The Reliant lacks faith ... in it's audience
vandeman-scott30 April 2020
THE RELIANT had one thing going for it right off the blocks. Adventure stories about the survivors of apocalypse and societal breakdown are still fashionable and always fun. Fans of this genre will even spot you a plot hole or two if you make it exciting enough for them. This movie, however, doesn't earn the benefit of the doubt.

Some will say this movie fails because it's a Christian film. That's not the reason. The faith element could have been both a central and interesting part of a cool movie night had things been done well, but they weren't. The filmmakers squander all the built-in good will that comes with a popular style in favor of bad writing and unsubtle sermonizing.

Like many here, I really wanted to like this movie ... but I can't. Having a positive faith message simply doesn't compensate for bad filmmaking. The irony is the message would have been more powerful and better received if the story had been allowed to do it's work without the moralizing, one-dimensional narrative dialog so plentiful in this movie. The ham-handed obviousness in THE RELIANT can be legitimately described as offputting and certainly illustrates a blank in comprehension among the filmmakers about how messages are conveyed more elegantly through action and suggestion than through simple recitation. Simply put, in this movie, there's too much telling and not enough showing and, while brimming with faith in God, it seems to have little faith in audience.

At the same time dialog is being weilded like a blunt instrument, the filmmakers target the LCD with an unforgivably hackneyed and most assuredly counterproductive pro-gun message guaranteed to trigger gun control proponents (and rightly so). It's nervy to break out the old "guns don't kill people, people kill people" and "If you criminalize guns, only criminals will have guns" bromides, then link them to Christianity as if somehow the two are monolithically related. Spoiler alert: They aren't. Pro Second Amendment (I am) or not, many people of faith might even find the suggestion to be an embarrassing misrepresentation, if not outright offensive.

Even setting aside the messaging misfires, not much is well in THE RELIANT. The acting performances are at worst eye rolling and at best workmanlike. The production values are nothing special. Some plot devices are simply too contrived to support any suspension of disbelief. Perhaps worst of all, the well meaning focus on faith suffocates because it endeavors to push us rather than to lead us.

This film gets three stars only because, sadly, there are plenty of films out there that are worse.

Really wanted to like this movie, but...
peterpelitera25 October 2019
We walked out after 35 minutes. Really wanted to like this movie, as the subject matter is relevant to me, but just thought it was really bad. Terrible acting, weak story line, dialog was silly and predictable and the starring actors were only in the first five minutes + may have been in later scenes but I just had to leave, it was just so lack luster). I support the message the film was trying to deliver, but it was just too much praise and no substance.. sorry, u really dislike this film...got a refund from theatre ..

Is if the NRA had directed and funded this movie
clarkmick3312 August 2020
Seriously how do movies like this get made in these days my only guess is that it was entirely funded by the NRA which then had a heavy hand in directing this movie. Basically this movie is about guns and God in other words its about the NRA. Whats worst is that it seems to be preaching to adolescents that you better get your guns because who knows when the world will end

Hilariously bad
jacobteasdale25 October 2019
Heavy handed evangelism, confusing leaps in the plot, inhuman characters, hilariously bad acting. Casual violence mixed with gun worship. Honestly no redeeming qualities.

This is a religious film
jasoncompton21 June 2020
This got several 1 stars so I almost didn't watch it. So I thought I would add another review. If you are offended by Christianity or a positive view point of guns you may not like this film, and I think would be the source of 1 star reviews. The writing and acting are not great, but that is true of many major films as well. I gave this a middle score, I watched the entire show and was entertained. So if you don't mind shows with a little less polish and recognize it is a film with a specific message you may enjoy it.

Ugh, it never ends...
Lost_cow24 October 2019
This movie is just plain boring. The plot makes no sense, the acting is wooden and it just never ends! To be fair, production value is decent. They did not cheap out.

Note, the person who wrote this movie has the top voted comment here... that should tell you something...

Who paid these people to rate this movie a 10* ???
Minnich7629 April 2020
Warning: Spoilers
The idea behind the film was decent. But sadly that's where the positive part of my review ends. The acting is atrocious, timeline is goofy, realism was laughable, and the handling of firearms was disgraceful. This movie could have been over at 34 minutes, but sadly it tortured me for another 80 minutes and I still can't believe that I allowed the film to play to the end. How did this train wreck win any sort of award? Is there an award for "Most ridiculous fight scene" because if so the one around 37 minutes where the guy slips while doing a roundhouse kick and lands head first on a broken bottle would definitely get my vote!! My advice is to get as far away from this movie as you possibly can! Ever since I watched this nonsense, I just can't help but think of these actors... and how they will have this on their resume for the rest of their short lived careers. But in all seriousness; There is No flipping way that someone could rate this a 10!! Anyone who has given this film a 4 or above is an absolute Liar! They must've been paid off.

