The Community is Falling Apart... or Not?
panagiotis199319 December 2022
Warning: Spoilers
With the injuries they have, the group that came back with Madison, I don't know how they will be able to fight in case the Indian tribe attacks. So Luciana just left, and she left Nick behind? Wow. Otto is right, like there is trouble so you get ready to leave immediately? All they have built, they should defend it. Troy might be crazy but he is right. They are cowards for leaving the community. Things got pretty heated. For those who leave, good luck out there, being against people... and zombies. Jeremiah is in pain, getting drunk all the time to feel numb, kinda feel bad about him. Why would the enemy kill the family who was trying to leave, I thought that was what they wanted for people to leave their land. Maybe it's not them. Jeremiah thinks Troy is responsible, that would be extreme. I don't understand why Madison trusts Troy, the dude is out of control.

Ok this was a decent episode but I wish Victor and Daniel were included, my rating is 7.2/10.

Storyline: At Broke Jaw Ranch, Nick and Jeremiah Otto are shooting pistols for target practice. Nick worries about Madison's long absence.

Alicia and Jake awaken in bed. Alicia also worries about Madison and the people who shot down the helicopter.

Nick spots Troy's team hobbling toward the ranch on the road to the gate.

Nick, Alicia and other ranchers rush out as Madison and Troy's team arrive, who all have bloody feet from walking without shoes. Jeremiah requests a private debriefing, but one of the ranchers, Vernon Trimbol, insists Troy's team share their findings with everyone.

Against Troy's wishes, Mike Trimbol announces that a group of Native Americans slaughtered Phil McCarthy and the others from the outpost. Troy tries to keep everyone calm saying they can handle the situation, but Mike cracks and blurts out that they're all going to die if they don't leave.

Jeremiah, Troy, Jake and Madison discuss a course of action. Troy insists they fight Walker, but Jeremiah believes Walker is bluffing. Jake suggests they negotiate with Walker, pointing out that he beat Walker in court over past lawsuits. Madison asks if they stole Walker's land. Jeremiah maintains that the ranch was sold to his forebears. He goes on to state that any given plot of land was stolen from someone, and the ranch is no different.

Madison rests in the bunkhouse. Nick tells her that Luciana went back south.

Alicia finds Jake using his gun for target practice. She asks Jake for pointers on shooting. Alicia asks who will take over the ranch if something happens to Jeremiah. Jake explains that the ranch will pass to him and Troy when Jeremiah dies, but that residents will ultimately look up to whomever they deem worthy. Alicia tells Jake the ranchers would look up to him as a leader, if he stepped up.

Back at the Clark's bunkhouse, Gretchen Trimbol tells Madison that her father (Vernon) is worried about Walker, and wants to take the family to a colony in the Rockies. She says he's telling other ranchers about his plans.

Jeremiah pulls a bottle of liquor from his desk drawer. He walks outside and sees a row of fires surrounding the ranch. Ranch residents come out of their homes to watch them blaze.

The next day, Jeremiah maintains that Walker would have burned down the entire ranch if he was serious about attacking them.

The Trimbol family load supplies onto the back of a truck. Troy guards the pantry and forbids residents from leaving the ranch with supplies. The Trimbols tell him that Jeremiah gave them permission to take a few items before they leave.

Vernon tells Jeremiah that he's leaving the ranch with his family to keep them safe. Madison warns Jeremiah that the ranch will be weaker if anyone leaves.

Troy runs after the Trimbol family's RV, and yells at Mike for leaving. Jake stops Troy, and they fight. Vernon drives off with his family and his horses.

Troy explains to Madison that Mike was his loyal childhood friend. Madison offers to help him ensure that no one else leaves.

Madison looks on, as Troy gathers a small militia in the pantry. He charges them with defending the ranch.

Nick returns to his newly rebuilt home to find Jeremiah drunk. Jeremiah shoots bullets into the floorboards as he alludes to a past sin, saying that there is "blood in the earth".

Alicia returns to her bunkhouse after spending the night with Jake. Madison questions Alicia about her relationship with him, but Alicia assures her that it's nothing serious. She further mentions that they are using contraception.

Jeremiah and Nick spot one of Vernon Trimbol's horses in the pasture.

Madison, Nick and Jeremiah leave the ranch on a pickup to search for Vernon's family on the road. Madison reasons that the horse may have escaped on its own, but Jeremiah predicts that the Trimbol family is dead.

Jake packs a bag and tells Alicia that he's going to the Black Hat Reservation to negotiate with Walker. Alicia begs him not to go, but he is determined.

Madison, Nick and Jeremiah find the Trimbols' RV in the road, riddled with bullets. They find that each member of the family is either dead or infected. They kill the infected and euthanize a partially eaten horse. As they pile bodies into their truck. Jeremiah tells Madison that he suspects Troy killed the Trimbols.

Madison, Nick and Jeremiah return to the ranch with the bodies. Madison speaks to a gathered crowd, and covers for Troy. She declares that the people who killed Travis and Phil are the same ones who killed the Trimbols. She warns that anyone who leaves the ranch will die, and urges them to stay together. The crowd murmurs in support.

Alicia packs a bag to follow Jake.

Ranchers return supplies to the pantry. Nick confronts Madison about lying to the ranch. Madison points out that even if Troy killed the Trimbols, no one would believe them. Nick agrees to keep Madison's secret, so long as she includes him in her plans.

Madison confronts Troy about killing the Trimbols. Troy admits that he pursued them to confront Mike over abandoning him, but claims that things got out of hand. Madison tells Troy he can be the heir to the ranch, but only if he learns to control himself. She hopes Troy is up to the task of protecting the Ranch from Walker. Troy says he is.

