh), it adds nothing to the rest of the story and makes the mere existence of the monster just as enigmatic as it already was! The monster itself is rather unimpressive (it seemed to be nothing more than a guy in a creepy suit), and its eating people alive was mostly restricted to taking a big bite out-of someone's neck, hardly the voracious devouring that you might expect or had hoped for. So the score on gore was (apart from an encouraging openings scene) disappointingly low.

The acting is reasonable, the atmosphere is pleasantly creepy, but at several times the pace sagged and all the aimless wandering through the dark forest became a bit repetitive and tedious. In spite of some stupid actions of the last girl standing we did get a satisfying finale, but overall my (hardly) lasting impression is: forgettable.

Not bad, but not very good either
jisabeau13 February 2022
Warning: Spoilers
The intro is actually really good, and lures you in - albeit it quickly feels like you've been tricked into watching this, hoping for something more.

The movie definitely had potential, with a pretty scary idea, and it doesn't blame teems for veing teens either, which is good.

However, there are so many things that could have been tweaked just slightly, and this movie would have been amazing. For example having the scene where the murderer chops up meat in a dirty basement, isn't necessary; simply having made him an actual butcher where these people are them lured into buying and eating human meat is a populartrope for a reason. Just being a random old man in a dirty basement giving out free meat is so strange.

Another example is the silly burger making scene. Its stupid and unnecessary for the plot. It doesn't add anything else than confusion to what genre of movie you're watching, and it's not even funny.

Another thing is the slow slow intro to our main chatacters. We didn't need to see them escaping the hospital, we didn't need to see their whole elaborate plan to escape, they could simply have given Main Girl permission to leave, and that would have been it.

The movie plays into the typical teen stereotypes: Hot Girly Girl not fit for camping, Suicidal Teen, Fat Teen (who is also vegan) and Stupid Cool Boy whom the writers must have been really into, since he's given relatively much screen time for dying super quickly. Christian Girl is also a stereotype I'm really tired off. None of the girls even seem like friends, so why would they go camping? None of the guys seem that great friends either, which makes the whole thing super awkward.

This movie would have been great, had they not spoiled that this was human meat right away: it would have added some suspense if the "teens" didn't know and had to find out on their own.

No nudity or sex scenes was a plus though, because they rarely adds to the plot.

My take away from this movie was, that I atheist learned how horror shouldn't be done, which is a good thing to learn I guess, though sad for the film.

There's something in the woods.
nogodnomasters3 October 2019
Warning: Spoilers
The film opens with a modern-day Donner Party surviving after a plane crash. Seem they have awoken a monster that eats people for eating people.

Nat (Megan Purvis) is in a mental hospital after attempting suicide. Her boyfriend (Benjamin Sarpong-Broni ) helps her escape on her birthday as they go camping with family and friends. The owner of the campground treats the kids to human meat burgers, making them desirable for the monster to feed upon. Apparently intent doesn't enter the picture. His logic is if he feeds the monster other people, it will leave him alone and apparently it can travel the world looking for him.

It is a good monster in the woods film. one that deviates from killing teens who have sex. Good screams, horror, and jump scares.

Guide: F-word. No sex or nudity.

A film about cannibalism where not much happens
Coffee_in_the_Clink10 April 2023
The low-rating for "The Young Cannibals" with a consensus that it is a bad film, would lead one to believe that its shoestring budget is to blame. But that is not the case. Like myself, anyone who watches a film like this enjoys low-budget horrors and keeps an open-mind, but what "The Young Cannibals" ultimately suffers from is the basic writing - nothing happens. Most of the film consists of the characters running and screaming in the woods. When the monster does appear, it looks half-decent, but then it is back to more monotonous running around and screaming. It is wasted from a lack of imagination.

Wouldn't have thought a film about cannibalism could be so boring.

Not as bad as others reviews state but had the potential for greatness
ritchieboswell24 February 2021
Warning: Spoilers
No way does this movie deserve anything under a 4, I can see why people thought that but I think they are wrong. I really enjoyed this movie. However there are some GLARING flaws in this movie that had me shouting at my TV.

The movie attempts to do the 'stereotypical group of teenagers try and escape monster in forest' and it works but it could've been so, so much better. It could've been on the same level of THE DESCENT with a few changes.