Cringey and horrible direction. Garbage!
samzlind30 October 2019
I hated this movie so much. It doesn't even know what it's doing half the time. It's like they didn't care they just wanted a "Christian 'edgy'" movie that completely missed the point of what it was trying to say.

One of the worst films I have ever seen.
psxexperten3 December 2019
Absolutely silly rubbish. No amount of alcohol can make me re-watch that. A total waste of my time and money watching this farce of a movie. Words cannot express how horrible this movie is. Watching paint dry is quicker & more interesting. 7th grade school project? High ratings is from wanker friends of the cast and crew.

Oh lordy lord lord!
kurtcolbourne10 July 2020
Warning: Spoilers
Oy vey, where to begin?

So this movie sucks. It's not so much that it makes no sense....buy it doesn't make any sense. So, I read the reviews and thought it sounded too bad to be true. In some ways it isn't. The production is meh. There's scenes indoors where the audio sucks as you here an echo. The acting sucked at times. One guy straight up couldn't act to save his life. Another guy shot a rifle and the mimed recoil was so obvious that it physically hurt me to watch the scene.

The notion of gun porn mentioned in the user reviews is bunk. There's maybe 6 different guns shown. They don't worship the guns and they are so stupid as to have a safe that cannot be opened without a key AND a combination. Not one or the other, both. Might be secure, but we all know that when you need them over-complication spells your demise. They even based a large part of the story around this.

The real issue is the ending. The reliance, heh see what I did there, on faith isn't so out of the realm of what's believable under the given situation, but they overdo it. They push it way too far. Then at the end they slap you in the face with it. The use of Faith as a pun didn't make it any better either. Kevin Sorbo has been in a lot of faith based stuff as of late. I expected this since the first time I saw the trailer. That being said, holy lord that was stupid. The foundation of the story isn't terrible. It really just derails in the bad guy's epiphany and subsequent motivations. After that everyone and everything goes full r*****. People relying on their faith to get them through tough times is a tried and true concept. It is rooted in reality. They just lost their minds in the telling of it. People can forgive a lot in the way of acting issues, bad gun play, and bad tactics, but the motivations all have to make sense. A random baptism just doesn't. I mean, ffs that was the moment I just had to close the tab. I don't care how moronic it got after, that was bad enough.

There were other things too. The mom randomly shows up again after being captured and disappearing. No explanation as to how she was saved. The one guy shows up again just strolling around with one of the guys who attacked them in the first place. This one I can sort of excuse as old alliances and beefs may or may not disappear when the shtf. They kill a deer by jumping down onto it with a spear. I'm no expert but that can't be a common practice, to just stand on top of a downed tree that's maybe 6 feet off the ground, wait for a deer to walk below you while you are in full view, and then to successfully skewer it with your pointy stick. Then there's the band of friends. They've killed people. The fiance gets attacked in the master bedroom. They barely get him out of that fight alive. Then when the attacker is unconscious on the floor, they don't end the threat?

Like I said, makes no sense. They took something that could have been good and made it terrible. As an agnostic I can tolerate preaching, but I cannot tolerate bad writing.

Worth seeing

I love what the team has put together here. I've mostly given up on finding a movie worth the time, so it's a double pleasure seeing this. A superbly done movie... with a worthwhile msg!

Things go south really fast. Obviously a very right leaning propaganda piece that connects the Secind Amendment and the Bible. This will turn many off. As a straight up action film it's very uneven and just short of preachy. Definitely geared to a particular audience.

Heavy Handed
crevhrt29 April 2020
Well that's 90 minutes I'll never get back. The description of this movie is misleading... no where does it say this is a religious movie. It's heavy handed in its preaching. The acting is wooden, and the script is non dimensional. This movie is best shown at neo-con's churches, in my opinion.

Eric Roberts....
Bad-Good-Great3 December 2019
Like some of the other deadbeat actors, whenever this guy is among the main cast list, it's doomed to be a very bad, not just bad B-movie. Unlike Nicholas Cage, his movies in recent years are about 80% bad, but at least there's still 20% of them barely watchable; but not E. R.'s movies, 'cause he's already become one of the certified, patented trade marks of bad screenplay, bad cast, non-exist directing, going-nowhere, extremely torturing bad, worse and even worst B movies you'd encounter. Just run away or simply disregard, even it's just $1.00 or $1.50 for rental.

