Rafe Spall (Trying), Greg Kinnear (Black Bird), Ntare Guma Mbaho Mwine (The Lincoln Lawyer) and Hannah Emily Anderson (The Purge) round out the ensemble cast of Firebug, Apple’s upcoming drama series, from Apple Studios and creator Dennis Lehane, starring and executive produced by Taron Egerton.
In addition to Egerton, the four join previously announced Jurnee Smollett and John Leguizamo.
Written by Lehane and loosely inspired by true events, Firebug will follow a troubled detective and an enigmatic arson investigator (Egerton) as they pursue the trails of two serial arsonists.
In addition to starring, Egerton will serve as executive producer alongside Richard Plepler through Eden Productions, Dan Friedkin and Bradley Thomas through Imperative Entertainment and Kary Antholis.
Spall currently stars in Apple TV+’s parenting comedy Trying, which is entering its fourth season. His film credits include Jurassic World: Fallen Kingdom. Spall is repped by UTA and B-Side Management.

Ethan Hawke is taking a Big Bad turn. The Academy Award-nominated actor will star opposite Oscar Isaac (Show Me a Hero) in Disney+’s forthcoming Moon Knight series, based on the Marvel comics, sources tell The Hollywood Reporter.
The exact details of Hawke’s character are unknown, but he will reportedly play the lead villain of the show, which centers around the superhero Moon Knight (reportedly played by Isaac but never officially confirmed, in true Marvel fashion). Moon Knight’s alter ego, Marc Spector, is a billionaire who uses his wealth to fund/trick out his heroic exploits. A former CIA agent and mercenary,...

Even by modern standards where virtually every moderately successful low budget horror gets multiple sequels, The Purge has done very well for itself, and is now regarded as one of hit factory Blumhouse’s most bankable brands. The first installment was a low budget home invasion thriller that cost just $3 million to make, but went on to earn close to $90 million at the box office.
That kind of profit margin made more outings almost inevitable, and the scope has gradually widened with each new outing. We’ve seen two direct follow-ups, a prequel and a TV series that ran for two seasons before being canceled last year, with the four theatrical movies so far raking in over $446 million globally on combined production costs of $35 million.

Once upon a time, The Purge franchise felt like it existed wholly in the realm of fiction. But in the years since the first film has been released, The Purge‘s imagery of American run wild has begun to feel uncomfortably prescient. Unlike other hits to come from Blumhouse over the past decade, “The Purge” started as a simple, but clever horror franchise and morphed into a political satire that mixes over-the-top violence and imagery with a very serious message. And according to the director of the franchise’s finale, “The Forever Purge,” which arrives later this year, the final film in the ‘Purge’ series is going to wrap up the story and fully explain the satire that some people might have missed in earlier entries.

The Purge was only released back in 2013, but even now, the events depicted in the film don’t seem all that far-fetched, especially after the year we just had. In fact, some people probably fully support the idea of an annual 24-hour window where anything goes, given how close society appears to be veering towards the disorganized dystopian hellscape depicted in the franchise.
Blumhouse might be best known for their impressively consistent track record of success in the horror genre, but the four Purge movies so far have filled the action thriller gap in the production company’s repertoire, quickly abandoning the relatively self-contained story told in the first effort to gradually expand the scope and scale of the mythology with each subsequent sequel.
So far, the series has raked in over $450 million at the box office on combined production costs of $35 million, making it just one of many Blumhouse...

There’s a whole other layer beneath first-time director Tyler Taormina’s apparently realist coming-of-age drama
First-time feature director Tyler Taormina has dreamed his way into a very strange and intriguing film: a Gen-z reverie about life and fate, somewhere between The Prom and The Purge. The film never behaves as if it is anything other than a realist coming-of-age drama but there is something else going on.
Haley (Haley Bodell) is part of a clique of popular high-school kids in a bland suburban town who are preparing to take part in a local tradition. She and some other girls are wearing floaty dresses of sacrificial white and getting ready to go down to a local deli called Monty’s – along with a whole crowd of other kids – for what seems to be a pairing-off ritual, like a dance without music or dancing. But there is a lot riding on this,...

As the nightmare that is 2020 finally starts to wind down, it looks like lots of folks are spending their free time at home enjoying horror flicks to help take their minds off things. Indeed, as streaming services are busy putting together their brand new schedules for 2021, a somewhat overlooked movie from 2018 has managed to crack Netflix‘s Top 10 most-watched list today.
More specifically, the pic in question is The First Purge, and a little confusingly, this is in fact the fourth and latest film in the acclaimed dystopian thriller franchise. For those unaware, The Purge series focuses on an alternate reality near-future America that’s ravaged by record levels of crime and ongoing problems with overcrowded prisons. In a bid to control the rising criminal activity, the government gives the go-ahead to a dark and controversial annual national holiday that sees all crime – including murder – become legal for a 12-hour period.