What I liked about the movie:

  • Acting was good for the majority of it but some scenes had me confused, bored or just thinking: 'Don't think that's plausible but okay'
  • The score for this movie was borderline perfect!!
  • The premise of the movie outside of the teenagers try and escape monster (Wendigo mythology) was actually very well executed for the most part with some big exceptions.
  • Unique and interesting monster
  • Ending and post credits scene was well done and left me feeling like sequels were both plausible and wouldn't feel forced or unnatural.
  • didn't rely on countless fake outs or jumpscares, there were a couple towards the end but they were predictable and not as cheap as other movies.

What I dislike about the movie:

  • Lack of consistency, from the quality of the dialogue/acting and scenes to the monster and the rules it abides by. There was a blatant lack of consistency, one minute the monster is invisible, then it can be seen, one minute it's slowly stalking its prey and the next it's swiping people out from under each other like Swiper from Dora the explorer or growling and dive bombing through doors like Juggernaut. Most of the scenes were very good but some left me going "oh for fucks sake", or "really?", like when the Final Girl's brother wants to stay by the van but the group decided that's a bad idea, instead of picking a pointless fight he should've either tried to convince the group why that was the 'right' idea, go back to the van himself like is suggested by everyone else or continue to tag along with the group and shut up about it (or have the Wendigo rush and attack him forcing the group to move). Additionally, when the Final Girl's best friend refuses to cover herself in guts to survive, now it's not the fact she didn't dive head first into said guts like her friend (I mean if you don't want to survive that's on your head) it's that the scene takes too long to move on. I get that theres a dying friend there but she literally didn't say anything to her just stood there ummm-ing and ahhh-ing like she was trying to decide what she was ordering off of a menu. Also one thing that annoyed me was the inconsistency of the accent from the guy who fed them the human burgers, one minute he sounds English or Scottish and then he sounds American. Just pick an accent my friend, that being said though all the actors did an amazing job in their roles for the most of the film.

Now if I was to give key points to the writers and directors (I know they were the same people) it would be that considering this is your first movie you did an AMAZING job, I've seen plenty of worse movies done by bigger companies, directors, actors and budget. The inconsistency was the biggest issue here. If the inconsistency's were fixed this could be the next Descent. There were so many times I was sat watching thinking "If only they did *this*". Next pointer would be to create rules that your Wendigo abides by and stick. to. them. If you want it only to be visible to cannibals that's fine but then make it visible to the cannibals for the entire film not just for part of it. Early on in the film it was so frustrating watching characters blatantly stare at the monster but there to be nothing there when it's hiding behind a single leaf. If you want it to stalk stealthily and hunt its prey, that's fine, if you want it to rely on its senses (mainly smell) that's fine but stick to what you decide. The monster felt sporadic and random and not in the good "it could kill them in many ways" but in the "why the hell is it doing that" kind of way. The reason this movie annoyed the ever living hell out of me was because it has so much potential, it was so close to being something outstanding but it cocks it up from the start. Now that being said I did enjoy the movie, only reason I wrote this review was to let Directors/Writers know they were so close to greatness. I believe we need more higher quality horror movies and it's obvious this wasn't some cheap tacky cash grab it was a well thought out (for the most part) planned movie based around the lore of the Wendigo. I think this movie could be saved if they re-shot the movie with the inconsistencies fixed. Obviously I know the chances of that happening are pretty much never, or at least take the advice and implement it into a sequel as I feel there is room for one or even two more movies. Maybe a sequel and a prequel, one explaining the events after the Young Cannibals as it's obvious it's still alive and one explaining what happened properly on that Mountain before the events of the movie.

A pretty good low budget movie.
lord-blade24 October 2020
Overall Young Cannibals is your typical low budget horror flick. Not a great movie, but not bad. It did a decent job with what it was given. The actors are pretty good, the monster effects were decent, and the story is actually rather original.

The main two problems I had with the movie was that it took a while to start. They spent about half an hour setting up the plot, which was excessive. They could have basically had it all done in about 5 minutes and gotten the ball rolling. A bit too much of an attempt at being deep and artistic. It's a low budget horror, it's not art, so don't try.

Second issue was that the monster's rules were kind of erratic. Sometimes it's the slow creeping doom that stalks up on them. Other times it seems to be able to instantly appear wherever it needed to be. It might be methodical at one point, and then be able to grab someone and vanish like a ninja in a heartbeat. I think they needed to nail that down to be more consistent.

Other than that, it's a quite enjoyable movie. Nothing award winning, but a decent way to kill an evening.