What you have to sacrifice to survive
pwetterstrand3 July 2017
This episode depend some of the main characters. I do not miss Travis, but his absence do impact on the lives of those surviving.

This episode made Jeremiah Otto more real. Kim Dickens as Madison Clark was brilliant as usual.

Troy. He want to do the best he can. For his family. Whatever its cost.

One of the key themes of this episode is the loss of innocence and the harsh realities of the new world
fernandoschiavi15 April 2024
Troy's patrol return with news of Walker's ultimatum; that night bonfires ring Broke Jaw, unnerving the sheltered people. Gretchen's family leaves despite Troy's threatening efforts to keep them for security measures. Jeremiah unmoved by these events but feels they need to be prepared for a fight. Madison, Nick and Jeremiah later find Gretchen and her family murdered and turned. They realize Troy was responsible, but Madison informs the community that Walker did it to prepare them for the upcoming conflict. Jake journeys to Black Hat to negotiate peace terms with Walker. Alicia follows him.

The episode focuses on the aftermath of a devastating attack on the ranch, leading to a power struggle and further fractures within the community.

One of the key themes of this episode is the loss of innocence and the harsh realities of the new world. Characters are forced to make difficult decisions and confront the darker aspects of human nature as they fight for their survival. The episode also delves into the concept of home and belonging, as the characters struggle to find a sense of security in a world that is constantly changing.

One of the most striking scenes in "Red Dirt" is the funeral sequence, which is beautifully shot and emotionally resonant. This scene serves as a powerful reminder of the human cost of the apocalypse and the importance of community in times of crisis.

Overall, "Red Dirt" is a compelling episode that further develops the characters and themes of "Fear the Walking Dead." It is a stark reminder of the harsh realities of the apocalypse and the lengths that people will go to in order to protect themselves and their loved ones.

Madison became more interesting and troy more psychopath
MomentIMDB23 September 2019
Warning: Spoilers
On the ranch, great tension is created before walker and its possible threat. something that I loved, was the great handling of the problem and the reaction of the people, they made it very realistic. in the previous chapter one of the founding fathers died, one had already died before. One of the four decided to leave for the sake of his family. Then Madison, Nick and Otto decide to go for them, since some of their horses returned. One of the most shocking moments of the season was the revelation of the fate of the Gretchen. I can't stop saying it, Troy is one of the best characters in the whole series and his madness grew in this episode, since after an interesting talk with Madison, we are told that Troy killed them. I love the fight between troy and jack. One of the best parts of the episode its when madison say that walker killed the gretchen

This is a character driven episode that moves the story and characters forward, it's drama at its best
Holt3441 October 2020
Courtney Hunt directed this episode, it begins where we left off in the previous episode with Madison, Troy and his men getting back to the Ranch. We got to meet the antagonist and a war is brewing between the two groups, the villain wants their land back and the Otto family wants to defend the land they bought all those years ago. It's a plot I find super interesting, reminding me of the western-drama Yellowstone that has a similar plot. With a bunch of well written characters these kind of plots works perfectly as both see themselves as good so it's up to us viewers to come up with our own opinion of them.

The episode isn't one of the season's best but it moves the plot with a good speed with lots of character development and great performances. The Otto family is getting more interesting after each episode and so is the Ranch. Something have been building in these couple of episodes and we know Troy could go off any minute like a grenade, Jake is more calm and more empathic but there's some history between the two. The whole family is in a way broken and Jeremiah Otto sees that but the two brothers have different plans in how to run the community.

The episode has some great camera work and I really liked the use of reflection in some shots, cinematography was again amazing and so was the musical score and sound editing. The makeup and special effects department continue to do some amazing work.

The title of the episode "Red Dirt" refers to a quote that Jeremiah Sr says about the Earth under the ranch being filled with blood, that isn't a spoiler but could mean a lot regarding the backstory of the Ranch and past feuds with the native americans. The plot is moving forward to a conclusion of the first half of Fear's third season.

"Red Dirt" Is Phenomenal.
lunasnowhehe10 June 2021
Our characters' skills are put to the test during this episode when they are tasked with keeping the peace, especially after the events of the episode prior. We see them slowly climb up the ranks at the Ranch and it's honestly so damn well written. It's crazy how much development they are undergoing only 6 episodes into the season.

More stupidity....

Warning: Spoilers
Sending that young blood thirsty git to perform a controlled reconnaissance of a missing outpost?! Genius

Walking for miles back to camp without boots, sure....why would you walk on the soft grass when you could walk on the stones and concrete?! Come on The Dead, stop disappointing me and end these sorry idiots. Feast my friends..FEAST!!

Oh...and for the record. Madison has never been a good character, she's an idiot who should have been killed in the first few episodes. Then there'd be a lot less better folk dead. Peace out.

Libertarians will inherent the earth
namob-4367330 November 2023
In this episode we finally got the feared "L" word mentioned. Those people who are diligently plotting to take over the world and leave you alone. Those people who wants to live alone and make their own decisions over their own lives. Yea, those. The Libertarians.

The most hated political group of all time, hated by everyone else, from the right to the left and everyone in-between. Libertarians are hated by the establishment, all governments, and all shadowy figures. Why? Because they want to allow you to be your own master. You are your own sovereign, your body, your money, your choices. Those in power can never allow that to happen, that is why libertarians are always hated and prosecuted.

The episode itself was a meh, although the acting is still pretty decent compared to the first two seasons. It was great to get rid of the husband and his son, big improvement since.