A sequel to the classic 1973 horror film “The Exorcist” is in the works.
The Observer reported on Monday that David Gordon Green (2018’s “Halloween”) is in talks to direct the upcoming sequel, which will hail from Blumhouse Productions and Morgan Creek. Per the publication, Jason Blum, David Robinson and James Robinson will serve as executive producers on the film, which does not have a release date.
Additional details about the upcoming film, including casting, plot, and a prospective release date, were not provided.
Observer’s report came several days after William Friedkin, the director behind the original “The Exorcist,” stated that he would not be involved in any new versions of his horror film. The success of “The Exorcist” led to a variety of spinoffs, none of which Friedkin was involved with. Adam Mason’s “Songbird” is billed as the first Hollywood feature to be made during quarantine, and this impressively scaled pandemic-themed riff on “The Purge” couldn’t be prouder of itself for that accomplishment. The project announces its own topicality before the studio company logos have even played out during the opening credits, as snippets of news audio bark at us about the death toll of Covid-23 (a mutated coronavirus that’s evolved to attack brain tissue and kill people within 48 hours of infection), and not a single minute of the slapdash movie that follows allows you to forget that it was conceived, pitched, written, shot, edited, and released since lockdown started in March.

In just over a decade Blumhouse Productions has gone from a very smart agile indie to possibly the most significant horror production company out there. It’s slate is huge, it most quickly and cheaply, trusts in its creators and favours originality and genuine scares. Though the pandemic has meant certain release dates have had to move, or not as yet locked in, it’s clear the Blumhouse juggernaut is showing no signs of slowing. Hollywood horror kingpin Jason Blum’s Blumhouse has signed a three-picture deal with “Host” director Rob Savage and will finance and partner with Savage to produce the films.
Savage will be collaborating with the same team behind “Host,” including producer Douglas Cox; the writing team of Jed Shepherd & Gemma Hurley; and editor Breanna Rangott.
“We’ve been tracking Rob’s work for some time now, and when I got a look at ‘Host,’ I saw the inventiveness in his work that Ryan Turek on the Blumhouse team had been championing,” Blum said. “We are looking forward to getting this partnership underway immediately.”
“Host,” a found-footage horror movie, centers on a group of friends who hold weekly Zoom calls in order to stay in touch during the pandemic and begin to experience unexplained horrors. Savage had complete creative control on his film, which was entirely conceived, shot and distributed in 12 weeks during the pandemic lockdown.

Stuart Ford’s AGC International has picked up action thriller “The Father,” starring “Mulan” actor and martial artist Donnie Yen.
The sales and distribution arm of AGC Studios has swooped for international rights to the title, which will be launched to buyers at the Toronto International Film Festival, running in largely virtual form from Sept. 10-20. CAA Media Finance will handle U.S. distribution rights.
Set in South Boston, Yen — who is best known for the “Ip Man” franchise, “Star Wars: Rogue One” and, most recently, “Mulan” — stars as middle-class Hong Kong immigrant John Chung, who is making the best of his family’s new life in America while working as a modest fish broker in the city’s docklands. When his teenage sons stumble upon four kilos of heroin and are hunted down by a local crime ring and corrupt cops, Chung must stop at nothing to protect them.

If you’ve been paying attention to what’s happening these past four years, you’ve certainly seen your share of open racism spewed with an angry sense of entitlement only a white person believing themselves to be a descendant of God and inheritor of earth could possess. If you’ve been keeping tabs more recently on the subject of Kenosha, Wisconsin (or watch Last Week Tonight with John Oliver), you’ll know the county’s Sheriff is one such man. David Beth spoke back in 2018 without even the thinnest of veils about how we must “stop being politically correct” and finally “put these people away” so they stop procreating. He posited that Black concentration camps could even be reused once the imprisoned generations die off by selling the real estate to Amazon.

Full disclosure: I dislike The Purge film franchise intensely. In particular, the sequels have expanded on a potentially good genre idea and just become absolute dreck. So, a comedic satire of the whole thing contained strong possibilities for me. I’d 100% be on board with something of the sort. At the same time, to only partially tackle the concept would just lead to a mess, and that’s where we are with The Binge. At times, this is an amusing lowest common denominator comedy. At other times, however, cringingly unfunny, almost disregarding its own premise in the hope of capitalizing on a joke that’s never going to work. Dropping this weekend on Hulu, it’s far too hit or miss to recommend. The movie is a comedy that satirizes The Purge and its central conceit. Here, a time period in the near future has descended into such chaos that...

Exclusive: Genius: Aretha director-producer Anthony Hemingway is in talks to helm Train Man, a legal drama based on the true story of Darius McCollum, a man with Asperger syndrome whose fascination with subways and trains led to him posing as various New York City Metro officials in order to operate subway trains.