What an awful movie!
JBrown-3383625 October 2019
I really like Kevin Sorbo including "God's Not Dead" and "Let there be light." However this last movie was a big miss. The writing was lazy and bad, the acting was bad and the plot included an unbelievable twist of unrelated events -coupled with cliche bible versus. This work did not live up to the Kevin Sorbo "standard" that I know. I like that Kevin takes on difficult issues -stands strong for our savior and against evil. More importantly I typically look forward to his movies. This last one, I am sad to say was just horrible. He is better than this. Something went terribly wrong with "The Reliant."

So bad. Don't waste your time.
julieekish6 May 2020
The lesson we are suppose to learn from this movie is...Trust in God but always carry a gun because God wants you to defend yourself against all the evil in the world. The acting isn't good and the story jumps around so much I wasn't sure who was who. It's heavy on the religious preaching and could well be a propaganda film produced by the NRA. It was so cringe-worthy I couldn't finish it.

The old "bait and switch"
Whatajoke12325 October 2019
Warning: Spoilers
Kevin Sorbo in movie for about 10 minutes... Eric Robert's for 30 seconds... and regretfully Brian Bosworth for the entire movie. Plot ridiculous and still trying to understand how an accidental shooting with kids helps promote our 2nd ammendment rights? Just gives liberals more ammunition against it (pun intended). I want my $11.50 back. Went to movie in Zanesville, Ohio. Only good thing was God's message of salvation.

10 seems too generous, 1 seems too harsh... Come now, Goldilocks, 6 seems fair!
AustinZiprick25 October 2019
This movie is a lot better than I had expected from seeing the trailers.

However, that does not make it a masterpiece.

Pros:

. Solid cinematography

. Quality production design (for the most part)

. Kevin Sorbo

. Nice score/sound editing

. Some decent action scenes

. Other compelling moments of writing/direction supported by the actors

All that said, good or even great scenes here and there don't make for a truly transformative viewing experience- there has to be more, and unfortunately, that's where I think this film stumbles to deliver.

Cons:

. This is a 2 hour and 20 minute long film (from what I can find online). To me, it dragged hard in places, and should have been chopped down to an hour and a half.

. Characters: Some motivations feel unclear/contradictory. A number of arcs seem rushed/incomplete/written from the end forward. Possibly too many superfluous roles as well.

. Show me, don't tell me: a good chunk of the storytelling gets imparted though talking expositional dumps- visually uncreative.

. The movie's tone shifts quite sharply on occasion. Not always a bad thing, but it's a little abrupt at times when swinging from solemn to sweetness.

Now, for everything else, I have this last list of mixed bag items...

"Pons":

. The acting visible here is on a moving spectrum- most times just fine, sometimes even pretty good, and other times kind of cringe inducing

. Dialog is ok, a little campy in a lot of places for my taste though

. Editing is decent, though I noticed several hard fades to black- it maybe could be said to lack a little creativity in spots

. Direction is alright, but I just feel like this whole concept had way more potential than what was ultimately realized on screen.

In summary, I'd say it's nothing too awesome, but nothing too bad either.

As someone who also works in this business and holds many Judeo-Christian beliefs, I'm excited to see new filmmakers come out of this community, but I'm also disappointed that we have yet to see consistent high caliber (and that does NOT mean high-budget) productions being produced.

Maybe one day one day there will be a Christian Tarantino-type who comes onto the scene, but I haven't found them yet.

We'll either just have to keep waiting...

or embody the change we want to see...

See ya 'round, fellas!

17 minutes of my life gone!
I knew it was doomed when I saw Eric Roberts was in it, terrible acting and It looks like they only got one take (I doubt they even got paid, just tea and cheap biscwits)... Turned it off at 17 minutes, I'll probably have nightmares now.

I wanted to like it
aharon-1930025 October 2019
I really did want to like it. I support the messages of belief in a higher power, and active self protection. But the delivery was awkward and ham-handed and had all the goofiness of the After School Specials that made religion uncool in my youth.

This movie was a blatant product placement scam. It attempts to appeal to our visceral beliefs by bypassing our intellect. The message was "Buy guns, and concealed carry insurance, because.... G-d."

In case the fear of roving bands of armed looters wasn't enough to send you running to your local (or online) sporting goods store, they also threw in a line about fighting tyranny. OMG. That just makes no sense. If there had been a tyrannical government, it would have squashed the uprising. That's what tyrannies specialize in. But the director couldn't resist throwing in one more dog whistle catch phrase.

But don't worry. We will remain G-d fearing gun owners in spite of this movie.