The Republican National Convention is underway, where the nation’s freakiest ghouls gather to make bizarre speeches and plot the future destruction of the planet. We’re halfway through and things have already gotten seriously odd, with the cherry on top being Kimberly Guilfoyle’s surreal screaming speech delivered to a largely empty room. It seems that this was too out-there even for Trump’s campaign, with his advisors describing it as “strange” and “weird.”
Further eyebrows were raised by an appearance by Mark and Patricia McCloskey, the gun-toting couple who made news as they threatened protesters walking past their home. They claimed that the Democrats want to “abolish the suburbs” and would bring “crime and lawlessness” to our streets. Strong words from a couple who are facing felony charges for unlawful use of a weapon.

A weirdly tame, let’s-all-get-wasted riff on “The Purge” from the team behind such solid youth-focused comedies as “Banana Split” and “Big Time Adolescence,” Hulu original “The Binge” imagines an alternate America where all drugs and alcohol are illegal, except during a 12-hour window each year, at which time anything goes. , treating intoxication as the punchline rather than the setup for what should have been a more subversive satire.
If only the country’s Puritan forefathers, or the teetotalers behind Prohibition, could see where their influence has steered us! Screenwriter Jordan VanDina (who’s also working on the “Animaniacs” reboot) has a few genuinely rowdy ideas up his sleeve — including an epic case of a driving under the influence and a shootout involving the world’s smallest crossbow — all of which is heightened by some reasonably inspired improvisation, especially from Mvp Vince Vaughn as a wildly inappropriate high school principal.

For the beginning of its history, Blumhouse made a name for itself by launching new film franchises in the horror genre, including “Paranormal Activity,” “The Purge,” and “Insidious.” However, recently, the film studio has taken a look at popular IP that is ripe for rebooting, including “Fantasy Island,” “The Invisible Man,” and “Halloween.” And apparently, the rebooting is going to continue at Blumhouse with John Carpenter’s “The Thing.”
Speaking at this year’s Fantasia Fest, John Carpenter was asked if he had talked to Jason Blum and Blumhouse about possibly directing any features.

Can you imagine a world where all drugs and alcohol are legal for one day only? Hulu’s new original film “The Binge” is taking on that possibility with a humorous twist. Instead of a ‘Purge‘-like society intent on fear and destruction, the project is proposing the fun aspects of changing the rules (for 24 hours at least).

On August 18, Ron Meyer was forced to resign his chairmanship at Universal Studios in the face of a sexual liaison come to light. As a longtime executive admitting that he paid off a mistress in order to prevent his company from facing embarrassment, it’s hard to imagine who would call him a victim of cancel culture. However unwittingly, he is part of a cultural revolution in Hollywood, one that is seeing the new Hollywood order push aside the old. Expect more veterans to be put out to pasture, victims of their fat paychecks, limited viability, or in the cases of Meyer and respected Warner Bros. studio head Kevin Tsujihara, the lure of the same femme fatale.

"To our first sip of alcohol." Hulu has released the first official trailer for a comedy called The Binge, from filmmaker Jeremy Garelick (The Wedding Ringer). The concept basically takes the premise of The Purge, but changes it into a comedy about alcohol. Set in a time where all drugs and alcohol are illegal, the only day anyone can participate in the "fun" is on The Binge day. Skyler Gisondo, Dexter Darden, and Eduardo Franco star as Griffin, Hags, and Andrew, three high school seniors who are trying to get to the best party in town where all their dreams will come true. Hopefully. As long as they can avoid their crazed principal, played by Vince Vaughn. This is one of those ridiculous-in-every-way party comedies that Hollywood still loves to make, but this one is going straight to Hulu. Probably best since it looks bad. A bit too wild & crazy.

When you think of modern horror, you can always guarantee that at least one of the movies that pops into your mind will have come from Blumhouse, who’ve cornered the market in recent years when it comes to crafting low-budget titles that reap huge rewards at the box office.
Not content with having the Halloween, Paranormal Activity, Insidious, The Purge and Happy Death Day franchises under their belt, super-producer Jason Blum has now seized control of the Universal Monsters as well. The Invisible Man got things off to a great start after receiving widespread critical acclaim and raking in over $130 million globally on a $7 million budget, and before we knew it, Dracula and The Wolfman were already in development.
Continuing their reputation as Hollywood’s premiere destination for horror, the company have now announced their eight-movie ‘Welcome to the Blumhouse’ initiative, that will give up-and-coming filmmakers a platform to...

Fresh off the horror hit “The Invisible Man,” Elisabeth Moss is re-teaming with Blumhouse. The Emmy-winning actress and her Love and Squalor Pictures production company are developing the still-unpublished book “Mrs. March” into a feature film, which Blumhouse will back.
Moss will also star in the film as the titular character, an Upper East Side housewife who starts to lose her grip on reality when she begins to suspect her novelist husband based the odious central character in his latest bestseller on her. Virginia Feito, the author of “Mrs. March,” will write the screenplay.
“I read Virginia’s novel in one sitting and was so captured by it I knew I had to make it and play Mrs. March,” said Moss. “As a character, she is fascinating, complex, and deeply human and I can’t wait to sink my teeth into her. Mrs. March is exactly the kind of engaging...
